* A family who will understand my fears, be patient with me and help me be brave
Week 15
Izzy made terrific progress in her time at the jail, but she has headed home to her foster family to continue her training. Izzy is waiting patiently for a home of her very own.

Weeks 13 & 14
Izzy got an additional handler this week, and “she did extremely well with the transition. It only took a few hours until Izzy was running around with toys and wanting him to play. She loves her new rubber football and carries it around the cell most of the day. Her playfulness seems to increase every day and extends to later in the day. Morning is when she is most playful and interactive.” Izzy’s handlers were also happy with the reports they received after the Mutt Mixer last weekend. “We heard that she did better than expected, which is always a plus for a trainer.” Although this pup has made some great strides during her time in the program, she also has regressed a bit in some areas. Her main handler reports that “we found out this week that Izzy is going back to her foster home. It’s a shame to see her go without an adoption, but this might work out well for Izzy. It really seems that there are just way too many people in a small area for her.” We know that you’ll find your niche in the world, little girl, and will fulfill your handlers’ dream of a forever home for you.

Week 12
“Izzy and I had a good week with a little less barking, a little less growling and a lot more playing.” Her handler asked some of the inmates who aren’t in the program to help with her being able to go up to people while on the block. So far so good, because Izzy is responding well by giving the “guys who try and help out sniffs a little more, which is a positive situation for everyone involved!” Some of the other handlers in the program visited this pup at her cell more often this week, which really seemed to please her! Izzy and her handler also spent some time on the quiet tier together in the mornings when he wasn’t at work, and then he let her run freely with Maggie later in the day. “With Maggie chasing and jumping on Izzy, she doesn’t pay the day room crowds much mind.” As we know, some people are morning people, others not so much. Well, Izzy is a morning dog! “She has developed the early morning ritual of waking me up by either jumping on my chest, or licking my face. I prefer the licking, because waking up to the sound of a dog getting a running start to pounce on me can be startling.” Since Izzy doesn’t spend too much time in her crate, her handler washed her dog bed and her blanket this week, and put it at the foot of his bunk where she sleeps. “The benefit of this is I now have a personal foot warmer under the blanket. If Izzy gets too cold, she’ll move up the bunk and curl into a ball in my armpit.” We hope you find a morning person or people to adopt you as their very own, sweet Izzy!

Weeks 10 & 11
Izzy’s handler reports that it’s slow but steady with her. Her commands are coming along very well, and she will lay down in some of her “danger zones.” She doesn’t like to lay down, so her handler is slowly increasing the time she’s in the down position. He let Izzy off her leash out back, and learned that she doesn’t run off. “She has been running like a nut, and loves playing fetch. She comes right to me when I call her. We also had Izzy and Maggie out together off-leash, and they ran until they couldn’t breathe!” They also play well together on the tier. Izzy has been exploring her surroundings by going to the other dogs’ cells. She also is going out when the inmates are standing in the tier getting ready to go do work. Because some of them stand in the same spot each day, Izzy knows who she can trust in her world. She also likes the treats she receives from the day Sergeant, and her visits to the unit managers’ office on her way outside to play and train. Since this pup’s handler doesn’t have a cellie right now, he has given Izzy the top bunk! She likes to lay on it so she can look out the door. Of course, she still sleeps with her handler! “Izzy has got to be the easiest dog to sleep with because she gets up and moves every time I toss or turn. She is still up and at ‘em, bright and early and staring me down until I get up and play a little.” We’re proud of how brave you’re becoming, little girl!

Week 9
Izzy did well with her commands, and her ability to tolerate more strangers
this week. This pup’s “biggest issue seems to be in the open block when
there are a lot of people around her. We let her run around it off-leash
when it was quiet, and she loved it.” Izzy’s biggest accomplishment this
week was “letting one of the Corrections Officers pet her without ever
meeting her before! For some reason, she felt comfortable with a complete
stranger.” This pup also got a chance to chase Banshee back and forth in
adjoining dog runs this week, with good results! Like some of the other
handlers reported about their dogs, Izzy had a great time in the snow! “We
all spent time outside running around in it and throwing snowballs. Izzy
loved having them thrown at her. She would jump and dive on top of them, and
destroy them!” You’re still making progress, little girl, and we’re rooting
for you!

Izzy’s handler reports that “I would say that she is coming along.” This pup
showed great strides with her socialization and confidence skills this week!
“We spent most of the week playing out back of the block, and just observing
the world.” Her handler patiently introduced Izzy to her “danger zones,” and
worked with her to overcome them so they became “comfort zones” for her.
This pup still isn’t too sure about all of the people in her world, so the
fact that she sat calmly with her handler while they were walking by was
progress for her! After just two weeks with her new handler, Izzy has “also
become my clock. She knows when I’ve been up too late by whining when I get
into the bunk. She also has been waking me up around 4:00 a.m. every morning
by sharply sitting and staring at me.” Since the day at the prison doesn’t
officially start until a couple of hours later, her handler tells Izzy to go
back to bed. We’re proud of your progress, little girl!

Week 7
Izzy was introduced to a new handler this week. It took a couple of days for
them to figure each other out, but they’ve “warmed up to each other rather
well.” In fact, on their third day together, when Izzy’s handler walked into
their cell, he was “surprisingly bombarded by a dog who was so happy to see
me, she couldn’t contain herself. Since then, we have been doing great and
we’re still teaching each other.” Izzy also has already earned bed
privileges with her new friend! Although being out on the crowded tier still
isn’t her favorite activity, her handler will continue to work on her
tolerance of all of the people she encounters. When Izzy is in the dog runs,
however, “she is extremely playful and carefree. She is such a loving and
cuddly dog that it’s a shame she still has some fear issues. Hopefully, we
can work past them and get Izzy to a home.”

Week 6
Her handler reports that depending on her mood, Izzy still shows some
anxiety with her all of the hustle and bustle that she encounters in her
life at the prison. The good news is that she had another good week meeting
new people, and letting correction officers pet her! “We hang out on the
tier during our time in the dayroom, and she does great! She even played
with her ball out there this week! When she’s in her cell, she’s a different
dog.” Her handler will continue to work with Izzy so that she’s comfortable
both inside and outside of her comfort zone. Is there anyone willing to give
this pup a quiet forever home? We HOPE so!
Field Trip Alert (from HOPE volunteer Margie) - Yesterday I
took her out on a trail in the woods with a 20 ft leash. I think she
probably had more fun than she ever has - exploring and taking in all the
smells. Her tail came up and her mouth was open and she actually looked like
a happy dog. She even started looking back at me, checking in. We practiced
her "come" command - I'd let her get to the end of the leash and then call
her back. She did well with that and even gave me some happy tail wags. We
passed a couple of people on the trail and she was ok with that. We met a
woman with a young basset hound that wanted to play. Izzy interacted fine
with the dog, but really wasn't interested in playing and of course
completely avoided the woman. Once back at the car, she can't wait to jump
in. She does seem to like the car a lot - I'm sure it's a safe place for
her.

Weeks
4 & 5
Izzy continues to face her fears with her handler’s guidance! This week, he
had her out on the tier, “and she did great! She even went up to a stranger
while everyone was out! Little by little, she’s getting better.” Izzy is
also getting over her fear of the corrections officers. Those keys making
noise can be a bit unnerving to a shy pup! BUT, she let one of them give her
a pet. Another accomplishment for you, Izzy! When this pup and her handler
come back to the cell after being out and about, she will sit at the door
and wait for him to give her the “okay” signal. “As soon as I do, she runs
in and jumps on the bed. I don’t mind her on the bed. If she feels safe
there, that’s fine. She also loves her squeaky toy so much that she chewed
the squeaker out of it!” As for the other dogs in the program, Izzy loves
when she gets to play with her girlfriends Leah and Jada. She also does very
well with Bo and Maggie. Her handler is proud to say that “I have high hopes
for Izzy. I believe in time she’s going to be just fine.”

Week 3
Izzy’s handler says that she had a good week. “She does well with her sit,
down and paw pretty commands when she isn’t too scared.” Izzy got some play
time with Jada and Leah in the big yard this week, and “they were great
together!” This pup still isn’t too sure of some of the strangers she meets,
and will show her unease with them, but she really likes the company of a
few of the other handlers in the program. Izzy, you’re going to be okay,
sweet girl! After just three weeks, her handler reports that this shy girl
“is great in the cell, and not too many noises bother her. When she wakes up
every morning, so do you do too, because she’s full of energy and wants to
play.” This pup is still sometimes scared when she goes outdoors, but with
the help of her canine friends (and their handlers) she likes being there.
Overall, her handler says that Izzy is “so good, and is getting better and
better.” Keep getting better, little girl! We’re proud of you!

Week 2
Izzy’s handlers report that she’s still adjusting to the prison environment,
but “now that we’ve bonded, she trusts us, so it will get easier for her.
Inside of the cell, she’s great. She listens to us, and is not scared. But,
Izzy doesn’t like the tier at all. If it’s quiet, she’s not as afraid, but
this place is hardly ever quiet.” This pup got to play with Leah a lot this
week. “The two of them get along fine together.” Since she knows that she’s
safe with her handlers, Izzy especially loves their attention and gives them
kisses while they rub her belly. You’re going to be okay, sweet pup!

Week 1
Her handlers say that Izzy is “adjusting pretty good.” She has especially
taken to them. “She loves to be around you once she knows that she can trust
you.” Izzy isn’t too sure about the sounds she encounters in her new world.
“She did come out onto the tier by herself three times before dayroom, but
once she heard all of the noise, she went right back into our cell.” After
just a few short days, her handlers report that “Izzy seems like she will
really come around in time.” We’re rooting for you, Izzy!

UPDATE
9-3-11
Izzy is heading to the big house tomorrow. This little sweetheart just needs
a crash course in manners and a super-sized membership to the doggie yard to
help her settle in and find her way home. She is
an adorable, one year old Bull Terrier mix (like the one who won
Westminster!) who is available for adoption through
Mid-Atlantic Bulldog Rescue. Stay tuned
for next week's update.
