Week 9
Skippy headed for home this week. His new family reports that he is
already settling in nicely and enjoying the finer things in life...a soft
bed, long walks and plenty of playtime and belly rubs. Enjoy your new

Week 8
In anticipation of his adoption, Skippy’s handlers continued to work with
some of the other handlers this week to get this pup used to different
people picking him up, and giving him his sit, give paw and wait commands.
Skippy did just fine! This is his handlers’ last week with Skippy, and they
have a couple of things to tell his adoptive parents. “Skippy loves to sit
at your feet and be shown love. It’s funny watching Skippy run around and
playing with his toy. Don’t let his age fool you, because he has a lot of
energy when he wants to play.” His handlers also wrote that “when Skippy
leaves, we’ll miss him.” We’ll miss your sweet face too, Skippy, but we are
very proud of you and all who helped you find your forever home!

Week 7
“Skippy has come a long way since his first week here.” Although he still
won’t do the elusive “down” command, “we can take him off of his leash and
he will walk beside us and not walk off.” What a step in the right
direction, Skippy! This pup also surprised his handlers one day when he was
in the big doggie yard because he ran around chasing a toy. During his
second week in the program, his handlers reported that Skippy learned that
his crate can be a comfortable place to be. Well, Skippy got a new blanket
this week, and “now he won’t lay on our beds. It’s funny watching him move
the blanket around to make his bed.” We agree with your handlers that you’ve
come a long way, Skippy. Hopefully, someone will appreciate just how far
you’ve come, sweet boy!

Week 6
Skippy’s handlers report that this sweet boy is still doing well with his
sit, stay, watch, touch and paw commands. “He still doesn’t do the down
command. I think that Skippy thinks it’s a punishment for him. He just won’t
lie down.” Maybe this pup won’t do the “lay” command when asked to, but he
certainly has no problem using the skill to get some loving from his
handlers! “Skippy will jump up on you, then flops on your shoe, rubs on it,
then stares you in the face with his paw on your leg. Skippy loves
attention, and if he doesn’t get it, he just lies down and then he’ll beg
for it within a couple of minutes.” This pup needs an adult family to make
his “golden” years his magic years…one where he can feel safe and loved.

Week 5
“Skippy has been learning how to walk with us off-leash, and he’s doing very
well!” His handlers report that this pup knows all of his commands, and that
“he loves to sleep with you. He’ll try to cover himself up with the
blankets.” Skippy also has learned that having his toys taken from him
doesn’t mean that he’s not going to get them back. Yay, Skippy! Of course,
pets are his favorite thing. “He is always looking for someone to give him a
rub. The other day, Skippy rolled on his back and made some funny noises to
try to get our attention so he could get some loving. Skippy has grown in a
lot of ways since he’s been in the program. He’s on his way to a better life
and we’re hoping someone will give him his second chance at life and a good
home.”

Week 4
Skippy’s handlers report that he has been improving with his commands,
except for his downs. Although this pup thinks that pets are the best thing
since sliced dog treats, he’s still hesitant about people putting their
faces near his. Skippy’s handlers are working with him on that with positive
reinforcements. He has come a long way, because if he initiates the contact,
“he really doesn’t mind it when he puts his face to yours, and that’s good
for him. Also, if he really likes you, he will show his belly and he’ll lay
there all day for you.” Skippy is getting along with the other dogs, but he
especially likes playing in the dog runs with his good friend Grant. His
handlers introduced him to a game of hide and seek with his squeaky toys one
day this week. “It was funny watching him trying to find his toys.” Skippy
had a furlough to attend CPAA’s Clinic and Pet Appreciation Day on Saturday,
and he was a very good little ambassador! He was quiet, did well with the
fact that there were so many dogs around, and sat nicely and gave up his paw
for hot dog treats. Skippy even let one of the HOPE volunteers sneak a kiss
onto his forehead! This pup is a doll, and just needs a new “leash” on life.
Would you be willing to give it to him?

Week 3
“It was another good week for Skippy.” He continued to work on his basic
skills, “and he’s doing very well with them.” This pup still hasn’t grasped
the “down” command, so that is something he works on every day. His handlers
report that they are now also able to take Skippy’s toys from him without
issue, and that he has adjusted to being alone in his crate when his cellies
go about their day. Good boy, Skippy! This little boy craves attention. He’s
not shy about letting his handlers know when he wants to be pet. “He loves
having his ears and under his jaw rubbed. He’d sit there forever if you
wouldn’t stop.” Keep up the good work, Skippy!

Week 2
This week, Skippy worked on his basic commands. He will sit, stay and wait
very well, but his down skills are still a work in progress. He’s learning
that his crate can be a “comfortable place to be,” and he’s also learning to
share his toys with his handlers. You’re going to be fine, little boy!
Skippy definitely can charm his handlers. “When he wants you to pet him,
he’ll take his paw and put it on your arm and will not stop until you pet
him. He always is looking for someone to pet him and give him some love.” We
hope that you find someone to love you in their forever home, Skippy.

Week 1
Skippy is already making good progress, even after just one week on the cell
block. He has learned plenty of commands, is comfortable (and quiet)
being left alone in his cell and is even learning the beginnings of sharing
his toys. Skippy isn't protective at all over his food or his bowls.
His toys are a different story so his handlers work with him every day
trading treats for toys. Skippy is starting to get the hang of it and
his handlers are sure that with time and continued practice, he'll learn to
trust in his friends and know for certain that he is always safe.
Skippy loves going out along the cell block to say hello to his human
friends. He has a great time approaching all sorts of people and
letting them pet him and scratch his ears. He's already a very popular
pup.

UPDATE
2-18-11
Skippy is getting started with his training at the big house tomorrow. This
little guy needs a safe place to learn about being part of the pack, sharing
his space and trusting his friends again. It's been a tough road for
him, but between his wonderful foster home and the inmate handlers, we're
sure we can bring him back around so he's ready to enjoy the rest of his
life in a home of his very own. Skippy is
a handsome, nine year old Cocker Spaniel who is available for adoption through
Cocker Spaniel
Adoption Center. Stay tuned
for next week's update.
