Weeks 17 & 18
Although Maggie is still having a problem mastering her down skill, her handlers report that “Ms. Maggie is showing loads of love. She is surprising us, because she’s becoming more interested in strangers and those she doesn’t regularly interact with.” Maggie was always fearful of uniforms. She now allows one of the Sergeants on the block pet her, “and she did very well when one of the Corrections Officers walked her on-leash!” This week, Maggie met a new friend in Taavi. “We introduced them with parallel walking, and they did great!! Maggie is looking for someone out there to love her. She is ready to be loved. She just needs someone to give her a good home.” We HOPE you find one soon, sweet pup!
**Maggie has "paroled" back to her foster home where she is waiting patiently for a home of her very own.

Weeks 15 & 16
Maggie’s handlers are proud that she not only continues to gain confidence each day, but that she also understands her commands in both English and Spanish! Although this pup is showing a stubborn side of her personality at times, “she’s progressing with her sit and stays. Her focus is an issue with the come command when there’s a lot going on.” Her handlers plan to work with Maggie with this issue. One of this pup’s handlers had her out in the dog yard this week, and “she was having so much fun just running. She would run to the other side of the yard, then back to me (to chase her), then back off again.” Maggie got to visit with her pal Bo at the Mutt Mixer last weekend, and the two of them had a ball catching up on old times and playing with wild abandon! Because of her shyness, Maggie was in a separate room with some of her canine pals. Every once in a while, she was brave enough to peek around the curtain to see what was going on in the other room! What a cutie! HOPE volunteer Margie took this pup on a field trip with her HOPE dog, Danner, one day, and Maggie’s handlers say that “she came back pooped! [in a good way]” “She is such a great dog. We are going to miss Maggie. We hope she gets a good home because she has so much love to give.”

Week 14
“Ms. Maggie’s” handlers report that she knows her sit, stay, wait, and down commands like the back of her paw. She also has been sitting at the door of their cell when it’s time to go outside without her handlers telling her to do so! Although Maggie still struggles to maintain focus when there’s a lot going on around her, she “showed a lot of spunk this week, and has really learned that the people around her are not going to hurt her.” She even let the Sergeant pet her, which earned her a gold star from her handlers since she doesn’t like folks in uniform! Of course, Maggie continued to love her play time with her pack mates. She and Izzy played together several times this week. “Basically, they chased each other until they tired each other out. One day, a rabbit jumped out and scared them. They both were done for a while after that happened.” Maggie also had some fun time with Jada, Chi Chi and Rambo this week! “She is our little girl, but we have all the faith that she would be a great member of your family!!”

Weeks 12 & 13
Maggie’s handlers report that she has been having some fun, in addition to learning just what it is to be a loved dog! “She has shown great progress with people! She plays with them more, and seems at home during block recreation. Maggie goes up to loads of people now, but she still has her fearful moments.” This pup still has an aversion to the folks in her world who wear a uniform. “We try to take her near the Correction Officers. She sniffs them, but if they try to engage her, she runs and cowers.” Still, her handlers are happy with her progress in her socialization skills! Maggie’s handlers have reported from the get-go that Maggie likes her recreation time at the prison! “She now gives her paw, plays catch, and retrieves her ball. She loves playing with her (human) friends here and the other dogs. Maggie would make a great member of your family!”

Week 11
With her handlers’ help and guidance, Maggie “has begun approaching people
on her own. She walks up to them, smells them, and if they ignore her, she
follows them.” For a pup who was afraid of everything and everybody you met
a few weeks ago, that’s quite an accomplishment, little girl! Now, Maggie
had to deal with the unexpected snow we had last week. “At first she seemed
to like it, but then she started dancing because her paws were cold.” You’re
getting used to all the people in your world, Maggie, now you have to tackle
getting used to snow! We know that you’ll find a good home to help you
continue your journey to new-found confidence, Maggie!

Week 10
Maggie’s handlers report this week that she continues to show a lot of
promise! In fact, they gave her gold stars for her ability to be better with
the folks in her world. “She is engaging strangers and playing with more
people.” Maggie still doesn’t like the Corrections Officers. Her handlers
think it might be something about the uniform, because it’s definitely not
how they treat her. Maggie’s handlers do what they can to calm her when
they’re around, but, for some reason, she remains fearful of them. Her
handlers will continue to work with her through this issue. “Maggie is a
really good dog, who would be a great member of the family. She gets along
well with all of the other dogs in the HOPE program, and she’s an all around
great doggy!!!”

Week 9
Maggie’s handlers gave her rave reviews for her ability to get more
comfortable around a lot of people when she’s out on the tier, as well as
her come commands this week. This pup asked her handlers to tell you a
little a bit about her. “Hi, my name is Maggie. I’m a one-year old hound
mix, and I’m really cute. Please don’t think I’m conceited, but my handlers
think that I’m a ‘looker!’ For the first year of my life, I was abused. That
makes me afraid of strangers, but I’m coming around. I like some people now,
because they let me run with other dogs. The irony of my being abused is
that I landed in jail, but that’s okay! I’ve met some people here to look
after me, and make me feel really safe! If you adopt me, I promise that I
will love you, miss you when you’re gone, and will be happy every time you
come back home. Pinky swear!” Maggie and her handlers know that she is ready
for “a good home and family.” Could that be you?

Week 8
When Miss Maggie stepped into the big house, she was afraid of everything
and all of the humans she encountered. Her handlers now report that “she is
gaining confidence within herself. She’s approaching people on her own, and
is beginning to respond to treats from people outside of the program.” In
fact, her handlers gave her gold stars for her ability to do the latter this
week. What a huge accomplishment, Maggie! Of course, she loves her pack
mates. They’ve been her support system throughout her training. “Maggie
really enjoys when she gets to run. Everyone who sees her says that she runs
like a deer.” Keep up the good work, Miss Maggie!
Field Trip Alert (from HOPE volunteer Cindy) - I took Maggie
out yesterday and we had a great time. When her handlers were bringing her
out of the cell, she looked like any other dog. She was happy, her tail was
up, she was excited to be with them. But when they got close to me, she
stopped and didn’t want to come forward. I threw some cheese to her, but she
wouldn’t eat it. So I took her leash and we went up the steps to check out,
and she went right up the steps, no problem. She walked out of the block and
didn’t look back until she saw other people. Then she got scared/nervous. I
just kept walking. We got outside and the guy that has the drug dog wanted
to see her. She would not go anywhere near him.
She got in the car and lay on the floor. I tried to get her on the back
seat, but she was more comfortable on the floor so I didn’t push it. I took
her to Tommy’s place (Tommy adopted Mason) because he has a lot of land and
there wouldn’t be anyone else around. When we got to Tommy’s we had to walk
to where he and Mason were. She pulls really hard on the leash, but her tail
was down, not completely tucked. Mason was sitting up high on the front end
loader and Maggie saw him and she was jumping up trying to sniff him. When
we got the dogs together, they sniffed, but that was it. I think it’s
because they are both hunting breeds and were more interested in looking for
birds than in each other. We had both dogs on long leads and they took off
sniffing and exploring. Maggie’s tail was out and she was having a blast. We
probably walked for more than an hour. A few times I called Maggie and she
came running full speed, but would run right past me. But at least she heard
me calling and came close. We then sat outside and I had some string cheese
and would call her over. She came to me and I asked her to sit and she did
and she took the cheese right out of my hand. I asked her to “down” once and
she did it!
On the way in the prison we saw the drug officer again. He’s looking for a
dog and he asked if he could hold her leash. I gave him the leash and Maggie
was nervous, but she did sit and stay for him. We walked back in and she
pulled me the whole way. There were a lot more people walking around and she
was pretty upset. When we got inside the fence of our cell block, she
immediately calmed down. There were some inmates walking into the block, and
she went right up to one and sniffed his hand and wanted to walk beside him.
I was amazed. She’s a really sweet girl and I agree with the assessment of
the trainers that she is ready to be adopted. I think that when she gets to
know a person, she will bond and while she may never like when other people
come around, as long as her person understand what Maggie needs, I think she
will be fine.

Weeks 6 & 7
Her handlers report that “Ms. Maggie is really starting to come out of her
shell more. She was out on the tier this week during block recreation, and
she went up to strangers sniffing and investigating them. Maggie is still
curious, but she now knows that no one is going to hurt her in here!!”
That’s a very big accomplishment for her because of the activity and noise
she encounters when she’s out of her cell! As they’ve reported in the past,
Maggie feels best in the company of her pack mates. She especially has taken
a shine to Bo. “They love each other.” Her handlers have only the ultimate
goal for her, and that is to be adopted. “Maggie will be a great member of
the family. I hope someone adopts her soon so they don’t miss all of the
love she has to offer.” We have the same hope for you, little girl!

Week 5
Maggie’s handlers report that although they are still easing her into her
training, “she has slowed down with pulling when she comes in from outside.
Her sit, down and stays still need some work, but she is progressing.” The
best news is that this pup is now approaching the people in her world (with
a big happy smile face from one of her handlers). “She is still cautious,
but has taken big steps to coming out of her shell. She is learning how to
play, and at times, will wag her tail (when with strangers).” We’re proud of
you, Maggie!
Field Trip Alert (from HOPE volunteer Cindy) - I took Maggie
out on a field trip this Saturday and although she wasn't thrilled about the
idea at the beginning, she ended up having a lot of fun! We went to
visit an old friend and fellow "parolee," Mason. Mason and Maggie
thoroughly enjoyed each other's company and had a great time walking the
trail behind Mason's house. Maggie loved to romp in the grass and
pounce on the weeds. She was even comfortable meeting and greeting
Mason's dad. She was a gem in the car and only had a tough time on the
walk in and out of the prison. For her first time out, she did great.
I was so glad that she had a good time. We even practiced some of her
training and she was more than happy to show off her skills in exchange for
some treats!

Week 4
“What a sweetheart Maggie is!!” Her handlers report that she loves the
attention she receives in their cell and is starting to grasp some of her
basic commands. Even though she still has fear issues that her handlers are
trying to help her overcome, “Maggie is starting to show more curiosity in
people. She will sometimes go up to strangers and smell them”. Her handlers
are very happy about this progress! From day two, Maggie accepted her pack
mates. “She is getting along swell with all of the other dogs in the
program. She and Jada had a blast playing together this week. They are
becoming fast friends.” Of course, this pup and her handlers formed a
special bond early on. They report that “the highlight of our day is when we
get back to the cell after Maggie hasn’t seen us in a while. She jumps up
and wags her tail to let us know that she missed us. What a great dog she
is. We can’t wait until someone gives her the good home she deserves after
all she went through!!”

Week 3
“Maggie is a beautiful dog, and she’s really coming out of her shell. When
she is fearful, having the other dogs around really helps her. She plays
well with all of them.” Maggie is sitting with ease, and is staying at the
door and going directly into her crate after being outside without being
told to do so.” This pup is also opening up to other humans on the block,
which a is very good thing! In fact, some of the other handlers say that she
resembles “Santa’s Little Helper on the Simpsons,” which is a compliment,
considering all that he went through in his life! This pup really shows
affection towards her handlers. “Maggie does a little dance for us if she
hasn’t seen us in a while.” Keep feeling safe, and letting your true
personality come out, little girl!

Week 2
Her handlers report that “our little Maggie is getting better. She is still
very fearful, which is understandable considering all she has been through,
poor girl!!” Even though she’s still scared of her new surroundings, Maggie
made “several breakthroughs this week.” She now sits and lays down on
command! Her handlers again reported that Maggie feels most comfortable in
the company of her pack mates. She got to play with Ike, Bo, and Leah this
week. Like last week, her handlers noted that she seems to almost lose her
fear when she’s around them. In fact, she lets other handlers come near her
when she’s with her doggie pals, so “we have been using that to our
advantage.” This pup is really warming up to her handlers. One of them
happily reports that “she even licked my face for the first time today! We
are going to continue to give Maggie love and pets so she gets better (at
trusting humans again). We love her already, which is easy to do when you
look into her eyes!!” We’re very proud of you, sweet Maggie!

Week 1
Maggie’s handlers welcomed her into their lives last Sunday, and were
immediately smitten with her. “We just got our little Maggie. What a
beautiful puppy she is! Unfortunately, she is severely fearful, so we are
taking our time getting her trust by letting her come to us on her own. She
is coming along slowly.” Maggie already surprised her handlers. They
introduced her to another new dog in the program, Ike, and “she was running
with him on her second day here. She is such a sweetheart, and it was like
she wasn’t even aware of her fear for a good half hour. Hopefully, soon
Maggie will gain her confidence and then the fun will start for her!!!”

UPDATE
8-21-11
Maggie enrolled herself in the HOPE Program today. She had a terrible start
to life. She was terribly neglected and nearly starved to death.
But, this little girl is a survivor. Despite her rough beginnings, she
is still trying her best to rediscover the joys of being a dog. As you
might expect, Maggie will need some time to overcome her fears and learn to
trust people again. Things will only get better for her from here so
stay tuned. Maggie is
a beautiful, one year old Hound mix who is available for adoption through
Furry
Friends Network.
