ADOPTED!!!

Week 11
Maggie went to her forever home on Friday! This sweet girl will be missed by
all who came in contact with her! We know that she will flourish in her new
home, and we wish her and her new family a long and loving life together!
Week 10
Maggie had a good week! Although she still has good and bad days with her
noise issues, she went to the dayroom this week, and interacted with some of
those "scary" strangers. She's still shy around those she doesn't know, but
she'll tentatively give them a sniff. She still isn't sure when someone
unfamiliar to her wants to give her a pet. Her handler says that once she
DOES get to know you, she'll trust you and interact with you. She has gotten
to know the other handlers, and does well with them!
Maggie's handler thinks that she's at a point where she can move on and
start a new life in a forever home. He thinks that in a home-setting, she
won't have to deal with the noises of the prison, and that will be good for
her. She will need a home that can devote a lot of attention to her at
first, until she feels comfortable in her new surroundings. It may be a plus
if your home has another dog, because she looks forward to going out in the
yard and playing with the other dogs...especially Razor this week!
Paws crossed, Maggie!
Week 9
Maggie has a ball playing with the big dogs. She loves to let them
chase her and then turn a sharp corner and race to the other end of the
yard. She's tough to catch and she knows it! She and Sadie used
to take turns letting Oliver chase them and Maggie was always in control of
the choreography of the chase. Now that Sadie has found a home, she
spends much of her time teaching Mitzie how to take Sadie's place in the
game. She absolutely adores Oliver and Ozzy and will play with them
for hours. She also discovered a new love this week...roast beef!
Maggie hasn't been particularly motivated by any kind of food...until now.
She did all of her basic commands and even tossed in a "roll over" just to
get more of the delicious roast beef!!
Week 8
Maggie made a new friend this week in Ozzy. We don't think she
expected to like such a big, goofy boy, but it turns out they had quite a
lot of fun together. Maggie is really starting to come into her own
and she's beginning to look at the world around her with more curiosity than
fear. It is so neat to see her starting to come out of her shell and
rely on the confidence and stability of her human friends to help her build
her own. She is just as sweet as any dog you'd ever like to meet and
she's quite a hit among both the staff and inmates here. As with the
rest of the Eskie Brigade, she tends to enjoy evening meals more than any
other time of day. She truly enjoys the quiet and loves to explore
when the cell block has settled in for the night. Keep up the good
work, Maggie!
Week 7
Maggie had a good week! She surprised her handler in the doggie yard! He had
been trying to get her to play with her toys. One day, he dropped one of his
gloves, and Maggie took off with it, and had a ball! So, they now have a new
game...fetch the glove!
She's relaxing more in the doggie yard. If someone walks by, she'll go up to
the fence, but she's still a little shy about accepting pets from strangers.
Because of the soggy weather this week, she didn’t get a chance to get out
in the doggie yard as much as usual, so she had to go to the day room. She
didn’t like the noise, but she didn’t pace as much as she did before when
she went there!
Maggie's eating habits still fluctuate. Her handler doesn't know if it might
be because of the weather this week, and her inability to run off some
energy and need some extra calories. He'll keep an eye on her, but, she
still has managed to gain a little weight this week! Maggie, Sadie and
Oliver got to run together, and "played nice" with each other! Maggie’s
handler thinks that she wouldn't have any problems with bigger dogs in her
family. As far as “humans” are concerned, Maggie’s handler says that
once she’s around people she knows, she will allow them to pick her up and
pet her. She kicks back and lies next to him for some quiet one-on-one time
and snuggles! He knows that once she’s comfortable in her surroundings,
Maggie will make a great house pet! We hope that you find your forever
home soon, Maggie!
Week 6
Maggie is finally eating regularly and beginning to put on some much needed
weight. As it turns out, the magic trick was coating the bottom of her
food bowl with a thin layer of peanut butter. It was just the
motivation she needed to discover the joy of two meals a day!
Nowadays, she has a little extra spring in her step and it's so nice to see!
Maggie also had to fend of a burglar...of sorts. While she was out
doing her morning socialization exercise on the block, Sadie ran into her
"house" and stole her favorite bone. Sadie hightailed it back to her
own "house" with the stolen goods before Maggie could catch her.
Maggie didn't give up that easily though. She swiped her bone back
when Sadie was distracted and on and on the game goes! This bunch is
just full of giggles!!
Week 5
Maggie is making progress! Although she still needs to master eating during
the day, her handler noticed that she LOVES peanut butter...and oatmeal! Of
course, she also gets her regular dog food. Maggie now understands sit and
stay, but sometimes she loses her focus if there is a lot going on around
her. But, she’s doing much better! Her handler is patiently working
with her to make her feel more relaxed in her environment. She feels a lot
of comfort in the doggie yard and she loves to run with Sadie and Harley!
She’s also warming up to Tina! Her handler is hoping that someone will see
the beauty in this sweet gal and have the patience and love to accept this
little one into their home and into their hearts. He’ll keep working hard to
make that happen in just a few weeks!
Week 4
Maggie is coming along nicely. She likes the evenings the best because
it's nice and quiet on the block. That's the time when she and her
handler get the most training time in. She is getting very good at sit
and stay when she isn't bothered by unexpected noises. During the day,
she loves to be out in the dog yard and her recall is really starting to
improve. Something new this week...Maggie has discovered that she can
comfort herself just by heading into her crate with her blanket and toys.
She used to do a lot of pacing when she was worried or frightened, but as of
this week she has started to calm herself. Her handler reports that
over the last several days, Maggie will just stroll into her crate when she
gets worried and snuggle in with her special toys. When, she feels
comfortable again, she strolls right back out and snuggles in with her
handler. He spends a lot of time socializing her out on the cell
block. He carries her at the beginning to help her build her
confidence and then later lets her down onto the floor so that she can greet
new friends on her own. She's been gaining more and more confidence
approaching new friends and it's been a wonderful transition to watch!!
Week 3
Maggie is just a doll and is slowly starting to break hearts all over the
prison. She's been working hard on her new skills, the most difficult
of which is walking on a leash. It's not that she pulls, but she does
tend to circle around her handler when she gets nervous causing a very
precarious situation for the handler who now has the leash completely
wrapped around his ankles! Her handler has started pausing anytime she
starts to panic, giving her a little encouragement and waiting for her to
decide to move forward. She has already learned that walking in
circles means in takes a very, very long time to get to her friends in the
dog yard and we're seeing a great deal of improvement in her leash skills
just from that one little maneuver. She is beginning to approach
people on her own and even taking treats from new friends. She's also
getting more and more comfortable being held by both her regular handlers
and new handlers! Good girl, Maggie!
Week 2
Maggie has had a terrific week. She and Sadie have been having so much
fun playing together. They let Harley join in too, but the girls are
definitely the best of friends. She's getting a new harness this week
that will be nice and soft around her belly which we hope will help her feel
a little safer on her walks. Maggie has already learned to sit, stay
and come this week. One of her handlers kept her busy at the far end
of the dog yard, while her other handler walked to the opposite end.
As soon as he called her, she came bounding over and made quite a fuss to
see him. She has started to approach people without encouragement from
her handlers and pretty soon we hope she'll be brave enough to accept some
treats from her new friends. Way to go, Maggie!
Week 1
Maggie faced so many of her fears this week we lost track of the count.
But, she did it all with grace and a boldness that surprised us all.
She has such a sweet nature and it's hard not to instantly fall in love with
her. She made friends quickly with her old pals from the barn and she,
Harley and Sadie have enjoyed playing together since her arrival. In
just a few days, she mastered the whole idea of housetraining and now we're
beginning to work on building her confidence back up so that she can be
comfortable in her on skin again.
UPDATE
Maggie is heading to the big house today, October 22nd.
She is a three year old American Eskimo Dog who just needs a confidence boost
and some patient training to let her know that her life starts getting
better from here. She is
an adorable girl and is available for adoption through
Francisvale Home
for Smaller Animals. Stay tuned
for her updates.
