Week 15
Tess was granted her "parole" this week and headed off to start her new life
in a wonderful home. She adores the cat, although he's slowly warming
up to her and she just loves her new family! Way to go, Tess!

Weeks 13 & 14
Tess not only continued to do well with her training this week, she took the
new pup, Hercules, under her paw and showed him the ropes of life at the
prison. Tess knows how to engage other dogs and bring out the best in them,
which makes her handler very proud. In fact, Tess and Hercules hit it off so
well that their handlers let them play together off-leash for a little
while. They also had a play date in one of their cells and all was well. Her
handler says that everyone loves Tess, and we're happy to report that she
will be going to her loving forever home very soon! Her new family stopped
by the HOPE table at Borders in Camp Hill to give the volunteers the good
news that Tess will be coming to live with them! We'll miss you, Tess, but
we know that you'll love your new Mom and brother. Keep staying as sweet as
you are, little one!

Week 12
Tess started to be more like her cute, playful self over the weekend. She
romped with Radar and Denver during their yard time. One day, the boys were
chasing Tess, but she easily outran them. They even tried to "box her in",
but she outsmarted them in that move as well! You go, girl! Tess continues
to excel in her training. Her handler didn't push Tess too hard this week
because she's still wasn't 100% herself. We're glad that your feeling
better, little girl!

Week 11
Miss Tess' handler says that his little girl has been under the weather.
Instead of concentrating on training, Tess rested while her handler made
sure that she was comfortable while she recouped. She charmed all of the
staff and clients at the vet's office and we're happy to say she's on the
mend. We all HOPE you feel
better soon, Tess!

Week 10
Not only did Tess continue to do well with her training this week, she
became the "hostess with the mostest" at the prison! Tess' handler says that
she "really knows how to read Radar." She decided it was time for Radar to
learn how to have some fun, so she engaged him in some good old fashioned
doggie play. Her handler says that it's sweet watching the two of them enjoy
each other's company. Radar also visits Tess' cell just to "hang out" with
her. Miss Tess also welcomed Denver into her space. They enjoyed some quiet
time together just laying back and nibbling on rawhide treats. You're a
charmer, Tess!

Week 9
Tess is doing so well! Since Mother Nature was good to Tess this week, she
was able to go out into the yard. "She really needed to run. She was like a
kid in a candy store." Tess is "doing super" with the "around" command, and
will even do so without a treat! She's still working on her "swing down,"
but overall, Tess is doing very good with her training.
Tess' handler would have been very proud of her if he could have seen her at
the Meet and Greet at the Camp Hill Borders on Saturday! Every customer
coming through the door was a new opportunity for snuggles and kisses in
Tess' opinion! When not greeting people with her cute face, Tess would greet
them on the back of their legs with her tail...it never stopped wagging! She
is such a sweet dog, and loves people of all ages! HOPEfully, Tess will find
her true place in this world very soon!

Week
8
Tess wasn't able to go to the play yard as much this week due to the
weather. That was okay with Tess, because she doesn't like to be outside in
the cold, especially if the wind is blowing. Her handler worked with her a
lot on the tier instead. Although she had her moments (like pulling to go up
to people she knows), her handler says that Tess did very well under the
circumstances. Once Mother Nature settled down a bit, and Tess was able to
go the yard, she wouldn't stop running! Here's hoping for a "heat wave" so
that you can enjoy your training and fun time in the yard, Tess!

Week
7
Tess is "doing good!" She still needs some more work with a few of her
commands, but overall, Tess is doing just fine with her training! Her bone
stuffed with treats continues to be her favorite toy. Tess is willing to
give it to her handler, however, when he asks her to do so. Tess also is
"great" when it comes to grooming! She likes to be pampered with a bath, a
good brushing of her coat and teeth, and having her paws cleaned after a
romp in the play yard. Her handler says that Tess also does "very good" and
doesn't react when he picks her up. Tess is a patient little girl at feeding
time. She sits or goes into a down position and waits until her handler
gives her the okay to enjoy her meal. What a cutie you are, Tess!

Week 6
Tess continued to do well this week! Her grasp of the commands she knows
improves each day, and Tess is mastering the new ones that her handler is
teaching her. She also was a perfect little lady when Cocoa came over to
visit her and her handler's cell for some extra crate training. Tess stayed
on the bed just like her handler asked while he worked with Cocoa to help
her improve with her training in the same way that he helped Tess.
Tess loved exploring the snow-covered doggie yard and couldn't wait to go
out and romp around in it with her best pal, Marty! They played for hours
until they were both completely wiped out! We're so proud of your
accomplishments, Tess! Keep up the good work!

Week 5
Tess and her handler weren't able to go outside much this week because of
the weather, but he kept her busy in their cell and on the tier to calm her
excitement level. Tess' commands are getting better. Sometimes she'll pop up
from the down position when she sees a treat coming her way, but her handler
knows that she'll grasp the concept in no time. Tess met the new kid,
Denver, this week. Although she took a shine to him, Marty is still #1 in
her book. Here's to better weather and romps in the yard with your best pal,
Tess!

Week 4
Tess discovered the joys of the Buster Cube this week. It took her
just a few seconds to discover that the more she played with the cube, the
more yummy treats came out for her to eat. She went bonkers for it and
got so excited each time a treat came out. Tess made friends with all
of the boys last week and had a ball playing with Bronko and Marty.
This week she met the girls and decided that Penney and Cocoa are just fine
in her book. Her favorite playmate is still Marty, They will
wrestle and roughhouse for hours out in the doggie yard. They share
their toys and and even their treats and are the very best of friends!
Tess is a big love. She absolutely thinks she is a lap dog and loves
all of the attention she is getting with her training. She is a friend
to every person she meets and has yet to meet a dog she doesn't want to make
her friend too. She is a diamond in the rough and anyone would be
lucky to have her as part of their family.

Weeks 2 & 3
Although she still tends to get distracted, Tess is doing "much better" with
her commands! Her with-me walking lessons go better after she has had some
exercise and when she knows that there may be a treat in her future.
Without a treat, it's still hit and miss. Sometimes Tess will walk
beside her hander and other times she wants to be the one to take HIM for a
walk! But, he has faith in her...she'll get it. Tess has been
quieter in her crate this past week and her handler learned that she loves
to sniff. Boy, you should see her go to work!
Tess had a wonderful Thanksgiving! One of the sergeants took her for a walk
around the tier a few times and then surprised her with a visit to the
officers' room for some pets and a few doggie snacks! Tess played with
all of her pack-mates this week, but took a special interest in Marty. The
two of them have become fast friends and love to chase each other, roll
around and play tug of war with a ball in the doggie yard! They even found a
treat in the grass and shared it. Tess' recall wasn't spectacular
while she was playing with her new pal so that will be one of her continuing
homework assignments. Overall, Tess' handler thinks that she "did pretty
good this week." We do too, Tess!

Week 1
Tess' handler says that she's a "smart and wonderful dog." She is an avid
student and has already learned quite a few commands. She has already
learned "paw [either one!]," "high-five," "spin," and the "leg weave!" She's
still trying to master the "down" command, but for it only being her second
week in the program, we're all impressed at her ability to learn new things!
Tess' handler "suspects that she will be able to do just about any trick"
that he teaches her. Tess has also gone from pulling "a lot" on leash to
walking next to her handler and some of the other handlers as well! At first
Tess was a tad "mouthy" when her handler left their cell, but she's
improving in that department as well!
Tess loves Champ! At first she was a little overbearing, but the handlers
corrected the problem...Champ was a perfect gentleman. A few gentle verbal
corrections nipped that behavior in the bud. Overall, Tess is getting along
with her pack-mates. Tess was a little nervous with all of the
different types of doors she encounters. But, she now gets to play
with her favorite toy and be comforted with treats to reinforce the fact
that the door leading to the doggie yard is nothing to fear!
Tess also had her first bath this week and didn't give her handler any
problems at all! "She's a real joy to have around. She's going to go far in
the program."

UPDATE - 11/12/09
Tess is as sweet as they come. The picture doesn't nearly do her
justice because she is just adorable. She never runs out of kisses and
has yet to meet anyone she doesn't like. She's a three year old yellow
lab/pit bull mix with a personality that will melt your heart. She
started her training today and is heading through the program to learn basic
manners and work on her obedience training. Tess has also been flagged
as an excellent candidate for the Helping
Hounds Program. Tess is available for
adoption through Greta's Rescue.
