ADOPTED!!!
Week 9
As you can see, Nyla is adopted! Everyone associated with the HOPE program
is thrilled for her, and so are her handlers! Here is their last report.
“Nyla’s out of here! She has found a fitting home and leaves tomorrow
(Thursday). Nyla will be greatly missed. It has been a great experience
having her as a cell mate. She made the cell a very relaxed environment and
was fun to work with. Nyla, by far, has to be the most intelligent dog to
come through the program. She has been a great experience and a pleasure to
live with. Nyla’s one of a kind, and a keeper.” Congratulations, sweet pup!
Enjoy your new family!

Week 8
“Nyla is doing great!” This pup tends to ignore most of the dogs in the
program, but she had some special time with Maggie this week. “They spent
some time visiting in Maggie’s cell, and then they played and ran around the
tier.” Her handlers are making sure that Nyla is getting plenty of exercise
by playing fetch and playing tug with her as well. She’s also “enjoys
playing ‘find it’ with hidden toys and treats. We hide a bunch of treats in
one of her favorite blankets and tell her to find it. She runs to the
blanket and digs like crazy to find them. Nyla is still easy going and is
always happy.”

Week 7
Nyla continued to show “all of us all of the terrific qualities that she
possesses this week.” She loves playing with all of the other dogs in the
program, and, of course, her time in the doggie yard. “My cellie continues
to run with her in the afternoon. It’s an activity that Nyla looks so
forward to, especially playing with her Kong ball and the flattened
basketball.” One evening this week, one of her handlers playfully teased
Nyla by barking at her. “She went crazy. She was so excited and playful. I
calmed her down by gently wrestling with her and her blanket. She loves to
play with the same blanket she sleeps with.” HOPEfully, soon, you’ll have a
home and a family to play with, sweet Nyla!

Week 6
Nyla’s handlers report that they “had a great week with her. She’s always
happy.” This pup got to spend a lot of time out back playing fetch. She also
did a lot of sunbathing to improve her tan! Nyla loves her time in the big
doggie yard so much that when her handlers tell her it’s time to go play,
“she grabs her red Kong ball and carries it with her. She has no time for
anyone who may want to give her a pet on the way because she knows it’s time
to have fun!” Nyla’s handlers are “still waiting for someone to adopt this
gentle girl, but in the meantime, we will greatly enjoy her company and
playful personality.”

Week 5
Her handlers say that “Nyla is doing great…no complaints here! Really, you
couldn’t ask for a nicer dog. She does whatever we ask her to do, and rarely
spends time on a leash. Nyla follows us everywhere we go.” This pup got some
fun time in the yard chasing her favorite Kong ball and a ripped up
basketball. She also met one of the new kids on the block, Ike, and “loves
him. She gets excited when she sees him.” When Nyla isn’t doing her regular
training and play time, she has been curling up under her blanket on one of
her handler’s bunk. “When she is under the blanket, and can’t see who is at
our door, she stands up and barks once. We call her ‘ghost,’ and tell her to
go back to sleep.” Nyla doesn’t hesitate, and quickly drops down for some
more snooze time! Here’s to plenty of toys, naps and loving in your forever
home soon, Nyla!

Week 4
Nyla’s handlers report that they had another great week with her and that
they really enjoy her company! This pup is getting a lot of exercise (about
an hour a day), but still has some R&R in her training program as well. She
loves the swimming pools in the yard on hot days, or just lying in the grass
on cool days. Nyla is also responding very well to her known commands and is
“quick to learn the new things” that her handlers teach her. Her handlers
especially love Nyla’s personality. “It’s almost like she’s the block
celebrity. Everywhere Nyla goes, she brings a smile to those who come in
contact with her. Everyone wants to stop and pet her while she licks their
face. Nyla will have to find a home with a deflated basketball because it’s
her favorite toy. We love having Nyla in our lives, because she makes our
days easier and brighter, but we can’t wait to see her go to a good home.”
We ditto your handlers’ thoughts, sweet Nyla!

Week 4
Nyla’s handlers report that she’s a nature lover! She met a toad outside of
the block in the grass one evening. “She was so excited that even after we
were in for the night, when we said, ‘where is it girl?’ Nyla would search
out our room like a Police K-9 dog!” This pup had an outing with one of the
HOPE volunteers this week, and her handlers were pleased to hear that she
got along with all of the other dogs she met! “If a family or person is
looking for a good addition to their life, Nyla is the perfect candidate.
The best way to describe her is a ‘hassle-free dog.’ She is also very funny
and loving.”

Week 3
Nyla’s handlers report that “it is a privilege to have her as a companion in
this program.” This pup not only got gold stars on her report card this week
for her sit, stay, down and leave it commands, she continued to endear
herself to the humans on the block. “She interacts with everyone, and has
made a lot of friends in the short time she has been here.” Yes, Nyla is a
pit bull, and with the breed comes, as one of her handlers cites, a
“stereotypical reputation, but she’s just the opposite. She loves to be
close to us, and is affectionate. Her favorite toy is her “kong” ball. My
cellie takes her outside with it, and she will chase it again and again
until she’s exhausted. Nyla also doesn’t mind sharing her toy with the other
dogs. Her handlers are still bemused because she’s not exhibiting any of the
traits that brought her to the program. “Nyla will make someone very happy,
and will be a great addition to any family.” Is that family in your near
future, little girl? Paws crossed!

Week 2
Nyla’s handlers are happy to say that “we had a great week with her. She
showed a lot of positive interaction with both people and the other dogs.
She is calm and easy to work with. From the start, Nyla has shown that she
is intelligent and extremely attentive. She is always watching for our eye
contact and hand signals.” Because she’s so new to the program, her handlers
kept her training to the basics. Nyla worked on her off-leash walking (she
stays right by her handlers’ sides) and her leave its. Like the other dogs,
Nyla enjoyed her time cooling off in a pool this week. She also found a
deflated basketball that she thought was the best! Although she wanted to
carry it back to her cell, her handlers quickly taught her that it’s an
outside toy. After her first full week in the program, Nyla’s handlers
report that “we really don’t see any reason that would hold her back from
being adopted.” Here’s to your forever home, Nyla!

Week 1
Nyla’s handlers report that “we have only had her with us for two days, but
so far so good. She responds well to whatever we ask her to do. She is
sitting well for leashing and entering/exiting doors. Nyla isn’t much for
standing around, so getting her to lie down is really easy. We’ve noticed
that eye contact with Nyla is a constant, which makes it easy for her to
understand our requests.” One day, her handlers started Nyla’s exercise
skills. Since it was so hot, they started slowly, but Nyla was happy to walk
some laps with her new friends, and then laid down in the doggie pool. Nyla
is also meeting the members of her new pack. “She got close to Gina one day,
and seemed to enjoy her company. There was a lot of sniffing and tail
wagging going on. She then spent some time in the dog run next to Sky, and
didn’t even look his way.” Nyla really loved her time in the big doggie
yard. “She ran like crazy.” In fact, she was so tuckered out from her romp
that her handlers say that she didn’t want to give up her place on their
bunk! Nyla has found that prison life is good for her. “She is very friendly
with everyone she meets and is quick to lay down on their feet. As fast as
she has picked up on her training, we hope that Nyla will continue to
improve and get herself into a loving home. So far, we have never seen a dog
so happy to live with us in the prison.”

UPDATE
7-20-11
Nyla headed to the big house today after waiting almost eight months for a
home of her own. She didn't have any luck in that department so she's
hoping that the HOPE Program will be just the kind of help she needs to help
her reach her goal. She is a beautiful, eight year old Pit Bull who
was left alone to starve in the bitter cold of winter when her owner moved
away. CPAA rescued her and her daughter, Leah, and kept them safe, but
it's definitely time for them to have a home of their own. She is available for adoption through
CPAA. Stay tuned
for next week's update.
