Week 11
Tia's wish for Santa this year was to find a forever home, and Santa granted
her wish! This sweet girl can now curl up in the arms of her new family
members, watch TV and know that she has found a place to call her own. Her
handler will miss her dearly, but we're sure he's proud that he was able to
give Tia HOPE.

Week 10
Tia worked on her canine socialization skills this week. She and Mack got to
meet one another and all was well. She has met most of the dogs in the
program "up close and personal", and is much better about being around them
than she was when she entered the program. Good girl, Tia! This pup also
continues to do well with her loose-leash walking! As you have read, Tia is
a snuggler. "She loves to lay/curl around my arm. She'll sleep for hours,
until it's time for me to get up. The only bad part is that she snores...so
loud sometimes, that it wakes me up! Overall, though, Tia is an excellent
dog who loves to run in the yard non-stop, but also loves to just relax with
me and watch TV."

Week 9
Tia's loose-leash walking is really coming along! She used to pull, but she
now knows not to go any further than a few steps in front of her handler.
She and Falkor practiced parallel walking in the yard this week, and "she
couldn't have cared less if Falkor was there. When they did come across each
other's paths, they just sniffed each other and went their separate ways."
Tia still needs some work on her recalls. Sometimes she'll run right to her
handler, and other times, she'll venture to another path. She still gets
excited when she meets people, but she's much better at curbing her
enthusiasm than she was just a few weeks ago! Tia loves the doggie yard.
"Boy is she fast!" She continues to amuse her handler by insisting on
running with a basketball as big as she is in her mouth! When inside, Tia's
new favorite toy is the pink dog wearing a Christmas hat that she got as a
special treat from our groomer, Dirty Dog Mobile Makeover, on Monday. "She
loves it so much, and carries it everywhere she goes in the cell." We HOPE
you find special toys in a forever home of your own soon, sweet Tia!

Week 8
Tia showed some improvement in a couple of areas this week! First, she's
calming down faster than she was before. If she gets excited, her handler
puts her in a "sit," rubs her head and tells her to relax. If that doesn't
work, he simply walks her away from whatever got her excited in the first
place. "She has definitely improved since first arriving here." Tia also was
introduced to a harness this week, and "her walking is 100 times better."
Her prey drive is also subsiding. Tia and Georgie were able to approach each
other, and "check each other out" this week. Tia's handler hopes to
introduce her to the other dogs soon. In the meantime, Tia loves her
handler's bed. "Any chance she gets, she'll hop up in bed with me. As soon
as I lay down, she wants to cuddle right up under my arm. She is so cute!"

Week 7
Tia's loose-leash walking improved this week! Sometimes when another inmate
or dog gets close to her, she loses her focus, but her handler is happy with
her progress nonetheless! "Tia is a great dog with a high energy level. She
loves playing with the basketballs and soccer balls in the yard. She will
run with either ball in her mouth as she plays with the other handlers and
dogs in the program. It's funny to watch, because you have this little dog
carrying a ball in her mouth that's about as big as her!" Tia wasn't able to
play as much this week because she had some pain in one of her back legs.
She's doing okay, but her handler rewarded her with some extra snuggle time
on his bed to show her that she's loved, and that he appreciates her
perseverance with her training even though she's not feeling up to par. "Tia
likes to sleep with her head on my arm up against my pillow. She is a great
dog to relax with." We HOPE you're relaxing in a home of your very own soon,
Tia!

Week
6
Tia had another great week. She loves her evening practice time
because it involves getting to visit with and greet all sorts of inmates and
staff members. She couldn't be happier than when she's getting petted,
snuggled and gushed over by all of her adoring fans. Her commands are
coming along nicely and she's doing much better around the other dogs.
She's still an "only dog" sort of pet, but what she lacks in doggie manners,
she more than makes up for in her people skills.
This week, Tia took a trip to Borders for our monthly meet & greet.
She was a hit with everyone she met, including the giant Curious George who
came to visit with her. Tia loved all of the people and we lost track
of all the kisses she gave out. She was a wonderful ambassador for the
HOPE Program and we hope she'll soon find a home that will love her as much
as we do!

Week 5
Tia worked on her basic skills and loose-leash walking again this week.
Since she's still a youngster, Tia sometimes has a short attention span when
she's in the company of a lot of people or the other dogs during her
training sessions. Her handlers have been working with Tia around Shelby and
Georgie, and have been doing parallel walking with her and the other dogs.
Tia continues to do well with staying in one place while she eats. She also
likes to SNIFF and inspect the treats her handlers offer her before gently
taking them from their hands! Tia is a social butterfly when she's out in
the dayroom! "We are introducing her to many inmates. She is doing great
with greeting/meeting all of them." Her handlers also report that Tia "loves
to play morning, noon and night. She is an energetic, playful puppy!" Tia
was introduced to something new this week. "We are allowing Tia to lay on
the bed. We are giving her this time on the bed as a reward." Keep up the
good work, little girl, and here's to a lot of snuggle time on your
handlers' beds!

Week 4
In addition to continuing to progress with her basic commands, Miss Tia is
mastering her loose-leash walking skills. Her handlers have been walking her
in the doggie yard and in the day room and she's "doing well" with the
training! Tia really enjoys her crate. In fact, many times she prefers
laying there, even when her cell door is open. As her handlers reported last
week, Tia likes to eat her treats in her crate. This week, she started doing
that with her food as well. "Tia was taking her food from her bowl and
eating it in her dog crate. This was making a real mess in her crate and on
the floor. We are making Tia eat her food while standing in front of her dog
bowl." As for her treats, "Tia loves to eat and chew rawhide strips. She
will spend hours chewing on them. Tia is very polite when taking dog treats
and eats them in a lady-like manner." Her handlers are also having their pup
interact more with her two-legged and four-legged block mates and she's
doing well. Of course, as our handlers have reported since meeting her, what
Tia loves most is "to be talked to and hugged while watching TV. She watches
you with eye contact while you're talking to her." We HOPE you can be
looking into the eyes of your forever family members soon, Miss Tia!

Week 3
Tia is continuing to do well with her basic sit, stay, down and recall
commands! Her handler is learning each day to understand Tia's body
language. Tia excelled at walking parallel with Shelby, Ginger and Duke this
week. Good girl, Tia! Her handler also reports that "she is a lovable dog
who loves laying with you while you're watching TV. We were watching an old
Army movie and a German Shepherd came onto the screen. Tia stood up and was
very attentive. It was so funny watching her as she watched the other dog on
the TV!" Tia's handler also says that he thinks it's comical that when he
gives her a treat while in their cell, she runs into her crate to enjoy it!
This pup continues to make friends with both the inmates and the staff at
the prison. In fact, some of the staff members come by every day to see her.
Here's to cuddling up and watching TV with your forever family soon, sweet
Tia!

Week 2
Tia's handlers report that "she's coming out of her shell, and is very
active." Since she's such a young pup, Tia has a short attention span, but
her handlers believe that this will improve over time. Tia started her
lessons in earnest this week. In fact, she trains two or three times a day.
Tia rewarded her handlers for their efforts! "We did not expect her to
settle down and learn the sit/stay command by the end of week one of her
training!" Tia is still learning to become a member of her canine pack, but
she certainly loves meeting all of the new people she's encountering! "Tia
is a friendly dog around the inmates. They love to stop by her to play with
her." Tia enjoys playing fetch in the yard with a soccer ball or basketball.
"She loves to play tug-of-war with her ball!" After just a couple of weeks,
Tia exhibits good eating habits, and is gentle when taking treats from her
handlers. "Tia loves to be hugged, and hearing our voices. She is a joy to
have as a partner in the program."

Week 1
Tia's handlers welcomed her into their world on October 1st. Although
they're still in their "honeymoon period," Tia's handlers thought it would
be good for her to meet the other members of her pack. After just a few
days, she was romping with Dutch as if they were long lust buddies.
She's still getting used to some of her other canine block mates, but, at
this stage, Tia doesn't seem to have any problem with meeting the humans in
her world. She loves to get attention and will happily accept pets, snuggles
and belly rubs from her new friends. We're looking forward to hearing
about your adventures, little girl! Enjoy your journey to your forever home!

UPDATE - 9/30/10
Tia is scheduled to start classes at the big house this coming week. Her handlers
can't wait to meet their new canine cellie! Tia is a sweet, young pup who
just needs a crash course in the basics and then she'll be ready for
"parole." Tia
is a one and half year old Boston Terrier/Pit mix and is available for
adoption through Diamond Dog
Rescue.
