“Joey is starting to do all of his commands with ease.” In fact, this pup got an “EXCELLENT!” on his homework page for his come/recall skills this week! “He loves to follow us around, and when we whistle or call his name, he comes a running!!” Joey also had a good time playing with Cam and Taavi last weekend. “He was running around Taavi with his ears flapping and they really both had a good time together.” Another good report from your handlers, little boy!
Field Trip Alert (as told by HOPE volunteer Margie) - I took Joey out yesterday for his first outing. Former hopedog and current HOPE volunteer Danner came along for some support and guidance - (as it turned out I think I was just brought along to provide transportation). Going out the front gate at the prison was pretty scary for Joey, but it wasn't terrible and once we got to the car, he jumped right in. We went to an open field over at the college and I put 30 ft leashes on each of them. Danner of course started exploring right away, but Joey hung back shaking a bit and didn't seem to know what to do. Danner kept looking back - as if saying "Joey, come on - this is so much fun!!" Soon Joey started following Danner EVERYWHERE. If Danner turned, Joey turned. If Danner went to check on something, Joey followed right along. When Danner sat and just sniffed the air, Joey sat down right beside him - it was too cute. Finally, Joey started exploring on his own, choosing his own direction. He really seemed to be enjoying himself. He was still shaking some and periodically I'd call him back and rub his chest for a while until he settled down. Despite his fear, I think he was having a good time. After we finished at the field, I put regular leashes on both dogs and we walked around campus. We passed several people and Joey didn't seem bothered by that except one time when a man approached too closely and actually reached down to pet - Joey jumped back. Going back in to the prison, Joey was much calmer. We kept setting off the alarm going thru the front gate so the CO on duty held both dogs while I went thru by myself. Joey was actually OK with that which I thought was really good since men in uniform are one of his fear triggers. Overall, thanks to my assistant, I think it was a good day for Joey.

Chi Chi Justin Rufus Rambo Maggie Rocky Cam Taavi Checkers Nash Joey’s handlers report that they had a great time teaching him to run between them this week. “We stand in different spots and call him back and forth. He enjoys it, and when he’s tired, he just flops where ever he pleases!” This pooch is also coming out of his shell more when it comes to all of the people in his world. “Joey is really warming up to others. He greets people he doesn’t know, but on his own terms. He has a big following here. Everyone wants to pet him. Most times, he allows it, but sometimes he ignores people like a grumpy old man.” Joey’s handlers’ tip to those who are thinking of adopting him is “he enjoys having his back end rubbed or scratched.” This boy is a keeper, and we HOPE that someone will enjoy his cute personality as much as his handlers (and his fans on the block) do!

Chi Chi Justin Rufus Rambo Maggie Rocky Cam Taavi Checkers Nash Joey had a good time in the snow we had recently. “At first he was hesitant to step in it, but after a lot of coaxing, he began to play and run around. We think Joey believes in his heart that he’s fast, but he’s not at all! He is happy though.” This pup continued to work on his basic training such as his sit/stays. “He also goes down and even army crawls on the floor, for treats of course!” Joey continues to make progress in his social skills by meeting more of the new people in his world each day, and he and Taavi “are really getting along and hanging out with each other.” His handlers say that “Joey loves to be petted and to cuddle at our feet. He’s a real laid back pooch. We are confident that he will make a great family member!!”

Chi Chi Justin Banshee Rufus Rambo Maggie Jada Rocky Cam Taavi Checkers Nash Joey’s handlers report that “he is a very handsome doggy. This week has been fun and entertaining with him. Although he is still a little fearful, he is coming out of his shell and is starting to go up to new people to investigate them.” Joey has already learned his down, stay, leave it and give paw commands, and he earned gold stars from his handlers for his recall skills! He also likes joining his handlers when they go for a run. “Joey is definitely looking forward to a loving family who will love him as much as he will love them!!”

Chi Chi Justin Banshee Rufus Rambo Maggie Jada Rocky Izzy Taavi Checkers Nash Joey’s handlers only had him in their lives a few days before writing their first journal about him. As we’ve mentioned previously, each dog goes into the prison with a description of the issues that the professional trainers feel should be the focus of the handlers’ attention to make their pups ready for their forever home. Although it’s still early, his handlers say that Joey hasn’t exhibited any of the behaviors that were listed on his report. His handlers report that “he is a little fearful, but he’s starting to open up to us. He lets us pick him up and he even sits and gives us his paw (when he feels like it [happy face]. He loves to be petted and to just lay around enjoying his new beds. We already are falling head over heels for Joey. He’s such a cute dog and he is a joy because he’s so mellow.” Welcome to the program! The video shows just how sweet you are, and how much your handlers care about you. Keep wagging your tail, Joey!
