UPDATE
Lucie went to her forever home on Tuesday! Although this spirited pup will be missed by every person and every dog who had the pleasure to meet her, we know that she'll love romping and playing with her almost-twin sister, Lulu! We would also venture a guess that she'll also love finding places in her new home to take a look at herself! Hopefully, she won't think that she's seeing double if Lulu joins her in front of a mirror! Enjoy your new family, sweet Lucie!

Week 6
Lucie has made a complete recovery and is as playful as ever.  "She is a fun and energetic dog!" This week, Lucie worked on her patience exercises. Her handler reports that it's a challenge to get her to stay and wait in high-traffic areas sometimes, but "Lucie is getting it." He also says that Lucie's recalls are very good! The recall skill is one that all of our handlers particularly focus on for their dogs' safety. Lucie didn't realize that her handler was reinforcing the command, however, she learned a new game this week. One of her other handler pals helped with her training this week and Lucie had great fun running back and forth between her handler's and her buddy's cells! It was as if she was thinking "are you calling my name? Here I come!" This pup got to spend some time out in the yard with Chi Chi and one of our new handlers. She did very well with him! Lucie thinks that the new kid, Todd, is as cute as her handler does, and has accepted him into her pack. Lucie "loves everybody." It seems that Lucie also continues to love seeing herself. Her handler says that "she is fascinated by her reflection lately and knows all of the places to see the 'other' Lucie. It's funny to see." We're glad that you're feeling better, little Diva!

Week 5
Lucie didn't feel well this week, but her handler said that "she's a trooper." Lucie was a calm girl while receiving the special care that her handler gave her. She also did really well at the vet's office. Her handler reports that Lucie is very good about taking her meds (with a dab of peanut butter). After just a couple of days, Lucie was back to her normal self! She now wants to run, jump and play, but her handler is still keeping her calm to make sure that she really is okay...another testament to how our handlers feel about their dogs. "This week started off a little slow, but Lucie is back to her happy, playful self. All is well."

Week 4
Lucie has made wonderful progress in the past month. Instead of being a shy pup, she's now a playful little girl who craves attention. Lucie gets really excited to see the new people and the new things in her world. Her handler has been reinforcing all of her commands, but has been concentrating on her "Lucie come." He wants her to understand that no matter where she is or what she's doing (like playing with her bud, Bronko), she needs to obey him when he tells Lucie to come to him. Since Lucie knows that she'll get a treat when she listens to her handler, she comes running to him for her reward! Lucie showed a cute-funny side of her personality this week. She sat and stared at her handler's TV when it wasn't turned on. Thinking she wanted to watch it, he turned the TV on, but Lucie walked away from it. When her handler turned the TV back off, she went back to staring at it. After a few minutes, it dawned on him that Lucie could see herself in the screen! "I think she may be a little vain. I bet she would be funny around a mirror!" You're a sweetheart, Lucie!

Week 3
Week three and Lucie continues to do great in the program! She doesn't hesitate to approach strangers. "It's like all of her fear is gone." Since she's gone from scared and timid to excited and active, Lucie's handler has been giving her a lot of play time in the yard to help her burn off her energy. "She is much easier to work with after a good romp." Lucie worked on her "stays" this week. She did a fine job when her handler was within eyesight, but "out of sight is out of mind. We are working on it." Lucie still barks sometimes in her cell, but not as much as she did when she first entered the program. "In a home environment I doubt that she would bark much, if at all." We're so proud of how you have blossomed little girl!

Week 2
Lucie's handler reports that she "has made wonderful progress this week." Her initial shyness has all but disappeared and she's eager to experience the new things in her world. "It's like she came out of her shell overnight." Her handler has taken Lucie all over the tier and the yard. She's found that the strangers and the stairs she encounters inside and the vehicles that she encounters outside of the fence are not to be feared! Now that he has her attention, Lucie's handler is concentrating on her commands. "She still needs some work on the basics, but she's willing to learn for a treat." Lucie barks at times when she hears certain people or dogs pass her cell.  It's a "hey, I'm in here" kind of yelp, but she stops and lays down when her handler says "no" or "Lucie" to her. This pup has gone from one extreme to the other in a good way! Two weeks ago, she had to be coaxed out from under her handler's bed. Now, she is bouncing around her space wanting to play with him. "I never thought I would have to teach her to settle down." All of the handlers in our program have taken some time to help Lucie adapt to life at the prison, which has been great for both her and her handler. Since she's Bronko's new girlfriend, he and his handler have become the "dynamic duo" in Lucie's eyes! "Everything is just peachy. Lucie is happy and healthy and I just love her. She is really cool and so sweet."

Week 1
Lucie's handler says that her first week at the prison overall went well! She's admittedly timid and scared with all of the new sounds and routines she's been experiencing, but she's only been in the program a few short days. Lucie barks out of fear of the unknown, but both her handler and another one of our handlers are helping her to learn that she is safe in her new world. Lucie is food-motivated. Her handler has been giving treats to Lucie's block mates to help socialize her by greeting people for a tasty morsel. "Lucie loves that." Her handler thinks that Lucie will do well in the program. She'll be concentrating on her homework next week. In the meantime, she has shown her handler that she bonds quickly to her person and is very loyal. "When I get back from work, she tries to lick me to death!" We're looking forward to hearing about your progress, Lucie!

UPDATE - 4/2/10
Lucie headed to the big house today to get started on her training.  Lucie is a wounded little soul who just needs a crash course in the basics.  She is a great dog with loads of potential  Lucie is a one year old shepherd mix and is available for adoption through Francisvale Home for Small Animals
