Week 10 & 11
Todd's handler continued to work on his homework assignments...especially
his stays. This pup also continued to improve with not getting distracted
when things were busy on the block. You go, boy! Todd had his last furlough
from the prison to attend the Harrisburg Senators and CPAA Community Night
recently. He thought that Rascal, the Senators' mascot, was a pretty neat
friend, and the feeling was mutual! The best news is that Todd went to his
forever home over the weekend to be with his doxie sister Maggie! Maggie
can't wait to teach him a bunch of new things, including getting his water
legs while his new Mom goes fishing! Although your handler and all of us at
the HOPE program will miss you, we know that you'll find a lot of love in
your new home! Enjoy your journey, "Big Todd!"

Week 9
Todd is back to being his cute (and sometimes a little stubborn) self this
week, so it was back to the homework assignments for this sweet boy. He's
mastered his sit, down, watch, and walk on a loose leash commands! Yay,
Todd! He still has some work to do on his stay command, but we know that
he'll get it in no time! Todd has found his forever home, and we couldn't be
happier for him. We'll miss having him as our ambassador at events, but are
so happy that he will be smiling at his new family members very soon!

Week 8
His handler reports that "Big Todd" is starting to feel more like himself!
"He's acting normal and is moving and walking better." Even though Todd is
"acting normal," his handler kept his training low-key this week. They
worked on the "touch" command. "I put my hand out and told him to touch.
When he responded, I treated him." Todd was also able to go out and be
sociable with his fellow human block mates! We're so happy that you're
feeling better, "Big Todd!"

Week 7
Todd still isn't feeling up to par, so his handler spent the week making
sure that he got plenty of "house rest" and taking care of his little boy's
needs. Todd's very good about taking his medications, and we HOPE that he's
back to his cute self very soon! Our thanks to his handler for bringing Todd
back to his road to recovery!

Week 6
Todd and his handler worked on his "sits" and "stays" this week. Todd can
still be a little stubborn at times when going through his drills, but
overall, he's getting better at learning life with his new handler. Todd
loves romping in the yard with Chi Chi, Justin and Casey! All of the
handlers are so happy to see their dogs having fun with one another! Todd
won't be running in the yard for a little while because he's not feeling up
to par. He's okay! Todd just needs some rest and relaxation and the
attention of his handler, who will know how to give him the care that he
needs right now. We know that Todd will shine when he finds his special
niche in this world. Here's hoping you find it soon, Todd!

Week 5
Todd got a new handler this week, and they're having a good time getting to
know one another. In fact, Todd's new friend can't wait to work with him to
find his forever family! Todd was at the Meet and Greet at Borders in Camp
Hill on Saturday and he once again showed what a good little ambassador he
is to the program! Although he was shy around some of the people he met,
Todd loved watching the door to see who was coming through it next! In fact,
one of the staff members at Borders mentioned what a good little greeter he
was! Todd went for a walk with one of the HOPE volunteers and showed his
excellent manners while walking on a loose-leash. Yes, Todd can be shy at
first, but once he knows he has a friend, he's a cuddly little soul. Now,
all Todd needs is a family member to cuddle up to in his forever home. Paws
crossed that you find that home soon, little boy!

Week 4
Todd showed us what a good HOPE ambassador he is at the Furry Fun Days event
in Shippensburg last Saturday and at the Yappy Hour event sponsored by Doc
Holliday's and Frozen Woofys on Tuesday. He loved sitting on the laps
of the HOPE volunteers and was very good with all of the dogs that he met at
both events. Todd was a quiet pup who, when not being a lap dog, loved
sniffing out the new scents that he encountered. Boy, can this pup sniff! Of
course, since Todd was so good, he got some special treats from the HOPE
volunteers. He waited patiently to get his rewards and was very gentle when
accepting them from his friends. The HOPE volunteers were rewarded in return
by receiving his sweet smiles of thanks. You're a charmer, little boy!

Week 3
Todd is coming along very nicely. His handler continued to work with him to
adjust to being a member of the pack and Todd has done really well this past
week! Todd's handler is taking his time with his training regimen because of
his short attention span. But, in just three short weeks, Todd can sit and
do his downs really well. "Todd trusts me so we'll work it out. It's a slow
process but he has already come a long way." Another handler who "has had
the pleasure to work" with this pup this week, says that he's really smart,
doesn't pull when on-leash, and has very good recall. Todd doesn't like the
heat we've been experiencing, so his handler has been careful to make sure
that this pooch is in his comfort zone. He knows that when he gets a nudge
on his hand, Todd has had enough of being in the great outdoors and that
it's time for him to curl up on the cool floor of their cell and relax.
Speaking of the great outdoors, as we've learned, Todd doesn't like bird
feathers or brown leaves in his path. This week, he did show a fondness for
nature. "I don't know what Todd's thing is with worms. He'll go in the yard
and dig them up and then he'll try to roll in them." Needless to say, Todd's
handler is keeping an eye on him since he doesn't think that rolling in
worms is the best thing for his pup. Todd continues to be a sweetheart to
those around him! He has fans on the block who want to pet him. Todd is
doing a very good job at waiting for them to say hello to him before getting
his pets. Todd's handler also has found that giving him a bath is a real
pleasure. He just picks him up, lathers him up and rinses him off. Todd also
dries off very easily. His handler takes him out to the doggie yard and
within ten minutes, he's dry! Luckily, Todd didn't find any of those worms
in the yard to roll around in, otherwise, we know that there would have been
another bath in his future! You're a sweetheart, Todd!

Week 2
Todd is doing great. He started his command training this week by learning
not to jump up on people and to wait before going out of a door. Todd also
worked with some of the other handlers on coming out of his crate. "It's not
so much getting him out as it is his wanting to come out." His handler
suggested to the other guys that they use the cheese to coax him out of the
crate. "That should do the trick." Todd is still adjusting to becoming a
member of the pack, but his handler is working to assure Todd that the other
dogs are his friends. This pup met a baby rabbit this week, and although he
was inquisitive, he didn't attempt to harm or to get closer to it. He also
encountered a brown leaf. Like the bird feathers last week, for some reason,
Todd was scared of the leaf. "He'd go up to it, sniff it and then back up
real fast and pull away. It's cute, but I'm trying to let him know that the
leaf won't harm him." His handler reports that Todd is a "bundle of joy. He
enjoys being petted and loved." Keep enjoying those pets, Todd, and know
you're safe with your handler!

Week
1
Todd and his handler had a great week getting to know one another.
Since Todd weighs about 60 pounds less than the last dog his handler
trained, when he takes Todd for a walk, he's "constantly checking to see if
I still have a dog on the leash!" It only took a few days for Todd to settle
into the prison routine. He's learned that his handler always comes
back after he leaves for work and he's also learned that his crate is an
okay place to stay. Good boy! Todd showed some fear when he came across some
bird feathers on a sidewalk during one of his walks this week. He tried to
run away from them, but his handler picked up the feathers and showed Todd
that he was safe around them. Todd smelled them, pushed them with his nose,
and then acted like nothing happened. Todd has some funny habits that keeps
his handler entertained as he gets to know him. "He'll go to his food bowl,
get a mouthful of food and walk over to our rug, spit it out and then eat
it." One evening, Todd was on his handler's bed and he gave him some
treats. Todd took the treats, pushed them all together with his nose and
then one by one tossed them on the floor. Todd thought nothing of it, but
his handler "nearly split a gut laughing!" Other than having Todd wait to go
in and out of their cell, and teaching him that his paws must be clean
before entering their space, Todd's handler focused on their bonding this
week. Next week, let the training begin! His handler doesn't think there
will be any problems, because Todd is a smart pup...and he also has no
problem being touched or picked up by anyone he's met on the block! We're
looking forward to hearing about your adventures, Todd!
