As you can see, Miss Jackie has found the place she can call her forever home!  She’s not going to live at a “traditional” house.  Instead, she will be surrounded by people who will appreciate the love and comfort only she can bring to those around her.   In return, she will receive the attention and hugs that she so deserves.  Congratulations, Jackie!  We couldn’t be happier for you!

Week 37
Jackie moved to a different cell this week.  Her new handler reports that she is a fun-loving dog.  “Some may say that she has a flaw or imperfection because she doesn’t like a lot of other dogs.  But as people, we have imperfections so for Jackie to have one flaw, I’d say that she’s a good dog.  She loves to run and play fetch.  She also knows a lot of tricks.  How many tricks do you know?  Maybe Jackie can teach you one or two!”  We HOPE you can show off your repertoire of commands to a family in the near future, sweet girl!

Week 36
Jackie’s handler reports that she has been warming up to Guardian (the newbie in the program)!  Admittedly, it wasn’t smooth sailing at first.  Jackie’s handler and the other handlers in the program continue her interaction with all of the dogs so that she doesn’t see them as something bad in her world, and she is responding oh, so well. “Other than that, Jackie and I have been playing fetch and just like our time together.”

Week 35
Jackie had another good week!  She and her handler continued their exercise program, and worked on her “bow’ and “around” commands, which “she does very well now.”  Jackie also keeps getting better around the other dogs. She likes Thunder, and seems not as reactive with the other ones, which is great.  Jackie does well in just about everything we do, and I enjoy her a lot.  Hopefully, someone else will get to enjoy her soon too.”

Week 34
Jackie is adored by everyone at the jail. Noone can believe that this sweet girl has yet to be snatched up for adoption. She had a great week and continues to improve with her pack manners. This week, she took several walks with Brownie and they were very good together. She also had a playdate with Thunder who really brings out the best in everyone. Jackie continues to enjoy her games of fetch. It's a great chance for her and her handler to practice recall, give and take, all of her commands and her releases. She does great with all of it and loves the playtime outdoors. Jackie has made leaps and bounds since coming to the program several months ago and it's time for her to have a second chance at a happy ending. She has waited quite a long time and we're hoping she'll be in home in time for the holidays.

Field Trip Alert (as told by HOPE volunteer Ronay):Jackie did great at Messiah College today. She loves to walk the trails. She only had one reaction to two labs we came upon on the trail and I was able to refocus her pretty quickly. Way to go, Jackie! She is such a sweetheart. Such a good girl in the car, as well as coming and going from the jail.

Week 33
Jackie had a super fun week. She played "long fetch" every day. This is the name her handler gave to the game they play with a half inflated volleyball or her favorite tennis ball. He throws it the full length of the dog yard for her and she takes off at full speed to chase it down. She always brings it back right away. Jackie's a smart girl and she absolutely knows how to keep the game going. We're hoping that Brownie will take a few lessons from her in the "fetch" department. Jackie went to an event this week and charmed everyone from children to seniors. Everyone loved her and commented on how wonderful her manners are. She was an absolute star! Of course, we already know that. Jackie has been a star at the prison for the last few months because of her sweet personality with everyone she meets.

Field Trip Alert (as told by HOPE volunteer Cindy): On Saturday November 17, Jackie went to the Gifts That Give Fair in Lancaster.  I could be a little biased, but I think she was the hit of the fair.  The fair had many non-profit vendors and Jackie lay beside her HOPE volunteer most of the day.  The tables were pretty close together and Jackie just kind of sprawled on the floor.  But the other vendors were only too happy to stop and pet her and then step over her as they walked by.  I think she even enticed a few people to make a donation to the HOPE Program. She loved sniffing all the different cuisines that were offered.  She got a bite of a fajita, but don’t tell her handler.  When asked, she would sit up so that people could see her.  Many thought she was a service dog because she was so good and stayed right by the table.  When kids came over to pet her, they were asked to give her a treat, and she took it very gently out of their hands.  Then they would pet her.  When asked, she would show her sit, paw and down skills.  She even gave a few kisses.

Week 32
“Jackie had a great week.”  She had a transition with a new handler, “and she made it very well. We have been exercising at least 15 minutes per day, and it really shows. She is in good shape, and her girlish figure is really showing.”  Jackie got to go on an adventure with HOPE volunteer Ronay this week, and her handler was happy with the report.  “They went to a dog park, and Jackie only slightly reacted towards a dog (another lab).  But, that is a huge improvement for her, and I was very proud.  There are some other new dogs here in the program, and she seems to be settling in with them too, especially Angel.  As far as the other ones, that will come in time.  Every new dog she meets will help give her confidence.”  Keep gaining that confidence, Jackie!  We join your handler in saying that we’re very proud of you!

Week 31
Jackie’s handlers gave her a lot of exercise after Hurricane Sandy passed through the area.  “We have been playing long fetch for at least 15 minutes or until she gets tired.  She is really good with the ‘out’ command, bringing the ball and giving it to us.  She then sits and is ready for another long toss.  We love playing with her, and she is always ready for us to throw the ball again.  Jackie is a great dog, and we can’t understand why she hasn’t been adopted.”  Your forever home will come to you, sweet girl!

Week 30
“Jackie’s had a good week, as always.”  She worked on her “around” command (her handlers spin a treat in a circle and she follows it).  Although she hasn’t mastered the skill yet, her handlers are confident that she will in no time.  They also continued to expose her to the other dogs in the program to boost her socialization skills with them. “Jackie is just a good all-around dog.”

Week 29
Jackie’s handlers report that “she had a relaxing week. The weather wasn’t very cooperative, so we worked with her mainly in the cell.  She did get to go on a nice trip with Margie last Saturday.  Jackie seemed to have a lot of extra energy when she got back from her get-away, so we hung outside all day Sunday and played fetch for a while. She perks up when we ask her if she wants to go outside.”   Because of her breed, Miss Jackie likes watching the groundhogs in the yard.  Brownie, her newest HOPE pack mate, is a long-haired brown dachshund, who Jackie thinks may be one of those critters in the yard, “so we need to work on that, but other than that, Jackie has been her usual self…fun loving and outgoing.”

Week 28
Jackie improves with her socialization with her pack mates every day!  “It’s not really a struggle, it’s just a work in progress.  She has been able to play along the other pups in the dog runs, and this week, she was able to sniff Rambo.  She even put her paw on his back playfully.”  What a great accomplishment, little girl!  We know that you’ll continue to learn that other dogs can be your friends, sweet, Jackie!  We’re looking forward to hearing about the adventures of your being a “fun-loving, playful Lab” in your forever home soon, little girl!

Jackie had another fabulous week. She is truly a dimaond in the rough. She adores her people - all of them! Jackie is 75 pounds of pure love and affection. She is easy to train and even easier to love! She's been waitin gand waiting, but not having much luck finding her perfect match. Maybe it's and you've been waiting for just the right moment. Or, maybe it's your best friend or your co-worker. Help a girl out and share her story with someone special who would love her as much she will them.

Week 26
Jackie’s new handlers report that she continues to get along better with the other dogs in the program.  “She can still be afraid, but she’s coming along okay.”  Her handlers have also been working on her leash manners.  “She likes to pull sometimes, so we just stop, have her do a sit, and then keep on going.”  Jackie’s handlers give her some fun time for all her good work. “She loves to play ball.  In fact, we almost have her doing a back flip to get the balls.”  Obviously, your new girlie figure comes in handy in a lot of areas, little girl!  Keep focusing, sweet Jackie!

Week 25
Jackie also got new handlers, and after just a week with her, they’ve come to learn a lot of positive qualities in their new pup.  “She’s doing well with her commands.  She loves to play fetch and is almost trained to sit and stay while we throw the ball.  She won’t go get it until she is told to do so.  Jackie is also doing better with being around the other dogs.  We have noticed that if we get her active and playful before leaving the cell, she is much less aggressive towards them.  She is a fun-loving dog, and is compassionate towards humans.  Jackie is also a very persistent hunter.  When we go for our morning walks around the block, she makes sure to check every groundhog hole.  She is always walking with her nose to the ground, sniffing.”  You are a peach, Jackie, and we HOPE someone is willing to give you your forever home and appreciate all of your positive qualities.

jackieWeek 24
Jackie is a heartbreaker. She's on eof those dogs that you fall in love with almpst instantly. She is outwardly affectionate, loves you from the moment she meets you and is always eager to please. But, here comes the beartbreaker part - she's also one of those dogs that gets passed over time and time again for no particular reason. Granted, she needs a home where she's the only pet, but we know there are plenty of you out there. Maybe you're getting over the loss of your last friend or maybe you're just not sure you're ready for a dog again. Jackie is the perfect fit. She's relazed and mellow, but playful and silly. She has all the best qualities of a Lab, but only for 20 minutes or so at a time so you won't have to worry about your rotator cuff needing work from endlessly having to throw balls for her. She loves to play, but is just as happy to snuggle with you. She's the whole package and if you make her the center of your universe, she will repay you in spades with her love and loyalty. It's time for her to start the next chapter of her life and she needs you to helpher get started.

Jackie’s handlers write that “she is doing well with everything.  She still is learning new things each and every week.  She knows many tricks and listens or obeys commands with little or no difficulty.  Jackie is a wonderful dog. She is full of energy and excitement.  She would be a great pet for a family that will show her much attention.  She loves to play and to be petted.  We believe she is ready for that right person to come and take her home now. ”

Week 22
Jackie’s handlers gave her a refresher course on her basic commands this week.  They report that, although she’s been with them for five months “she continues to make progress every day.  Her toleration for other dogs has increased tremendously.  Jackie even let the new dog, Thunder, sniff her and she didn’t react to him.  Before she entered the HOPE Program, she probably would have gone after him, but she has learned discipline and patience.  The biggest thing that she has learned is that not all dogs are going to hurt her and it is okay for them to get close to her.”  This week, after training, Jackie “got to have some good old fun playing fetch.  She loves chasing any type of ball that we throw or kick.  Her level of energy is endless.”  In fact the only way Jackie will stop playing is when her handlers stop playing.  “Jackie is a wonderful, loving dog.  I’m sure she could make the perfect pet to your family.  You won’t be disappointed.”  Jackie chimed in to say, “hurry up and adopt me!”

Week 21
“Jackie has done a phenomenal job with her dog-on-dog approaches.  She is able to approach another dog within feet without becoming aggressive or alarmed.”  Like Rambo, the only time she now reacts to another dog is if he or she reacts to her first.  The best news is that at times Jackie will pay the other dogs “no never mind.  She has come a long way since her first day here.  Every day she gradually progresses.”  We’re so pleased with your progress sweet girl!  One of the handlers says that “she is now ready for her next step.  She is ready to be adopted.  Jackie will make a great addition to a kind, loving family who will not shy from showing her attention.”

Week 20
One of Jackie’s handlers reports that, with some parallel walking training, she is “doing 100% better than when she first arrived in the program.”  We’re proud of you, little girl!    This pup loves to receive attention from her admirers on the block, and improved on her loose-leash walking this week!  “Jackie is very intelligent.   She picks up on her new tasks/commands pretty fast.  She loves playing fetch, especially catching a soccer ball.  We will either throw or kick it and Jackie will catch it before it hits the ground.  Sometimes, she will jump in the air to catch the ball and do a 180 degree spin.  She’s a show-off.”  Of course, with all of the exercise she’s been receiving, she continues to lose those unwanted pounds and regain her energy.  “Jackie is a wonderful dog and is ready to be the next new addition to a home.  Hurry and adopt her!

Week 19
Jackie’s handlers are happy with her progress in accepting other dogs into her life this week!  One of them reports that “she has been making accomplishments with approaching other dogs.  She is a very smart dog and is a fast learner.  I expect with enough time and patience, she will soon be able to tolerate other dogs with no problems.  She is getting better at paying them no mind.”  Jackie has no problems listening to her commands, and continues to enjoy her time in the doggie yard.  “She still loves to play whenever we take her outside.  It seems like she never runs out of energy.  As long as we keep picking the ball up and throwing it, she will never cease chasing it.  The great thing is that 90% of the time, she brings the ball right back to you for you to throw it again.  Jackie truly is a great dog.”  Now this great dog needs forever home.  Could you find it in your heart to give her one?

Week 18
Jackie’s handlers report that “she has made tremendous progress with her commands.  We rarely have to repeat ourselves because she obeys us on the first command. She is also slowly but surely getting better with the other dogs.  Jackie is very laid back at times, but when it’s time to go out for exercise or play, she acts like a puppy, never running out of energy.”  Jackie attended Pride Fest last weekend, and did well during her first ambassadorship for the HOPE program!  She loved lying under the HOPE table, and the hamburger treats that she received to divert her attention when other pups passed by her.  She has soulful eyes, and her fur is like black satin.  Her handlers know that “she would be a great candidate for a family surrounding.  She has done a complete 360 turn around since she entered the program, and she deserves another chance.  Jackie is a beautiful pure bred lab who needs a good home.”  No truer words were written, sweet girl!

Week 17
Jackie is a star. No one seems to notice, except for us and her inmate handlers, but she is a STAR! She is the perfect blend of playful pup and mature, settled canine adult. She's happy to play with you when you're feeling up for a game and then head indoors with you to settle down for a snuggle together. Jackie has a fantastic personality and is continuing to make more progress in her training with each passing week. She practices her doggie manners every single day and although she'd definitely prefer a home of her own, she is more than happy to tolerate passing dogs as long as you help her protect her personal space. Jackie is 75 pounds of love. When you walk in the door, her tail starts wagging immediately and doesn't stop until she rests her head on your lap to fall asleep. She remembers the safety and comfort of having a family and we know she is more than ready to cherish that feeling again. All she needs is someone to see her the way we do and make her their one and only!

Jackie’s handlers say that she is doing very well with interacting with and greeting the other people on the block.  “She is always excited to see a person’s face.”  This pup also loves to play catch and fetch with any toy her handlers throw for her to chase, and “she brings it right back and gives it to us for us to throw again.  Jackie is very affectionate and loving.  She loves to be scratched anywhere and everywhere.  She is doing very well with her commands and is getting better doing them without treats. She will make a great pet.  All she needs is some love and attention from a willing family.”

Week 15
One of Jackie’s handlers reports that “she has made tremendous progress with being able to control her aggression around other dogs.  Before, she would go nuts when she would see one.  Now, with the ‘watch me’ and ‘leave it’ commands, Jackie is able to relax long enough to see that the other dog is not going to harm her.”  Although there is still some work to be done, her handlers say that “at least we’ve made positive progress to move forward with.” This girl has also achieved a healthy weight again!  “Even though Jackie is a larger dog, she will calm down and watch TV with you.  On the other hand, if you want a dog who has the energy of a puppy, Jackie would be perfect for you.”  Here’s to a family who loves only you, and your sweet self, little girl!

Week 14
Jackie, Lena and Ruby’s handlers practiced parallel walking this week, with some good results!  They still need a lot of work, but these pups had a positive experience being around each other.  Good work, little girls!  Jackie’s handler reports that “not only has she learned her commands and tricks, she no longer feels threatened around other dogs.” He also gave her gold stars for her basic commands, listening to others than him, and being calm when meeting new people.

jackie learned the "figure eight" at class this week. With a little patience and plenty of cheese, she quickly learned how to weave in and out of her handler's legs. This was a tricky one for her and, at first, she wasn't quite sure how she felt about the whole idea. But, the great thing about Jackie is that she looks to her person for confidence. You can see it all over her face and in every inch of her wagging tail. Once she knows she's safe with you, she'll do whatever you ask of her. Inch by inch, step by step sweet Jackie!

Week 13
Jackie met Lena and Buddy this week, and she admittedly has some anxiety about the new dogs in her life.  With some special attention from their handlers, Jackie and Lena were eventually able to lay down beside each other in adjoining dog runs!  “Overall, it went well and they both got a chance to see that neither dog was going to harm the other.  I practiced stays with Jackie as Lena Was walking around her space.  She did very well with all of the distractions.  Lena also did well to adapting to Jackie.”  Her handler treated his pup with a little play/fetch time to reward her for doing so well around Lena.  “Jackie loves to chase the bouncy ball, and she goes nuts when she can’t catch it on the first bounce.  She just has a good old time.”  We just wish someone would give you a good old time in your forever home, Jackie!  Congratulations for accepting Lena into your life so quickly, sweet girl!

Week 12
Jackie’s handler reports that “we had yet another productive and progressive week.  We parallel walked with Ruby, and then we had Jackie just lay relaxed while the other dogs were walking around, in front or near her.   She didn’t react, so she must not have felt threatned by them, or she could have been too tired.”  Either way, Jackie, your handler is teaching you that other dogs are okay!  Last week, her handler reported about the breakthrough with the paw command.  “She loves giving it.  She is so smart and intelligent that when I ask for her paw and then the other, she knows to throw me the other paw, rather than giving me the same one.”  Jackie loves the loose-leash walks that she takes with her handler, and he’s happy to report that she doesn’t pull as much as she once did.  “If she does pull, I stop.  She stops and walks back to me.  She is still slimming down, and her energy is going up.  For 7-years old, she plays like a puppy, however when you tell her to relax, she acts like a young lady."

Jackie’s handler reports that “we had a big breakthrough in her training.  She finally has learned her paw command.  It’s amazing for me.  After 7 weeks, when I asked her for her paw, she never gave it to me.  One day, however, I was eating and to get my attention, she gave me her paw.  I never asked for it, and she just gave it to me on her own, also as a touch.  I was blown away, and I treated Jackie highly for giving me her paw.”  Her handler will work on “other [paw]’ next, but he’s thrilled that she has learned a new trick to show off to the others on the block!  Jackie spent some time this week doing parallel walking around some of the other dogs, especially with the new kid, Ruby.  She’s also doing “100 times better on a loose leash than she was when she first arrived in the Hope Program.  Her handler has nothing but good things to say about his sweet girl.   “Not only is Jackie learning new tricks/commands, but she continues to lose weight.  I’d say she’s lost 10-15 pounds so far.  She loves to play and has tons of energy, but at the same time, she will lay next to you and watch TV.  Hurry and adopt Jackie!”

Field Trip Alter (as told by HOPE Volunteer Margie) - Jackie was super excited for her field trip. There was quite a bit of pulling as we left the prison, but I could hardly blame her. We went out on one of the trails over at the college and after her initial excitement, we settled in for some loose leash walking practice.  Jackie did extremely well - I could tell that her handler has been working with her.  She did try to go after a couple of rabbits, but other than that she pretty much stayed with me.  Her weight management program is working -  she had plenty of energy for the trail and then she finished up by running and jumping into the creek and swimming to her heart's content.  She absolutely loved the water - a true lab!  When we got back to the prison, I did speak with her handler for a minute and let him know how well she did.  As we were talking, I looked a couple of cells down and started laughing.  There was Checkers  looking at me, trying to get his entire head out thru the slot in the cell door.  It was too funny.  Then I heard "Hey, Margie".  I turned around to find Rambo staring at me and whining thru the slot in his door.  It was truly a Kodak moment - too bad no cameras :o)

Week 10
Jackie’s handler praised her for her basic commands this week.  Like Rambo, his pup wasn’t too keen on Ruby when she first arrived.  So, her handler rolled up his sleeves, and started on some socialization.  He had them next to each other in the dog runs, and he gave Jackie a rawhide to keep her occupied and not focused on Ruby.  “I let Ruby be so she could adapt to her surroundings.  Something very interesting happened.  Jackie left her rawhide and went to the fence to see Ruby.  She started to quiver her lip but then started air nipping.  Ruby responded by flipping her tongue and she actually licked Jackie’s face.  Jackie couldn’t believe it.  She just stepped back and went back to her rawhide in shock.  This was a great start to both dogs meeting each other.”  Jackie’s handler was so proud of his pup for behaving so well, that she was treated to 30 minutes of playing fetch and keep away.  We are proud of you too, sweet girl!

jackieWeek 9
Jackie’s handler worked on her basic commands again this week, but this time, he “linked more than one command together, so she got used to doing more than one and thinking she was getting a treat.  She picked up on this very well. Jackie is an intelligent dog when it comes to learning new things.”   This pup still hasn’t grasped the concept of her “paw” command yet, “usually when I ask her for her paw, she goes into a down.”  Her handler will continue to work with her on this, so she can shake her new family’s hands!  Jackie has also made tremendous progress with getting along with the other dogs in the program.  All the handlers are working together to help this pup make that transition, as well as their dogs who have the same issues as well.  We’re so happy that you’ve broadened your circle of friends from just Checkers, but to some of the other dogs as well!

Week 8
Jackie had a fantastic week. She absolutely loves to play fetch with her handler so he used that as a training tool this week. He and Jackie worked on her recalls using her favorite red kong toy and, as usual, plenty of cheese. She loved this came and didn't even realize how great she was getting at coming when called because she was having so much fun. As a result of her rediscovered love of playtime, Jackie has found her girlish figure again and is now at an ideal weight. She is a beautiful girl who is fabulous with people. Jackie loves to watch televsion with her handler after a good play session. She's the perfect dog for someone who likes to play for a little and then settle right down together. Now all she needs is you!

Week 7
Jackie had a chance to meet a lot of new people this week.  Her handler brought her out onto the block during dayroom and asked people to approach them.  If she was patient and sitting and/or lying down she was given a treat.  “Jackie loved this because she is extremely good at this task.  She already sits as people come to her, and she has learned to take her treats gently.”  This pup still has some issues with a couple of the dogs in the program, but their handlers are working together to help her feel more comfortable around them.  Her handler is proud to report that “Jackie is turning out to be a wonderful dog.  She has grown and made such improvement since she first entered the program.  She keeps getting better every day.”  Good girl, Jackie!

Week 5
Jackie attended CPAA’s Compassion with Fashion event this past weekend, and her handler was happy to hear how well she did during her first outing as a HOPE ambassador!  While at the prison, this pup spent her days interacting with, and being more comfortable with her canine compadres.  The other handlers in the program helped Jackie with this training effort by mixing games with desensitizing exercises. After all was said and done, her handler reports that “it was a successful training lesson with fun and exercise as a reward.  Jackie definitely made some great improvements in her behavior since joining the program.  It can only get better from here on out.”

Week 4
Jackie and her handler spent a lot of time working on her loose-leash walking this week.  “She tends to pull, especially when she sees a bird, rabbit or groundhog.  We practiced a lot a walking back and forth past the groundhog holes.  The first five minutes were rough.  She about pulled me off of my feet.  Once I gave her the “watch” command to refocus her attention and told her to “leave it,” Jackie started to pick up to stay away from the holes.  We did this for about 30 minutes and after the first 5-10 minutes, she was walking beautifully”.  Her handler is happy to report that Jackie is “turning out to be a wonderful dog.  She is now tolerating being around the other dogs in the program as long as both she and the other dog are calm and relaxed.  Jackie enjoys playing hand ball with me out back.  She gets plenty of exercise, especially when she has a hard time fetching the ball or when it bounces out of her mouth.  Usually, once we’re done playing, we just lay down on my floor or bed and go right to sleep.  Hopefully, somebody will want a wonderful, loving, fun dog to adopt to their home.  Jackie is the one.  Hurry and adopt her!”

Week 3
Jackie’s handler focused on her parallel walking with Checkers, Homer and Elliott this week.  He also reviewed her basic commands on a daily basis, and gave her gold stars for her down, watch me and leave it commands.  She also comes up to her handler and sits when he says her name!  Checkers and Jackie play very well together.  “She acts like he is her cub and she is the mother.”  This pup also loves chasing a racquetball in the yard.  “It keeps her exercise level up because when she misses the ball on a bounce, she has to continuously move to get it.  She is full of energy.”  Jackie has a more girlish figure as a result!  “She might appear scary because of her size, but she is so gentle and caring. Jackie would make the perfect pet for anyone.”

Weeks 1 & 2
During Jackie’s first week in the prison, she not only adjusted to her name (she went in as Blackie), but also her new home.   This little girl loves to run around the yard and chase toys.  “She has great recall, and although her loose-leash walking needs some work, we know that she’ll learn.  So far, she is doing well being left alone in her cage.

During her second week, Jackie learned that Checkers is a great pal to play with.  “This is a big milestone for her, and we’re hoping that she will start to get along with all of the other dogs in the program.  Jackie started to work on her basic commands this week.  She’s still grasping the concept of walking on-leash, but her handlers use the “with me” command to keep her in check, and she’s responding to them!  Jackie is also honing her “give paw” skills.  “She loves to chase toys around when you throw them.  Overall, she is a great dog who loves to be around people.  She’ll make someone a happy owner.”  A first good two weeks, sweetheart!
