Week 11
Grant came to the big house eleven weeks ago to learn some confidence. His
handlers patiently helped this little one go from a dog who was afraid of
all of the strangers in his world to a dog who was able to walk through the
block off-leash! His true puppy spirit came through during his time in the
program as well! Grant went to live with his forever family on Wednesday!
You will be missed, sweet boy, but we’re so very happy for you!

Week 10
“This week, Grant did very well learning and playing out back, and he
finally learned to shake or give his paw (treats helped). It was very cute!”
His handlers got Grant to run “enthusiastically between us. He was very
excited, but comfortable with us.” His handlers have learned that “this is
the best time for him to learn and try new things.” In fact, Grant loved the
activity so much, that he rolled over on his back for a belly rub, and tried
to do the shake command while on his back. “In the right setting, Grant is
very playful and a great companion! He will make a very good friend to
whoever adopts him. It was a great week for Grant!” Indeed it was! This pup
has been adopted, and will be going to his forever home soon! We’re so proud
of you and your handlers, little one!

Week 9
Grant’s handlers continued to work on his socialization skills on the block
this week. This pup is still a little shy with all of the noises and people
he encounters, but his handlers persevere, and take him out into the general
population at least a couple of times a day. As a result, Grant will now go
up to a stranger after 10-15 minutes (as long as they don’t make any sudden
movements)! “He is becoming more playful and confident.” Grant’s training is
also going well. He still doesn’t like giving up his paw for the shake
command, but his sit pretty, and roll over/wiggle commands are “very cute!”
Grant is a “great listener” and during quiet times, he will follow one of
his handlers around the front and sides of the block without a leash.
Grant’s favorite place to be is outside, especially if his doggie friends
are with him. “He has great interaction with the other dogs.” Keep coming
out of your shell, sweet Grant!

Week 8
Grant really liked the brief spell of spring weather that we experienced
this past week! His handlers used the opportunity to take him outside to
teach him how to roll over. “He is a funny guy. He likes to lay on his back
and wiggle, enjoying the warmth of the sun.” Grant also is a sniffer…he
loved all of the new smells he encountered in the yard. While indoors, this
pup worked on his “sit pretty” skills. His handlers report that seeing him
sit pretty on his hind legs for a treat will make you say “Awww!” Grant
still feels more comfortable being around all of the people in his world
when his canine buddies are by his side, but he’s still making strides in
conquering his fears. This pup, however, is very loyal to his handlers.
“Grant is a loveable dog and always wants to be at one of our sides as a
good companion. On or off leash, he will be at your side.” Now, Grant just
needs a place to call his own where he can be a loyal companion to his
forever family members. We HOPE you find it soon, little one!

Week 7
This week, Grant’s handlers worked on his positive socialization by having
him sit in a populated area while other inmates offered him treats and let
him come to them at his own pace. That helped Grant gain some confidence.
They also added another person while working on his come command from a
distance. They sat about ten feet from each other, forming a triangle, and
taking turns calling Grant. He went to the third person when asked to do so
with no hesitation! “This showed Grant he can go to other people when called
and get the same outcome…a treat, praise and release…it is safe to go to
other people.” Grant also is learning how to play with his red Kong ball.
His handlers take him out back, throw treats and tell him to find them. “He
is clever. He finds them quickly. I put treats in his ball, throw it and he
returns it. He runs fast with his tiny legs…he’s so happy to be outside
playing with us.” Although this little boy still has a way to go to find his
true comfort zone, we’re proud of how well he’s done since arriving at the
prison. “It was a good week for Grant!”

Week 6
Grant had another good week, and began to show the puppy side of his
personality! “He is more and more comfortable in the cell and occasionally
will follow us out, even if people are around. Grant knows his name well,
and responds when you call him with ‘watch me’ or ‘come Grant.’” This pup’s
handlers have been working on some of his skills from a distance of 10-15
feet. When they give him the okay, Grant “comes flying towards us with his
tail wagging quickly, and immediately wants to sit very close for pets when
he does come. He is definitely making progress and learning very well. We
understand that it’s not going to happen overnight, but we are very
understanding.” Grant gets along with the other dogs, but he especially
likes Mason, Skippy and Tucker. In fact, one evening this week, his handlers
had Grant out in the day room. He and Tucker were sitting together, doing
their commands, and “they seemed like good friends. They both showed their
submissiveness by lying down on their backs. Tucker has a lot of energy, and
it seemed to get Grant running around and wagging his tail. He was very
happy, and that definitely put smiles on our faces. Grant is a cute loveable
dog!”

Week 5
Both of his handlers report that it was a good week for Grant! They focused
on his “watch me” command, first without distractions, and then with
distractions. They are pleased to report that he was able to watch them in
both situations (the latter with treats). That’s a big milestone for this
little boy! As you read, his pal Margie took him for an outing last week.
His handlers were pleased with how well he did! Of course, Margie spoiled
this little guy a bit by giving him some lunch meat. Since he didn’t eat all
of it during their field trip, she gave the leftovers to his handlers in a
baggie for Grant to eat later. They put it on top of his crate, thinking it
was a safe place. Both of his handlers were out of the cell for a while and
when they returned, they noticed that Grant had gotten the baggie, opened it
up, and ate the rest of his treasure. “If you could have seen the eyes on
him when I asked him what happened to the meat treat. It was right out of a
movie. He’s a ham.” His other handler also commented on Grant’s “very cute
puppy eyes” that he uses when he wants his chin scratched or his ears
rubbed. Of course, both handlers can’t resist those eyes, and are rewarded
with him wagging his tail “a hundred miles an hour” for their efforts. Now,
Grant just needs a forever family to charm with those eyes. Could that be
you?

Week 4
Grant has had a fantastic week! He is learning a long list of commands
and loves to get treats for doing the right thing. Grant follows
directions very well and then settles in for some snuggle time with his
human friends. He also loves his doggie buddies, especially Tucker,
Skippy and Mason. After having plenty of playtime together, Grant
likes to cuddle up on his dog bed and use his soft, soccer ball toy as
a pillow.
Grant is really coming out of his shell. When he first arrived, he
only wanted to be in the safety of his crate. Nowadays, it's not
uncommon to see Grant taking his time on the cell block, enjoying a stroll
and greeting his many friends. This week, he even had a field trip out
to a nature trail. His friend Margie took him out on a trail to help
him build up his confidence. Although he was a little nervous in the
car, once he got on the trail, he was happy as a lark! His tail was
up, his body was relaxed and his little nose was hard at work exploring all
of the new smells. Grant is well on his way to feeling safe and secure
enough to head off to a home of his own.

Week 3
Grant was introduced to more people on the tier this week. His handlers had
different folks toss Grant treats to help him overcome his fears, and they
noticed that he’s coming out of his shell “little by little.” Grant showed
he was protective of his handlers a couple days by growling when people came
up to their door when his cellies were there. They are working with him to
correct this behavior, and Grant already is learning that “stop” means just
that! Grant will continue to work on this lesson, if necessary. This pup is
still working with all of the handlers in the program, and has no issues
with them Grant also started to eat treats other than cheese and peanut
butter this week. His handlers report that sometimes this pooch can be treat
motivated, and the next day he wants nothing to do with them. One sign that
Grant is coming around is he’s wagging his tail a lot more “and his tail
really wags.” His handlers notice it most when Grant is outside or sees his
buddy, Mason. We’re happy to hear how well you’re adjusting, little boy!

Week 2
Grant is still adjusting to his new world. He was a little stressed in the
beginning of the week, but as time went on, he got better getting to know
not only his main handlers, but also the other handlers in the program. In
fact, Grant is becoming accustomed to others taking him outside. Mind you,
he’s not as keen on the idea when his main handlers are in the cell, but
he’s adjusting! Grant has already learned that he must sit and wait before
going in or out of his cell, and his “downs” are a sight to be seen! He’s
still a little shy when out on the tier, but his handlers are working to
introduce him to new people within Grant’s comfort zone. “We don’t want to
put a lot of stress on him all at once. We’re taking baby steps with Grant.
Slowly, he’ll get better here.”

Week 1
Grant is already winning hearts at the jail. He's a very shy dog and
gets nervous around large groups of people, but he is a snugglebug when it's
just him and his handlers. He loves to be on their beds, but also
doesn't mind being in his crate. He doesn't even mind all of the loud
noises at the jail. Grant's handlers have discovered his love of
peanut butter and that has helped them to win him over. He's not ready
to take the peanut butter from anyone else yet, but that will come with time
and patience. Grant is a sweetheart who just needs some confidence to
find his way in the world.

UPDATE - 1/30/11
Grant entered the big house today to get started on his training.
Grant is frightened of new situations, but he was a very brave boy today and
eventually warmed up to his new cell mates. Once he gains some
confidence, he will make a wonderful pet. He is good with most other
dogs, loves children and is even good with cats. Grant is looking for
a quiet home without too many surprises so he'll be able to continue his
progress. Grant is a two year old
Australian Shepherd mix and is available for
adoption through Furry Friends
Network.
