ADOPTED!!!
Week 6
Honey has a stellar week leading up to her "parole." She reviewed all
of her obedience training and has even started voluntarily checking in with
her handlers during playtime. She has really mastered her interactions
with other dogs so that she doesn't offend anyone anymore and we think she
is truly ready to start fresh with her new family. Way to go, Honey!
Week 5
Honey has continued to improve, improve and then improve some more with each
passing week. She now approaches dogs in a far more civil manner than
when she first arrived. She still gets very excited, but she can find
her manners and remember her training now. She's a favorite of the
staff and she'll be missed when she heads off to her new home. Honey
is always the first to give out kisses each day and never misses an
opportunity for a scratch behind the ears or a tummy rub!
Week 4
What a great week for Honey. She is finally beginning to learn that
not every other dog welcomes her exuberant hellos! She has started to
approach in a much calmer manner and is even learning when to back off
during playtime. The other dogs are thrilled and we couldn't be more
proud of her. She's really coming along nicely with her obedience
training although her leash manners could still use a bit of work.
She'll be working extra hard on those this week and stay tune for the next
update to see how it went!
Week 3
Honey had a busy week with a lot of homework. She practiced her stays
a lot and was really trying to get the hang of "leave it." That one
could still use some more work. She still gets a little frustrated
because she can't quite figure out what is being asked of her. "If the
biscuit is on the floor, why on earth wouldn't I pick it up?" seems to be
her philosophy at the moment. But, we're sure that once she gets it,
she'll add it to the rest of tricks in her arsenal. She is still
having a great time getting to know each and every person that passes
through the cell block, walks past the doggie yard or happens to walk on the
sidewalk leading to our block. She's quite a social butterfly and her
manners are improving with each passing day!
Week 2
Honey wowed everyone again this week by nearly mastering her leash manners.
She responds very quickly now and remembers the way she's supposed to walk.
She is an excellent watch dog and likes to let the officers know that she
knows they're there. This week she's working extra hard on her "stay."
She'll be practicing in lots of different places with all sorts of
distractions. She'll also be working on her "nice to meet you" skills.
She tends to be a little overbearing when meeting other dogs, but we think
she'll come around quickly once she understands what's expected of her.
On the lighter side of things, she's had a lot of fun getting to know Toby
and Anna Mae and exploring all of the fun toys in the doggie yard!
Week 1
Honey is a social butterfly! During her first few days at the big
house, she couldn't get enough of the attention being showered on her by the
handlers and staff. She's a very sweet and happy girl who never misses
an opportunity to give kisses to friends and strangers alike. Lots of
people who don't know her enter the block each day, but they all leave as
friends of hers. Honey's handlers report that she's brilliant.
Granted, they might be a little biased, but other than her leash manners she
really does everything wonderfully. This week, they'll be working with
her to manager her leash walking. We're just positive that she'll do
great and continue winning over every single person at the prison in the
process!
UPDATE - 8/17/08
Honey is getting ready to start classes on August 24th. We're so
thrilled that we were able to work with her shelter and give her a second
chance. The Montgomery County SPCA definitely saw something special in
her and so do we! She's a gorgeous, four year old, German
Shepherd mix and just needs a refresher course in her manners before she'll
be ready for a fresh start. Honey is available for adoption through
Starfish to the Sea Animal Rescue.
We can't wait for her to get started!!
