Week 9
Oscar’s handler reports that he continues to do well with his commands and
his progress in the program. He also reports that Oscar was more playful
than usual this week. In one of his reports, Oscar’s handler told us that he
taught this pup the game of hide and seek. Well, this pooch turned the
tables on his handler this week. “He scared me a couple of times, because I
didn’t see him. But, he had just covered himself up with his blankets and
then he jumped out onto me.” All was well in the life of Oscar and his
handler. We know that your new family will love your antics, sweet boy!

Week 8
Oscar’s handler reports that “this week has been very good for him.” One
day, this pup had his first off-leash experience outside. His handler says
that “at first I was hesitant, but I let him go and he did not go too far
and kept his eyes on me the whole time, even with distractions.” One of
Oscar’s main homework assignments is his tendency to jump on people. “I’ve
been working on this, so every time he wants to do it, he’ll look at me
first. That’s when I know he’ll jump on someone. Other than that, he is good
with all of his other commands.” Oscar is also learning what it is to be a
member of his pack! “He is getting to know the other dogs better, and that
they’re his friends.” Keep coming around, little boy!

Week 7
Oscar’s handler says that he’s very good on leash (he doesn’t pull at all),
but he’s still working on his stay and watch me commands. This pup is “very
good at his distance downs, and he rolls over a bunch of times. He also
doesn’t mind meeting new people.” His handler learned this week that Oscar
is afraid of lightning. “He decided to jump on my bed and lick my face so he
knew that I was there for him. Since then, he wanted to sleep in the bed
every night (and his handler, not surprisingly, was willing to accommodate
him). I started covering Oscar up and playing hide and seek with the covers.
He loved it. He is a very loyal dog.”
Like Chloe, Oscar had his first outing as a HOPE Ambassador at the Adoption
Day hosted by the Tractor Supply Co. in Carlisle on Saturday. He did his
handler proud! Oscar loved all of the people, and most of the other dogs,
that he met. This boy also loved to get close to his fans! He seemed to
gravitate towards the customers that he sensed were dog lovers. In fact, at
one point a woman was petting him, and he put his snout between her knees
(she didn’t mind at all), as if to say “if I stay here will you take me home
with you and pet me forever?” We HOPE that you find your forever family very
soon, sweet Oscar!

Week 6
Oscar’s handler reports that he was a star student this week! “He is doing
well with rolling over, sit, down, sitting pretty, giving both paws and
standing up. “ This pup is also working on his long distance down, stays and
watch me commands. We’re sure that he’ll know them like the back of his paw
in no time because “Oscar is a very smart dog and is willing to learn
anything new.” His handler also says that his pooch is “very respectful to
everybody he has been around, and he is very curious of his surroundings.”
Oscar had a new experience this week. He saw a groundhog in the big yard and
thought it would be a great playmate. His handler told him “leave it,” and
Oscar came right back to his side. Good boy! He’s also enchanted by bees and
any type of bugs that fly his way. This pup is really a member of the pack.
“He likes to play with Chloe, Nyla, Sky and Gina.” You’re doing great,
little one!

Week
5
Oscar’s handler reports that he is doing well with his commands. “He is also
starting to get to know the other dogs, and he also loves meeting new
people, which is new for him.” Oscar got to go to the big doggie yard this
week, and “man, did he let loose. He ran until he got tired, and when he
caught his breath, he started playing again….running like there was no
tomorrow.” One of this pup’s handlers was paroled this week. “Since then,
Oscar has been feeling down. I think he misses him in some sort of way.”
We’re sure you’ll find someone to call your own who won’t leave you ever
again, Oscar.
Field Trip Alert (as told by HOPE Volunteer Margie) - We've
been on a couple of outings now and I have to say Oscar is one of the
happiest dogs I've gotten to meet. He's always wearing a smile and is always
eager to accept pets and give out kisses. We went over to the college and
used the 50 ft leash. Oscar really seemed to enjoy that, but I was surprised
at how close he stayed. It seems like he really wants to be with someone. I
was reading his weekly updates and it's hard to believe that when he came in
to the prison, he had a fear of strangers. He now seems to really enjoy
meeting people and receiving pets. In fact when we returned to the prison
yesterday, as we were walking thru the yard, he directed me over to the
guardhouse so that he could meet two of the officers. Oscar's a joy to be
with - he's a lot of fun, rides great in the car and his loose leash manners
are really coming along. I have to admit we did have a little trouble with
his "stay" and I asked his handler to work on it this week. I was asking him
to "stay" and then walking away to take his picture, but before I could snap
the picture the boy was in my face, licking away!

Week 4
“Oscar is doing a little better when strange people come up to see him, as
long as they don’t walk up to him fast or put their face in his.” His
handlers are going to concentrate on the latter in the upcoming weeks. Oscar
is also trying to find his niche in the pack, so that also will be an area
of concentration in his training. “He‘s not jumping on others as much
anymore, and as far as his sits, down, stays and other commands, Oscar is a
smart dog, so he will pick up fast on those” You’re going to be fine, pup!

Week 3
Oscar’s handlers report that he’s really doing well with his training. If
you’ve been following this pup’s story, you know that his handlers have been
honing his skills with basic commands such as sit and down, to more
difficult commands such as standing on his hind legs. “Oscar has come a long
way, because when he got here, he didn’t know any commands.” As for his
personality, Oscar fills his handlers’ days with affection and laughter.
“What a dog…he is so loving. He just wants to be petted and give us kisses.
When he wants something, he’ll let you know by rubbing up against your leg
and going after the object or thing until you give it to him.” After just
three weeks, Oscar has already earned bed privileges. “He loves to sleep
with you, and he won’t bother you at all.” Keep up the good work, Oscar!

Week 2
Oscar is realizing that there are a lot of things at the prison that he
hasn’t seen in a while, but he’s slowly starting to adapt to them. His
handlers continued to work on his sits, down, stays and paw commands this
week, as well as teaching him to be a friendly member of his new pack. Oscar
“is doing better when it comes to new people, but he still shows some fear
at times. He just has to start trusting others around him. Oscar is smart,
and will come around fast.”

Week 1
After just two days, Oscar has learned some good manners and is a whiz when
it comes to his training. “He is a good listener. We have been working on
his sit (which he does well with), he is pretty good at lay down, and we
also taught Oscar how to roll over, paw, sit pretty and dance on his hind
legs.” This pup warmed up to his cellies right away. “He licked us all day,
and didn’t want us to leave him alone.” Wow, Oscar, what a start!
