Week 6
Hanson had a tough few days this week after catching a virus that sent him straight to the vet's office.  He recovered quickly and is heading home with his new family this week.  Hanson will leave quite a pawprint on the hearts of many at the prison.  He was loved very much and we all wish him the very best in his new home!

Week 5
Hanson has a new training exercise that his handler has dubbed "crowd surfing."  Hanson gets to practice his bravery with strangers by passing through large and small groups of people that have been strategically placed along his route by his handler.  Hanson did great!  He greeted every stranger with ease and confidence.  It's hard to believe this is the same boy we met just five weeks ago.  A little patience and compassion go an incredibly long way with Hanson and that is exactly what his handler has offered him and the results are nothing short of amazing.  Hanson still has moments here and there when his fear gets the better of him and he'll let out a warning bark, but they are fewer and further between with each passing week.  We are so proud of this boy!

Week 4
Hanson has had so much fun this week.  When the rain finally let up, it was out to the doggie yard for some much needed playtime.  He was quick to welcome Steven, but is completely confused by him.  Hanson will run and run with Steven trying to get him to play, but Steven is all about the birds.  Hanson thinks that attitude is "for the birds" so he runs full speed after Steven and side swipes him which typically ends with Hanson tumbling end-over-end through the grass.  Hanson is such a playful kid and he's made incredible progress since he's been at the jail.  This week the task was for Hanson to accept attention from strangers and friends alike while they were stooping down to him. It went great and he received a glowing report from his handler.  It is so nice to see him enjoying life again.

Week 3
This has been Hanson's best week yet!  He went on a field trip this week to Borders and had a great time learning to meet tons of strangers.  The kind folks at Borders let him come in the night before so that he could practice before the big day and he did great.  He's quite a ladies man and charmed all of the women in the store!!  He warms up quickly to men now too, especially if there's some cheese and bacon involved.  He's really beginning to conquer his fears and start to enjoy life again.  It is so wonderful to see and his inmate handlers just couldn't be more proud of him.  Hanson began a new part of his training this week which included the same work he's been doing, but with a different handler at the end of the leash.  We're trying to extend his confidence to whomever is walking with him and teach him that he can trust everyone who works with him in the same way he trusts his main handler.  So far, he's really done great.  Then, after that, it's off to play!  He's made some new friends this week in Elroy and Cole and, of course, Bella!

Week 2
Just two weeks and already Hanson is making great progress.  He is slowly, but surely, learning to trust humans again.  It is a long road, but with patience and understanding, we're certain he'll find his way.  His handler has found that in new situations, whether greeting old friends with excitement or new friends with apprehension, Hanson just needs a few minutes to assess the situation and then he's learning to calm himself and enjoy the company!  Hanson thoroughly enjoys his play dates with Bella.  They're so sweet together and they really seem to take comfort in each other's company.  Next week, Hanson will be starting to enlarge his circle of trust by taking walks with the other handlers in the program.  Good luck, Hanson!

Week 1
Hanson's first week may as well have been a year as far as we're concerned.  We've seen so much progress in this little boy in just a week that we're just amazed.  Hanson has gone from being utterly fearful of all people, sounds and movement to curious!!  Terrified to curious...in just one week!  His handler has placed him on a strict regimen of structured socialization.  Every day, they head out and try to make at least three new friends of the human variety.  Of course, the new friends have clear instructions and let Hanson come to them on his terms.  These are huge steps forward and we're all so proud of him.  Hanson has also made friends with Sarge and Bella and is testing the waters with India.  He's going to be so much fun to watch along his journey and we're all so grateful to have the good fortune to be a part of it.  As his handler says, Hanson is real gem...just in need of a good polishing!

UPDATE

Hanson is headed to the big house this week.  He'll be starting the program on Thursday, April 17th and we can't wait to start teaching him all of the wonderful things that can come from living with humans.  Stay tuned for updates on his progress!  Hanson is available for adoption through Cocker Spaniel Adoption Center
