ADOPTED!!!

Week 9
Mitzie left for her new home on Friday! We know that her handler will miss her dearly, but she's now in the forever place that he was hoping she would find! Our best wishes to the new family!

Week 8
Mitzie is doing a lot better venturing out on her own! Her handler continues to leave their door open for about ½ hour each night, and Mitzie has been seeking out people to give them a sniff! That’s a big step for this little girl! If she gets a little scared on her ventures, she’ll run back to her space. When she’s out and about, and her handler calls her, she’ll return on command!

Mitzie continues to do great with reacting to her handler’s asking her if she wants to go “potty”! She becomes very vocal and bows and jumps while she’s barking. Although the other guys on the tier don’t appreciate her exuberance at 6:00 a.m., her handler gets a chuckle every morning listening to her and watching her antics! Once she’s out in the yard, her handler will let her off-leash for a run, but she doesn’t go far from him. When she sees the other dogs, she’ll go over to meet them after her handler gives her the go-ahead.

Mitzie has mastered going up and down the stairs! She doesn’t hesitate, and has no fear! Her handler will walk around with her on the top of tier, because she loves exploring!  Mitzie LOVED the snow! She was out early one morning and acted like a fool! She rubbed snow all over herself, barked, ran around, and just really had a ball! Her handler said it was a great pleasure to see her so relaxed!  Her handler thinks that Mitzie is ready for a family of her own! Paws crossed, Mitzie!

Week 7
Mitzie is starting to come out of her shell a little more each day! She is going up to strangers and giving them a sniff...something she wouldn't have done a week or two ago! Mitzie gets along with all of the other dogs, and is getting some special attention, since she's the only lady in the house!  Mitzie's handler is working on her commands. It's a work in progress, but he's persevering! Mitzie's recall is great, especially when she's out in the doggie yard! Mitzie's handler can let her off-leash. and she'll run around, but comes back to him on command. Her handler thinks that once Mitzie's new family bonds with her, they will be able to walk her without a leash if they choose to do so.

Mitzie has learned to talk for potty breaks! When her handler asks if she wants to "go potty," she barks, jumps, and rubs up against him until she gets to go outside!  Mitzie's handler feels that with the progress that she has shown, she's ready for a new home, and will thrive in a quieter environment. He thinks that a loving home will bring out the dog she so wants to be. He really loves this little one, and is hoping that someone will be able to give her the love that she so deserves.  Mitzie seems like a baby taking baby steps sometimes, but she's trying! Keep trying, Mitzie! We know you can do it!

Week 6
Mitzie is doing better all around! She is eating and putting on weight! Of course, she still likes to eat after 11:00 p.m. (her handler opines that perhaps she likes candlelit dinners)! Of course, whatever her handler is eating, he's willing to share, and Mitzie knows it!  Mitzie didn’t like her crate at first, but now she’s very good about it! Her handler will put it on the floor and say, "Mitzie, crate" and she goes right into it! He calmly tells her where he's going at the moment, and Mitzie doesn't cry or bark while she's left alone.

The big doggie yard hasn't been open for a couple of days because of the weather, but Mitzie's handler found a niche out back where her little body could get some exercise! Mitzie is very good about coming when her handler calls her!  Mitzie's handler likes her paws to be nice and clean when they get back to their space. As soon as she's spiffed up, she knows that she can go into the cell. Mitzie is allowed to run around the tier, and she likes to visit with the other dogs. She gets along well with all of them, but Murphy has really caught her eye! She'll bark as if to make a special request to see him! Mitzie's handler is now starting to work on her basic commands skills. He thought that it was best that Mitzie learn to trust him before he pushed her too hard.

Mitizie doesn't chew on things around her space, like shoes and slippers, which is a good thing! To her handler's dismay, she doesn't seem to be interested in the cute toys that he has for her. He tries to get her interested in them, but it seems he plays with them more than she does! He has a really cute Christmas Deer that Mitzie showed some interest in. Her handler was thrilled! He thought that finally she would take the step to play...almost like seeing your child take their first step. If Mitzie isn't playing with the toy, at least she rests her head on it.  Mitzie's handler says that she is really coming along by leaps and bounds. She's a very sweet, loving and loyal dog. She will make someone a very wonderful addition to the family. If her handler could keep her, he would do so in a New York minute!

Week 5

Like everyone, Mitzie has her good days and her bad days. She has a very friendly manner, and overall, she's doing great! Her handler keeps their door open for about a half hour each evening so Mitzie can wonder freely in and out of their cell. She’s still a little tentative, and doesn’t venture too far. Her handler is there to reassure her, however, and he feels that Mitzie now feels safer in her surroundings.

Mitzie, Maggie and Oliver were playing in the yard one day, and Oliver got a little overbearing for Mitzie’s taste! She let him know in no uncertain terms that she had had enough! After that, it was Mitzie chasing Oliver, and not the other way around! She gets along with all of the other dogs, and speaks “dog language” very well!

Mitzie has gained a little weight! She still likes to eat her dinner around 11:00 - 11:30 p.m. Her handler doesn’t worry about this, because he thinks that she feels safer eating in the dark. Mitzie’s handler noticed that she was holding her food in her mouth and then coming up on his bed to eat it. He quickly broke her of that habit!

Mitzie is a very good little dog, and considering what she had been through, will tolerate a lot from her human friends! Her handler hopes that she will find a home where she will receive the love that he knows she will surely extend to her new family. He’s very pleased with Mitzie’s progress!  Go, Mitzie!

Week 4

Mitzie is getting better...inch by inch, step by step! She still shows some fear, but her handler is working with her to gain some more confidence around humans!  Mitzie gets along well with the other dogs, but has no problem letting them know if they're getting a little rough during play time. She's composed, not aggressive, but she knows how to get her point across! She's also protective of her bed space when the other dogs pay her a call. She doesn't mind sharing her space....just don't let one of her canine friends get on her bed! Her handler is working with her to be more lady-like when the other pups come to visit, and she's learning!

Mitzie has no issues with her crate, and is good about letting her handler know when it's "potty time." She still only likes to eat during the night, but for right now, her handler doesn't see this as a problem. He thinks that once she finds her forever home, she'll eat more regularly.  Her handler thinks that once Mitzie gets over her fears, she will make someone a very loyal companion, and an adorable pet! Could that be you?

Keep up the good work, Mitzie!

Week 3

Mitzie has her handler wrapped around her little paw...and with good reason.  She is coming along at a great pace and making good progress.  She's already used to being picked up and handled by her regular handler and this week she added a few more friends to that circle of safety.  She's also spending more time out on the block when there are people around and learning that it really isn't as scary as she thought.  She still prefers to dine in the evenings and that's just fine with everyone.  A more regular schedule will come in time as she gets more and more comfortable.  Mitzie is quite a little lady and we are really enjoying getting to know her!

Week 2
Mitzie's handler thinks that she's a wonderful little dog! She's still afraid, but she's coming around! She has been introduced to different people on the block, and she's getting to know, and be comfortable with, most of the other handlers!  Mitzie only eats when she feels like it (her favorite time seems to be during the night). Although her handler will work to get her on a regular eating schedule, he’s less concerned right now about WHEN she eats than IF she eats! He’s pleased that she seems to have gained a little weight! She is also house broken!

Mitzie is very good on-leash! She doesn't pull, and will listen if she gets a little ahead of her handler. Another one of the handlers took her out, and she did well with him too! When she's out in the doggie yard, her handler has four leashes on her so when it's time to go back inside, he doesn't have to chase her all over the yard! She's getting better though, and doesn't run away now when it's time to leave! When she's running freely in the yard, she'll come up to her handler, check in, and then off she goes! She'll have the extra leashes on her until her recall improves. Her handler knows that it may take some time because of her background, but he's up to to the task!

Mitzie’s handler says that she will be a very special dog for someone. He's sure that as the weeks progress, she will progress as well!  Keep up the good work, Mitzie!

Week 1
Mitzi is off to a really strong start.  After spending nearly four years in the barn with her family, she's handling all of the new sights, sounds, smells and humans extremely well.  After just a few days with her new handler, she is now hopping up onto the bed of her own volition and settling in for some "TV time."  As with the others in the Eskie Brigade, she gets along very, very well with the other dogs in the program and loves her morning playtime with the Eskies and Oliver.  She doesn't care much for eating right now, but we know she'll come around once she gets a little more comfortable in her surroundings.  She's an absolute doll and we think she has quite a bright future ahead of her.  Keep up the good work, Mitzi!!

UPDATE - November 30
This little girl is the last of the barn dogs.  Mitzie will head to the big house on December 2nd and we can't wait to start teaching her that life gets better starting now!  She is very sweet, but needs a confidence boost.  Check back often to see how she is progressing during her stay at the prison.  Mitze is a beautiful, 4-year old American Eskimo Dog who is available for adoption through Eskie Rescuers United
