ADOPTED!!!
Week 11
Miss Lily still works on her training, and improves each day! She is going
up to strangers now, and is accepting a pet and a "you're so cute, Lily!"
from them! Lily went to her forever home on Friday! Her handlers got her all
"spiffed up" for her new journey! Although they'll miss her big brown eyes
and loving temperament, they know that this little girl will blossom with
her new forever family!
Week 10
Miss Lily ventured out of the prison this week! She made a trip to a dog
park, and got a little exercise to boot! Miss Lily was afraid of her new
surroundings, but once she got to the park, she calmed down! Of course, she
was VERY happy to see her handlers when she got back to her space!
Lily and Cosmo have bonded, and are playing with toys together and having
fun with their "tugs games"! The two of them are really getting along
famously!
If you have been reading Lily's diaries, there's obviously something in her
past that always points to fear and her ability to meet new situations
head-on. While she warmed up to Cosmo this week, she's still fearful of
complete human strangers. That having been said, her handlers say that she
is a sweet, loving dog who is only looking for a home that is patient with
her fears. They think that Miss Lily will be fine once she bonds with her
new family. Her handlers just love her! Can you love her too?
Weeks 8 & 9
Miss Lily feels so comfortable in her surroundings at the prison, she
doesn't want to leave! A couple of the HOPE volunteers attempted to take her
on an outing to meet some new folks one day. As soon as Lily got outside her
comfort zone, she "froze in fear" and wouldn't go any farther! Once she got
back to her cell and her handler, she was fine.
When Lily is able to be adopted, her new family will find her very loyal and
loving! Her handlers know that she'll be afraid for awhile, and it may take
some time for her to listen to her commands. When she first came into the
program, one of her handlers talked to her softly and petted her gently to
calm her. He still does this, and it works so well, that Lily just falls
asleep while enjoying the softness and gentleness of her handler's voice and
touch.
Even though Lily is still a shy southern belle, her handlers love her and
HOPE she finds a forever home!
Week 7
Lily is doing great and is learning new things every day! Her handlers have
been working on her "sit-stay", and she's able to stay for a few minutes
when one of them walks out of her sight! Lily is still trying to find her
comfort zone when she's around strangers, and when she hears some noises
that are "startling" to her, but she's improving in these areas each week!
Lily is becoming braver when she is in her cell and knows the door is
locked. Her handlers still give her the "no bark" command when strangers
come to the door, because she still tends to protect their space with a woof
or a small growl. When the cell door is open, Lily likes to sit at one of
her handler's feet and watch what's happening in her world...he thinks she's
a good watch dog!
Lily craves attention and would rather be in her crate or on one of her
handler's laps than be outside. To Lily, "outside" means "potty time!"
Lily's favorite spot is one of her handler's bed. She'll "bribe" him with
her chew toys, bones and "stuff" so he'll give her the go-ahead to join him.
When she does get the go-ahead, she ignores everything that she has
delivered to his bed, curls up and goes to sleep!
Lily's handlers think that she's a very good dog, and hope that someone will
adopt her and enjoy the love she shows when she knows that a person is also
her friend.
Week 6
Lily is doing just fine! Although she still shows some shyness at times, she
gets along well with the other people on the block and the other dogs! She
adjusts to her new situations with more ease! Lily is definitely a warm
weather pup! When it's cold, she'll only go outside for a minute. Lily's
handler says that it's funny to watch her dart out to do her business and
then dart back inside! Lily loves attention! She'll lay on her handler's lap
for hours! She is a wonderful, well-mannered dog, and doesn't have a mean
bone in her body! Lily has started to gently bark a bit when someone comes
to give her or her handler a visit, but will stop when she hears her "no
bark" command!
Lily is a super companion and will make a great pet for anyone who chooses
to adopt her! Her handler thinks that she would love kids because of the
special attention that she would receive. Lily can be trusted because she
has a very submissive personality. Her handler says that she is ready for a
warm and loving home and that she promises to be good! Here's hoping
that your handler's wish comes true for you, Miss Lily, and that you find
your forever home soon!
Week 5
Miss Lily is doing great! She now responds to commands [without treats]
better than most people listen! Although she's still a bit timid, Lily it
going up to strangers [without treats]! She continues to be a bit startled
by loud noises, but she's mastering her fear of crinkly bags! Lily is
spending more time outdoors now that the weather is warmer, but she still
prefers to be indoors.
Lily's handlers say that she really is a joy! She'll sit at their feet for
hours! She loves affection and will follow them everywhere they
go...on-leash or off-leash! Her handlers say that she is a wonderful dog!
They love when she gets excited and smiles, "and her big brown eyes make you
just want to hug her." As much as Lily's handlers would miss her, they feel
that she's ready to be "paroled" to a loving and caring home. "She deserves
it!" We're so proud of your progress, Miss Lily!
Week 4
Lily is really coming along! She is easily obeying most of her commands,
playing well with the other dogs, and is even approaching strangers who are
carrying a treat! She still doesn't like the sound of crinkling plastic, but
she'll bravely go up to people, and follow her handlers in situations that
are "scary" for her. Her handlers think that she's a very smart dog because
she learns new things quickly! Lily likes water, so she's good about getting
a bath! She also basks in the attention she gets when her handlers dry her
off!
Lily gets excited when her handlers say, "gotta pee!" She knows it's time to
go outside to do her duty! She prefers coming right back inside when she's
done, but will stay out in the yard if her handlers are there to play with
her. Lily is not shy about letting her handlers know when she wants to go
back to her space, however!
Overall, her handlers think that Lily is ready for a good home! She will
make someone or some people a faithful companion, and Lily will give joy to
whomever adopts her! You're doing great, Miss Lily!
Week 3
Lily is coming along quite well! She is slowly overcoming her fears, and
will now walk up to people to give them a sniff! She will let most of the
other handlers pet her, and will take treats freely! Lily is still startled
by things that are unknown to her [like jingling keys, crinkly potato chip
bags and booming garbage can lids]. In time, she will learn her new
environment.
Lily's handlers think that she's an indoor kind of gal. She will go outside
to play and for potty breaks, but she'll whine a bit when she's had enough
of the great outdoors! Lily has adapted well to her routine! She's learned
when she can go outdoors, and she knows that it's crate-time when her
handler gets dressed for work.
Lily listens to her commands very well in her "space" because it's her
comfort zone. She still needs to work on her commands in "crowds", but her
handlers are working on it! Lily loves attention and will "nose" her
handlers often for a good pet! Once Lily has bonded with a person, she will
stay close and follow without a leash. Her handlers think that she's a very
smart girl! Keep coming out of your shell, little one!
Week 2
Lily is slowly overcoming her fears. She's come a long way with tolerating
strange noises [like those scary loud doors]. She's okay if she sees the
doors close. Lily doesn't like to be surprised by sounds that come from a
source she doesn't see. Her issues with strangers are improving as well!
Lily will let most of the other handlers touch her, and will take treats
from them. She's still a little leery about the people outside of her circle
of friends, but she's relaxing more with them after just a few minutes! Her
time between being scared and calming down is getting shorter!
Lily knows her first name and will come to her handlers when called. She's
doing well with her commands, but will "freeze up" when frightened. She's
still hesitant about new things, but her handlers are working to introduce
her to more new situations and people each day to help allay her fears. She
also doesn't like the cold! She whimpers when she's out in the yard in 30
degree temperatures. Since she's a southern belle, her handlers think that
she prefers to be warm (like the comfort of one of her handler's beds)!
Overall, Lily made good progress this week!
Lily did give one of her handlers a scare, but it turned out to be okay! He
was eating bologna and tossing a few pieces to Lily. He took her out for a
quick potty break, and when they came back to their space, he noticed that
Lily was licking one of her paws. She was reluctant to let her handler check
what was wrong, and he thought that Lily may have somehow hurt herself. He
convinced Lily to let him see her paw, and at first glance her handler
thought that it was an open wound. Upon closer inspection, he realized that
she had a piece of bologna wedged between the pads of her paw! He thought he
had "broken" his dog, and as it turned out, she was only "hoarding" her
treat! With relief, he laughed out loud at Lily's antics! You're
coming around, little girl!
Week 1
Lily is new to the program, and she's still timid and fearful of the new
people and situations she encounters. After only a short time, however,
she's found that one of her handler's beds is a VERY good comfort zone!
Lily knows her “sit,” “down” and “paw” commands. Right now, she only likes
to be caged when she's calm and comfortable. Lily tends to not listen when
she's frightened, but at this point in her life, that's understandable. She
has made some progress as she adapts to her new space! Her handlers say that
she's a very smart dog who understands what they're saying and expect of
her...she just needs some confidence to do what they ask her to do.
Like Mitzie, Lily only eats at night or when she's alone. She'll take treats
from one of her handler's hands, but she's not food motivated...especially
if you're offering her cheese! Relax, little one! You’ll be okay!
UPDATE - 1/25/09
After a very long wait, Lily is finally getting started in the HOPE Program
today. We hope that this program is just what she needs to become the
confident, happy dog we know she can be. Stay tuned... Lily is available for adoption
through Cocker
Spaniel Adoption Center.
