Week 7

Penney is going to live with her new family this weekend! Her handler would like to thank her foster family again for the great job that they did to help him help Penney to be adopted. Penney's handler focused on her recalls and stays this week because he knew that brushing up on these commands would help Penney to be an even better addition to her new family! Although he will miss her, Penney's handler knows that she's more than ready to leave him for her forever home. He's certain that Penney will bring as much joy to her new family as she did to him. Penney's handler says that she's a very loveable and affectionate pup, and he wishes her well on her new journey.

Week 6

Penney is doing great with her commands! She can sit, down, roll-over, paw, wait, leave it and stay with ease (and with treats)! Penney is also doing really well in her crate. Her handler makes it comfortable for her before he goes to work in the morning. He puts peanut butter on her bone and gives her toys to play with while he's away. Penney worked on her recalls this week. Her handler suggests that the members of her permanent household keeps her on-leash for awhile before letting her off-leash. Once Penney forms a bond, she stays close to her person. Penney's handler says that she is really cute when it's feeding time. When he tells her that it's time to eat, she jumps up and down with anticipation! Penney sits and waits, however, until her handler tells her it's "okay" to enjoy her meal. Penney loves to cuddle and watch TV. "She is very respectful inside, well-behaved, loves to play, and enjoys belly rubs. Penney is more than ready to start her new life with her new family."

Week 5

Penney not only continued to do well with her commands this week, she was also able to make friends with most of her pack-mates!  Penney had a great time playing with Marty in the doggie yard! Because she's so much tinier than her doggie friends, Penney's handler still keeps her interaction with the bigger dogs to a one-on-one basis, but he's very pleased with her progress. Marty's handlers also say that it's great to see Penney interacting with her larger compadres. Penney loves to be petted, give and receive kisses, and is just a sweet little girl. Although she wasn't able to find a home for the holidays, HOPEfully, Penney will be able to find her forever home very soon!

Week 4

Penney is doing great! She's not a cold-weather kind of gal so she's been running back to the comfort of her cell after her potty time in the yard. Penney's handler says that she is really maintaining good behavior in the space that she calls her very own. Her handler tries to keep Penney's activities calm because she can get excited quickly. Penney also sometimes tests her handler to see what she can get away with, but he knows how to read her and he generally wins! Penney's handler reports that even though she occasionally shows the sly side of her personality, she's doing very well with her commands and is a cute, loveable dog. Because she's timid around her larger pack mates, Penney's handler thinks that a family with another small dog for her to play with and be her companion would be very good for her. Penney is ready to leave the big house for a house she can truly call her forever home. Paws crossed, little one!

Week 3

Penney continues to be a star in the program! She and her handler worked on no-pull-walking and other commands this week. Penney also learned to wait for her food until her handler told her it was okay to dig into it! Her handler is really smitten with this bundle of love. Penney continues to dole out kisses to anyone who will accept one (and who wouldn't?) and loves to cuddle with her handler at night. Penney is "doing great" and her handler feels that even though she's been in the program for just a short time, she's ready to dole out kisses to those people she can call her forever family members. Could that be you?

Week 2

Penney's handler is head over heels for this little girl.  He's running out of things to teach her because she's been so wonderful since she arrived.  She gets a gold star for her obedience training this week.  She has done a wonderful job adapting to her new routine and has been a model student in class.  Penney is very sociable.  She loves to greet everyone she comes across throughout her day and she particularly like to dole out kisses to all of her new friends.  Her biggest obstacle so far has been learning to be more patient, but she is excelling now.  She practiced her "leave its" extra hard and that has done wonders for her.  Her handler is so proud of her and can't say enough nice things about her.  He raves about his fabulous Penney to everyone he encounters and is like a proud parent whenever he talks about her.

Week 1

Penney and her handler got off to a good start! "She does have a lot of energy and is very quick," but Penney seems to be adjusting well to her new surroundings. Penney's handler would like her foster family to know that he thinks they did a great job with her crate issues! Penney hasn't barked in her crate at all, and listens to her handler when he gives her the crate command. On her first night, this little pup kept trying to get under her bed. Her handler remembered that she likes to ball up in a blanket, so he put a bedsheet in Penney's crate for her to wrap up in until her blanket arrived at the prison.

Penney's handler has been going in and out of their room a lot to get her used to his daily activities. He also has been working on Penney's "pull walking" and "with me's." Penney loves the doggie yard! When her handler takes her off-leash, she runs around for about 5 or 10 minutes. Penney also seems to have a "pretty good" recall and is very food-motivated. At this point, Penney is being kept on-leash while around the other dogs in the yard until she adjusts to their size and boisterous manner of play. Penney's handler is looking forward to forming a bond with her, and to their time together in the program.

UPDATE - 11/25/09
Penney is a wonderful little Dachshund girl who just needs a second chance. She'll be heading to the big house on Friday to start her training.  She will be working hard on her basic obedience training and also learning boundaries.  She loves the company of other dogs so we're guessing that the doggie play yard will be one of her favorite places to be.  Penney is a four year old dachshund and is available for adoption through Dachshund Rescue of North America
