UPDATE - 8/17/08
Kizzie has returned to her foster home and the reports from her foster dad
are nothing short of wonderful. For an experienced Eskie person,
Kizzie will make a great companion. She's continuing the training that
she began at the prison including interacting politely with other dogs,
accepting attention from strangers and following directions without a lot of
backtalk! She continues to make good progress and she's definitely
heading in the right direction. We're really proud of her and glad to
hear that she's coming along so well!

Week 10
A tough break for Kizzie. She was really starting to show some good
progress, but a setback caused her to get bounced from the big house this
week. Stay tuned for updates as she continues her training in her
foster home.

Week 9
Kizzie had another week of tolerance building...tolerance for the world
around her that is. She learned that there are sometimes boundaries to
playtime and she handled the new structure very well. She is still not
fond of having strangers in her space and that is something we'll continue
to work on, but little steps are what we focus on and she's had a few steps
forward this week.

Week 8
Kizzie had a tough week with a few setbacks. Many of her issues didn't
surface until she'd been with us at the jail for several weeks, but they're
no longer a mystery now. Kizzie is still under the impression
that she is the boss of everyone so her team of handlers is working very
diligently with patience, structure and consistency to teach her otherwise.
Kizzie must have ruled her previous home with an iron fist, but we hope
she'll soon learn that there's no place for that anymore. We hope that
she's in the last throes of her "queen bee" phase. Once she gets past
it, it shouldn't take much to get her up to snuff and ready for adoption
because she's very, very bright. Stay tuned for more updates on her
progress and keep rooting for her as she begins to find herself a new place
in the world.

Week 7
Kizzie has made some good strides this week. She's getting used to the
idea that the rules are the rules regardless of who is holding the end of
the leash. She was a very good HOPE ambassador to a group of visitors
who were touring the prison last week. She greeted each one and even
allowed some belly rubs from the strangers. It was a good start to her
"boot camp" and we're all pulling for her. She'll be working on the
same sorts of skills this week including leash walking with all of the
handlers, tricks, giving up food and toys and following directions.
Good luck, Kizzie!!

Week 6
Kizzie has entered a sort of boot camp over the last week. She's been
behaving like a perfectly typical Eskie since she arrived, which would be
fine if she was already in a home that adored the persnickety habits, moody
ups and downs and self-worship. But Kizzie, through no fault of her
own, was left behind when her family moved away. You'd be a little
moody too if that happened to you. Regardless, it was time for Kizzie
to start pulling her weight. Thus, the boot camp began! So far,
she is really rising to the challenge. Kizzie adores her handler...to
a fault. She has actually started to guard him which is something that
we just can't have. So, her first challenge was to make friends with
every other handler on the team this week. So far, so good.
Everyone has been able to take her out her crate, take her for a walk and
place her back in her crate without much trouble. Sure, she
grumbles a little when she heads back in, but it's hard to take a nap after
you've been the belle of the ball all afternoon. On another positive
note, she was an absolute gem for the groomer this week. She was the
first one out to the Dirty Dog Mobile Makeover van and she got a fabulous
review from Annette, our master groomer! Way to go, Kizzie!

Week 5
Kizzie has homework this week. Her incredible cuteness will only get
her so far and it's definitely time to start adding some new skills to her
weekly routine. This week, she'll be working on allowing everyone into
her space. She always prefers her main handler, but the trouble with
that is that she has begun to guard him. To work through that, we'll
be helping to build her confidence so that she no longer feels that she'll
be left behind if she doesn't guard her person. After being abandoned
by the only family she's ever known it's not surprising that she wants to
guard what she feels is hers. But, there'll be no place for that in
her new life so it's time to get down to business. By the time she's
done, we have no doubt that she'll be making friends all over the cell
block. Good luck, Kizzie!

Week 4
Things have been going pretty smoothly for Kizzie since she started, but
we've begun to see some areas that need a little work. Kizzie can be a
little choosy about who may take things away from her so her handler will be
working with all of the other handlers this week to make that problem
completely disappear. We're also working on increasing her comfort
level with people petting her and being in her space for long periods of
time. Kizzie likes to control the timetable so they'll all be working
together this week to increase her comfort level. She has done so
incredibly well with all of her other training that we have no doubt these
two things will be a piece of cake for her!

Week 3
Kizzie had another fun week. She really enjoys the company of Steven
and Cole. She'll be heading out on the town on Saturday for a Meet &
Greet with her adoring public at Borders in Camp Hill from 11-2. She
is definitely one of those dogs who doesn't need much work...she just got a
raw deal in life. She's easy to get along with, eager to please, a
friend to other dogs and a loyal friend to you. She loves to play with
soft toys and is always up for a little game of tug. We love her
already and know that someone just right is waiting for her to wiggle into
their life. Is it you?

Week 2
Kizzie had a super fun week filled with lots of new and exciting things.
She has become quite a favorite and very much likes to talk until she gets
your attention. She loves to play with the other dogs and is proving
to be quite a rising star in her training classes. She's just a doll
and it's hard not to fall head over heels for her. This week, her
handler and the other members of the team will be working on helping her to
get more comfortable with people touching her feet. We're not sure
why, but she's a little funny about her toes. We should all be so
lucky that being funny about our toes is our worst character flaw!!

Week 1
Kizzie had so many new things to get acquainted with this week she had
trouble figuring out where to start. She made friends quickly with
Bella, Cole and Hanson and has become very popular with the inmates and
staff. She is very, very friendly and loves all of the attention she's
been getting. She's already doing very well with her training and
we're sure there will be lots of stories to tell about this little
sweetheart as we get to know her better. Stay tuned...
