Petey's Christmas wishes have already come true and he's heading home this week!

Weeks 8 & 9
Petey’s handlers report that he spent “some extensive time with Jada.  They both love playing with each other.”  Their handlers break up their play time with training sessions.  “We were able to really work on their long distance stays and recalls out in the dog yard.  Both did great!  It’s fun watching them together and their mannerisms towards one another.  Petey will never be able to catch Jada, so he stops and lies down until she approaches him.  Then he gets her.” This pup got an additional cellie this week, who reports that “Petey has been kind enough to spend his last week training his new handler.  He has been very patient with his new human, and I learned a lot from him.  Both of his handlers are glad to have had the chance to work with Petey, and we’ll miss him when he leaves to go to his new home.”  Petey got to spend some time with his new Dad and extended family members (and romp time with Jada) at the Mutt Mixer last weekend!   At one point, one of the HOPE volunteers looked at him, and thought “he knows he has found his family.”  He looked so relaxed, content and had a big grin on his sweet face.  Enjoy being the loved dog you so deserve to be, Petey!

Week 7
Petey’s handler concentrated on his pup’s “wait” and “watch me” commands this week. He was awarded with great grades on his report card for showing “better focus and his willingness to maintain his attention to me” as a result!  When Petey isn’t going through his drills, he can be found playing with his doggie friends, especially “his best friend, Jada. They love going after each other.” Sometimes the play can get a bit rambunctious, but the sight of cheese calms both of the pups down.  “It will stop them in their tracks.  They sit, stay and lay together.  Petey is a great dog, who really needs a good home.”   No truer words were written.

Weeks 5 & 6
Petey’s handler reports that “he is as comfortable as ever.  Everyone loves him and he knows it.  He roams around the block with his tail wagging and he gets lots of attention.”  This pup is also getting “very good with all of his commands.  He learned how to shake this week!” Petey can still be unfocused when there are distractions around him, so his handler is working with this pup to concentrate on him and not what is going on in his world during his training sessions.  We know that you’ll succeed, sweet boy!  Petey continues to love his play time with the other dogs!  “Jada is his best pal.  They are great together, and listen very well while having their fun.”  This pup also learned a new game this week.  “Petey doesn’t like when I cover my face with my hands.  He will cry or bark, but then he’ll jump on me when I say peek-a-boo!”  You’re doing great, Petey!  We HOPE there is a home for the holidays for you, little one!

Week 4
“It’s been a month since Petey came here, and he continues to get better.” This pup made “significant strides” with his down skills, as well as all of his other commands this week. “Petey continues to be, and will always be a happy, attention-seeking dog who will make a great pet.” As his handlers reported early on, Petey could be a bit stubborn at times. Now, he is eager to listen, and knows that he won’t get what he wants unless he behaves. Petey also loved the snow last weekend! He ran in it, ate it, and just loved being out and about in it. We’re proud of your progress, little boy!

Week 3
It was week three for Petey in the big house, and his handlers report that “he’s coming along very, very well. He continues to show willingness to listen and learn, and we couldn’t be happier. Petey is paying a lot of attention to us and is more focused, which is paying huge dividends in all of his training.” He still needs to do his basic commands consistently, but his handlers know that it will happen. This pup has no issues with any of the other dogs in the program, and has found a new playmate in Jada. In fact, they play so well together, “they wear each other out.” Petey has also “taken a fond liking to our Unit Manager and loves visiting with her in her office. He will lie at the door, facing out, watching contentedly and tilting his head when intrigued at what he sees.” What a report, Petey! Keep up the good work!

Week 2
Petey’s handlers report that week two for him was much better than week one because he’s beginning to accept the structure in his life. He is also developing a bond with his handlers “which helps us tremendously.” Petey’s walking skills are getting better, but he still has to work on his down command. His handlers say that “his eagerness to listen has improved,” so we know you’ll get that down command in no time, Petey! Last week, this pup showed the stubborn side of his personality. This week, he was a loveable and happy dog! “Petey is an attention seeker like no other. He’s very friendly, and is eager to greet everyone. When he meets someone new, he just rolls over and lets them pet him.” We’re looking forward to hearing about week three, sweet boy!

Week 1
Petey’s first week at the prison was one of transition for him and his handlers. It seems that “he resents structure, so he needs to adjust (to this environment).” His handlers took Petey through all of his week-one exercises. They report that although he can perform them all, he showed the stubborn side of his personality, and only did them when he felt like doing so. Of course, his handlers know that they’re still in the honeymoon period with this pup, but Petey’s in good hands. His handlers are committed to take their time to form a special bond with him so that “we can teach him to do his basic commands consistently.” We’re rooting for you, Petey!

UPDATE 10-5-11
Petey headed to the big house today. This fella' just needs the basics in manners and some help in the focus department.  He loves absolutely everyone and is a friend to all dogs.  Petey is an adorable, two year old Bull Dog/Pit Bull mix who is available for adoption through A Tail to Tell.  Stay tuned for next week's update.
