Week12
Tyler is doing so well, that his handler thinks that he's ready to leave his
gentle care for the gentle care of a forever family! "Tyler has great
focus...he aims to please." He has great recall, knows all of his tricks,
and loves being a member of the pack! Tyler can still "go into his shell"
when his handler isn't around, but once Tyler sees his pal, his loving
personality shines, and it's back to interacting with his tier-mates.
Tyler's handler knows that once he bonds with his forever family, he'll be a
wonderful addition to their clan. With all that he's been through, trust is
a big factor in Tyler's world. "Once [he] started trusting me, he started to
open up." Tyler has such a loving soul. Will Tyler be leaving his handler's
gentle care soon? Stay tuned!
Week 11
Tyler made such great progress over the last few weeks that he's testing the
community waters this weekend. He'll be heading out for his first ever
meet & greet. We know this will be a little tough on our shy boy, but
we're hoping that it will also be a good confidence building exercise for
him.
Everyone, staff and inmates alike, have fallen head over heels for sweet
Tyler. They love to watch him run with his ears flapping in the yard
and play with his squeaky toys in the comfort of his cell. Tyler has
such a sweetness to him that it's hard not to fall in love with him from the
moment you meet him. He is loved by the other dogs and he wins over
everyone he meets. Now, all that's left is a home of his very own.
Fingers crossed...
Week 10
Tyler continues to work on his commands. He did really well with his “sit
and down” this week! His “leg weave” is still a work in progress, as is his
“with me on leash,” but Tyler LOVES the “shell game!” Tyler still has his
moments when he hears loud noises, but his “recovery” period is becoming
shorter and shorter. He's even beginning to warm up to strangers with more
ease and confidence. Overall, his handler sees “no issues” with Tyler, and
hopes that someone will accept his shyness for what it is, and love him as
much as he does!
Week 9
Tyler is making great strides and his list of tricks and commands is growing
longer each week. He has learned lots of tricks including bowing and
giving his paw for a shake. Plus, his recall is nothing short of
superb. His handler reports that no matter what Tyler is busy with, he
will always come when called. Tyler's handler is amazed by Tyler's
manners and the fact that he is always so well behaved. Tyler likes
the quiet and the comfort of a routine. He would be a great match for
anyone who enjoys the same things as he does. Does that sound like you?
Week 8
Tyler has been working on some brand new tricks this week including learning
how to stay, wait and bow. He's also learning to take treats from some
new friends. Tyler will probably always be on the shy side because of
what he endured early on. But, for those of you willing to be a little
patient and let him get comfortable with you...Tyler will reward you with
kisses and snuggles that will make any heart melt! As he gets braver
and more confident, Tyler will be heading out on some field trips to
increase his circle of security. Stay tuned...
Week 7
Tyler worked on his “stays” and “waits” this week. This pup has very good
focus, learns quickly, and is doing “great” with his commands and recalls as
a result! This shy pup continues to become more comfortable around strangers
and continues to make new friends on the block. Tyler “does fine” with the
handlers and staff members that he knows. Tyler doesn’t like to be picked
up, so that will be one of his homework assignments next week!
Tyler is very well-behaved! His handler hasn’t had to correct him once since
he entered the program! Tyler is also a cuddler. He loves to be right next
to his person for some love and pets. When Tyler is in his crate, and his
handler turns off the television, Tyler’s head will “pop up.” He will go to
the end of the bed and wait for his “come on up” command. Tyler doesn’t have
to be told twice to join his handler and hunkers down under the covers with
him! You’ve come such a long way, Tyler! Keep up the good work!
Week 6
Tyler continues to make progress in the program. His handler continued to
work on his "stays" this week and he is excelling with this command. Tyler
is a laid-back kind of pup, but he loves to play in the yard! He gets along
well with the other dogs, but still would prefer to play one-on-one with his
pack-mates. His handler is continuing to increase Tyler's comfort zone, but
who knows what this little pup faced during Hurricane Katrina and his life
afterwards? Tyler's handler is very patient and knows that this fur-baby can
learn to trust again and find his forever home. Tyler really focuses on his
handler while he works with him. "He has great recall. No matter what he is
doing, I can call him and he comes to me." Tyler's' handler thinks that
"he'll do great" when he finds his forever home.
Week 5
Tyler is doing great! Although he is hesitant to do his "stand-stay"
command when there is a lot of commotion around him, he just shines when
he's in his comfort zones (the doggie yard, kennel runs, or his and his
handler's space). Tyler's handler understands that things can still be scary
for this pup and adjusts his training accordingly. As a result, Tyler has
great focus and recall! Tyler is always aware of his surroundings, and
sometimes will get "spooked" at certain noises. His handler is re-creating
some noises that Tyler isn't used to so that this shy boy can learn that new
noises are just that....new noises, and that he is safe. Tyler loves playing
with his canine buddies, especially on a one-to-one basis. Overall, our
sweet-smiling Katrina rescue continues to make progress and we're proud of
him!
Week
4
Tyler really turned a corner in his training this week. He "fits right into
this program, and is making positive progress!" Tyler knows his "sit,"
"down," "shake," and "crate" commands, has great recall [he'll come to his
handler no matter where he is in the yard], and has proven that he can bond
with other people. His handler proudly told us that after just three
weeks, "he is probably a month ahead of the game!"
Tyler loves to have his belly rubbed, and will sometimes paw his handler's
arm when he wants some attention. He started to play a lot with the other
dogs this week, and also learned the joys of a rawhide bone. Tyler has
great focus when he trusts the people he's with. We have no doubt he will
make a great pet once he bonds with his people. You get a gold star on
your paper this week, Tyler. Keep up the good work!
Week 3
Tyler continued to make progress this week His
handler worked on his basic commands, but added "crate" into the mixture
with success! Tyler's next homework assignment will be "shake!" Because
Tyler is still on a learning curve as far as
having a lot of people around him, his handler has decided to work with
him mostly in the doggie runs
until he's more comfortable on the tier. Once he has found his comfort zone
there, Tyler will graduate to showing off his newfound skills in the doggie
yard! Tyler's handler recruited some of the other handlers to help this shy
boy trust others to tend to his needs. Tyler visited another cell during "count", and went out
to the yard with a couple of his HOPE tier-mates. Tyler will be
spending some time with Brandee during "counts" next
week. Tyler and Brandee have really become friends, and his "big sister"
continues to teach Tyler confidence, how to play, and just how be a dog
again.
The bond between them is just precious!
Tyler loves cuddling with his handler for a good snooze, or just spending
some
quiet TV time with him! Tyler's handler thinks that he'd do best having
another dog in his
forever home. He gets along well with all of his pack-mates, and
having a doggie friend to keep him
company would be very good for this Katrina rescue. Do you know
anyone who would want to take this cutie on? We HOPE so!
Tyler's handler reports that he continues to adjust well in his new
environment. His handler started teaching Tyler some commands this week, and
Tyler all but mastered "go down!" Our shy boy still isn't quite sure about
all of the activity in his world, so his handler is working with Tyler a lot
on the block to help boost his concentration while learning new things, and
his trust in human beings. Of course, Tyler's handler is giving him a lot of
pets to let him get used to a person's touch! Tyler has broadened his
horizons as a result by going up to people that he's curious about, and
giving them a sniff! His handler says that Tyler showed again that he's most
relaxed in the yard. "He plays well when he's out there!" Tyler is off to a
fantastic start and we're all so pleased with how far he's come in just two
weeks in the program!
Tyler's new handler's face lit up when he first saw him! They spent the week
getting to know one another and Tyler's handler says that our shy Katrina
rescue is "adjusting well." Tyler is still getting used to life in the
prison and is understandably nervous sometimes with all of the new noises
and people that he's encountering. That being said, Tyler absolutely LOVES
the doggie yard! His handler says he seems most relaxed when he's there.
Miss Brandee has designated herself to be Tyler's dog mentor in the program!
The two of them really enjoy one another's company. Brandee does her best to
engage Tyler in play and Tyler's handler thinks that our new fur-baby is
starting to build some confidence because of Brandee's efforts. Although his
handler has only known Tyler for a short time, he feels that Tyler is going
to do very well in the program. This sweet boy is going to be a
charmer and perhaps he'll pave the way for his other two friends from
Katrina who are still waiting at the rescue.
UPDATE - 8/28/09
Tyler is a sweet, five year old chow mix who is a bit on the shy side.
He is heading into the big house today to start a brand new adventure.
He was rescued four years ago from the ravages of Hurricane Katrina and he
has been waiting for someone to love ever since.
We're hoping that the HOPE Program will give him the confidence he needs to
step into a new life with a family of his own. Tyler is available for
adoption through Animal Rescue
Incorporated.
