FINALLY ADOPTED!!!

ramboWeek 58

“Rambo is awaiting his adopter-in-shining-armor to take him away.  He will miss the HOPE program (we think he was one of the founders, but we’ll never tell), but he’s decided it’s time to move on.”  Rambo‘s Dad had a soft doggie bed and plenty of toys and treats to welcome this sweet boy into his forever home!  Your absence will be felt by a lot of people, but we are so happy for you, Rambo!  You are finally freed!

Week 57

Rambo worked on his patience skills this week by doing his wait, down/stay, sit/stay and watch me commands.  “Rambo is so smart.  He tends to do a ‘bouncing’ down when a treat is present, so we are making sure he stays for at least 5 seconds before rewarding him for being patient.”  Rambo is also doing well with socializing with the other dogs.  “He is tolerating Jackie in close proximity, and allowed Browning to sniff him.  He also didn’t bark at Angel.”  Good boy!  “Rambo is a really good catch, and is all ready to go to join his loving family.”

Week 56

What can we say about this sweet boy that hasn’t been said before?  His handlers were as happy about his chance for a new home as we all were.  Since that wasn’t in the cards for Rambo this time, his handlers continued to work on his socialization with the other dogs and basic skills this week.  “Really, Rambo is super smart and remembers all of his commands.  If everything is reinforced properly (only saying the command one time, and giving him praise each time he’s successful, i.e. ‘Good Around!’), he won’t forget anything.  He’ll make a wonderful addition to any family!”  We couldn’t agree with your handlers more, Rambo!   Don’t give up HOPE!

Week 55

We thought we would be writing to you this week about Rambo's adoption and how much we would miss him as he headed home. He was a hair's breath away from finally having the somfort, safety and happiness of a true forever home. But, in the ned it was not to be. Although he did nothing wrong, the potential adopters decided to adopt one dog rather than two and since Rambo was the second of the two to head home, he was left behind to wait some more. But, he hasn't let it get him down. He's still the rockstar of the cell block and everyone adores him. He doesn't long for attention or affection because all he needs to do is poke his head out of his cell and one of his many friends will offer a scratch behind the ears or a tummy rub. He will certainly miss his good friend Harley, but he still has Kelsey to play with and keep him company. We keep trying and will keep on trying until someone sees the fabulous dog who has been waiting and waiting and waiting. We know you're out there. Please come find your boy!

Week 54

Rambo worked mostly on his reinforcement activities this week by continuing to go over his basic commands and get some exercise time in the dog runs and yard.  As you have read, there is a Free Rambo campaign on our website.  Those of you who have interest in him, and wonder about his dog aggression should have seen him at the Hope Dog Reunion this past Sunday!  So many dogs, so little reaction from Rambo!  His tail was wagging and he had a smile on his face the whole time!  He can be a little jealous if someone he favors shows attention to other dogs.  He barks a bit, but it’s only to let them know that he’s still there and would like some pets too.  All of the handlers, prison staff and HOPE volunteers are looking forward to the day when Inmate #AA7237 receives his final parole to his forever family! Rambo has overcome so much, and is a sweet boy who so deserves to know that he is finally home.

Week 53

“Ram-Bizzle,” as his handler affectionately calls him, was introduced to a new command this week “for some mental stimulation.  We have added ‘get it’ to which he will grasp a particular toy in his mouth.  He does not generalize too well with this command yet as he will only do it with one particular toy at this time.”  You already know all of your commands like the back of your paw, Rambo!  After all, you’ve passed your Canine Good Citizen’s test twice!  We know that in no time, you’ll “get it,” and be ready for the next new lesson that your handler has to offer!  Keep learning and growing, sweet boy!

Week 52

Rambo not only continued to work on all of his basic commands this week, he also focused on his self-control with his “watch me,” “stays” and “wait” skills while remaining in command position for 20-30 seconds.  His handler also continued with this pup’s chaining commands and parallel walking with Jackie.  “Both dogs are becoming less reactive and more comfortable in one another’s presence.”  Maybe someday, you’ll be able to accept Jackie into your circle of friends, as you have with Kelsey and Harley, little boy!  You’re a star, Rambo!  Keep shining bright!

Week 51

Rambo’s new handler reports that “I have been trying to provide him with new and varied stimulation to ease his daily life here.  I have had him out to the big dog yard.  He loves it and becomes playful for short spurts 2-3 minutes at a time.  I am also working on some new commands with him, as well as the old ones.  He does well, as he is very intelligent. We’ve also been doing introduction work with Thunder and Jackie. I’ve noticed, however, that he does not like to work without treats.”  His handler has changed up Rambo’s diet a bit as a result, and he’s adjusting well to it.

Rambo also attended America Rescue Inc.’s Dogs Day at the Park event on Saturday.  This pup came to the HOPE program from this rescue, so he had a lot of admirers during his time there!  He was proud to show off his new self to his old friends, and to enjoy Kelsey’s company during his time at the event.  For the most part, he did well with all of the other dogs he met.  Rambo, being Rambo, sometimes took issue with some of the other pups, but the HOPE volunteers were proud of his behavior around all of the stimulation.  This pup is such a sweetheart.  He thought that sitting on one of the HOPE volunteer’s laps on the way to the event was very much fun.  He can sometimes be a squiggly boy while sitting on your lap, but it’s only because he just loves the attention and feeling of belonging that he receives from those he knows will see him for the sweet dog that he truly is.  Rambo is coming up on his 1st anniversary at the prison.  We HOPE that someday soon, he’ll be able to celebrate his 1st anniversary, and many more, in his forever home.

Rambo had another breakthrough with his tendency to be discriminate about his doggy friends this week!  “He was nose-to-nose with Thunder (who just arrived at the prison on Sunday), and there was no barking or growling.  They just checked each other out.” Rambo can still be a bit protective of his space when Thunder comes by his cell, but we’re very proud of you, sweet pup, for considering allowing the new kid on the block to be a part of your selective pack!

Week 49

Rambo went on a field trip to a creek with Harley, and HOPE volunteers Margie and Cindy this week.  His handler reports that “Miss Cindy” told him that his pup would go into the creek, but only as far as his paws touched the bottom of it.  Rambo is still getting used to some of the new pups in the program, but he showed his softer side towards his pack members.  He was out playing with Ruby and Thunder, and he started barking at them because he thought they were fighting with each other (they weren’t it was just play).  Rambo has come such long way from zero tolerance of other dogs to becoming protective and like a mentor to other dogs who are shy and unsure of themselves.  Rambo needs someone who will appreciate him for who he is.  His handler certainly does.  “As I’m writing this report, Rambo is lying beside me on the bed and he keeps lifting his head up under my hand to see what I’m doing and to seek my attention.”  Your handler was writing this journal that will HOPEfully bring you the forever home you so deserve, sweet boy.

Week 47

As Rambo’s handlers and the HOPE volunteers have reported throughout his time in the program, Rambo is a very intelligent dog.  This week, his handler again reinforced the fact that he remembers all of the tricks and commands that he’s been taught, and loves showing them off to anyone who will take the time to watch him do them.  Rambo is one of the sweetest dogs to come through the program.  Yes, he’s choosy about the canines in his world, but as he has proven himself to be able to overcome his adversity by accepting Kelsey, Harley, Elliott and Buddy into his circle of friends.  Would you consider accepting Rambo into your circle of friends?  We HOPE so!

buddiesWeek 46

Rambo did his “sit pretty” command with just hand signals for his handler this week in the privacy of their cell!  As we have reported, this boy loves going on outings!  When he sees a HOPE volunteer come onto the block, he has a wishful look on his face as if saying, “are you taking me out today?”  This past week there were some visitors who accompanied HOPE volunteer Cindy to the weekly training class.  Rambo wasn’t too sure about the visitors, but he loved seeing her!  “He got all excited and stopped barking at the visitors and he sought the attention of Ms. Cindy.”  This pup got his wish for a field trip this past weekend.  He attended the Pet Appreciation event at Tractor Supply Co. in Carlisle on Saturday, and he was a very good boy!   There were several dogs in the next booth, and he only reacted when they reacted (much like he does with Lena and Jackie in the prison).  He was a happy pup, who loved hearing how handsome he is with his charming smile and inquisitive ears.  Rambo also loved the pets he received from the adults who visited the HOPE table, and hearing their praise about his soft fur.  None of us can fathom why no one has taken this sweetheart into their hearts and into their home.  Until someone does, we know that he’ll continue to thrive at CSI-Camp Hill and dream of his next outing and meeting his forever family.

Week 45

Rambo had a big week last week with all of his accomplishments, but he had another positive in his list of “good boy, Rambo” this week!  When his handler took him out for the last scheduled potty break for the night, Rambo saw a cat that was on the other side of the fence.  “He didn’t growl, bark, or make any sudden movements towards the cat.  All he did was wag his tail.  That was a positive sign.”  Yay, Rambo!

Rambo’s handler was pleased with the report on how well he did during his furlough to attend the Pride Fest last week.  He had a great time with his pals, Harley, Elliott and Kelsey, and did well with most of the other dogs who attended the event!  You’ve really come such a long way, little boy!  Rambo has a special way of letting his handler know that he has to go potty.  “He waits for me to awaken, then he’ll come over and sit beside me.  He’ll then lie down on my chest and rest his head on my shoulder.”   Rambo had quite an accomplishment this week!  “He did really well during testing for the AKC’s Canine Good Citizenship Program.  He passed all ten tests.  I was really proud of him.  After eleven months, it’s still a mystery as to why Rambo has not been adopted.  People have no clue as to what they are missing out on with him.”  We know there is a special person or people out there for you somewhere, sweet boy!

Week 43

Week 43 and still no love for Rambo. This is such a mystery to all of us who have fallen in love with him over the last several months. Look at how many weeks he's been with us. It's creeping up on an entire year and that's just not right. Help us find Rambo a home before we reach week 52!

Rambo received a new toy this week - a purple Kong Wubba toy. He loves it. He loves it so much, he has started taking it to bed with him every evening. His handler tucks him in and he says he reminds him of a little kid with his favorite toy. His handler plays with him and all of his toys. Rambo gives them up easily, except for the Wubba. For that one, he just puts his paw on top of it and looks the other way as if to say Game Over. He's adorable with his human-like qualities. Despite his long stay at the jail, Rambo is as sweet as ever. From playing with his Wubba to greeting every sinlge staff member who enters the cell block, Rambo is fantastic. He is a brilliant dog and always willing to learn new things. He is easy to train and always looks to you for guidance and approval. Rambo is playful and gets along well with his well-mannered doggie friends. He loves to spend time with Kelsey, Elliott, Buddy and especially Harley. Those two boys are like a match made in heaven. Rambo conitnues to amaze everyone with his terrific personality and positive outlook. We're doing our best to do right by him, but we - and he - could use a lilttle help from our friends.

Week 42

Rambo has been at the prison for so long, that the inmates have given him his own inmate number. He has been ready to "parole" on good behavior for months now, but can't seem to find anyone willing to offer him a home plan. He is a model "inmate" and a completely reformed "furry felon." Won't you please consider meeting Rambo!

Rambo and Buddy were in the dog run together.  Rambo’s handler pet him on his one side while petting Buddy on his other side.  “Both dogs got along with one another and at one point, were sitting side-by-side seeking my attention.”  Rambo got a new Kong Wubba toy this week that “he loves to play with.  Like his other Wubba toy, he greets me with it when I come back from work, and he takes it with him when he goes on his bathroom breaks.”  We HOPE you can greet your forever family with your favorite toy very soon, Rambo!

Week 41

rambo-rachelRambo went into the prison not being able to tolerate any of the other dogs in his life.  Although he can still be choosy about who will be his canine friend, his handlers have done a wonderful job of bringing him around to accept some of them.  Rambo was able to be nose-to-nose with the newer kids Ruby and Buddy in the dog runs this week, with no problems (although he did get a little jealous when Buddy stood up to get some attention from his handler).  He also did parallel walks with Harley and Ruby.  Ruby wanted to play with Rambo, but he wasn’t in the mood.  He didn’t react to her antics, however!  Good boy!

Rambo got a furlough to attend the event at Freedom Toyota on Saturday.  Overall, he did very well with all of the dogs that were walking by the HOPE table to receive their low-cost vaccines!  There were some moments, but the HOPE volunteers were proud of him!  Rambo had a milestone because he met a new friend at the event. Her name is Rachel, a beagle who was recently adopted from Furry Friends Network (a member of CPAA). Rambo and Rachel were slowly introduced, and after a lot of sniffing on both their parts, he decided that she was a-okay!  In fact, Rambo posed for pictures with her!  Way to go Rambo!  Of course, when his buddies Kelsey and Elliott arrived at the event, this pup was all smiles. At times, it almost seemed like he was their “big brother” because of how they hovered around him.  It was really sweet to see.  Now we need a forever family to appreciate just what a special dog you are, little Rambo!

rambo-rachel2Field Trip Alert (as told by HOPE volunteer Cindy) - You should have seen these three on Saturday.  Margie brought Elliott and Kelsey over around 2:00 and when they saw Rambo, they immediately went up to him and did not want to leave his side.  We all looked like the three stooges because they were walking around each other and their leashes were getting mixed up.  It was so funny!  If one of us took Rambo for a walk, Elliott wanted to follow.  If we took Elliott by himself, he would only go 20 feet or so and wanted to go back.  Elliott would go up to folks for a quick pet, but then he wanted to get back to Kelsey and Rambo. What a fun bunch! Rambo didn't meet his one and only, but he did make a new friend, Rachel. She was adopted recently by a very good friend of HOPE and came out for a visit. She and Rambo hit it off quite well and enjoyed the day together.

Week 40

Rambo was a rock star at class this week. He behaved like a professional obedience superstar and also showed the "new kids" a thing or two about paying attention and doing what is asked of you. Rambo and his handler worked together on a number of new skills this week and it only took him a few minutes to master each and every one of them - except for "the bow." He has spent far too much timing mastering the sit and down to throw it into reverse, but we're sure he'll have that one by next week's class.

Rambo and his handler were a sight to see during the chaining exercise. Each of the teams started with one skill and then gradually linked another skill and then another until the list was seven skills long. For Rambo, this was a breeze. He didn't even seem to notice that it was getting more difficult. Instead, he responded to his handler with precision and speed for each cue and hand signal. He also excelled at the "place" game. During this game, Rambo has to do a sit and down on his blanket. Trouble is, his handler keeps moving his blanket to a different place. Trouble for some maybe, but not for Rambo. No matter where his handler moved the blanket, Rambo udnerstood that the command was still the same and he responded beautifully! This boy is a gem and is more than ready to show you when you adopt him. It's time folks - somebody snatch this boy up already before he's forced to become the prison mascot.

Rambo now does some of his skills, such as sit, stay and down with non-verbal commands!  He’s also getting to know the new dogs in his life.  “He and Ruby are starting to tolerate each other.”  As for Lena and Buddy, their handlers are taking the introductions slowly, and we’re confident with their patient guidance, these kids will become tolerant of each other as well.  As you can see from his latest YouTube video, this boy is a love bug, who loves the ladies in his life and a good romp in the yard. We so HOPE someone will see you for the sweet pup you are, Rambo, and embrace you into their home very soon!

Week 38

Rambo’s handler reports that, not only does he continue to have a fascination of the groundhogs and bunnies in the yard, this pup also likes to sit and watch people as they walk through the block.  Rambo was certainly eager to meet people at the Grand Opening of PetValu in Etters this past Saturday!   He was a very good boy while accepting their pets!  Admittedly, he did have some issues with some of the smaller dogs that he met, but he did his handler proud by his acceptance of most of the dogs who attended the event!  This boy so needs a home, and he’s more than ready for the right family.  Who could resist those expressive ears and sweet smile?  If you can’t, please consider giving this boy a place to call his own.

Week 37

Where is the love for Rambo? Thirty-seven weeks and still waiting. This boy has received gold stars for good behavior, high marks for obedience, a round of applause for congeniality and rave reviews from everyone who has ever met him. And still he waits. Rambo is the longest serving, furry felon ever to pass through the HOPE Program, but he continues to thrive at the jail and continues to make progress with each passing week. But, really...nine months!!!!! What more does this boy have to do to get "paroled?" He has learned to get along with most of the dogs in his pack. He has learned dozens of fun and useful tricks. He has learned proper greetings with both humans and dogs. He loves everyone and is as happy as can be. If ever a dog needed a lucky brea, this is the one. So, here's our challenge to those of you who read these journals faithfully every week, as well as tose just stopping by for the first time. If Rambo looks like the perfect dog for you, please apply. If not, please share his story with everyone you know. There's always someone who has a friend who knows someone who's boss's second cousin is looking for a dog. And, then would never know about our fabulous boy Rambo unless you send him along. It only take s a few minutes and you would be offering him a second chance that he so very much deserves. Thanks so much for the help!

Week 36

Rambo wasn’t too sure about Ruby when she first arrived at the prison. His handler reports that “when he sees her, he gets a little anxious and watches where she goes.  Before we get too close to the area where Ruby is, I tell Rambo to ‘be nice’ and ‘no barking.’  We can then walk by her when she’s in the dog run.”  As for the other dogs in the program, his handler reports that “it is a good feeling seeing Rambo get along with Kelsey, Harley, Elliot and Checkers.”  This pup continues to love the nature in the dog yard.  He saw a groundhog go into a hole one morning, and later in the day, he put his head in the hole trying to see where it was.  He also had a chance to chase a rabbit, but Rambo was too busy sniffing around the yard and didn’t see it.  We’re so happy you  have doggy friends in your life now, sweet boy!

Rambo, Kelsey, Harley and Elliott were all out in the main dog yard together one day this week, and they all got along with one another.  “All four dogs were sitting abreast in a sit/say and recall all at the same time.”  Once the play began, Elliott ran over Rambo while chasing a ball.  Another day, this pup had some time in the yard with Checkers, and they also got along with one another.  “Checkers wanted to play with Rambo, but Rambo did not want to play.”  At least you’re getting along with your pack mates now, and we’re very proud of your handlers for making that happen!  Good boy, Rambo!

Rambo added rabbits into his love of nature this week.  “He became excited and barked while chasing after it.”  This pup also continued his training by doing his touch command for a treat.  As his handlers have reported over the weeks, Rambo is a very loving dog.  “He will sit beside you, lean in towards you and lay his head on your shoulder.”  We HOPE you find that forever shoulder to lay your head on, Rambo!

Rambo had a play date with Harley this week.  Harley’s handler had them on his bunk, one dog on either side of him, and all went well!   Kelsey also decided that Rambo would be a fun playmate this week, but he didn’t think the same of her.  She tried everything she could to engage this pup in play (including play bows), but Rambo wasn’t in the mood to have fun in the sun with her.

Rambo was the HOPE ambassador at the Armed Forces Day event on City Island this past weekend, and for the most part, he did quite well!  He had a couple of “I don’t like that dog walking so close to me” moments, but he had no issues with the Helping Hounds service dogs who attended the event!  There were so many new sights and sounds (he did great when the little train came by), for this pup to absorb.  Rambo also tested the waters in the doggie pool that was set up.  This boy loves his treats! It was a long day for him, but after a quick nap, he was good to go! Keep smiling, and showing your cute personality, Rambo!

Week 32

Rambo’s handler says that not only does he love groundhogs, he’s added chasing birds into his love of nature.  One act of nature that this pup doesn’t like is thunder storms.  “On 05-03-12 one passed through and he was very scared.  He paced the floor, and paced the cell looking for somewhere to hide.”

Rambo attended the adoption event at Benny’s Pet Depot this past weekend, and he was a little trooper!  His handler would have been proud to see how calm he was around all of the other dogs at the event!  Rambo is just the cutest pup!  He once again charmed people with his expressive ears and his winning smile.  For anyone thinking about adopting him, Rambo loves hot dogs and will lean into you for a Pupperoni treat!    We love you, sweet pup.  HOPEfully soon, you’ll find your forever home!

Week 31

His handler reports that Rambo loves nature.  “He is aware that there are two different locations surrounding the block where there are groundhogs.  He likes to run to the holes or pipes to check for them.  Rambo also likes to chase after bumble bees, etc.”

As we learned last week, this pup got some new toys.  Last week, he favored Foxy.  This week, he took a particular liking to his toy hippo.  “Lately, Rambo has been bringing it to me when I get home from work, or he will offer it to me at bedtime.  One day this week when it was time for his late afternoon potty break, he carried the hippo to the front block door then dropped it.  When we came back in the block, he carried the hippo back to the cell.”  You are such as sweetheart little boy.  We HOPE that someone appreciates your personality as much as your handler and we do, Rambo!

Week 30

Rambo is a little unsure about all of the new dogs in his world, but his handler is using some training tools to make him feel at ease around them.  This pup has come a very long way with his introduction to new pack mates in his space during his time at the prison, and we’re very proud of his handlers for making that happen.

Rambo got some new Kong toys this week.  “He likes the hippo, but he especially loves to play with the red fox.  When I have the red fox out of sight, and I ask him if he wants Foxy, he will get excited and bark.  One day, an inmate that Rambo likes came to visit us in the cell.  I instructed Rambo to get Foxy, and he went to the bed, retrieved his toy, and took it to our visitor to play with.”

Rambo is also fascinated with the groundhogs in the yard.  He spotted one and tried to chase after it.  Later in the afternoon, he stood on his hind legs looking for it.  You’re a charmer, little boy!

Week 29

“Rambo has a distinct personality that makes him a joy to be with.” His handler reports that this pooch continues to excel with his commands.  Rambo also loves his rawhide chew toys, tennis and tuff balls, and squeaky toys (although he likes to take the squeak out of them).   This pup is so loving, and his handlers, the inmates on the block, and all of us in the HOPE Program are quite frankly, bemused why he hasn’t found his forever home.  To know Rambo is to love him, and he’ll love you in return.

Weeks 27 & 28

Rambo showed just what a good student and loving pup he is the last couple of weeks.  His handlers continued to use new techniques and exercises to progress further in his training.  “He listens very well to commands, and at times almost acts like he’s human.  He is very intelligent.”   Rambo got a new handler this week, and he adjusted “right away” to his new cell and his new person.  This pup “loves attention.  He gets as close as he can to you when you pet him.  He will also lie down on you when you’re lying down.  Rambo is very popular with the inmates, and he knows it.  Someone will get to know Rambo and see what we see.  Then, maybe he can get the home he deserves.”

Week 26

“Rambo continues to progress well.”  In fact, this pup is a sponge when it comes to learning new things.  This week, his handlers worked on his responding to non-verbal commands from a distance.  One of them reported that “I am always surprised at how intelligent Rambo is.  I really hope he finds a home soon.”  Rambo was a very good boy at Pet Valu in Lemoyne on Sunday.  He had smiles and kisses for all of the people who came to visit him!  His handlers will be very proud at how well he did when other dogs came into the store!  Near the end of the event, one of the employees gave Rambo a treat with doggie-friendly icing on it.  This pup gently held it between his front paws and munched away!  It was a sweet moment for this sweet boy!

Remember, Rambo is now cleareds for life on the outside with other canine buddies. Rambo has learned to play nicely nad respectfully with laid back, respectful dogs. He has really come around with regard to other pups and we're excited for the new options he has for all of his hard work!

Week 25

This pup had another good week.  “Rambo displays more and more talent, and patience as time goes by. I am just blown away that Rambo still has not been adopted.  Hopefully, soon he will find a good home.” We couldn’t agree with your handlers, or the volunteers who see you for who you really are Rambo!  Here’s to your forever family, sweet boy!

Rambo reached a huge milestone this week. He played off-leash with Cam, Joey and Checkers!! Rambo has really taken his training to heart and developed a newfound sense of respect for his fellow packmates. It was wonderful to see him with canine buddies. He now has the potential to go to a home with another dog because of the dedication and hard work that he and his handlers have put in over the last six months. He would do best with an easy going dog who will not challenge him on leadership issues. We are so incredibly proud of this boy. He has made tremendous progress in a number of areas, but this is the best one for sure.

Week 24

Rambo’s handlers say that although he can still be distracted, and has some issues with the Corrections Officers in his life, he is learning to be a member of his pack!  It’s slow, steady progress, but progress nonetheless!  This pup still would be better in a one-dog home, but he’s been able to be with Cam off-leash in the same dog run, “and they were very well together.  Rocky [through no fault of his own] is still capable of pushing his buttons from time to time, but all in all we’re proud of Rambo.  He has come a very long way.”  Indeed you have, sweet boy, and we’re as proud of you as your handers are, Rambo.

His handlers report that “Rambo had a great week.  He had an outing with HOPE volunteer, Margie, and she said that he was very good with her.  They went to a campus, and there was a crowd of girls there, and they loved him.”  Rambo absorbs his handlers’ commands like a sponge.  He also absorbs the love he gets from the people he meets on outings…as long as they aren’t dogs.  This pup is definitely a winner for the right home.  He’s cute, he loves being the center of attention, and he’s just a doll!

Week 22

“Rambo is hanging in there.  He gets a lot of company these days.  Once people got to see his personality, they love coming to visit.”  We thank our handlers for making this happen!  Last week, Rambo’s handlers reported that he does very well alone in the cell.  One of them said this week that “most times when I come back from work, he is on the bed asleep.  He doesn’t even hear me come in.  What’s crazy about him, though, is he does not like to sleep on the bed at night.  He actually loves his dog bed.”  Here’s to a forever home where you can have your own doggie bed and be your cute self, little Rambo!

Week 21

Rambo’s handlers say that his personality is almost like a human’s at times.  We all know what it’s like to pick and choose who we want to associate with, and this pup has taken on that trait at the prison. “He is extremely loyal to his handlers,” but he prefers certain people on the block over others.  “If he likes them, they get acknowledged. If not, he ignores them as if they were invisible.”   One of his handlers “thinks that it’s good for a dog to like attention, but not have to be attended to all of the time, and Rambo is absolutely content with being alone.  We can leave him out of his crate for as long as needed.   When we return, there isn’t a single item overturned or eaten.”  Your handlers have done such a good job with your training, Rambo.  We can see it when you go on field trips with the volunteers and how much you love the attention you get on the “outside.”  Now, we just need someone to appreciate the dog that you were, and the sweet dog you’ve become little boy!

ramboWeek 20

Rambo’s handlers report that “he had a good week.  He has made a lot of friends, which shows us that, if he got the chance, he would make someone very happy.  He has a large personality, and now instead of constantly craving attention, he only wants it when he wants it.”  Rambo has been in the program for a long time, but he still makes progress each week!  He still has some bumps to get over (like getting along with other dogs), but he’s a sweetheart, whose smiling face would bring smiles to his forever family members in return.  We HOPE you find that family soon, sweet Rambo!

Field Trip Alert (as toldby HOPE Volunteer Cindy): I’m not sure what else we can say about this boy.  Everyone loved him at Strawberry Square.  He sat for everybody, leaned into some.  Gave lots of kisses.  One man gave him a piece of his tastykake.  He asked and I told him just a small piece.  He really liked Rambo and came back to pet him. Rambo was the perfect dog to have there.  So friendly.  I know we got a lot more people stopping by because he was there.  He leaned into me yesterday and it’s like, he is the  most loving dog.  He looks at your with his beautiful brown eyes and you melt.

Week 19

Rambo’s handlers said this week that “he’s maintaining okay.”  This pup continues to shine with his basic commands, but his handlers are introducing some new ones in the mix “to keep him as busy as possible.”   Although Rambo still seems anxious around some of the other dogs in his world, his barking at them is “almost non-existent.”  This pup is ready for a forever family who will love him for who he is.  He has learned to trust humans again, thanks to our handlers.

Field Trip Alert (as toldby HOPE Volunteer Margie): I can't believe that no one has snatched this boy up yet.  We went out yesterday and had a great time.  He's got so much personality and he's so happy - I don't think he stopped smiling the entire time. We went over to the college and Rambo got to run and explore on the 50 ft lead.  We practiced "recalls" and he did pretty well, especially considering all the smells and other distractions.  After a while I'd see him sneak a peek just to make sure I was still with him.  Each time he did I told him what a good boy he is.  Then we switched leashes to his regular lead and practiced loose leash walking all through the campus.  When he pulled at all, I quickly made a turn and went the other way.  Rambo got the hint and really started paying attention to where I was going.  When we got back to the prison, he walked right beside me and just looked as proud as he could be.  Back at the block before we called it a day, we played a nonverbal self control game that Rambo's handlers have been practicing with him.  You hold several treats in one closed hand and let the dog sniff.  As soon as he stops and gives up, you open the hand.  If the dog goes for the treats, you close the hand.  If he just looks at the treats, hand him one using your free hand.  As long as he just looks, the hand stays open and the treats keep coming one by one.  Rambo knows the game and after a couple of sniffs of the closed fist, he sat back and gave me one of his very expressive looks that said it all -"OK, I know this game.  Ignore the treats and the fun begins - but it's SO SLOW.  Can't I just have them all now  -  oh, that's right - SELF CONTROL!"

Weeks 17 & 18

Rambo’s handlers report that “it’s good to see him in good spirits given how long he’s been in here.  When people come to our door, he will sometimes growl at them, but that’s only because they are paying attention to us and not to him.  He has been changing to the point that people are beginning to notice.  We think that he also sees that in himself, and that he is becoming more confident.”  Rambo got a furlough to attend a Meet and Greet event at the West Shore Plaza Pet Valu last weekend.  Although this pup would probably be best in a one-pet household, he loved all of the attention he got from the patrons at the store.  In fact, he kept watching the door to see who was going to come in next to give him a pet.  Rambo has very expressive ears, and you could see his anticipation when someone new came up to him.  He was great with kids, doled out kisses left and right, and had a smile on his face most of the time he was there!  He also enjoyed showing off his repertoire of tricks, and did his sit, paw and crawl commands with ease.  Rambo was a good little ambassador, and his handlers were very pleased with the report that the HOPE volunteer gave them after the event!  Now, he needs a forever family to love his expressive ears as much as we do!

Week 16

Rambo continues to please his handlers with his grasp of the skills they have taught him. He does his sit/stay, pray, down and crawl commands with ease, and he also shakes with both paws!   This pup also is getting better at tolerating his pack mates! One of his handlers reports, however, that “in all honesty, I am perplexed when I see Rambo still waiting for a good home.  When he first arrived here, people didn’t know what to think of him.  But, the personality of this furry individual makes it hard not to love him.   For instance, when Rambo is sleeping on the bed, and my cellie and I are making too much noise for his liking, he will get off it, look at both of us, and go to his crate and lay down.  Then, he lets out the longest drawn out sigh that he can muster, just so we acknowledge that we disturbed him.”  Here’s to a loving family who loves you as much as your handlers do, sweet Rambo!

Rambo’s handlers gave him gold stars this week for his ability to be around the other dogs in the program.  “His aggression is now almost nonexistent.  He has been making a lot of progress in this area.”  We’re very proud of you and your handlers, Rambo!  This pup is still a favorite on the block.  “Everyone loves Rambo when he comes out in the day room.”  He still hasn’t grasped the concept that petting only lasts so long.  “When it stops, he barks wondering where all of the attention went.”  You’ve come such a long way, little boy.  Keep up the good work!

Rambo’s handlers report that he continues to learn new things each week.  “Sometimes, the tricks come very easy for him to pick up.  He has learned how to pray, crawl on his belly, and has mastered ‘leave it.’  We still try to get him to roll over.   When we give him the command, he looks at us like ‘if you roll over, I will roll over’” Silly boy!  Rambo’s handlers have been taking him out during night block to help him focus on them when there are a lot of distractions.  “The people here love Rambo.  It’s pretty funny when someone is paying him attention, and then stops.  Rambo will nudge their hands with his head, and if that doesn’t work, he’ll bark at them.  He can be demanding when it comes to attention.”  We hope you find a forever family to give you a lot of attention soon, Rambo!

Rambo‘s handler are happy to report that he has let Chi Chi and Maggie into his circle of friends!  He still has some issues with Rocky and Jada, but we’ll take one or two dogs at a time, little boy!  One of his handlers says that “I laugh, because Rambo is very into himself and it is so obvious.  We have incorporated a lot of activities into his training.”  His handlers hide treats everywhere around their cell.  “Rambo is so sharp that when he finds one, he searches our entire room like a police K-9.  What is greatest about him, though, is when he is laying in his bed. When we have to get up to go about our day, he will greet us with a slight growl because he’s annoyed that  we disturbed him.”  His handlers say that, although he’s full of himself, “he is very affectionate to those closest to him.”  Rambo enjoyed getting lots of pets at the Mutt Mixer last weekend.  Let’s hope that you find a forever home to give you lots of pets every day, Rambo!

Weeks 6 & 7

Rambo’s handlers continued to work with him around a lot of people and the other dogs.  This pup did so well with the latter, that his handlers gave him gold stars for his behavior!  “He also picked up on his leave it command surprisingly fast.”  Rambo has a gate on his cell door so he can’t get out unless his handlers want him to do so.  “I called to him, but I didn’t open the gate for him.  He opened it himself, and when we got back to the cell, he closed it.”  Rambo knows his routine at the prison, and when one of his cellies sleeps in, he stands up on his back legs to get better look at the upper bunk to let him know it’s time to go about his day!  What a character you are Rambo!  Keep being you, sweet pup!

Last week, one of Rambo’s handlers mentioned that he really likes the smell of food on his other handler’s clothing. This week, that handler reports that “once he knows I have food (whether on his clothes or in his hand) he will do all of his commands all at once.” Rambo’s handlers reinforced his basic commands this week, especially when he was in the hustle and bustle of prison life to help him focus on the tasks at hand. His handlers also reported this week that this pup is much better at getting along with his pack mates! Keep up the good work, Rambo!

ramboWeek 4

Rambo’s handlers say that he had a very productive week because he is starting “to relax around the other dogs in the program, and he picked up his leave it command very well.” Patience is a virtue, Rambo! Once again, this pup’s antics amused his handlers. One of them works in the kitchen at the prison. His other handler reports that “when my cellie came back from work, Rambo smelled all of the food on his clothing. As he walked around, Rambo followed him and performed every trick in his arsenal, thinking that he had the mother load of treats on him.” Sadly for Rambo, that wasn’t true, but his handlers are pleased with his progress this week, and so are we, sweet boy!

Week 3

His handlers report that Rambo had a good week! Not only is he doing very well with his all of his basic commands, “he’s starting to open up and reveal that he is actually quite a character. He patiently followed Ike while he marked his territory this week. As soon as he did, Rambo went to the exact location and made his mark on top of it!” This pup also had his first encounter with the maintenance men from the prison when they came to fix his cellies’ cable connection. “When they left, he came in and checked on his food bowls and, most importantly, his rawhide chew toys. To his relief, they were just like he left them.” Keep showing that cute personality, Rambo!

Week 2

“Rambo is entering his second week in the program, and he is adapting fairly well. He is intelligent and sharp with most of his commands.” In fact, his handlers gave Rambo gold stars for his ability to listen to them! Now, this pup needs to get along with all of the members of his pack. “Some of them, he’s okay with, but others are the exact opposite.” Rambo can be like a spoiled child sometimes by showing his discontent when he doesn’t get his way, but his handlers report that “he is progressing with these problems as time passes.” What surprised Rambo’s cellies the most is that he doesn’t like toys. They say, however, that “when he got a rawhide bone, he was in his own world, chewing on it for hours.” Keep listening to your handlers, and we know that someone will love you for who you are, Rambo!

Week 1

Rambo quickly adjusted to life in the big house. He already knows his sit, stay, shake, down and speak commands. For the most part, he is also doing well on a leash. He sometimes shows some minor pulling, but his handlers say that it’s easily corrected. “Rambo is very attentive and keeps eye contact with us. He listens very well, and lights up when he sees treats.” He also “does great when he meets new people and will sit for them when they ask him to do so.” Rambo is still learning what it’s like to be a member of his pack, but “he doesn’t seem to mind Ike, so we put them in two runs next to each other.” His tolerance for the other dogs in the program is also improving! This pup found out in no time at all that “the bunk is much more comfortable than his dog bed. Rambo is definitely a loving dog who enjoys being close to people.” We’re proud of you little boy!
