Week 14
Steven enjoyed the doggie pool during his last week at the big house and then bid a fond farewell to all of his friends...two and four legged!  He headed home over the weekend to begin a new chapter in what we're sure will be a long and very happy life for him.  Good luck, Steven!!

Week 13
Steven reached a huge milestone this week...he ignored a bird!!!  He and his handlers were outside playing in the dog yard and they were running him through some of his obedience skills when lo and behold a bird landed in the yard.  Steven's handlers kept their focus and amazingly so did Steven!  He also discovered his love of water this week.  He had a ball playing in the doggie pools.  And, on one particular day when the doggie pools were empty, he walked right over to the large water bucket and plopped himself right down into it.  Then, he proceeded to hop in and out of it splashing around the whole time.  He's such a sweet boy and we're happy to report that Steven was finally adopted over the weekend.  He'll be headed home at the end of the week.  Way to go, Steven!!

Week 12
Well, it looks like Steven will be having an extended prison stay since he still hasn't had any luck in finding a home of his own.  He'll be heading out on the town next week to be a therapy dog for a morning at ManorCare nursing home in Camp Hill and then he'll be heading over to Borders in Camp Hill to meet the world.  If you would like to meet Steven and see in person what an awesome friend he is, please stop by Borders on Saturday, August 16th between 12:00 and 3:00.  He would love to meet you!!!

Week 11
Another week and no one for Steven.  He is so ready to go home, but nothing has worked out for him so far.  He is such a sweet dog and would make a great companion to someone who loves the outdoors.  He is a friend to all of the other dogs at the jail and quite a hit with the staff and inmates.  His gently nature and sweet personality make it impossible not to love him.  Hopefully, someone will soon see the gem that we've all had the pleasure to know over the last few months.

Week 10
Steven had another good week full of playtime, chase-time and lots of practice with his obedience skills.  His handlers will be working with him this week to build his outdoor recall skill by using a stuffed bird toy tied to a string.  Since they have no control over the real birds that Steven loves to chase, they thought they would arrange to have their own "bird."  Good luck, Steven!!

Week 9
Steven's handlers tried some new techniques with him this week to continue strengthening his recall and his obedience skills.  It involved a lot of surprises for Steven and getting him to rethink his usual routines.  As usual, he rose to the challenge and the handlers had a great time helping him learn.  He's heading out at the end of the week for yet another home visit...paws crossed!

Week 8
What does this boy have to do to get himself adopted?  He has been on more home visits than all of the other dogs combined, but there's always something that keeps him from being chosen.  Here is Steven in a nutshell.  He's a very active, fun-loving boy who loves the outdoors.  Steven is a bit particular around other dogs at first, but generally settles in rather quickly.  He has many doggie friends at the prison.  It took a little longer to warm up to some than others, but doesn't that just sound like the rest of us?  Outdoors...he loves to watch, chase, stalk, chase, sniff and chase birds.  He would spend his whole day doing that if he was allowed.  An invisible fence wouldn't do Steven justice.  He definitely needs a secure fence that will allow him the freedom to chase and the security to stay home!  Indoors...he is the most lovely dogs you'll ever meet.  His house manners are terrific, not an accident to speak of.  He loves to jump up on new friends, but with consistency will learn that this will get him nowhere.  He likes to explore so it may take a few days for him to have sniffed out every corner of your home, but once satisfied he settles right in.  Because he is a young, active and adventurous boy he has scared off a lot of potential adopters.  But, we know that there is just the right person out there for him.  Probably someone who's been reading his updates every week and thinking that "he'll have no trouble getting adopted."  Truth is, he's waiting.  Waiting just for you!  So, take a look at his journal entries and look at the good and the "that's what makes Steven special" and decide if today is the day...for both of you!!

Week 7
Steven reached a milestone this week.  He answered to his name...OUTSIDE!!!  This may seem like a small feat, but anyone who knows Steven knows that birds are the utmost priority in his world and everything else takes a back seat.  But, his handlers have been patiently helping him to strengthen his skills and were rewarded this week when for a moment he chose to listen to them instead of focusing on the birds.  Of course, two minutes later it was back to a rousing game of chase, but what a great step for Steven.  Way to go!

Week 6
Steven had another great week.  Plus, we learned that he has a new skill.  We all know that he is very birdy, but did you know that he's also very weedy?  This week he has taken to stalking what he things are birds.  He stalks them, sneaks up on them and then pounces...on a big pile of weeds!!  He's surprised every time, but boy does he have a good time.  He continues to do well with his classwork and has been an absolute joy to be around.  Everyone adores this boy!

Week 5
Steven has had a fantastic week.  He reached a leash walking milestone when he took his handlers from the cell block all the way to the doggie yard on a loose leash!  This is such a big deal for him and he definitely deserves a gold star for effort!  He is doing very well in his crate and doesn't even bark when the other pups get excited.  He had to two outings this week and was an absolute gentleman at both.  He was the star at his Meet & Greet where he spent the whole day with his rescue friends meeting new people and new dogs.  He did great with the three dogs that were also at his booth.  Plus, he paid absolutely no attention to some of the dogs who were less than polite to him.  What a sweet boy.  He's become so comfortable during his stay at the prison and he's definitely ready to begin a new life with a family of his own.  Paws crossed...

Week 4
Steven has had another fun week.  He loves to play with his dog friends, until a bird flies by and then all bets are off.  This week his homework includes lots of practice with keeping all four paws on the ground.  Steven loves to meet new people and gets so excited that he often forgets his manners.  So, he and his handlers will be practicing that skill with everyone they can find this week.  Good luck, Steven!!

Week 3
Steven has done so well with his indoor training that his handlers decided that this was the week to transition all of the skills to the great outdoors.  They started with leash manners and moved onto recalls when things started going well.  At first, Steven was reluctant to come when called since there are always so many birds to see and bugs to chase.  But, with some practice, he was really starting to get the hang of it by the end of the week.  He loves his toy duck and has taken to making it "quack" by using his feet.  What a funny, funny boy!

Week 2
Steven had a fabulous week!  He discovered the many of joys of the squeakie toy and, as always, played with his favorite duck toy.  He very nearly got to play with some REAL duck toys this week when two of them dropped into the doggie yard while he was out to play.  He crouched down as low as he could and did a sort of army crawl trying to sneak up on them.  They made it out safely, but Steven had a blast trying to catch them.  His training went extremely well this week.  He's slowly learning his leash manners, but everything else is coming very easy to him.  He's very smart and loves to learn new things which makes him so much fun to train.  He's become a fast favorite of everyone on the block.  Good job Steven!!

Week 1
Steven had so much fun in his first week he could hardly contain himself.  For the first two days, he just ran and ran and ran, stopped to play for a bit and then ran some more.  Since then, he has made several new friends including Bella, Hanson, Cole and almost Elroy.  They're still trying to figure each other out.  Steven is relaxed and easygoing inside and his handlers are working on transferring his training skills to the great outdoors.  Steven is a bird dog through and through and when he sees a feathered "friend" outside, he becomes deaf to the rest of the world.  But, just yesterday, his handlers were able to successfully walk him on a loose leash all the way to the dog yard.  Way to go, Steven!!

UPDATE
Steven is a fun loving youngster who can't wait to get started in the program.  He's headed to the big house on May 8th to pick up some basic manners and then he'll be ready to go!  He is a beautiful, two and a half year old purebred English Setter who is available for adoption through Above and Beyond English Setter Rescue.  Stay tuned...
