Week 16
Toby’s had a good week! One of his handlers had him out in the yard with
Gina. They were on-leash, but they did very well with each other. One of
this pup’s handlers has been saying for a few weeks now, that, although he
would hate to see him go, Toby deserves a good home because “he is a great
dog.” His handler got his wish! This pup was in rescue for half of his life
before spending the last four months at SCI Camp Hill. Now, Toby is headed
to his forever home on Sunday! We know that your new parents will love your
leans and soulful eyes, sweet pup! Your handlers and all of us in the HOPE
program wish you love and happiness with your new family!

Week 15
Toby’s handlers report that although he still acted, “depressed” at times,
it’s wasn’t as often, and he got better as the week went on. Toby and Mimi
have been spending a lot of time together. Although they’re still on-leash
during these times, they have been taking walks and laying next to each
other. Their handlers plan to let them share a dog run once they get more
comfortable with each other. Toby was introduced to the doggie pool this
week, and he loved it! “It took a minute for him to go in, but once he did,
he didn’t want to come out. He was even ‘bobbing’ for treats. He did really
well, and had a great time. I had a great time watching him and knowing that
he was having fun. Hopefully, he’ll get a home soon because he really
deserves it.”

Week 14
Toby is hanging in there waiting for someone to bring him home. And,
finally this week he got, not one, but two applications for him. This
boy has been a little down in the dumps lately. He's been doing such a
great job with his training and getting passed over so many times would be
hard on anyone. Here's hoping that by this time next week we'll have
some good news to share. Paws crossed...

Week 13
In between raindrops, Toby was able to have a lot of fun time out in the big
doggie yard this week! “He loves to run around, and he’s really trying to
get his paws on the groundhogs that live out there. He loves looking for
them! Toby is most happy when he’s around you. He loves to have his neck
scratched, and he’s just great to have around.” Here’s to neck scratches in
your forever home, Toby!
**Toby has been on the cell block for over three months without a single
inquiry. We know it's a tall order to find a great home that has no
other animals, but we know it's out there. Please pass along Toby's
story to anyone you would trust to give him the home he deserves. Thank
you!**

Week 12
Toby’s handlers report that he continues to do well with his commands. “His
stay is very good, along with everything else. With all of the rain, we
haven’t been able to spend much time outside as we normally do, so we know
that he can’t wait to get out and run around again. He has a lot of energy
for an older dog. Toby is just looking for someone to love him and spend
time with him. He is a great dog who loves attention and who is so happy
just to be around you.” Is there anyone out there to give Toby the love that
we in the HOPE program and his handlers know he so deserves?

Week 11
Toby’s handlers reinforced the fact this week that he knows every command
they’ve taught him. Sometimes, Toby has issues with a couple of the other
dogs at the prison, “but, he’s not the aggressor, he reacts when dogs react
to him.” This pup also “loves running around the yard and playing!” Toby was
the HOPE Ambassador at the Petapalooza event on Saturday sponsored by the
Petco Foundation and hosted by Best Friends Furever. He did his handlers
proud! He was a quiet boy who loved all of the attention that he received!
One of the HOPE volunteers took him for a long walk, and he was a perfect
gentleman the whole way! Toby took treats gently from those who offered them
to him, and performed his sit, paw and down skills for strangers. Of course,
this pup’s favorite things about the event was having an opportunity to lean
into the HOPE volunteers, look into their eyes, and receive the love that he
so deserves. If you, or anyone you know, is willing to adopt a senior dog,
this love bug is your dog! Paws crossed for you, sweet Toby!

Week 10
“Toby has been well. He knows all of his commands, walks well on-leash, and
is ready to be part of someone’s family. All Toby wants is to be loved. He
is so good with people, and he’s also starting to get along good with the
other dogs here.“ Will someone out there love Toby? His handlers, and all of
us in the program, HOPE so.
Toby went on a training field trip this week with his friend Margie.
Afterward, they made a stop at Brusters Ice Cream for a special treat.
Toby loved all the extra attention, but especially loved the doggie sized
ice cream treat that was all for him! Toby is just the sweetest boy
you could ever hope to meet. He has yet to have a single application
or inquiry for him. We can't understand why. Toby is so special
and we just know that someone else will see that soon. Paws crossed...

Week 9
Toby’s handlers report that there’s “not a whole lot to say about Toby,
other than he’s ready to have a home. He knows his commands, he does great
with people, and he does fine with friendly dogs.” If you are someone who
favors embracing an older dog into your home, please consider Toby. He’s a
sweetheart, who will make your heart melt as soon as you look into his eyes,
and feel his body leaning into yours for some comfort and love.

Week 8
Toby continued to please his handlers with his homework assignments this
week. “He knows all of his commands. His walking is great, but he does pull
a little when he gets excited.” Toby responds well, however, to a “back”
command when this happens. This pup has come through the school of hard
knocks. He is still a little fearful around large groups of people or loud
noises, but with his handlers’ help, we know that Toby will learn to trust
humans again. “He’s a good boy.”
Toby is the last of our senior crew who is still waiting for a home of his
own. He is a loving, mature, settled boy who is still up for a good
romp in the yard. He is a loving companion who is easy to train and
eager to please. Won't you take a second look at this boy and help him
find his way home?

Week 7
“Toby has been doing very well. We worked on silent commands a lot this
week, along with stays and distance stays. The longest stay was the length
of the dog yard, and I even walked behind the little building [in the yard],
and he stayed until I released him. We also worked on his recalls and
loose-leash walking. We do a lot of loose-leash walking and he’s good at
that. Even with no leash, he is by your side. He really made us proud this
week with the way he listened to us.” Since Toby sometimes gets a little
excited during his training, and has to be told a command more than once, we
can understand his handlers’ feelings of accomplishment! “Toby’s a very good
dog, who will make someone very happy. He just wants to be loved, and to be
around you. It seems like he can’t stay away for too long before he’s
looking at you, wagging his tail and wanting to be scratched or petted.”
HOPEfully, you’ll find a family to look into those adorable eyes of yours,
and give you all of the scratches and pets you so deserve, sweet Toby!

Week 6
Toby is the perfect gentleman. He loves to spend time with his people
and is always eager to greet old friends and strangers alike. He has
impeccable manners and is an absolute joy to be around. Toby is
polishing his obedience skills. He already knew a good bit prior to
arriving at the prison so his handlers are working with him to put the
finishing touches on. That way, when the right home comes along, he'll
be all set and ready to go. Toby had a playdate with Nemo this week.
They were outdoors with their handlers for some socialization and individual
training. As it happened, they were in adjacent runs and, after they
finished their work, seemed to really enjoy each other's company. Toby
truly appreciates when other dogs have good manners. It puts him at
ease and lets him just relax and enjoy their company. This sweetheart
is a diamond on the rough. He has spent so much time waiting for
someone to see him for the true gem that he is. We all see it.
Everyone at his rescue saw it. Now, all he needs, is for someone else
to see that too. To see the sparkle in his eye, the sweetness in his
manner and the incredible loyalty that he will offer to the person lucky
enough to call him family.

Week 5
Toby’s handlers report that “for the most part, he had a good week. He does
get into the ‘I’m not listening to you’ mood lately, and I think that his
taking correction from us is like a punishment for him.” Toby practiced his
“down” and “stay” commands over the last few days, and “he is getting better
with them each day. When he gets excited, he jumps on you, and we are
working on that also.” Since Toby lived half of his life in a rescue, it’s
hard to imagine what he’s thinking about all of the love and attention he’s
receiving at the prison. Now he needs someone to give him that love and
attention in a place he can truly call home.

Week 4
Toby got a new cellie this week, and he has already adjusted to having a new
person in his space! This pup knows his sit, stay, touch and shake commands
like the back of his paw. One of his handlers reports that his down command
still needs a little work, but since he’s a fast learner, he thinks that
he’ll be able to grasp this skill in no time as well. Sometimes Toby can get
a little “mouthy” when he plays with his handlers, but he stops mouthing
when they tell him no. “Toby just wants attention. He’ll do anything for
someone that pets him.” Here’s to a forever family and lots of pets in your
future, Toby!

Week 3
Toby’s handler reports that he continued to make progress this week. “He is
getting better on his recalls, as well as his other training. We had him out
in the main yard, and he ran around, smelled all of the new smells, and had
fun. Toby loves playing with his rope toy…it’s like he’s a puppy again.”
Toby showed how much he likes to be with people at the CPAA Clinic and Pet
Appreciation Day on Saturday. Admittedly, he seemed a little overwhelmed by
all of the dogs who were there in an indoor space, but he took comfort by
leaning into the HOPE volunteers and receiving their pets and soothing
words. This boy is a definitely a “leaner,” and we know that he’ll grow into
the idea of being an ambassador for the program…even if he doesn’t like hot
dogs! Looking into Toby’s eyes is like looking into his soul. “Toby loves to
be with you, and is very loyal. You make his day when he’s around you, and
he makes yours as well.”

Week 2
Toby is off to a fantastic start! This beautiful boy wins everyone
over with his gorgeous eyes. When he meets you for the first time,
Toby almost seems to look right through you. He is so sweet and loves
to be snuggled. He already knows many of his basic commands so his
handlers are already beginning to work on some more complex skills.
Toby is such a gentleman and will make a great companion. He loves to
go for walks and has terrific leash manners. He also loves to just
spend time with his handlers and enjoy their company.
Field Trip Alter (as told by his HOPE friend, Margie):
Toby is a doll. I took him over to the Boiling Springs lake. Some of the
locals had organized a ST PUPPY's celebration. We got there a little late,
but there were still lots of dogs and people. Toby met a couple of the dogs
and did fine. There were kids running, people on bikes riding by and lots
of ducks and geese. Toby wasn't bothered by anything. He didn't even get
upset when we walked by a group of geese and they started screaming at him!
Toby also did great with his loose leash walking. We walked along the lake
with a friend and his dog and he remarked that Toby could teach his dog some
leash manners. Then Toby and I took off down one of the trails - he really
seemed to enjoy that - lots of new smells. Along the way, we practiced some
sits, downs and "paw". He did great and he was especially enthusiastic
about the "down". We finished up by walking thru town and then around the
Boiling Springs bubble where Toby waded into the creek to get a much
deserved drink. As you know I'm big on eye contact, and Toby has great eye
contact. We practiced the "watch" command and he'll look right at you with
just the sweetest look. When we got back to the prison, Toby again showed
off his leash skills thru the yard and back to the block. We had a great
time together.

Week 1
Toby’s handler describes him as a “very loving dog who loves to be around
you and is happy all of the time.” Toby can be somewhat stubborn at times,
but as his handler says “who isn’t?” This pup is learning his leash manners
and isn’t pulling on it much at all! He also does his sit, down and paw
commands with ease. Toby’s still working on his recall skills, but since he
“seems to be a fast learner and really likes treats,” we’re sure that he’ll
get that skill in no time as well. Toby was introduced to a football in the
big yard this week and loved playing with it! We know you’re going to do
well during your journey in the program, Toby!
