ramboWeek 20

Rambo’s handlers report that “he had a good week.  He has made a lot of friends, which shows us that, if he got the chance, he would make someone very happy.  He has a large personality, and now instead of constantly craving attention, he only wants it when he wants it.”  Rambo has been in the program for a long time, but he still makes progress each week!  He still has some bumps to get over (like getting along with other dogs), but he’s a sweetheart, whose smiling face would bring smiles to his forever family members in return.  We HOPE you find that family soon, sweet Rambo!

Field Trip Alert (as toldby HOPE Volunteer Cindy): I’m not sure what else we can say about this boy.  Everyone loved him at Strawberry Square.  He sat for everybody, leaned into some.  Gave lots of kisses.  One man gave him a piece of his tastykake.  He asked and I told him just a small piece.  He really liked Rambo and came back to pet him. Rambo was the perfect dog to have there.  So friendly.  I know we got a lot more people stopping by because he was there.  He leaned into me yesterday and it’s like, he is the  most loving dog.  He looks at your with his beautiful brown eyes and you melt.

Week 19

Rambo’s handlers said this week that “he’s maintaining okay.”  This pup continues to shine with his basic commands, but his handlers are introducing some new ones in the mix “to keep him as busy as possible.”   Although Rambo still seems anxious around some of the other dogs in his world, his barking at them is “almost non-existent.”  This pup is ready for a forever family who will love him for who he is.  He has learned to trust humans again, thanks to our handlers.

Field Trip Alert (as toldby HOPE Volunteer Margie): I can't believe that no one has snatched this boy up yet.  We went out yesterday and had a great time.  He's got so much personality and he's so happy - I don't think he stopped smiling the entire time. We went over to the college and Rambo got to run and explore on the 50 ft lead.  We practiced "recalls" and he did pretty well, especially considering all the smells and other distractions.  After a while I'd see him sneak a peek just to make sure I was still with him.  Each time he did I told him what a good boy he is.  Then we switched leashes to his regular lead and practiced loose leash walking all through the campus.  When he pulled at all, I quickly made a turn and went the other way.  Rambo got the hint and really started paying attention to where I was going.  When we got back to the prison, he walked right beside me and just looked as proud as he could be.  Back at the block before we called it a day, we played a nonverbal self control game that Rambo's handlers have been practicing with him.  You hold several treats in one closed hand and let the dog sniff.  As soon as he stops and gives up, you open the hand.  If the dog goes for the treats, you close the hand.  If he just looks at the treats, hand him one using your free hand.  As long as he just looks, the hand stays open and the treats keep coming one by one.  Rambo knows the game and after a couple of sniffs of the closed fist, he sat back and gave me one of his very expressive looks that said it all -"OK, I know this game.  Ignore the treats and the fun begins - but it's SO SLOW.  Can't I just have them all now  -  oh, that's right - SELF CONTROL!"

Weeks 17 & 18

Rambo’s handlers report that “it’s good to see him in good spirits given how long he’s been in here.  When people come to our door, he will sometimes growl at them, but that’s only because they are paying attention to us and not to him.  He has been changing to the point that people are beginning to notice.  We think that he also sees that in himself, and that he is becoming more confident.”  Rambo got a furlough to attend a Meet and Greet event at the West Shore Plaza Pet Valu last weekend.  Although this pup would probably be best in a one-pet household, he loved all of the attention he got from the patrons at the store.  In fact, he kept watching the door to see who was going to come in next to give him a pet.  Rambo has very expressive ears, and you could see his anticipation when someone new came up to him.  He was great with kids, doled out kisses left and right, and had a smile on his face most of the time he was there!  He also enjoyed showing off his repertoire of tricks, and did his sit, paw and crawl commands with ease.  Rambo was a good little ambassador, and his handlers were very pleased with the report that the HOPE volunteer gave them after the event!  Now, he needs a forever family to love his expressive ears as much as we do!

Week 16

Rambo continues to please his handlers with his grasp of the skills they have taught him. He does his sit/stay, pray, down and crawl commands with ease, and he also shakes with both paws!   This pup also is getting better at tolerating his pack mates! One of his handlers reports, however, that “in all honesty, I am perplexed when I see Rambo still waiting for a good home.  When he first arrived here, people didn’t know what to think of him.  But, the personality of this furry individual makes it hard not to love him.   For instance, when Rambo is sleeping on the bed, and my cellie and I are making too much noise for his liking, he will get off it, look at both of us, and go to his crate and lay down.  Then, he lets out the longest drawn out sigh that he can muster, just so we acknowledge that we disturbed him.”  Here’s to a loving family who loves you as much as your handlers do, sweet Rambo!

Week 15

Rambo’s handlers gave him gold stars this week for his ability to be around the other dogs in the program.  “His aggression is now almost nonexistent.  He has been making a lot of progress in this area.”  We’re very proud of you and your handlers, Rambo!  This pup is still a favorite on the block.  “Everyone loves Rambo when he comes out in the day room.”  He still hasn’t grasped the concept that petting only lasts so long.  “When it stops, he barks wondering where all of the attention went.”  You’ve come such a long way, little boy.  Keep up the good work!

Weeks 13 & 14

Rambo’s handlers report that he continues to learn new things each week.  “Sometimes, the tricks come very easy for him to pick up.  He has learned how to pray, crawl on his belly, and has mastered ‘leave it.’  We still try to get him to roll over.   When we give him the command, he looks at us like ‘if you roll over, I will roll over’” Silly boy!  Rambo’s handlers have been taking him out during night block to help him focus on them when there are a lot of distractions.  “The people here love Rambo.  It’s pretty funny when someone is paying him attention, and then stops.  Rambo will nudge their hands with his head, and if that doesn’t work, he’ll bark at them.  He can be demanding when it comes to attention.”  We hope you find a forever family to give you a lot of attention soon, Rambo!

ramboWeeks 11 & 12

Rambo’s handlers focused on teaching him some new skills.  “We introduced him to crawling from a down position.  We tried to get him to roll over, but he was like a fish out of water, so we’ll continue to work with him on this command.  Rambo picked up how to ‘pray’ as if he had known it his whole life, so we gave him four stars for that!” One thing that anyone thinking about adopting this pup should know is that he loves peanut butter!   “When I give him a glob of it, he will put it on the roof of his mouth and he will make the funniest face.”  Here’s to globs of your tasty snack in a one dog forever home, sweet Rambo!

Weeks 9 & 10

Rambo‘s handler are happy to report that he has let Chi Chi and Maggie into his circle of friends!  He still has some issues with Rocky and Jada, but we’ll take one or two dogs at a time, little boy!  One of his handlers says that “I laugh, because Rambo is very into himself and it is so obvious.  We have incorporated a lot of activities into his training.”  His handlers hide treats everywhere around their cell.  “Rambo is so sharp that when he finds one, he searches our entire room like a police K-9.  What is greatest about him, though, is when he is laying in his bed. When we have to get up to go about our day, he will greet us with a slight growl because he’s annoyed that  we disturbed him.”  His handlers say that, although he’s full of himself, “he is very affectionate to those closest to him.”  Rambo enjoyed getting lots of pets at the Mutt Mixer last weekend.  Let’s hope that you find a forever home to give you lots of pets every day, Rambo!

Week 8

Rambo’s handlers report that he likes to learn.  In fact, he got an A+ on his report card for his leave it skills this week, and a B for his sit/stay skills!  This pup also learned how to get to the upper bunk in his cell this week!  His handlers moved a foot locker to the top of Rambo’s crate so he can venture up if he wants to do so.  “At first, he was afraid, but with a little time, and a lot of treats, he found the courage to complete the mission.”  Good boy, Rambo!

Weeks 6 & 7

Rambo’s handlers continued to work with him around a lot of people and the other dogs.  This pup did so well with the latter, that his handlers gave him gold stars for his behavior!  “He also picked up on his leave it command surprisingly fast.”  Rambo has a gate on his cell door so he can’t get out unless his handlers want him to do so.  “I called to him, but I didn’t open the gate for him.  He opened it himself, and when we got back to the cell, he closed it.”  Rambo knows his routine at the prison, and when one of his cellies sleeps in, he stands up on his back legs to get better look at the upper bunk to let him know it’s time to go about his day!  What a character you are Rambo!  Keep being you, sweet pup!

Week 5

Last week, one of Rambo’s handlers mentioned that he really likes the smell of food on his other handler’s clothing. This week, that handler reports that “once he knows I have food (whether on his clothes or in his hand) he will do all of his commands all at once.” Rambo’s handlers reinforced his basic commands this week, especially when he was in the hustle and bustle of prison life to help him focus on the tasks at hand. His handlers also reported this week that this pup is much better at getting along with his pack mates! Keep up the good work, Rambo!

ramboWeek 4

Rambo’s handlers say that he had a very productive week because he is starting “to relax around the other dogs in the program, and he picked up his leave it command very well.” Patience is a virtue, Rambo! Once again, this pup’s antics amused his handlers. One of them works in the kitchen at the prison. His other handler reports that “when my cellie came back from work, Rambo smelled all of the food on his clothing. As he walked around, Rambo followed him and performed every trick in his arsenal, thinking that he had the mother load of treats on him.” Sadly for Rambo, that wasn’t true, but his handlers are pleased with his progress this week, and so are we, sweet boy!

Week 3

His handlers report that Rambo had a good week! Not only is he doing very well with his all of his basic commands, “he’s starting to open up and reveal that he is actually quite a character. He patiently followed Ike while he marked his territory this week. As soon as he did, Rambo went to the exact location and made his mark on top of it!” This pup also had his first encounter with the maintenance men from the prison when they came to fix his cellies’ cable connection. “When they left, he came in and checked on his food bowls and, most importantly, his rawhide chew toys. To his relief, they were just like he left them.” Keep showing that cute personality, Rambo!

Week 2

“Rambo is entering his second week in the program, and he is adapting fairly well. He is intelligent and sharp with most of his commands.” In fact, his handlers gave Rambo gold stars for his ability to listen to them! Now, this pup needs to get along with all of the members of his pack. “Some of them, he’s okay with, but others are the exact opposite.” Rambo can be like a spoiled child sometimes by showing his discontent when he doesn’t get his way, but his handlers report that “he is progressing with these problems as time passes.” What surprised Rambo’s cellies the most is that he doesn’t like toys. They say, however, that “when he got a rawhide bone, he was in his own world, chewing on it for hours.” Keep listening to your handlers, and we know that someone will love you for who you are, Rambo!

Week 1

Rambo quickly adjusted to life in the big house. He already knows his sit, stay, shake, down and speak commands. For the most part, he is also doing well on a leash. He sometimes shows some minor pulling, but his handlers say that it’s easily corrected. “Rambo is very attentive and keeps eye contact with us. He listens very well, and lights up when he sees treats.” He also “does great when he meets new people and will sit for them when they ask him to do so.” Rambo is still learning what it’s like to be a member of his pack, but “he doesn’t seem to mind Ike, so we put them in two runs next to each other.” His tolerance for the other dogs in the program is also improving! This pup found out in no time at all that “the bunk is much more comfortable than his dog bed. Rambo is definitely a loving dog who enjoys being close to people.” We’re proud of you little boy!
