Week 13
Isis got to be off-leash in the big doggie yard this week! Her handler reports that she loves the snow! “She runs all through it, scooping it up in her mouth while she’s running.” Isis and her handler tried to play ball in the snow, but it kept getting lost in the white stuff. Isis’ handler was very happy to hear how well she did on her field trip with Margie! He had Isis out on the tier the other day, and “she did pretty good out there. She listens very well too.” Her handler knows that Isis has come a long way under his care. Now, she needs a place to call her own away from the noises she encounters each day at the prison. “She’s such a sweet girl who deserves a good home.”

Isis's Day of Work Release:  Isis took another field trip with her buddy, Margie, this week.  This time, she was on work release for the day in Margie's office.  Isis had a terrific time!  She loved all of the other people in the office.  She especially liked the dog bed in Margie's office.  It was just the right size and was a wonderful place to relax for the day.  But, her favorite part of the day by far was the pile of toy's in Margie's coworker Kathy's office.  Isis spent a good part of the day visiting Kathy's office to select a toy and then brining it back to Margie's office for some playtime.  By the end of the day, Isis had all of the toys piled up on her bed and was as happy as a girl could be!

Week 12
Isis reached a couple milestones this week.  First, she had a wonderful field trip with her friend Margie.  They walked through a little neighborhood and had a terrific time exploring all of the new sights and smells.  They also took a trip to Home Depot.  For those of you who have been following Isis, you know that she tried this once before and was so terrified, she couldn't even get to the front door.  This week was a different story altogether!  Although she wasn't exactly relaxed, Isis wandered through the store with Margie, stop for some brief training exercises here and there and almost enjoyed herself!!  As usual, she loved the car ride back and forth and even got praise from some passing officers about her fabulous leash manners on her way back into the jail.

Her second milestone came alongside Isis's version of a jail break.  She was playing with some of her other human friends in the back kennels when she decided it was time to go.  So, she popped open the loosely latched gate and took off for an afternoon jog around the prison.  All of her inmate friends were calling to her, but she was having too  much fun.  That is until her regular handler came on the seen.  He took one look at the situation, called her name and was utterly amazed at what happened next.  Isis stopped in her tracks, turned on a dime and came galloping back to him.  The best part is, she didn't take any shortcuts...she followed sidewalks only all the way back!  Her handler was so proud of her that he gave her an entire cheese stick.  "After all," he said, "that was a hundred yard recall!"  Way to go Isis!!

Week 11
Isis is making slow, but very steady progress.  She is venturing out of her cell on her own and even visiting with some of the inmates out on the tier.  When it's very calm, she'll even show her belly while out on the tier in the hopes of getting just one more belly rub.  Isis made a new friend this week and licked his hand to show him how much she enjoyed the treat that he shared with her.  These are such heartwarming moments and we all cheer quietly to see her slowly coming around.  Isis is a beautiful girl who just needs a safe place to call her very own.

Week 10
Isis continues to show a little more confidence each day! Although she still showed some fear during class last week, she was able to stay for the whole session. She even walked out of her cell on her own, which she doesn't do very often! One day this week, her handler took her leash, and said "come on," and Isis just followed him up the tier! "She has her good days." Isis loves playing with her ball, and she also loves the snow. "She runs with her mouth open, scooping it up, and she jumps and plays in the snow banks." Keep up the good work, little girl!

Week 9
"Isis has been doing pretty good lately!" She still has her moments when she hears loud noises, but her recovery time has lessened! Isis still prefers not to be on the tier, but when she's outside, she'll "go up to people more and more. She's very quick about it...she sneaks up on them and sniffs while they're not looking." The other handlers continue to help with Isis' socialization by paying her a call in her cell, and taking her outside. Her main handler is proud to say that their reports are very good about her behavior when she been with them! "She needs to know that everyone isn't going to hurt her." Like the other dogs in the program, Isis really liked playing in the snow this week. "She runs around, lays in it, eats it, she loves it!" As you know if you've been reading her story, Isis and her handler have formed a very special bond. "She really is a sweetheart, and loves to play. Isis also likes to curl up with you. She falls asleep on me
all the time, and drools on my shirts." In fact, he lovingly refers to his pup as a leech. "Once she learns to trust you, you can't get her off of you!" We know there's a forever family out there for you to snuggle up to, sweet Isis!

Weeks 7 & 8
Isis still gets spooked by all of the loud noises she encounters at the prison. "When it's quiet, she's great, even with some noise she's good, but when it gets too loud, she doesn't do well." The other handlers in the program have been helping Isis come out of her shell by coming over to her cell, petting her, and giving her treats. They've also been taking her out in the yard, so that she knows she's safe with people other than her main handler. Isis has become more and more brave about leaving her space! "She has no problem going over to the door on her own now, and sometimes walks right out of it." As we've reported before, Isis is quite enamored with her handler. "She likes to sleep with me, although she's a bit of a bed hog. I let her up with me, as long as she's had a good day."

Week 6
"Isis has been doing very good lately." This shy pup is walking out on the tier more on her own without a treat, and approaching more people! She also hasn't been running to her crate as often when she hears loud noises. When in her crate, if she hears something scary, she'll perk up, but will soon lay back down. Isis loves her play time in the yard! "She chases me, and loves when I chase her. She's very fast." Her handler even got her to play with a basketball that she used to be afraid of during their romps! When she's with her canine tier mates in the yard, Isis can sometimes get a little overbearing for them, but she's able to get herself in check in no time! Isis just loves her handler! "When I get back from work, Isis is so happy to see me. She jumps up and lays on me and rubs her head on me. She's getting better a little at a time." We're proud of you, Miss Isis!

Week 5
Isis worked on all of her commands this week, and she's coming along well with them! She's still a bit unsure of the noises in her world, but she's doing better at adjusting to them as well! When it's quiet on the tier, Isis will bravely go out onto it by herself! She's also going up to more people, even if it's just to sniff them. Good girl, sweet, pup! "She loves to be petted, and loves attention. She gives me her paw, just to say 'I'm here!'" We hope that you find a person to hold your paw in your forever home soon, Isis!

Week 4
"Isis has been doing well." She did have a couple of setbacks on the tier this week because of some of the new noises she encountered, but "she bounced back fairly quickly. She doesn't like loud noises at all!" Isis is also getting better about approaching folks on the block...she can be choosy about who she wants to meet, but it's progress! This pooch learned a new command this week called "show me your belly. She loves her belly rubbed, so when I say 'show me your belly,' she rolls over with all fours up waiting for me to pet her." Isis got a new toy this week! "She sleeps with it, she carries it around with her and loves to play with it!" Her handler says that although she has to find some more confidence, "she'll be fine with time." Keep finding your inner strength, sweet girl!

Week 3
Isis' handler reports that "she is very, very good as long as nothing else is going on and there aren't a lot of people around." This sweet girl is showing some bravery, however. "I have gotten her to come out of the cell on her own." She doesn't stay out on the tier for too long, but it's a big step for her! Isis has even peeped her head out of her haven to see what's going on in the world without any nudging from her handler! "She is making progress slowly, but at least she's making progress. Sometimes, she even goes up to people on her own without any treats." Isis learned to give "high fives" to her handler this week, and she now gives him both paws, not just one. The latter took about two minutes, because "she is such a smart dog." Isis likes that fact that her handler doesn't mind that she prefers her crate to be next to his bed, even if it means that his floor space is limited. "If she feels comfortable, I'm fine with that." She also loves to have her belly rubbed. "if you rub her belly, she'll be your best friend." To reward her handler for his kindness, Isis has been treating him to some loving of her own. "A few nights, I woke up to her standing over me on my bed giving me kisses. She really loves to give kisses. Isis is so sweet."

Week 2
Isis continues to make a little progress each day! She's starting to get more comfortable in her cell, but she'll still run to her crate when she hears loud noises. Isis is being introduced to the tier "little by little" because she is very fearful of it. There is also a construction project in progress outside of the block, which sometimes gives Isis moments of pause. "Sometimes she will take treats out there, and sometimes she won't...it depends on what they're doing." To show her just what a special pup she is to him, her handler bought her a racquetball. "She loves running after it outside and inside!" We're very proud of your accomplishments in just two weeks, Isis! Know that you're safe with your handler, little one!

Week 1
Isis is taking baby steps each day.  She has begun to feel more comfortable with her handler is trusting him a little more each day.  She prefers the comfort and safety of her cell right now rather than the great outdoors.  She is getting used to the idea of strangers walking past her cell door and tossing in a treat or two.  The handlers all pitch in for this effort to help her get more comfortable.  So far it's working well and she has even chosen to approach a few "strangers" all on her own.  For her first week, she's doing great.  We hope she continues to gain confidence and begin to feel safe again.  Way to go, Isis.

UPDATE - 11/11/10
Isis headed to the big house today to get started on her training.  Isis is a  little fearful of new and surprising things and needs to learn how to trust, feel safe and relax with her pack.  She has lots of potential and we can't wait to see her start to overcome her fears and begin to enjoy life again.  She would do best in an adult only home.   Isis is a four year old German Shepherd and is available for adoption through Furry Friends Network
