Week 11
“Lena has opened up a lot since she’s been her.  She plays off-leash, but doesn’t stray far.”  Her handlers gave her a good time chasing and retrieving a soccer ball this week.  Lena also loves playing with her handlers in their cell.  If they stop and ignore her, “she makes some funny noises trying to get our attention so she can continue playing.”  We HOPE that you can be playful in your forever home soon, Lena!

Update - Lena headed back to her rescue this week for some much needed R & R. She's patiently waiting for her turn to be adopted. Come see this beautiful girl and see what makes her so special to everyone who has met her.

Week 10
Lena’s handlers report that she continues to make progress!  One of them reported that “I had her off-leash running in the grass behind the block.  There were no worries about her running off.  She stayed close and took a liking to the toys.” This pup was also very friendly when her handlers parallel walked her with Ruby and Harley.  One of her handlers also reports that “she almost conquered giving her paws up” this week.  He has also been having strangers do certain commands with her, and “she does well with meeting new people at her own pace.”  Lena got to meet the new kid, Thunder, and her handlers didn’t see any signs that she was afraid of him.  In fact, she did very well with the introductory sniffing!  “All in all, Lena is a good dog who needs a loving home.  Lena is your girl!  Stay tuned…”

Week 9
Lena had another good week!  One of her handlers reports that she learned to give him her paw on command.  He’s still working with her on some other issues (like loose-leash walking and separation anxiety), but “she’s a little learner at a time.”  Step by step, Lena!  As those of you know you follow the website, and for those of you who are first-time readers, there is a yard behind the block where the handlers potty, train and socialize their dogs.  They are also responsible for maintaining it.  One of Lena’s handlers volunteered to mow the grass this week, she decided to bring her with him.  “She was very playful.  While I was cutting the grass, she would do a play-bow and when I chased her, she would run across or around the yard.”  There’s a little shack in the yard, and Lena had a very good time playing hide and seek with her handler.  “If I went around it one way, she’d sneak around the other way.  When I finally got close, she’d run really fast.”  Keep up the good work, Lena!

Week 8
Lena had quite a turn-around this week!  Her handlers say that “she really came out of her shell like something crazy!”  That’s a very good thing, little girl!  Lena has really taken not only to her handlers, but Ruby’s handlers as well.  “Her tail goes a mile a minute when she sees them, and she feels more comfortable than ever.  Lena gives paw every once in a while, but only with certain people.”  This pup is also doing very well with her sit, down paw commands, as long as there aren’t any distractions around her.  She also loves to play, and is very treat-oriented.  “If you want a loveable, dog, look no further.  Lena is your girl.”

Week 7
Lena’s handlers report that she’s still adjusting, but she’s “getting more comfortable with coming out of the cell and being around different people.  She’s also getting better at listening to her commands.”  Good girl!  One of Lena’s handlers writes that “I think it’s really cute that she uses her paws to form a pillow to lay on with almost anything soft enough to find and use.”  Here’s to pillows and a lot of love in your forever home, sweet Lena!

Week 6
Although “Ms.Lena” can sometimes still get distracted while training, her handlers gave her gold stars for grasping some of her commands!  Last week after training, Elliott came up to her in the doggie yard.  She ignored him at first, but then started sniffing him.  Their handlers had them in a dog run together while on-leash, and they did very well together!  “Lena had a good week.  Stay tuned for more on Ms. Lena!”

Week 5
Lena had a better than average week. She actually ventured out onto the tier for some training exercises and her handlers were very proud of her. She was able to hold a sit-stay command at one end of the tier while her handler walked clear down to the other end. When he called to her, she came running and once she reached him she dropped right into a sit - perfecto! Lena also decided that she too likes to play with the half-inflated soccer ball. She and her handler played a good game of fetch and chase with the ball and Lena thoroughly enjoyed herself - tail wags and all. Lena is a good girl who will much happier in a homeof her own. She's doing her part by learning all of her new skills. Now, she needs you to your part and give her a place to be safe and happy. Open your heart to Lena today!

Week 4
Lena spent time working on meeting new people this week. She can still be a little “skittish and scared,” but she’s doing better.  She also is tolerating the other dogs in her life more than she did before.  Lena also got plenty of exercise.  “She likes the dog yard because she can run freely without a leash.  When Lena wants attention, she rubs up against us like a cat would do.  It’s funny and heartwarming at the same time.  When we’re sitting on the bed, she will walk in between our legs like a figure eight.  It’s great!”  Keep up the good work, little girl!

Week 3
“Lena had a great week.  She is slowly gaining more confidence around strangers and the other dogs.”  Lena did well with her loose leash parallel walking with Kelsey and Jackie this week.  She also got kudos from her handlers for her sit, stay, wait, watch me, and touch commands.  “We got Lena to lay down, but we’re not sure if she will do it anywhere outside of the cell.”  It’s only week three, and we’re proud of you, little girl!  As her handlers predict, “stay tuned for more great news from Lena!”

Week 2
Lena’s handlers say that although she’s still new to the program, “she is slowly getting comfortable, and is starting to adjust to her environment.”  Just a few days ago, this pup “did really well with parallel walking with Jackie.  She is starting to open up and play now – before, she didn’t want to play at all.  Lena is a very nice dog.”  Lena has mastered her sit command and once her handlers find the magic bullet to hold her attention (ie. cheese or bacon), she will take off with the rest of her training. Keep adjusting, little girl.  You’re safe now, and your handlers only want the best for you….a forever home!

Week 1
Although her handlers report that they have some issues to deal with (like all of the handlers do in the HOPE program when they meet their new charge), they report that “she is definitely a great and beautiful dog.”  Lena warmed up to her handlers in just a few days, and loves playing tug-of-war and the “find it” game with them.  Being a new member on the block, this pup still has to find her friends in the pack, but she has already found new-found friends with her cellies.  One of them writes that “Lena loves to give kisses.  I’m not talking about one or two kisses.  I’m talking about 30 around your whole face.  She washes me up kissing me, letting me know that’s it’s time to go outside or that she’s awake.”  Lena still has a way to go with her training, but we’re so proud of hearing about her first step forward in the program.

UPDATE 6-24-12
Lena is headed to the big house today. This young lady needs a second chance. She was surrendered to her rescue, along with her six puppies because her family was moving and decided she wasn't invited along for the trip.  Despite that. she has tried very hard to be a good girl and has learned a great deal. She continue her learning streak now in the prison program. Lena is a beautiful, two year old Boxer piT Bull mix who is available for adoption through A Tail to Tell .  Stay tuned for next week's update.
