Week 14

Radar went to his forever home over the weekend, and we couldn't be happier for him! He was a true diamond in the rough when he first entered the prison, but with the love, patience and care that his handlers gave him the past few weeks, Radar is ready to sparkle in his new family! We'll miss you sweet boy!

Week 13

Radar's handlers say that he's doing great! They're honing Radar's skills so that he's ready to be loved by a forever family.  One of the HOPE volunteers got to play a game of fetch with him this week.  It seems like a small thing to be able to play fetch with a dog, but not for Radar.  His trust level has grown leaps and bounds in his time at the prison and he was so excited to play the game that no treats were needed to take his favorite ball right out of his mouth to keep the game going!

Radar will need consistency in his life, but his handlers are confident that he'll be a welcome member to any household who will accept him and love him for the dog that he was and the dog that he has grown to be. You have come such a long way in your journey through the program, Radar. We're very proud of you and your handlers, little one!

Weeks 11 & 12

Radar not only continued to work on following his handlers' hand signals on his "arounds," "heel" and "swing" commands, he learned a new trick this week.  It's called the "spin." Radar stands up on his hind legs and turns in a circle! Radar continues to excel at sharing his toys and treasures.  He still has moments of pause and lets out a yip when he hears the guards' jingling keys, but he's getting better with that issue as well. Radar loved running around in the snow with Cocoa and Marty this week. Of course, the snow was almost as tall as he was, so he tended to try to jump over it and find an easier path so he could once again join his playmates! We're so happy that you're realizing just what it's like to be a loved dog, Radar. Keep up the good work!

Week 10

Radar's handlers have put their heart and soul into his training the last few weeks, and he is now a completely different dog than when he first came to the prison. In fact, his progress is beyond what his handlers thought possible. As you have read, Radar went from not being able to have toys or treats, to being a dog who chews on rawhides and brings his favorite ball to his handlers for some playtime! "[We] can't explain in words the excitement, joy and feeling of accomplishment seeing Radar understand and enjoy himself." Radar is also doing great with his commands, but he still needs a little work in some areas. Like Bronko, Radar is on a diet to help regain his boyish figure. His handlers are hoping that they'll soon be able to get Radar out in the yard more for some additional exercise. Radar loves to run and play fetch with his handlers. When the other dogs are out in the yard, however, they put his ball away so that he'll join his canine buddies for some fun. You're a star, Radar!

Week 9

Radar really turned a corner this week and we could not be more proud of him.  Not only is he offering up his bones and toys to his handlers, he's also giving up his most prized treasures to all of the handlers in the program!  His handlers kept his training on the block last week because of the cold weather. He's doing very well with his basic training, but most importantly, Radar is gaining his handlers' trust! Instead of resource guarding his rawhide treat, he now chews it out of his handlers' hands. Everyday, Radar he comes a little further.  He's definitely headed in the right direction now.  His handlers continue to use different skills to help Radar learn that he and his possessions are safe around his people. Keep coming around, little one.  There's a patient family out there just waiting for you!

Week 8

Radar's handlers continued to work on his resource guarding this week. They used a couple of exercises using rawhides and treats to help this pup realize that he's safe and that he doesn't have to guard his possessions anymore. Radar is really coming along with his "gives" as a result! He will put his rawhide treasure in his handlers' hands or drop it on their laps when he hears his "give" command. Thanks to Tess, Radar also now knows that having a pal to play with is a very good thing! You're learning, little one. Keep up the good work!

Week 7

Radar worked hard on his lessons this week. His handlers used some of their yard time to help Radar with his resource guarding issue. Although it's still an on-going process, Radar continues to show improvement! Radar's handlers work with their pup while on the block to do the homework assigned by our professional trainer. Radar worked on his "arounds" and "swings" this week (he does really well with the "swing" exercise). They also worked on "lie down on command." Radar does "great" with this command when he's focused, but sometimes with the hustle and bustle of prison life, he gets distracted. Radar will also do a down from a sit or stand with no treats! This pup loves to work, so when his handlers really focus on his training, it's Radar's "cup of tea." Overall Radar did a great job this week, and he is really coming along.

Week 6

Radar's handlers worked on the tasks this week that the special trainer who visited the prison assigned to help them with this pup's guarding issues. They found that "treasures for treats" still works best for Radar, and although he isn't 100% yet, his resource guarding is subsiding. Radar only "acts up" when they put a toy down and act like they want to take it. If a toy just falls on the floor and they reach for it, he's just fine. His handlers are confident that with more patient training, Radar will be able to get a 100% on his report card. Radar also has a great stay and is doing better with his recalls. We're all proud of your progress, Radar!

Week 4 & 5

Radar has really made a lot of progress in just a few short weeks! He doesn't bark as much when his handlers leave their space, and he's showing great strides with his resource guarding. When he first came to the prison, Radar would become stressed when his handlers tried to get their pup to take something out of their hands. Now, Radar feels very comfortable doing so and his handlers are so very proud of him. Radar also has learned that "treats for treasures" can be fun. Since Radar likes to play fetch a lot, his handlers have been using the game as a learning tool. They throw his toy and when Radar brings it back to them, they take it, treat him, and then return his toy to him, again with great success! Radar also is learning the arts of swing, weave and down from a sit or from a stand position. This little fur-baby is a favorite on the block. Many of his tier mates come to visit him. In fact, some of them say that he's the happiest dog they have ever met. Radar loves to greet his adoring public with a wag of his tail and a smile. His handlers also smile because of Radar's achievements. "He's great!"

Week 3

Radar's handlers continued to work on his resource guarding this week. They found that doing so in the doggie yard helped Radar the most. Radar is doing great with playing fetch! He'll run like a bandit for a ball or toy, then will bring it back and either drop it in his handlers' laps or in front of their feet! If he gets over-stimulated and goes back into guarding mode, his handlers tell Radar to "give" and he will let go of his toy. Radar's handlers have seen a lot of improvement since they first met him, but they know that there is still work to be done. Radar also learned to "shake" this week! It took a few tries, but he caught on to his new task. His handlers say that even with his resource guarding, he's a very loveable dog who loves to learn. You'll be fine, Radar!

Week 2

Radar is a sweetheart and his handlers just adore him.  He is doing well with his basic obedience training and loves to play with his doggie friends out in the yard.  e even invited Bronko over to his cell this week for a visit.  His resources guarding is coming along very slowly, but that's alright by us.  He's making slow and steady progress and that's what matters most.  His homework for this week was an exercise called "Treasures for Treats."  Radar is learning to give up his toys in exchange for something fun.  His handlers report that with lots of repetition, they started to see some good progress.  Radar will be getting some visits from additional training experts to help build up his tolerance and trust levels.  He is such a sweetheart and we know we can help him regain the trust that he once had.

Week 1

Radar's handlers report that their first couple of days with their new fur-baby have been very exciting and like receiving a present because "you never know what's inside."  So, they "opened their present" and found some things about Radar that they just love!  Radar is very loveable and friendly.  He learns easily, never gets bored and training so far is fun for him.  One thing that Radar's handlers didn't love about him was his resource guarding.  So they rolled up their sleeves, got some tips from the other handlers and focused on teaching Radar that "that" behavior is not acceptable.  Radar has made "magnificent progress" in just a few days!  Radar's handlers know that he will benefit from the program and will reach the goals they have mapped out for him.  They are really looking forward to working with him to find his forever family.
