ADOPTED!!!

Update
Ozzy's forever home lasted roughly two weeks.  Then, it was back to playing the waiting game again.  There are some dogs that walk into a new home and it's as though they've lived there forever.  They never need much of anything in the way of training and are easy as pie.  Ozzy is not...and never has been one of these dogs.  Despite explaining at length his best and worst qualities to every potential adopter, he has been returned again.  This is so sad for him.  When he 'paroled' from the program in January, he was well on his way to becoming a fabulous, upstanding member of a new family.  However, despite our pleadings for continued training, lots of structure and consistent discipline, Ozzy was left to his own devices and reverted back to some of his old habits.  Now, it's back to square one.

Ozzy deserves a home of his own.  He deserves commitment from someone.  And, he deserves unconditional love.  If you plan to apply to adopt Ozzy, or any of our dogs, please know that much will be expected of you in the process.  Dogs are a lifetime commitment.  They depend on you for everything and you need only apply if you have the capacity within you to make good on that commitment.  Ozzy is not an easy dog.  Because of all the bouncing around, it will likely take years before he feels comfortable and settled enough to truly relax in his environment.  But, we are certain that there is a special someone out there with no kids, no cats and preferably no dogs who will love him as much as we do and see the special boy who we have come to adore.  Perhaps that special someone is you.  Or, perhaps it's the person sitting next to you at work.  Or, maybe even someone in your neighborhood who needs Ozzy as much as he needs them.

Week 14
Ozzy went to his new home on Monday, and we are so very happy for him! His handlers' patience and working with Ozzy's shortcomings really helped this pooch realize that life can be good! We send our best to the new family!

Week 13
Ozzy is doing extremely well with his training! He isn’t jumping on strangers anymore, and he’s no longer mouthing.  He’s great in the cell, even on days when he can’t go out in the doggie yard to burn off some energy because of the weather. His manners on the leash are improving, although he does lapse sometimes if he focuses too much on one of the other dogs or one of the other humans.

Ozzy’s handlers say that he’s now a real pleasure to be around...whether indoors or outdoors! He loves to run, play tug games, and is very good at fetch and retrieve! Ozzy also LOVES baths! He just stands there and enjoys being lathered up...it’s like one really long petting session for him!

Ozzy, your improvement in the last couple of weeks just makes us smile!  Good luck with your new family!

Week 12
Ozzy is improving by leaps and bounds! He has learned that if he controls himself, he will get all the human attention that he craves so badly. If Ozzy acts up around a stranger, his handlers walk away until he settles down. If he gets too excited in the doggie yard and starts to jump, his handlers distract him with treats or a toy. Some of the other handlers have taken Ozzy out to the yard to work with him. Ozzy tried to test them, but overall, he did really well with them!

His handlers strongly recommend that Ozzy go to a home of an experienced dog owner with no small children because he gets rough when he plays. And while Ozzy is learning to behave around the other large male dogs, he will react to them if they growl or bark at him. This is something that his handlers say must be watched carefully. Despite these shortcomings, Ozzy’s handlers say that he really is becoming such a well-behaved dog, and they have high hopes for him!  Keep up the good work, Ozzy!

Week 11
Ozzy had quite a week! He's not mouthing his handlers or jumping as much, and he is calming down a lot faster. He's able to meet strangers and behave himself! One of his handlers was really proud of him the other day, when Ozzy sat at a stranger's feet for about 5 minutes while he and his handler were talking! Of course, Ozzy was rewarded with some special attention!

Sometimes, Ozzy tests his handlers' limits, because he THINKS that he can charm them to let him go back into his former ways. Ozzy was playing in his cell with the inmates, and one of his handlers got up to leave. Ozzy thought..."more play time!", but that wasn't the case. He tried to follow his handler, but he blocked the door. When his other handler reached out to restrain Ozzy, he wasn't a happy camper, and threw a bit of a tantrum. Fortunately for Ozzy, his handlers are both strict, but patient. He quickly settled down, and learned a valuable lesson...rules must be followed! Since then, Ozzy is responding even better to his handlers...patience is a virtue, little one! His handlers think that he has really turned a corner this week! They will continue their approach to his well-being, and feel that that he'll make more and more progress every day! Ozzy's "slip back in time" episodes are becoming fewer and farther in between, and overall, he's making marked improvements!

Despite his issues (living on a chain for so long can give any dog issues), Ozzy really is a loveable boy! He's happiest when he is receiving human touch. One of his handlers lays down on the floor with him, and they have fallen asleep together a few times. Ozzy relaxes, snuggles up, and basks in the warmth of a good belly rub and some love!

You go, Ozzy!

Week 10
Ozzy made a new friend this week in Maggie.  The two of them will run together for hours in the dog yard.  He is very polite with her and takes her corrections like a gentleman.  He also likes to play with Mitzi.  He's very good with the small dogs.  Ozzy reached several milestones this week that made us all very proud.  He completely stopped barking when his handlers leave for work, he's no longer jumping up on new friends, he's almost learned to completely ignore Oliver and his mouthing for attention has diminished significantly.  Ozzy is really getting a handle on the whole idea of good manners and he'll make a fantastic friend for someone.  We are so pleased with the progress that he has made and look forward to the day when he can show off all of his newly learned skills to a family of his own.

Week 9
Ozzy is such a sweet dog, and he is catching on quickly to what his handlers are teaching him! He craves human contact and can get a little pushy when he doesn't get it. He is learning that if he sits still and is polite, he will get all of the attention he wants! Ozzy is also responding to his handlers when they tell him not to get mouthy and jump up on people! His recall is also improving!  Wow...what a week!

Ozzy is great with the small dogs and the entire Eskie Brigade! He will bow to them to let them know it's time to play...and he loves a good game of fetch!  Keep focused on your tasks, Ozzy!  You're doing great!

Week 8
Ozzy came back to stay with his former handlers on 12/07/08.  Although they did a wonderful job with him the last time he was in the program, Ozzy has regressed through no fault of his own.  His handlers know that he has his foundation of training, so they are concentrating on helping him with his self-control and crate issues.  He is doing rather well with strict structure.  Ozzy and Oliver still have their issues.  Ozzy's handlers are NOT allowing him to bark and growl at Oliver.  They step in right away, and use a method of corrective discipline that they learned during his last stay at the prison.  Ozzy responds well to this method!

He now likes his crate, and spends a lot of time in it when his handlers are in the cell and keep the door open for him. He plays with his rawhide bone quite often!  He also likes the Kong ball and playing "tug" with his rope!  Ozzy's ability to go up and down stairs is still a work in progress.  His handlers will work with him this week, and are confident that he'll do better with this as well!  Ozzy needs to get some meat back on his bones, so his handlers are allowing him to eat his fill.  They're careful, though, to give him small amounts of food several times a day to avoid any accidents in his crate or his cell!  Despite his issues with Oliver, Ozzy has a gentle demeanor.  Once he re-learns some self-control and his behavioral boundaries, he will be a wonderful friend to anyone who wants to share their home with him.  His handlers say that overall, Ozzy is doing very well, and they have high hopes for him.  We do too, Ozzy!  You did it before, you can do it again!

Week 6 & 7
Poor Ozzy has had a whirlwind two weeks.  He was adopted, returned in less than two days, had a slumber party at the vet's office and headed off to a kennel for a temporary stay.  On Tuesday, he'll be moving again for just a few days to a foster home who always has a free space for a HOPE Dog.  Then, it will be back to the big house for this boy.  We are so saddened by this turn of events and incredibly disappointed in the way he was treated by the people we trusted to care for him in what was supposed to be his "forever home."  Two days isn't enough time to get to know anyone and it's certainly not enough time to expect that any dog adapt and understand all of the rules and expectations.  But, this is all behind him now and despite his current state of despondence at being bounced around so much, we're certain that the right home is out there for Ozzy.  A home with people who will accept him for exactly who he is and make good on the commitment to provide a lifetime of love, companionship, safety and security.  He deserves no less and he is welcome with us until he finds his way to that home.  Once he gets back to the prison, he'll go back to square one and begin his training all over again so that he can make up the ground he lost over the last few weeks.  Stay tuned for updates on his progress and his search for a true forever home.

Week 5
Ozzy had a fantastic week filled with milestones.  He is now solidly housebroken, mastering his basic commands and having a great time with his new pal Tina.  Ozzy's handler reports that Ozzy has reached that point where he can settle himself down rather than needing the handler to intervene.  When Ozzy gets overly excited, he has started to back down all by himself which is a huge success for him.  His tendency to mouth his handler is still present, but so significantly reduced that it's almost hard to believe it's the same dog. He has become very settled and well-mannered when indoors and loves to sit with his handler for a good came of cards.  Way to go, Ozzy!

Week 4
Ozzy is making good progress toward beginning a good canine citizen.  He has made leaps and bounds in his quest to develop good leash manners, is doing extremely well on his obedience studies and has had a very successful housebreaking week.  He still gets a bit unsettled when his handler leaves for the day, but a special routine has helped in that regard and Ozzy is doing much better now dealing with his anxiety.

Week 3
Ozzy is a sweet, sweet boy!  He loves attention and craves it whenever he's around potential petters, or humans as we generally refer to them.  The long list of training goals that he came in with is starting to diminish.  He is walking much better on the leash this week and is getting close to receiving his housebreaking badge.  He's almost there and we're all pulling for him!  His basic commands are coming along nicely and he's very responsive to the training.  He loves to play with Tina and once he gets his stitches out this week it will be a whole new game for the two of them.  Have fun!!

Week 2
It's amazing what a difference a couple of weeks can make.  Ozzy is doing great and loving all of the attention that he's been getting.  He loves to be petted and is learning that he can get a lot more belly rubs and ear scratches when he keeps all four paws on the ground.  His leash manners are improving, but he still has a ways to go in that area.  He loves his doggie companions and it's great to see him romping around in the dog yard, free as a bird.  He is heading to the vet this week for a check-up and we're sure he'll be very popular there.  It's hard not to fall in love with this big lug of a boy.  He has such a sweet face and every bone in his wagging tail tells you that he loves every minute spent with you!

Week 1
Ozzy is starting from scratch, but doing everything with a smile and a wagging tail!  This week, he was focused on learning the basics of housetraining and by the end of the week he had a pretty good grasp on the difference between inside and outside!  He has been an excellent patient and his handler reports that despite needing pills to recover from his neuter surgery, daily ear cleanings to clear up his double ear infection and...A BATH...he's been perfectly wonderful and very easy to handle.  He is so starved for affection that he has had to work very hard to learn that teeth on toys is just fine, but it's no way to ask for attention.  Fortunately, Mr. Ozzy is more than happy to try his very hardest to do whatever you ask of him which makes him a joy to train.  He's already learning that petting and snuggles are offered all day long and there's no need to beg.  He'll spend the next week or so continuing to burn off the energy that was stored up in the time he spent on the chain, but then it's down to business and we can't wait to see Ozzy start to flourish!

UPDATE - 10/6/08
Ozzy is a lucky boy.  Although he lost his owner due to health problems, all of the neighbors near his home pitched in to make sure that he was well cared for while they tried to find him a new home.  He holds a special place in each of their hearts and we're sure they'll be watching his progress and cheering him on while he waits for a new home.  Ozzy is available for adoption through Starfish to the Sea Animal Rescue.
