ADOPTED!!

Week 5
River took a big step this week.  Playtime in the doggie yard...off leash.  River and Bailey have been playing successfully all week.  There is an occasional growl here and there, but overall there has been a great deal of improvement.  Bailey has been such a good sport and is really helping River see that having other dogs around can be fun!  River met a baby groundhog this week.  He and his handler were watching the babies from a distance, but when one of the babies began to head towards him, River hid behind his handler.  What a little sweetheart!

Week 4
This week, River came bounding down the hall to greet us with lots of kisses!  He looked like an enormous weight had been lifted from his shoulders and he was finally starting to relax a bit.  What an encouraging start!  He worked a lot with Bailey this week and had great success.  They walked together, played side by side in the practice pens and even trained next to each other.  He's still very much afraid of people in uniform so were working on some specialized training exercises to help him work through his fears.  River took some giant steps forward this week and we are all just standing back in amazement at the changes we're seeing take place before our eyes.  Stay tuned...

Week 3
Things are looking up for our boy River.  He had a mentor in Roscoe this week and started to learn that other dogs can bring good experiences...and lots of extra treats!  River and Roscoe took lots of walks together.  Their handlers give a lot of verbal praise and treats rewards when River is relaxed and calm.  He and Roscoe really hit it off.  They even played off leash a few times in the practice pens.  It will take a lot of these sessions, patience and just the passage of time to help River overcome his past.  He spent many months with an aggressive dog and the scars on his heart are quite visible.  But, he is safe now and his handlers have their marching orders.  They continue to take tiny steps toward building his self-confidence and returning him to the sweet, good-natured dog he once was!

Week 2
Well, week two has been a much easier one for River.  He has started to become more comfortable with the entire group of handlers and is enjoying being petted by them.  The handlers are doing a lot of purposeful walking with him to start to rebuild his confidence in a variety of settings.   They walk with him on the block, past officers, around inmates, outside on the path, past other dogs, inside the doggie yard and anywhere else they can think of, always encouraging him to face his fear.  With a dog like River, it would be easier to place him somewhere where he would never have to encounter another dog or stranger, but in our program we truly believe in training through the issues not around them.  It will be a long road for River, but he will be so much happier, healthier and emotionally stable once he graduates.  He is such a sweetheart and you can see in his eyes that there is a lifetime of baggage that he carries with him everywhere he goes.  We hope to lighten his load a bit while he's with us so he can live the rest of his life in peace, safe in the knowledge that he will always be loved.

Week 1
River is such a sweet boy, but it's clear to everyone that he had a very rough time in his previous home.  He and his handlers are taking baby steps every day to build up River's confidence and teach him that his new life starts NOW and will be filled with love, loyalty, patience, safety and trust.  It will take a lot of time and compassion to bring this little boy back around, but he is so worth every minute of it.  He is a beautiful boy with an obvious sweetness about him and we can't wait to see him blossom in this new environment.  Keep your eye on this sweetheart!

NEW UPDATE
River was very brave on his first day of doggie school today.  He was a little nervous at first, but relaxed when he had a chance to meet his new classmates and his new handlers.  Keep an eye on River as he gets started on his new adventure.  River is available for adoption through Farpoint Collie Rescue.
