Weeks 18
Jada is heading off to her foster home this week. She has been with us for about four and a half months now without any applications whish astounds us since she is such a lovable, sweet girl. Jada will get to attend lots of adoption events through her rescue, Furry Friends Network, now that she'll be living on the "outisde." So, please give this girl a helping paw and tell everyone you know about how wonderful she is and how much she would love having a home to call her own.

Weeks 16 & 17
Jada continued to work on her crate skills, her “watch me” techniques, as well as some new skills.  “We tested her patience by holding treats in our hand and making her wait before we gave them to her.  This was a non-verbal exercise, so no commands or noise could be used.  Jada picked up on this within the first 5 minutes.  She is an extremely intelligent dog.  She learns new things very fast.”  This pup is starting to warm up to Banshee, and “does very well with Taavi.  She also loves playing with Rocky in the dog runs in back of the block.”  If they get a little rough with each other, a simple “stop” from their handlers brings them to bay.  Jada was introduced to a racquetball last week.  “It’s funny to watch her try and catch it, but then I’ll accidentally miss it, and she goes crazy trying to follow it.”  Her handlers are still hoping that someone will make this special girl a part of their forever family.  “She’ll warm right up to you after 5 minutes of spending time with her.  She needs that special place to call home and to be loved."

Weeks 14 & 15
Jada is still having some good days and bad days with her being alone, “but for the most part, she’s doing good.”  Since her boyfriend, Petey, is living in his forever home, Jada’s handlers are having her play with Rocky, “and they do very well together.”  In fact, they had a play date one day last weekend!  The handlers threw a rubber football back and forth to each other while their pups chased it.  One of Jada’s handlers would sometimes miss it on purpose so one of the dogs could get it as a reward for chasing it.  He reports it was “a perfect time to work on their ‘out/give it’ commands, and both Jada and Rocky responded excellently. We also worked on some sit/stays and recalls at a distance of 30 feet or more.  After playing for about 2 hours and 30 minutes, both dogs were exhausted.”   Her handlers report “she is adorable when she’s laying on me.  She looks so peaceful.  She knows her commands well.   She’s high energy, but plays gently.  When we come back from work, Jada starts making all kinds of sounds until we pet her or play with her.  On your worst day, she just puts a smile on your face and makes your day a lot brighter.  Jada is a great dog. She is smart, and she just needs that special person to give her a place to call home forever.”  We couldn’t have said it better, sweet girl!

jadaWeeks 12 & 13
Jada and Petey spent their last two weeks together playing and practicing their sit/stay down commands in the big dog yard.  In fact, the pups did so well with the latter that one of the handlers timed them at over three minutes that they were in a sit/stay.  “That was pretty impressive considering other dogs and inmates were walking by. This type of performance earned both dogs that golden treat – ‘cheese!’”  Once Jada and Petey were done playing, both of them were exhausted.  Jada put her head on one of her handler’s shoulders and snored.  “She looked so cute.  Jada has completed her time with the Hope Program, knows all of her commands and is just waiting for someone to adopt her.  Add Jada to your Christmas wish list this year, because you’ll fall in love with her.”

Week 11
Jada had a great time playing with Petey this week.  In fact, her handlers say that she and Petey are girlfriend and boyfriend!  “They love to be around each other.  Both of them listen extremely well when playing. We and Petey’s handler worked to synchronize their ‘stays’ and ‘downs’ when they were together.  They obeyed when the cheese came out of our pockets. Cheese is gold to them.”  Jada and Rocky practiced parallel walking in the yard this week.  Since they get along so well, “it was good practice for their loose-leash skills.”  Her handlers want only the best for her.  “Jada is a great dog.  She’ll play for hours and after a brief nap, she’s ready to go again.  She will warm right up to you.  Hurry, and adopt Jada and see for yourself how wonderful of a dog she is."

Weeks 9 & 10
Jada got to meet Rocky recently.  Her handlers say that he looks like the dog “The Beast” from the movie Sand Lot, and is a gentle giant.  Jada and Rocky played well together.  Since he’s twice Jada’s size, she could only play with him for so long and then needed to take a break (in the form of an hour long nap)!  Jada also has been working with Banshee, and they do very well without reacting to each other.  Her handlers report that she has been doing very well with her commands, and they tested her being outside while off-leash.  “She never went more than 10 feet away from us.  Even with other dogs around, if you tell her to leave it, she will not bother with them and will focus on us.”  Jada loves to lay on one of her handler’s legs and watch TV with him.  He’ll turn on “Dogs 101” on Animal Planet and “she’ll bark at the TV when she hears the other dogs, almost like she’s trying to communicate with them.  It’s funny to watch! Now all she needs is for someone to give her a second chance at life.  Jada needs a place to call home forever and to be loved.”

jadaWeek 8
Jada worked on her out/give command this week by playing fetch with a soccer ball with her handlers. After about 25 or 30 minutes of chasing the ball and bringing it back to them, “she learned out/give pretty quickly.” This pup also continued to excel in her basic skills this week! Jada and Petey had another fun week together! “He doesn’t seem to mind Jada’s high energy, and is about twice her size. When they get playing and land on each other, they seem to tire each other out. They enjoy each other’s company.” Her handlers also report that Jada “gets along with just about anyone. All she needs is about five minutes to get to know you, and she’ll be attached in no time. Please adopt Jada!”

Week 7
Jada’s handlers are proud of the fact that she was able to find a new friend in Petey! “She loves playing with him, and they do well together. They also both listen well, when we tell them when play time is over.” Jada also has been around groups of people this week, so she continues to be more comfortable around them, with good results. This pup has “high energy,” so she needs “a lot of play to make her relax. She’s a great dog who needs to find a place to call her house.”

Week 6
Jada’s handlers gave her a refresher course on her basic commands this week, and awarded her gold stars for her abilities! This pup also got some training sessions with Ike and his handler. “We put them both in a sit or down at the same time. It helped them focus when they’re distracted.” Jada loved her time in the dog runs with her pal, Izzy this week! “Both have the same amount of energy, and they play well together. Izzy helps Jada release extra energy by keeping her running all of the time.” Of course, this pup also loves her quiet time with her handlers. One of them reports that “Jada enjoys relaxing on me when we’re watching TV, but for some reason, she tries to push me further and further off of the bed. She wants it all to herself.” We know there is someone out there who is willing to turn a blind eye to your bed manners, and give you a forever home, Jada!

Week 5
Jada’s handlers worked on having her around a group of people this week, and she did very well! Although she still has some trouble being in her crate by herself, her handlers have found a way for Jada to calm herself for a bit while they’re gone. This little girl “has her commands down, and her leave it is great.” She’s also great with her pack mates. “Jada loves playing with Ike. She’s also getting better with Banshee. We try to work with them as much as we can. Jada is a great dog who needs a place she can call home.” Is anyone willing to give her one? We and your handlers HOPE so, sweet pup!

Weeks 3 & 4
Jada continues to shine with her basic commands! She also is “doing very well meeting people and being in a group of them. She seems to be coming out of her shell, but every now and then, she gets scared. Treats bring her right back around.” Jada has recently shown some separation anxiety when left alone in her cell. Her handlers are trying to help her feel more comfortable by leaving a radio on for her (elevator music/country tunes) when they go about their day. They will continue to work with Jada to assure her that being alone in her crate is okay, and she doesn’t have to fear that they won’t return to her. One area of her training that this pup loves is her time with the other dogs in the program! “Jada and Maggie play very well together and love running around the yard with each other. The two of them run circles around one another in the dog yard for hours. This week, she got some interaction with Ike. Since they are the biggest dogs in the program right now, they can sometimes be a bit rough in their play, but they love it. This has been a great exercise for both Jada and Ike because of their personalities. They know when enough is enough, and then they lie next to each other and take a nap.” You’re going to be okay, Jada. Keep up the good work, little girl!

Week 2
Jada got to interact with Leah and Izzy this week. All of their handlers took them out to the big yard one night, and Jada “took a liking to Izzy right away. They were chasing each other around in circles. Leah was fine with her, as long as she had her beloved ball. The three of them got great exercise that night.” Jada got gold stars on her report card from her handlers on her sit, stay, down, with me and leave it skills this week. Her handlers also worked with Jada every day to be more comfortable with all of the new people in her world. “We asked 3-6 new people to come up to Jada and have them meet and greet her. So far, she has liked the attention, and has allowed everyone to pet her without being fearful.” We’re proud of your progress, sweet Jada!

Week 1
Jada’s handlers report that her first week in the program was “full of new sounds, smells and people.” This pup especially has some issues with all of the new humans in her world, so her handlers have been having different people treat her to help her overcome her fear. “So far, it seems to be working because she will now go up to people and smell them. This is something we work on every day with her.” Jada came into the program already knowing her sit, down, stay and some other commands. Her handlers will continue to reinforce those commands as well as to teach her some new ones once she gets more comfortable in her new surroundings. Jada has already found out that she can count on her canine friend, Maggie, for some fun time running in the dog runs behind the block! Although it was a week of transitions, her handlers say that it “didn’t take much time for her to warm up to us.” You’re still learning about life in prison, Jada, but we know that you’ll be fine in your handlers’ care!

UPDATE 9-10-11
Jada started her training today and she is off to a good start.  There was a great deal to take in on her first day, but she handled it all with ease from the lawnmowers to the painters to all the new people in her world.  Jada is a little shy and leery of strangers, but we've already learned that a handful of treats will open the door for her to become your friend.  She's a sweet girl who just needs to learn to trust again.   Jada is an pretty, three year old Black Lab mix who is available for adoption through Furry Friends Network.  Stay tuned for next week's update.
