His handlers report that “Taz is ready to go to his foster home. Hopefully,
all will be better for him in a new environment. He continues to let more
people pet him, he listens to all of his commands, and he is very treat
motivated.” Taz got to spend some of his last week at the prison playing
with his pal Sky. In fact, even when their handlers took them out for walks,
they found time to play with each other. Keep letting your guard down and
accepting more pets! We know that you’ll find your forever home someday,
Taz.
Update: Taz left the big house this week to return to
his foster home. His foster family will continue with his training and
keep on the straight and narrow. Good luck, Taz!

Week 17
Taz’s handlers report that he’s starting to show some improvement with
people. This pup needs to feel comfortable with someone new, but once he
does, he loves the pets he receives! Taz is doing so well on his basic
commands, that his handlers introduced walking on his back legs into his
training. “It’s actually pretty funny to see because he’s so small.” His
handlers also learned this week that Taz has a curiosity about frogs. Like
Nyla, he met one in the yard. “He saw it, and went to investigate. When it
jumped towards him, Taz jumped backward into a somersault trying to get away
from it. It was pretty funny to watch!” Taz, we can’t understand why no one
has put in an application for you. You’ve come such a long way since you
entered the program. Paws crossed for you, sweet pup!

Week 16
Taz’s handlers report that he expanded his circle of friends this week.
This, admittedly, feisty boy let one of the other handlers and another one
of the Corrections Officers pet him with no issues at all! Good boy, Taz!
This pup loves playing with Gina and Sky. “I’m sure he will be heartbroken
now that Gina left for her forever home. Poor guy!!” However, he still has
Sky in his life, and they had fun seeing who could outrun the other this
week. Yes, this boy is still a work in progress, but his handlers say that
“once he gets to know you, he’s a fun guy.”

Week 15
Taz’s handlers report that although he still nips at people, and can be
picky about his food and treats, it was a good week for this pup! He is
doing his down command better for his new handler, and he “shows improvement
with playing. He enjoys being with Gina and Sky.” He also learned the hard
way that bees are not his friends. As for his bed manners, Taz’s bunk mate
says that “his instruction to get on the bed is amusing. Seeing him sleep on
his back with his legs propped up is priceless!” Keep listening to your
handlers, little boy, and there will be a forever home (and maybe a
MasterCard commercial) in your future!

Week 14
Taz’s handlers report that it was a challenging week for them, because this
pup is still “a little feisty. We are working on his main issue of nipping.
After he is played out by running with the other dogs, we have people give
him treats with an open palm.” As a result, Taz had a breakthrough
with his interaction with the people in his world this week! In fact, one of
his handlers gave him gold stars on his report card for allowing other
handlers and two of the Correction Officers to pet him while he was
on-leash. “Also, one of the COs had him on his lap in his office for about ½
hour with no problems.” This pup got a new handler this week, and “he sure
is warming up to him. He sleeps right up under his feet with his head poking
out of the bottom of the bunk.” We’re very proud of you Taz! Keep up the
good work, little boy!

Week 13
Taz also got new handlers this week. After working with Gina, they say that
“Taz is an interesting guy, but he can be taught! After a few days of
settling into our cell, he quickly became comfortable with us. At first he
didn’t like us touching him, but we eased into it, and he slowly let us pet
him more and more. Now we can touch Taz all over for as long as we want to.”
Taz is also working on have others give him a pet. One of his handlers had
others come up to him, give him a quick scratch on the chin and walk off.
“This has been working well.” This pup loves to be off-leash with Gina and
Sky, both individually and as a group. If, for some reason, he gets a little
out of line with Gina, she quickly corrects him. “Taz gets excited every
time he sees Gina and Sky, and hopefully, we can get him off-leash with more
dogs in the program soon.” A lot of exercise seems to wear him out enough to
calm his ‘Taz-ittude.’ By the way, Taz has already warmed up to one of his
handlers so much that he now has bed privileges! You’re going to be fine
with your new cellies, little boy!

Week 12
Taz’s handlers had a good week with their pup. “This week, he learned and
experienced new things.” He learned to shake with both paws, “shake” being
his left paw, then “other paw” being his right one. His handlers also worked
on Taz’s prey drive by walking him by rabbit holes and telling him to “leave
it.” “The biggest breakthrough was that he found a play partner to wrestle
with and lay next to. Taz and Gina interact very well off-leash. They played
together several times in the dog yard. Taz dove and rolled over on his back
to fend off Gina. It was really hilarious “ His handlers hope that the fact
that he found a doggie friend will help him turn a corner in his training.
“After Taz was done playing with Gina, he let a couple of the other handlers
in the program pet him all over. It was a good week for this little guy!”

Week 11
His handlers report that “Taz worked on his usual commands and patience
training.” This pup is also getting the gist of the new “around” skill that
he was introduced to this week. “Taz’s treat/food motivation definitely
helps to get his attention, but he is a quick learner!” Taz' trust
level is beginning to grow. This week, a few new people were able to
go up to him and give him a pet without him reacting and that’s definitely a
step in the right direction. “He is so fun with us though! Taz also
looks forward to his walks with (HOPE volunteer) Margie, and he is doing
well with her!” Keep listening to your handlers, and a new home will be in
your future, sweet boy!

Week 10
Taz’s handlers report that this week, “he had a good old time learning
patience exercises, such as sitting at a doorway and waiting to go inside
until told to do so.” He also “has been socializing with many strangers who
successfully gave him a treat. Taz is more reliable in his behavior, and
continues to show improvement.” Not only has Taz learned how to interact
positively with his human tier mates, he is learning to interact positively
with his pack mates. “Taz has been parallel walking and sitting near Oscar,
Buddy, Mimi and Sky successfully.” Although he still can’t be off-leash
around them yet, his handlers are pleased with his progress. Taz really
enjoyed the nice weather last week! “He loves chasing birds and following
scent trails. His tail wags a mile a minute when he’s on the scent! It was a
good week for Taz!”
Field Trip Alert (as told by HOPE volunteer Margie) -
Yesterday was the 3rd time Taz and I have gone out and I think the two of us
have come a long way in the trust department. Last week I told him that
trust is a 2 way street and I think he listened. We went over to the park
and again I used the longer lead so that he could explore - he seems to love
doing that more than anything. This time as we walked along, I noticed that
Taz started to check in. He was rarely going out to the end of the lead and
every so often I'd catch him looking back at me, as if to say "are you
coming?". Each time he looked back, I let him know what a good boy he was.
When he was off exploring, I started calling him to come - that was a real
challenge. He was much too busy. So I started running back and forth
calling him - that did get his attention and he'd come running as fast as
those short little legs could carry him. I asked his handlers to work on
his "come" outside where there are distractions - there are a lot of
distractions for this little guy - groundhogs, birds, holes in the ground,
leaves! We also practiced some sits along the way which he was happy to do.
We ended our walk using his regular leash and he did real well with his
loose leash walking. In fact the only time he was really pulling on the
lead was when we were leaving the prison - does that really count? After a
drink from the creek, we headed over to Bruster's for a puppy cup to top off
a good day.

Week 9
Taz’s handlers report that “he is doing well will all of his commands.” They
also worked on his socialization with the other dogs by using the parallel
walking technique. “He is showing much improvement with this.” His handlers
also say that “it is important not to pet Taz right away until he gets to
know and trust you. However, he doesn’t nip at us and about four other
people on the block anymore.” Good boy, Taz! His handlers were pleased with
the report that Margie gave them after her outing with their pup. “He did
well enjoying the long distance of the 20-foot leash and enjoying a puppy
ice cream treat.” We’re looking forward to Margie’s full report about their
outing! You’re doing great, Taz!

Week 8
Taz’s handlers used play to help him with some skills this week. “He had fun
while learning, without even knowing it! “ Taz’s handlers played fetch with
him several times. “He loves playing fetch. His ears perk up and he hunts
down the toy that was thrown. If he gets distracted and only goes half-way,
we tell him “go get it,” and he will go pick up the toy. Then we say ‘bring
it here,’ he’ll bring it to us, and then wait anxiously for a treat.” Taz
also interacted positively with many people without reacting to them this
week. “He still has his moments, but he is improving.” Taz enjoyed the hot
weather as he basked in the sunlight “with a wide grin and his tongue
hanging out. It was a good week for Taz!”

Week 7
“This week included some hot days in which Taz ran around, worked on his on-
and off-leash walking, and his long distance sit/down stays. He did good.
His eager face and propped-up ears made us laugh! ” Taz even let someone
pick him up without incident this week. That’s a big breakthrough for this
pup! After playing in the heat, Taz likes to lays down to cool off. “He has
a grin on his face, so we know that he enjoyed the sun. It was a good week
for Taz!”

Week 6
Taz’s handlers continued to work on his commands, agility training and
learning how to relax a bit this week. He got his long-distance sits and
downs reliably! His no-pull leash walking is also improving. “Taz is doing
better and occasionally has to be reminded who is walking who, but with a
couple of corrections, we’re off to walk again! His ambition for cheese
definitely helps. He gives you those eager puppy eyes as if to say, ‘C’’mon,
please I’ll do anything for that treat! He is a loveable pup who likes to
shake your hand and give kisses in your ear.” We HOPE you find a family to
give plenty of kisses to, Taz!

Week 5
This week, Taz worked on greeting people without nipping at them. He’s a
feisty boy, but the good news is that with the “strangers with candy” and
“sit politely for petting” techniques have helped his handlers see a
difference in him. “Once Taz gets to know you, he doesn’t get nervous. His
anxiety is much less now when he’s being petted by a stranger!” You go, Taz!
This pup loves being outside watching the birds and being with the members
of his pack (especially Gina). Even though he still has some issues to work
through, “he is very loving and loves to snuggle up to you.” We hope you
find a family to love and snuggle you forever, Taz!

Week 4
“Running, jumping, leaping, soaring and sniffing is common when outside in
the fresh cut grass with Taz. He seems very determined when on a scent
trail, and loves investigating possible rabbit dwellings.” Such is the
breed, but his handlers have been working on his homework daily. Taz is
doing very well with his sit stays, down stays and commands. “He also
finally learned how to roll over. It wasn’t easy, but he trusts us. He is
extremely cheese motivated, so this helps very much!” His handlers work
together with Taz every afternoon helping him with his off-leash skills. “He
stays right by our sides.” That’s another breakthrough in this pup’s
training! Taz is also working on meeting new people without reacting to
them. “He’s still a little funny with them. It’s hard to describe. People
will be giving him pets, and he just decides that he’s had enough. He
doesn’t growl, but we know that he gets nervous after a while, and we’re
working on that. He’s getting better. Taz is doing quite well, and he will
be a very good pet for the right family!”

Week 3
“This week was very good for us and our little guy. He was great!” Taz now
has his sit, stay, down, and touch commands down pat. Last week, he wasn’t
sure about giving his paw, but now “he gives it willingly and seems proud of
himself for doing it. He is also doing so good with his heel command. Taz is
very strong-willed, but he is getting better on his leash.” This pup was
introduced to a doggie pool this week! He was unsure of it at first, but
treats helped him overcome his anxiety! “I put treats in the pool for him. I
waited until he got into the pool himself. He tried to get them by using his
paws, so I held a treat a little under the water and when he put his face in
the pool, I slowly put the treat lower in the water. He tried. It was his
first time doing this, so I’ll keep working on that. Taz is eager to learn
new things.” Keep learning, little boy! You’re doing just fine!

Week 2
“This week was a superb week for Taz!! He is an energetic, affectionate,
quick-learning little buddy.” Taz’s lessons included his sits, stays, downs,
“and he is slowly starting to give his paw.” His walking on-leash still
needs some improvement, but his attention span is getting much better!
Although Taz has already formed a special bond with his handlers, he’s still
unsure of strangers. So, they have been playing Taz’s favorite game
“strangers with candy,” and he’s doing much better. This pup continues to
love his rawhide. “He grabs it when he leaves his crate and when we lift him
up on the bed, he has to have it hanging from his tiny mouth. It’s very
funny to see.” Taz’s handlers took him out to the dog runs one afternoon
after a rainy morning. “He got very muddy, and we couldn’t give him a bath
in the usual spot. So, we filled our wash bin, and oh, yeah, he fit right in
it. We wish we had a camera, because you would have laughed when you saw the
picture! Taz doesn’t miss a beat. There was a fly buzzing around his head,
and in one quick movement, he snapped it out of the air and ate it! Taz
loves to snuggle up and sit in your lap when invited. He is also beginning
to give kisses. He is coming along fabulously…of course his love of food and
treats doesn’t hurt! Taz will definitely make some family very happy.”

Week 1
“This week we got Kobe, and he’s a little cutie!” His handlers report that
this pup not only already knows a lot of basic commands, but he also likes
to dance! Kobe’s issues include socialization with other dogs, walking on
leash without pulling, and resource guarding. His handlers will focus their
energy with Kobe’s training in the upcoming weeks to overcome his fears.
After just one week in the program, however, Kobe has brought smiles to his
handlers’ faces. “When he’s in his crate, and we call to him, he tries to
pick up his bone that we fill with peanut butter. The bone probably weighs
half as much as he does. So instead, we gave him a rawhide treat that he
carries out with him. It’s funny to see.” You’re going to be fine, Kobe!
**Kobe received the traditional prison nickname within just a few hours of
arriving on the cell block. Since his rescue had already asked that
his name be changed to help give him a fresh start, we thought the nickname
might be a perfect fit for him. So, Kobe is now officially Taz or, as
the fellas' on the cell block say, Little Taz.
