Week 11
Tucker had another great week.  He's heading home at the end of this coming week so his handlers are polishing up all of his skills so that he'll be able to put his best paw forward in his new home.  Tucker helped to welcome the new kid, Kobe/Taz, this week.  Tucker is a great pal and loves other dogs so he's a good choice to help out the new kids at ease as they find their footing in the program.  Way to go, Tucker!

Week 10
Tucker had a very good week! He continued to work on his meeting and greeting skills, and he is “doing a lot better with people walking away from him and others walking up to him.” Good boy, Tucker! This pup also loves to play with the other dogs in the program. “They have a lot of fun together.” His handlers were pleased with the reports they received about the field trips he took with the HOPE volunteers. “He went out two times this past weekend, and did very well both times. We really hope that he goes to a good home and that they give him a lot of time to run and play. He’s going to make a good pet to someone because he’s a very good dog. We will miss him when he leaves, but we will keep doing our help to the program.”

Week 9
“Tucker is doing so great, and we can see such an improvement in his behavior when greeting new people.” In fact, Tucker is doing so well with this task, that “sometimes when people walk by him, he just sits on his own because he knows that it is what he has to do before people pet him or treat him. We are very proud of Tucker.” His handlers also report that “new commands for Tucker are also getting so good, that he can do them with or without treats. This boy is smart!” Tucker got some time in the big yard this week, and had a great time playing football with his handlers. “He is just so much fun!” One of Tucker’s handlers wrote this week about just how much he loves the program. He’s been with us longer than his cell mate, but he says that “having a cellie that loves to train and to work with Tucker is so good for [their pup] because we work together and are on the same page. The more of us who learn means the more of us who can teach and help these dogs. The dogs have taught me so much and all they want to do is please and be loved. If only people were so simple. Thanks, HOPE!” We can only thank our handlers for the love and dedication they give to guide dogs, like Tucker, to their forever homes.

Field Trip Alert (as told by his HOPE friend Margie) - Tucker and I went out again today and I have a hard time believing this is the same dog I took out a few weeks ago.  His handlers are doing a really awesome job with him and I understand even some of the CO's are helping out by being the friendly strangers who approach him.  We did the same thing as last week - started off with the long lead and let him do his thing.  He runs off and sniffs, but always circles back and seems pretty content to spend most of the time walking beside me.  In fact as we were crossing the field on the way back to the car, I dropped the leash and he stayed with me all the way back.  We went back to the flea market and I think it was even more crowded today.  The only barking was when we first got there and Tucker was getting out of the car - he let out several "woofs" and it was almost as if he was announcing his arrival!  This week I gave him more of the leash as we walked up and down the aisles and stopped at several  vendor tables.  Tucker did a great job and I was really proud of him. He's come so far in just a few short weeks.  He's going to be a great companion for some lucky person.

Week 8
Tucker’s handlers gave him rave reviews for his sit, stay down and give paw commands this week! His tendency to jump on people is still a work in progress, so Tucker’s handlers have other people on the block treat him when he greets them without jumping on them. Here’s to more treats, little boy! “We took Tucker outside, and he loves when you throw his toy. He runs to get it for you. He will also sit and stay while you walk across the big dog yard. When you tell him down, he will. Tucker’s recalls are really good as well.” We hope that you find someone to enjoy your exuberance for life, and a forever home soon, Tucker!

Field Trip Alert (as told by his HOPE friend Margie) - Everyone would have been so proud of Tucker today.  I started off again with a 50 ft lead.  We walked thru a field and I let him run as much as he wanted.  Again he never really went to the end of the lead.  We practiced recalls, and when he'd come running back I'd have him sit in front of me or beside me.  At first it was really hard to get his attention (he was way too busy) but after a while he got the idea. We also practiced "stay"s.  At first he was losing his focus and breaking the stay at about 20 feet, but after a few times of having to go back to the starting point, he got the idea and I was able to go out to the end of the lead.   After a while, we headed over to the flea market at Williams Grove.  It was really crowded - lots of people and vendors. Wasn't sure how this was going to go.  We started by walking on the outside aisles, but then worked our way in - vendors on both sides, people everywhere carrying bags, pushing carts, kids running, etc.  I kept Tucker close and he didn't bark or lunge even one time. I was amazed and so proud of him.We walked up and down the aisles a couple of times and then headed back to the prison. At the front gate, he was fine with one of the CO's, but he did bark at another one (the only bark all day).  As we  walked back thru the yard, a line of inmates was walking by us and I didn't want to push our luck so I played it safe and had Tucker sit and we played "watch".  Again, he did fine.  His handlers have really done a great job.  What a difference from the first time I took him out and he was barking at everything that came along!

Week 7
This week, Tucker had a ball playing with Nemo and Grant! At first Tucker’s and Nemo’s handlers weren’t too sure about letting them play together because they would bark at each other. “As it turns out, they just wanted to play with each other, and are now best buddies.” Tucker knows his sit, stay, down, leave it, shake, roll, and come commands. Because he’s such a good boy, his handlers still have some tricks up their sleeves to teach him! “Tucker is full of energy and loves to spend a lot of time outside with his toys. He also loves to swim. When he’s in his crate, he is calm and relaxed.” You’re doing great, Tucker!

**Training Note**  Tucker is incredibly intelligent and would do well with advanced training in agility, search & rescue or another working sport.  He loves to learn and is very bright.  It's difficult to show this in the video, but a great deal of his skills are being performed while his handler is standing upward of 20 feet away.  What a boy!

Field Trip Alert (as told by his HOPE friend Margie) - I'm happy to report that Tucker and I did a lot better today. This past week his handler worked on having new people approach him and it showed. There wasn't nearly the amount of barking at people as we walked thru the prison. I also changed my demeanor this week - I tried to be as low-key as I could be and I think that may have helped some. We started off with the 50 ft lead and just walked thru a field for about 40 minutes. Tucker got to run to his heart's content, but he'd never really go to the end of the leash. He'd run some and then look back and check in. Periodically I'd tell him to "come" and he'd come running back. I gave him no chance today to go after my pant legs - when he came running back, I made him sit immediately and "watch" for a few seconds before releasing him. After the field, I put his regular leash on him and we hit the trail. He did really well with his loose leash walking. We ran in to some people on the trail with 3 large dogs - all off leash. They all ran up to Tucker and at first Tucker barked, but then they all met politely. Some joggers passed by and again Tucker barked and lunged, but not nearly like last week. In fact, as we were going back to the car, I saw a jogger coming and I had Tucker sit and I squatted down and rubbed his chest as the jogger went by without any reaction. His handler said he will have people run by him this week and work on that. Driving back to the prison, there wasn't a peep from the boy - I think he was actually tired! As we were walking thru the parking lot to the front gate, someone was coming toward us - I watched Tucker and thought we were going to get by the guy without a bark when at the last second, Tucker gave one "woof" - he just had to get his 2 cents in. I just told him to knock it off. As we were walking thru the yard, a couple of inmates were going by and I could tell Tucker was getting ready to bark - before he could do anything I told him to sit, stay - it worked. Tucker's really a bright boy. Hopefully someone will come along who will continue with his training, provide him with plenty of exercise and remind him to mind his manners.

Week 6
This pup had a good week! “Tucker has been doing good and is listening a little better. We let him run outside for a while and then do training with him.” Tucker’s handlers are big fans of his, and hope that someone would like to adopt him soon. “He is a smart dog, and people here really like him a lot. Tucker is a very happy dog all of the time. He loves to play with his toys a lot, and also loves to play with the other dogs. We are working with Tucker every day, and he seems to like that as well.” Here’s to finding a family who will appreciate the fact that you like to play AND work, Tucker!

Week 5
Tucker was treated to as much play time as his handlers could give him this week “because he likes to play a lot.” Of course, Tucker also had to learn his homework. His handlers used the play time as work time by combining the two and working on Tucker’s sit, down, stay and give paw commands. Since it was so rainy this week, this pup worked indoors with a lot of people walking around, and he did well! Tucker and Grant also did some training together, and “they seem to like each other a lot. We know they will play well together when we take them to the big dog yard. Tucker is a very smart dog.”  Tucker is not only excelling at his commands in the traditional way, he can also do most of his commands with just hand signals from his handlers.  He can also respond to most of his commands from several feet away.  Tucker is absolutely brilliant and will make a fine companion!!

Week 4
Tucker’s handlers report that he did well with his training this week, but he tends to like his play time more. So, Tucker will be doing more training during his day, then he will be rewarded with his play time. His handlers know that this pup still needs to focus and listen sometimes, but they know that he’ll be up to the task. One thing this pup doesn’t lack, is love on the block. “He is very good around people, and a lot of people like Tucker, so they always show him love.” Here’s to finding your forever family to love you, Tucker!

Week 3
Tucker absolutely loved the warm weather last week.  He got to have a lot of extra outside time to practice his training and also his football skills.  Tucker loves to play so his handlers intertwine rounds of playing catch with his favorite toy, a half inflated football, with time practicing his homework.   His handlers use Tucker's love of fetch to help him practice his skills while still having fun and enjoying himself.  As a result, Tucker is already making great strides with his training.  He has learned most of his basic commands, is improving every day with meeting strangers and is already learning several of the more difficult skills that usually take a good while longer.  If Tucker keeps up this pace, he'll be more than ready for "parole" before too long.  Tucker is a total goofball, but he's smart and always eager to please.  He will make a great pet for anyone with a love of the outdoors, plenty of energy and a half-inflated football to share.

Week 2
Tucker continued to work on his sit, down and stay commands, but he also tried some new tricks. He gets along so well with the other dogs, his handlers can’t wait to get him out in the big doggie yard so that he can play with them. For now, Tucker is content to go out back of the block and play with his favorite football. This pup is doing better around the other people in his world, and likes to play a lot around them. Keep up the good work, sweet pup!

Week 1
Tucker did well during his first week of training. His handlers took things slow to see how he would do around all of the new things he was experiencing. They learned that Tucker doesn’t mind being around people when things are calm. They also learned that this pup is a good student! Tucker has already worked on his sit, down and stay commands, and “he listens very well.” This newbie was also already introduced to the doggie yard, and showed his handlers just how good his recall skills are! “Tucker is a happy dog and loves to play a lot! He also loves to run outside and be with the other dogs. He is good around them. We think he is going to make a good adoption dog and make a family very happy.” You’re off to a great start, Tucker!

UPDATE - 2/1/11
