ADOPTED!!!
Week 7
All of us who came in contact with Pumpkin instantly fell in love with her.
As those of you who have been reading her progress journals know, Pumpkin
had an application for adoption before she went into the program. This sweet
little girl went to her forever home on Wednesday, and we couldn't be
happier for her! We'll all miss you Pumpkin (especially your best bud, Herc),
but we know that you will be loved by both your new family and the members
of your new pack!

Week 6
Pumpkin's handler continued to work on her basic commands with and without
treats this week. She also worked on curbing her tendency to jump on her
fellow block mates to give them a lick when greeting them. Needless to
say, Pumpkin is a very affectionate pup! She loved the beautiful weather
that we had this week. Pumpkin and her friend Herc had a grand time
playing and chasing each other in the doggie yard. When she got a little
overheated, Pumpkin stopped for a drink of water and some time in the shade,
then it was back for some fun in the sun! "Pumpkin has the best smile. She
lifts her lips up while wagging her tail intensely!" She can be a feisty
pup, but for the most part, Pumpkin is a calm pooch who loves snuggling with
her handler. Pumpkin is going to her forever home next week! From talking to
her parents at the St. Pitty's Day event, we wouldn't be surprised if there
is a stork in their yard announcing that "It's a girl! Her name is Pumpkin.
55 pounds!" Everyone in the neighborhood, but especially her Mom and Dad,
can't wait for Pumpkin to be paroled! Her handler will miss her, but knows
that "her new family will love her."

Week 5
Pumpkin is continuing her training with a different handler. In just a week,
he confirms that Pumpkin is a "very sweet, smart and a calm girl." She
listens well to his commands, no matter what distractions she encounters at
the prison. Pumpkin worked on her "around" routine this week. "She is a fast
learner!" Pumpkin also does really well in her crate, and respects her
handler's possessions when left alone in their cell. Her handler can't say
enough about her cute personality. Pumpkin gets along with the other dogs,
cuddles with her handler every chance she can, and she has a cute smile that
her handler can't resist. "She raises her lips and goes in for a lick. She
is very affectionate! She will be an awesome dog for her new family!"

Week 4
This week Pumpkin learned that just because her cell door opens, it doesn't
necessarily mean that she's free to go out and explore her world. She
learned that lesson quickly! Miss Pumpkin will wait at the door until her
handler says "okay," and then she happily goes about her day. One of her
favorite things to do is to romp in the doggie yard with her girlfriend Chi
Chi! In fact, when Chi Chi's handler is at work, Pumpkin's handler will take
the two of them out for some fun in the sun. Her handler says that "Pumpkin
is ready to go home. She has really come close to my heart. I'll miss her a
lot when she leaves. You couldn't ask for a better dog than Pumpkin."

Week 3
Pumpkin's sits and stays are "really good!" She continues to excel in her
recall skills...with or without treats! Pumpkin's handler is still working
to make sure that she keeps "four feet on the floor" when greeting people
and she's doing a lot better in that department as well. Pumpkin has been
spending a lot of time in the dayroom and having different people treat her.
She knows that no paws on the ground means no rewards from her tier-mates.
Sometimes, she forgets, but overall, Pumpkin has grasped the concept!
Pumpkin didn't like the rain and windy weather this past weekend. Although,
she was very good about letting her handler know when it was time to go
pottie, she preferred to be indoors. She did very well having quiet time in
her space. When the weather broke, Pumpkin had a great time romping in the
yard with her buddies Chi Chi, Bronko and Hercules!
Pumpkin was a star at the St. Pitty's Day event at Borders in Camp Hill!
This dainty girl leaned into the customers who wanted to give her loving!
She's very sweet and it looks like she will be going to her forvever home
soon! Her prospective parents were at the event, and they can't wait to get
her home and pamper her with all of the loving that she so deserves! They
told the HOPE volunteers that their neighbors are looking forward to her
arrival at their home as well. Even though they are eager to have
Pumpkin as they're very own, she will spend a few more weeks at the prison
working to hone her skills. One of the skills she definitely knows is
walking on-leash! The HOPE volunteer who took her back to the prison from
Borders said that Pumpkin is one of the best dogs she's had the pleasure to
walk during her time with working in the program! We're very happy for you,
sweet girl!

Week 2
Pumpkin is already a star. Her recalls are so good that it makes the
rest of training a snap. Her handler reports that she is doing well
with most of the other dogs, but if she starts to get too pushy all he has
to do is say hr name and she'll stop what she's doing and come running.
She enjoyed her romp in the dog yard with Bronko and Chi Chi and she's
almost added Hercules to her list of friends. They all had a lot of
fun running together in the yard and then stopping for some training
sessions.
This week, her main goal is to learn to greet new and old friends with all
four paws on the ground. She is such a friendly dog and she loves to
visit with people. So, her handler is using that as a reward for her
good behavior. When she keeps all four paws on the ground, she'll
receive the pets and snuggles that she longs for from the staff and other
inmates. She's already making good progress in that area and her
handler hopes that by the end of the week, she'll be solid with that skill.
Pumpkin's handler says that she is wonderful in the crate and also ignores
him while he's eating...unless he calls her over for a special treat.
He says that when Pumpkin gets happy, she starts wagging her tail really
fast and she looks like she's smiling. He says Pumpkin's "smile"
brings a smile to everyone around her. He also reports that Pumpkin
not only does incredibly well with him, but will listen to all of the other
handlers as well. What a tremendous amount of progress for this sweet
girl. Way to go, Pumpkin!!

Week 1
Pumpkin did very well during her first week at the prison! Her handler
reports that during her first day, she met so many new faces and sounds,
that she was going around in circles. So, Pumpkin got introduced to
the big doggie yard and was able to burn off some of her energy.
Immediately, her handler noticed that Pumpkin's recall is very good. She
kept looking at him to see where he was and checking in with him from time
to time. In her first week at the prison, Pumpkin has already learned how to
"sit," "down," "stay," "shake," and "roll-over"! What a student! Her leash
walking still needs some improvement, but she understands that if she walks
with her handler and listens to the "with me" command, that she'll be able
to get out to the play yard a lot faster. Her "waits" also need some
work at this point, but her handler knows that she'll get it. Pumpkin is
food-motivated, yet she'll do commands without treats as well. She's also
very good at letting her handler know when it's potty time, has no issues
with her crate and she did very well at getting her first bath! Pumpkin's
handler noticed that she's sensitive to tones of voice. In fact, she'll put
her head down and put her tail in between her legs at times. He tells
Pumpkin what a good girl she is and it seems to be helping whatever caused
that behavior in her past. Overall, Pumpkin's handler says that she's doing
very well after week one of her training, and he thinks that whoever adopts
her once she has completed the program will be very happy. You're doing
great, Pumpkin!

UPDATE - 2/26/10
Pumpkin headed off to the big house today to begin her training. In
just a few minutes, she already had quite a large fan base and made friends
with Radar. She is a sweet, two and a half year old American
Staffordshire Terrier and just needs a crash course in obedience and doggie
manners. Pumpkin is available for
adoption through
Animal Rescue
Incorporated.
