Thunder spent his last week at the prison “hanging out with everybody on the block” and playing and sliding in the snow.  His handlers threw snowballs for him to chase as well!  They also worked on honing Thunder’s basic commands to get him ready to his forever family.  “He is really a good dog.  We will miss him so much.  We hope he likes his new home.”

Week 20
Thunder is still looking for his forever family.  “I am a caring and loving dog.  I’m hoping that I will eventually get a good home.  I know my sit, stay, paw, watch and touch commands.  I play with all of the dogs that I have contact with.  This week, Duke chased me around the yard.  I love to run outside and catch a ball.  One day, I was running so fast, that I slid in the mud.  I had so much fun, and had mud all over me.”  We bet you also had fun getting a bath after your romp in the mud too, silly boy!

Week 15
Thunder’s handlers focused on his basic commands this week. A few of the other handlers helped with this pup’s training, so he got to know his commands from people other than his cellies.  “He is doing well, and is ready for his forever home!!” Thunder headed off to an adoption event over the weekend and charmed everyone. He played with some potential new "brothers" and "sisters" and then moved onto giving his trademark Thunder kisses to some potential "parents." Fingers crossed for you Thunder!

Week 14
This pup got gold stars from his handler this week for his interactions with Jackie and his good behavior in the officer’s room.  He also helped his handler write his journal! “Hi.  My name is Thunder.  I am a caring and loving dog.  I know all of my commands, and I listen really well.  I will follow you around where ever you go.  My hobbies are running, playing tug of war and sleeping.  I get along with everyone I see, and I love playing with other dogs too.  Just look at my picture and you will see what type of dog I am.”  This handsome boy would love nothing more than a home to call his very own.   We know that someone will appreciate your sweet spirit, Thunder, and make your dream come true!

Field Trip Alert (as told by HOPE volunteer Ronay): Last week, I decided to see how Thunder does in real life situations. I have only had him on trails and in dog parks so I had no idea how he would do say walking through a neighborhood etc. I picked him up and his harness was still way too loose so once I got him in the car I took it off of him and tightened it and put it back on with ease. He watched everything I was doing...so cute! Then we hit the road. Thunder is not a huge fan of the car, but he is learning to relax a little more each time. We stopped and got gas. He was not so sure about me getting out of the car and him not being with me. He followed every move I made and whined but kept his attention on me at all times.. I did have the window down enough that I could talk to him and pet him. He was fine when I did that and he watched intently as I got gas. He was very happy when I was back in the car with him and I received many kissed! We then set off to New Cumberland to walk around town. He was absolutely amazing! He spooked a couple of times over very random things. His only big issue was the bridge. He wanted to go to it so of course I took curious George to the bridge. Thunder does NOT LIKE bridges!!! He froze when he stepped onto it and I finally had to pick him up and take him off of it! He was fine after he shook that off and did well there after. He is very house curious. There were several porches he wanted to visit. He was the same in the car going back as he was going. I don't think he likes the "motion" off the car. He is fine when the car is not in motion. He is such a great dog!

thunderWeek 13
Thunder's handlers say he is more than ready for "parole." He is doing really well with all of his training and is even helping to train some of the other dogs in the progrfam. His easy-going, playful nature puts everyone at ease and makes him a friend to everyone he meets - human or canine! Thunder made a new friend this week in Brownie. Watching the smallest dog in the program chase after the biggest dog in the program is something everyone should have the good fortune to see. It's 100% giggle worthy and brightens everone's day when the two of them are out romping around together. Thunder is a very sweet boy and is ready to move on to better days now that he's mastered his training. All that's left is to find him the home he deserves!

Field Trip Alert (as told by HOPE volunteer Ronay):On Friday, I took Thunder to Lower Allen Dog Park and then to Benny's Pet Depot. He was better leaving the prison this time, not as hyper as our last trip. He was also better in the car this time. Thunder was a such a good boy at the park. I thought we would start there and get rid of any pent up energy. We then went to Benny's so I could get him a new harness. Boy does he like to shop! He was so intrigued with everything at the pet store. The ladies there just loved him!! He let us try a few harnesses on him. He is getting so broad, coming into his teenage body. We found a harness that he can use now with a little extra tightening. He seems to be between sizes! This harness should last him into his adult body. It looks great on him and he seemed to like it a lot. I got him a banana peanut butter woofie. He was in heaven! I cannot tell you how many banana peanut butter kisses I got that day. He loved it! He is just so happy and handsome!

Week 12
Thunder may have found himself a girlfriend this week. He and Angel have the best time together. He's the only dog who can tolerate Angels's exuberant play so they became fast friends. Thunder wrestles with her and they run around for a game of chase. They are like old pals who love to catch up with each other every single day. Thunder worked hard on his leash manners this week and is making good progress. He's a very strong boy, but he wants to please and tries his best to comply with whatever is being asked of him. Thunder has made quite a few friends since his arrival on the cell block. He's a living example of the term "gentle giant." He may seem like a big tough boy, but see him in action with all of his doggie friends and you'll see the true, sweetness come through. Then he'll wander over you to give you a big doggie smooch and you'll be done for! He charms everyone he meets.

thunderWeek 11
Thunder worked on his leash walking skills this week.   When he pulls, his handlers stand still or change direction, “and that seems to work.  Thunder is really friendly and he quickly accepts new people and dogs into his life.” This pup has made friends with Brownie, but “he gets along swell with his girlfriend, Angel.  They can’t wait to run around and play off leash together.  Other than that, he’s doing well, and he’s always thinking about a nice family who he can love.”  Could you make Thunder’s wish for a forever family come true?  We HOPE so!

Week 10
Thunder’s handlers report that he’s doing well with almost all of the dogs in the program!  He got really close to Jackie, and both pups had a positive experience.  He was also introduced to Brownie and Angel this week, and their reactions to one another show that they’ll be spending more time together in the days to come.   Thunder took a particular liking to Angel.  “We had them in the dog runs, and they played around and licked each other through the fence. Thunder has found a new girlfriend.”  His handlers only HOPE that someone or some family will enjoy his fun-loving personality as much as they do!

Week 9
Thunder continued to progress well this week!  “He is a wonderful dog.  Everyone seems to love him, and from what we see, the feeling is mutual.  Thunder especially loves to come out on the block at recreation time.  If we leave him in our cell during rec time, he catches an attitude and just stares at us with a pouty lip!  Overall he is doing well, and is ready for his forever home!”

Week 8
Thunder’s handlers continued to just love being with him this week!  “He’s doing good on his commands.  He comes when he’s called, and listens very well.  He loves to play with the soccer ball in the yard.  He runs so fast that he can’t even stop… he just kind of slides and lands on his side.  Thunder loves peanut butter. He starts to drool when he sees it.  He also got to spend more time with the officers this week.  He is a really good dog.  We love him so much.” We love you too, little boy, and HOPEfully, a forever family will feel the same about you as we and your handlers do, Thunder!

Field Trip Alert (as told by HOPE volunteer Ronay): Thunder and I had a great time on Sunday. We went to Messiah College and Lower Allen Park. He gets so excited but it is so cute, especially when he makes the cooing sound like a baby. I had noticed after we left Messiah that the harness had begun to rub him a bit so I switched over to his collar and he was fine for me. Actually, a little better walking then on the harness. He did get spooked a bit while we were at the college. Two girls were running and I heard them coming but I guess he didn't. When they came around the corner, Thunder jumped and ran behind me scared to death. Poor guy. I assured him everything was ok and we walked on and he was fine.

Week 7
Thunder’s handlers concentrated on his recalls and basic commands to “reinforce his good behavior” this week.  “We always take time out for play/praise.  Everyone on the cell block loves our Thunder.  He enjoys just roaming around during rec time and getting a lot of pets.  He also gets invited to the Officer’s room, and hangs out with a couple of them.”  Thunder also loves his canine friend, Buddy.  “They are becoming the new odd couple since one is big and the other is small.  It’s so cool to see the two around one another.  Thunder is an all-around good dog, and hopefully soon, he will get a forever family so he can share all of his love with them!!”

Week 6
“Thunder is a good dog who is adapting to his environment.  He is learning all of his commands, and he is getting along well with the other dogs.  Just this week, Thunder and Buddy were kissing each other through their dog runs.  It was hilarious!  He is also playing with Kelsey, and we hope to let them get better acquainted in the next week.  All in all, Thunder is a swell dog who has a warm personality, and is as laid back as they come!!”  Keep making new friends, sweet boy!

Week 5
Thunder’s handlers report that not only is he doing better with his commands, he also learned to roll over this week!  This pup also did some parallel walking with Jackie, “but he still needs a little bit of work with this.”   Thunder loves his recreation time with his handlers!  “He loves to play fetch and tug of war with a ball.  He also loves to sleep a lot.  He is a really good dog, and we are happy to have him.”  Of course his handlers know that they will have to say goodbye someday when he finds his forever home.  “We will be really sad when he leaves.”

Week 4
Thunder’s 4th week was productive and fun for him.  “He is learning his commands, and is really starting to get a firm grasp of all the people in here.  At first, he was shy, but he’s coming around.”  Thunder is also learning what it’s like to be part of a pack. He met Rambo with no reaction from either dog!”   As his handler has reported before, this pup’s best friend is Ruby.  “They can’t get enough of each other.  Thunder loves to run and play and just lay around.  He is the best dog anyone could hope for.  Everyone here loves him!!”  Can you love him too?  We HOPE so!

thunderWeek 3
Thunder’s handlers report that “he’s really doing well with his commands this week.  He also gets along really well with everyone he comes in contact with.”   As his handlers reported last week, this pup really loves his contact with Ruby.  “They played together, rolling and around and chasing each other back and forth.  It was funny to see Thunder when he ran so fast, that when he went to stop, he slid right into her.  She didn’t mind though. Thunder likes to take a 15-minute nap after he plays.  We love him so much, and we think he would be a great addition to any family.”

thunderWeek 2
Thunder’s handlers started his training this week.  He already sits, does his down command, and is working on his loose-leash walking.  This pup also got some play time with Ruby and his handlers.  “He was rolling over and she was jumping up on him and licking his ear.  He also likes to play with us.  He had a great time.  Thunder is a great dog, and although we can’t wait for him to get a good home, we’re going to miss him when that time comes.”  HOPEfully, someone will be as smitten with you in no time as your handlers are, sweet boy!

Week 1
Thunder arrived at the prison last Sunday, and his handlers report that although he’s adapting to all of the new noises in his world, “he is becoming a cell block favorite!  He is a loveable dog, and he loves the attention.  All the guys think that he’s awesome.”  Thunder already gets along with a few of the other dogs in the program, and his handlers are working with him to accept all of them into his pack.  Of course, this means getting to know the other handers, and “he’s warming up to them rapidly!  Thunder is going to be a great addition to our little doggy family here!”  What a great first report, Thunder!  We’re looking forward to hearing how you do next week!

UPDATE 8-26-12
Thunder headed to the big house today. He is a handsome, young fella with plenty of love to give. He could definitely use a fresh start aftr the rough beginnings he has endured. Thunder was saved from a bullet when his owner decided that was the only thing left to do with him since he was going somewhere where Thunder could not come along. Thunder is a sweet, two year old Pit Bull mix who is available for adoption through Furry Friends Network.  Stay tuned for next week's update.
