ADOPTED!!!

UPDATE 5/5/07
Phoenix finally found the home of his dreams and we wish him, his new family and his new doggie siblings the very best of luck together!!

Week 13
When Phoenix finally gets adopted, he may go down in HOPE Dog history as the most missed dog ever!!  Everyone from staff to officers to inmates adores this dog.  They all seem to have a little bit of ownership and care for him as if he was their very own.  He's a very lucky boy who went from being nearly invisible to being one of the most adored HOPE Dogs in all of our time at the prison.  His morning sniffing antics in the doggie yard bring endless giggles to the kitchen staff, he's a welcome assistant in the unit manager's office on a daily basis and he truly seems to bring a little bit of joy everywhere he goes.  He's a one-of a kind and although we'll all be happy to see him find his home, there will be large shoes to fill when he leaves.  Fingers crossed...

Week 12
This could be Phoenix' lucky week.  He has finally received the kind of interest we all thought he would have had from the very beginning.  Sometimes it's just a matter of time until the perfect person comes along and then the rest is history.  Keep your fingers crossed for Phoenix and hope he finds his forever home soon!

Week 11
I'm not sure there is such a thing as a perfect dog, but Phoenix sure comes close.  He spent the day at the dog show on Saturday and just wowed all of the people who stopped to visit him.  He has become so confident and relaxed since starting the HOPE Program that it's hard to believe he is the same dog who came to us eleven weeks ago completely terrified f everything around him.  He has truly become a favorite at the prison and he will be sorely missed when he finally finds a home of his own.  His handler has taught him so many things including hand signals, how to play fetch, how to be a part of the dog pack and how to score extra treats from the officers.  But, perhaps most evident is how to feel safe in the world.  It's hard to imagine safety, compassion and adoration coming from a maximum security prison, but looking at the dog Phoenix has become...it's unmistakable.  When he first arrived, his handlers gave him the name of Phoenix because they knew in their hearts that he would be a new dog by the time he was ready to leave.  They were so very right.  There's just one piece of the story left to be written...who will be lucky enough to bring Phoenix into their family?

Week 10
For anyone who thinks that having a deaf dog must be tougher than having one who can hear, you really must meet Phoenix.  This boy has surprised us all with how quickly he can adapt to whatever situation he finds himself in.  There are no limits to what this dog can learn and he loves the whole process.  He adores people and has really come to love the company of the other dogs in his "pack."  Amazingly, there has not been a single application for this love of a dog.  None of us can figure out why.  He is truly a gem of a dog and deserves a wonderful home.  We'll keep all of our fingers and paws crossed that he'll find it soon!

Week 9
Phoenix has come such a long way since he first started the program two months ago.  He went from being a dog who was frightened of everything to a confident, sweet-natured boy who loves and trusts the people around him.  He's learned what it's like to be a part of a dog pack and has even start to initiate playtime with his doggie buddies.  He runs past the other dogs with a toy to get their attention and then the chase begins.  He is absolutely adored by staff and inmates alike and has become very near and dear to the hearts of his handlers.   Phoenix' handler passed along this letter to us this week.  He swears that Phoenix wrote it, but that he had to do the typing since Phoenix doesn't know how.  This dog deserves a very special home and has waited so very long.  Is it you?  Click here to read Phoenix' letter...

Week 8
Phoenix had a funny thing happen this week.  He and his handler were out playing in the doggie yard and Phoenix started to run around chasing something.  He wasn't doing his usual routine of sniffing out the entire yard, he was running around in circles.  When his handler saw what was on Phoenix' back, he took it off and showed it to him.  He had been chasing a lightning bug that had landed on his back end.  Phoenix took one look at the bug in his handler's hand and GULP...down it went.  Later, his handler turned off the light to see if Phoenix was glowing, but no such luck!

Week 7
Phoenix is such a gentle soul.  He's become truly comfortable playing with his other doggie friends, but always steps out of the game when they start to wrestle.  He has also started to provide daily entertainment for some of the staff at the prison.  Every morning, Phoenix and his handler head out to the doggie yard for some exercise.  As soon as Phoenix is off the leash he starts running, following his nose in whatever direction it takes him.  He visits every corner of the yard, not looking for anything in particular, just exploring.  It's hard to believe that this special dog hasn't found a home yet.  He is as sweet and loving as any dog we've ever had the pleasure to know and never runs out of snuggles for his people.  He is easy going, likes other dogs (of the more gentle variety), adores people, loves a good walk and just couldn't be nicer.  We keep hoping that the right person is reading about him and has room in their home and heart for this special dog.  He's one in a million!

Week 6
His handlers call it stealth mode.  It's the way that Phoenix walks, low to the ground, very slowly, always watching for a bird that he can chase!  Phoenix would spend all day chasing birds if he could.  He loves to watch them from the doggie yard when he's out with his handlers.  Now that Phoenix has settled into a routine at the prison, his handlers say that he has "grown a spring in his tail!"  They say it never stops wagging whether he's around people or the other dogs.  He is truly a wonderfully sweet, good natured dog who loves to please.  He's perfectly content to lay in your lap, go for a fun walk or watch the birds with you.  As his handler says, "It's always a pleasure coming back from work.  I know that Phoenix misses me.  The only problem is I don't know who misses who the most.  Even when I'm at work, I've always got him with me."  Phoenix has won the hearts of everyone at the jail.  He has blossomed from a terrified dog into one of the sweetest souls you could ever hope to meet.  Now all he needs is a family to call his own.  What do you say?!?!?

Week 5
Phoenix was an absolute angel this week!  He had a great week with his handlers and then had some wonderful new experiences as well.  Phoenix attended his first Meet & Greet on Saturday and charmed everyone he met with his sweet, gentle nature.  He showed off some of his new tricks and then quietly fell asleep in his foster mom's lap.  He met children for the first time and thought they were pretty neat.  He was also invited to a special event with a social group for the hearing impaired.  It didn't take long for everyone there to realize how special this sweetheart of a dog is.  Phoenix is still waiting for his special person to come along.  Someone who will see past his inability to hear and embrace the loving, loyal, snuggly and wonderful dog that he is.  Does he sound like the right dog for you?

Week 4
Phoenix received a brand new toy this week made special just for him.  Phoenix loves birds and once he catches sight of one it can be hard to get his attention back.  So, the trainer brought along a special toy for him this week complete with bird scent.  When the handlers need to bring him back to the land of training, they walk over to him, give him a quick sniff of the toy and they're able to regain his focus and get back to work.  This is a wonderful, positive way to help Phoenix get focused.  He is really coming along with his sign language, adding more and more each week.  Plus, he is gaining more and more confidence with the other dogs.  When Phoenix first arrived, everything was new to him and everything scared him.  In just a few short weeks, he has become far more confident and is learning to trust the people to whom his care has been entrusted.  Phoenix is a wonderful dog who will bring years of joy to the special person who decides to make him part of the family.  Is that you?

Week 3
Phoenix may not be able to hear, but that certainly doesn't affect his ability to see...birds, that is.  He loves to stalk them and chase them and then wait for more.  He's never actually caught one, but he sure does love the game!  Phoenix is really starting to come out of his shell with the other dogs.  He and Reggie have been friends since day one, but he and Fortune have taken a liking to each other this week as well.  All three like to play together outside and Fortune and Phoenix like to play together indoors with their toys in the evening.  His handlers are working hard to help build up his confidence with all of the new things he is experiencing and 'Nix is definitely rising to the challenge.  This is one special boy just waiting for the right person to spend a lifetime with!

Week 2
Phoenix is starting to settle in as he starts his third week in the program.  He is very, very bright and is learning sign language quicker than we expected.  His handlers are using traditional American Sign Language to build a bridge between him and the rest of the hearing world.  Phoenix saw his first snowflakes this week and had a ball running around the doggie yard catching them!  He likes the other dogs, but Reggie is his best buddy!  This boy is a true diamond in the ruff and anyone would be lucky to have him!!  Will you be Phoenix' valentine?

Week 1
Phoenix is quite a lap dog.  He has already learned about six signs including sit, down, stay, come, crate and of course, treat!!  He is not at all in love with his crate, but we're hoping he'll come around.  When he's out and about, he loves to greet everyone!  He is very polite and will lean into you for pets and snuggles.  This week, the handlers are working increasing his comfort level with forward approaches.  This will help build his confidence as we all head into new territory teaching this sweet, sweet boy how to thrive in his silent world.

NEW UPDATE - 1/25/07
Phoenix is a big sweetheart who can't wait to get started in the program.  He is deaf, but that doesn't slow him down in the least and it certainly doesn't affect his sweet nature!!  He is a beautiful, two-year old purebred English Setter who is available for adoption through Above and Beyond English Setter Rescue.  Stay tuned...
