Week 13
Gina’s handlers concentrated on her heeling and not jumping on people this
week. “She is doing well with both of these! She doesn’t jump up
automatically, only when she’s invited. If she does so when not invited, the
‘off’ command comes in handy. We’ve also found that a little leash tug and a
‘with me’ helps if she decides to pull on her leash while we’re walking
her.” Gina’s handlers gave her praise this week for her longer waits,
stronger sits and her down commands. She also comes to them when they call
to her. This pup “is at full attention” when she sees a bird, groundhog or
cat in the big yard. “She will try to get them…not violently, she’s just
interested.” Gina got some time at the prison style spa this week. “She
stayed cool in the pool on the hot days and played with Taz and Sky in the
dog runs. She is interacting just fine with all of the other dogs.” As you
know if you have been following her progress through the program, Gina had
no idea how to play with toys or enjoy treats when she came to the prison.
Her handlers gave her a gold star on her report card this week for
“playing/nibbling on her rawhide bone and soft squeaky toys.” They also
write that the only barrier to Gina’s adoption is that she is already
adopted! We’re very happy to report that Gina will be leaving the big house
for her forever home on Tuesday! She’s going to have three human brothers to
lavish her with affection and give her all of the squeaky toys that a pup
could ever want, but we’ll miss you. Thanks for being such a good ambassador
to the program, Miss Gina.

Week 12
Gina’s handlers report after their 2nd week with her, they have been working
on her reliability with her basic commands, and sitting politely for a pet
when meeting new people. “Gina has also been working on her confidence by
warming up to strangers and being in a playful mood instead of jumping on
them.” She also met Nyla, one of the new dogs to the program this week. They
were able to parallel walk with each other successfully, and got a few
sniffs in along the way. As we reported, Gina attended a meet and greet at
Pet Value at the West Shore Plaza last week. She was treated to a squeaky
elephant by one of the HOPE volunteers, and “she nibbles on it and likes
chasing it around.” One of Gina’s cellies reports that when she is playing
with him, “she is very fun. She runs and leaps around while nibbling on my
arm/hand very carefully. She is definitely cute!” In fact, this sweetheart
of a gal has “sparked the attention wherever she goes in the prison setting.
It was a good week for Gina!”

Week 11
Gina got new handlers, and “she warmed up to us quickly. As we bonded, we
worked on her watch me, sits, down/stay and heel commands.” This pup got to
have some fun time in the big doggie yard with her buddies Taz and Sky this
week. “She had a good old time leaping over them! Gina can run really run
fast. She also got into the little swimming pool to cool off on the hot
days. She is definitely mellow! We look forward to working with Gina. She
loves to give kisses and snuggle at any time!“ Gina attended her third HOPE
event at Pet Value at the West Shore Plaza on Saturday. Her new handlers
said in their journal this week that this girl’s shyness may be a barrier to
her adoption and her meeting as many people as possible would be a positive
part of her training. We wish they could have seen Gina at the event! She
acted as if she was an official greeter when customers came into the store,
and she soaked up all of the attention that she got. Her buddy Sky was also
at the event, and the two of them got along famously! Gina’s handlers are
quite right when they mention her love of kisses and snuggling. Not only did
she treat some of the customers to her sweet doggie kisses (with their
permission), she lavished affection on the HOPE volunteers. Gina sat on
their laps, and, like she did in Shippensburg, thought that sitting in one
of their chairs was the best! Gina is a true sweetheart who would probably
be best as the only dog in the household, or one with a doggie brother.
We’re HOPING that she finds one very soon. In the meantime, she’ll stay with
her prison “family” who will give her all of the snuggles that she so
enjoys!

Week 10
Gina’s handlers report that it was another interesting week with their
little girl! She not only is coming out of her shell, and making more eye
contact with her block mates, she helped Taz become a member of the pack.
“That was the biggest success this week. We had them together in the big dog
yard. They got along great! We have been walking them together and decided
to give it a chance, and let them off-leash. They played for two hours and
could barely move when they came inside. Needless to say, Gina slept well
that night.” This pup still has some issues with relating to the other
female dogs in the program, so her handlers plan to work on that issue in
the upcoming week. “All and all, Gina is doing great with training, building
a lot of confidence, play time and being a joy for all who cross her path.
We can’t wait until someone gives this great girl a great home.”

Week 9
Gina’s handlers had another great week with their pup! “She is developing a
fun personality. Once we have her figured out, she throws us a loop with
something new.” For some reason, Gina seems not to like tall men. Her
handlers take her around some of her larger block mates often to help her
with this comfort zone. “Once she gets to know them, she is fine and becomes
extremely friendly.” Gina and Sky continue to have a ball with each other in
the large doggie yard. “They run wild!” As much as they love having Gina in
their life, her handlers say that “it’s time for this girl to go. She
deserves the best and soon that someone will give it to her.”

Week 8
Gina’s handlers report that they had another fun week with her. She has been
getting along with all of the other dogs, but Sky is her favorite! Gina’s
handlers continued to work with her to boost her confidence level, and are
so proud of how she’s responded to their encouragement to be a brave little
girl. “She is really starting to love people more and more. She always loves
to be petted. She really is a gentle dog. Hopefully soon, she’ll find a good
home.”

Week 7
Her handlers say that “it was another great week with Gina. She has been
showing so much more personality.” Remember the girl who didn’t know how to
play or appreciate treats when she entered the program? “Gina has been
really playful in the early mornings, and is doing well with the other dogs.
She has been spending a lot of time with Sky. They seem really close and
it’s funny to see Sky’s face light up when he sees Gina. Usually, he jumps
right into her face and she gives him a playful boxer punch.” This pup is
also “doing great” in a crowd of people. She goes from person to person and
“deals” with them individually. Gina also has been chewing bones and chasing
toys around in her cell. We’re so proud that you can finally enjoy being a
dog, Miss Gina!

Week 6
Gina’s handlers report that “she has been coming out of her shell and is
definitely overcoming some of her lack of confidence.” This pup is still
learning how to play. Her handlers have her run back and forth between them,
and “she loves it!! She gets all excited and rolls on her back with her
tongue hanging out of her mouth exhausted.” One of Gina’s handlers says that
“she is my favorite! All of the rewards will be for the family, or person,
who adopts this wonderful doggy. I’m really going to miss her!!”

Week 5
“It was another fun and extremely hot week with Gina. We spent lots of time
outside walking her. She is doing great on a leash.” This pooch can still be
easily distracted….especially if there’s a groundhog or baby rabbit in her
sights, but she gives her handlers her attention when they give her a
correction on her leash. Gina works every night on her recalls on the block.
She has a fun time running between her friends! “Gina has been doing great
with the other dogs, and she even met our newest dog with a wagging tail.”
Remember the very shy girl who first entered the program? With her handlers’
guidance and love, Gina will now go to “everyone for a few seconds of
attention from them. She has also started to lay down for strangers.”
Sitting and laying down for people she doesn’t know may not sound like a
huge achievement, but her handlers say that “for Gina, it is a big leap.”
We wish that this pup’s handlers could have seen her on Saturday at Furry
Friends Day at the Shippensburg Township Park! She was a doll! Gina was a
little lady accepting the pets and all of the “oohing and aahing” that she
received from the folks who paid her a visit. She did well with all of the
sights and sounds that she encountered…her nose never stopped moving! We
reported before that Gina thinks herself as a lap dog. On the way to the
event, she decided that the lap of one of the HOPE volunteers was the place
to be, much to the volunteer’s delight! After a short rainstorm during the
event, one of the volunteers got chilly. She asked Gina to come keep her
warm, and this pup obliged. Another friendly word of warning. Somewhere in
her past, Gina must have had a chair of her own, because she nudged one of
the volunteers out of theirs so that she could have it all to herself! Keep
being your cute self, Gina!

Week 4
“Gina did great this week!” This pup continued to come out of her shell, and
was more playful. “She goes crazy when she plays with Lilo, and chases him
around. She is such a calm dog that it’s actually weird to see her play.”
Gina also started to learn that treats are good things, but she still isn’t
too sure about toys. As for her training, her handlers report that this pup
walks by their sides, even when she’s not on a leash, and her recalls are
great! Gina still is praise motivated, since she’s not a treat kind of gal.
This puppy mill pup is doing well, and we’re very proud of her!

Week 3
Gina’s handlers report that “she is such a good, mellow doggy. She is calm
and easily loved.” This week, Gina worked on her wait, come, down and
sit/stay commands. “She is gaining confidence, and she understands her
commands more each week.” Good girl! As her handlers told us last week, Gina
is learning that play can be fun. “Just the other day, she was lying on her
back and was spinning around chasing a rope.” Gina can still be shy around
loud noises, so her handlers are taking her out on the block to introduce
her to different people and sounds. They’re happy to report that she’s
getting better each day! “Gina is so fun to be around. She always wants to
be loved and petted. She especially likes when you pet her on her hind legs,
for some reason. She really likes that. All in all, Gina will make someone a
great member of their family.” Gina had her first outing as a HOPE
ambassador at the Dogapalooza event sponsored by the Helen O. Krause
Foundation at Little Buffalo State Park on Saturday. She did her handlers
proud! She wasn’t shy at all about accepting pets from people of all ages
and sizes, and gave some of them kisses as if to say thanks for the
attention! She also did well with most of the other dogs (also of all ages
and sizes). This pup was quiet, but attentive to the HOPE volunteers. Gina
took some long walks, and was even brave enough to test the waters in the
creek that runs through the park! She was a sweetheart, and we’re proud of
her handlers for helping her come out of her shell and not be fearful of all
of the people who came to visit her. For anyone interested in adopting Gina,
a friendly “warning.” She thinks herself as a lap dog! Here’s to your
forever home, Gina!

Week 2
Gina is slowly coming out of her shell and she had another great week at the
jail. Gina has mastered her sit command and now sits to have her leash
put on and also at doorways without even being asked. She is a little
unsure of some of her other training which seems to coincide with her lack
of self confidence. Gina is trying her best though and with time,
patience and lots of praise she will begin to trust those around her to take
care of her and keep her safe. She showed some newfound bravery this
week by walking through a crowd and greeting various people for a sniff and
a pet. She isn't as comfortable with crowds moving toward her, but
it's still early on in her training and her handlers will introduce those
new challenges slowly. Gina is learning to play with toys and enjoy
chewing on a bone. Most times, her handlers have to romp and play
along with her to help her realize the toys are fun and safe, but they say
they don't mind at all. Her handlers also made an effort to have the
other handlers in the program work with Gina. It made them smile to
see how quick she was to trust and work with people other than them.
Overall, she had a solid week and her handlers are very happy with her
progress.

Week 1
It’s Gina’s first week in the program, and her handlers say that “first off,
we cannot understand how anyone would not love this dog. She’s been great.
Gina is such a calm dog. Her favorite place is on the bunk.” Her handlers
folded a blanket next to the mattress on the bottom bunk, and Gina goes
there as soon as she enters their cell. Her handlers started in on some
training exercises, such as her sit, down, in (for doorways), and leave it
skills. Gina also learned that being in her crate is a good thing. “She was
hesitant at first, but now goes [into it] when she’s asked to do so.” This
pup also worked on her leash walking a bit, but “we didn’t want to push Gina
too hard this first week because we wanted her to get comfortable and build
trust with her. She is adjusting very well, and loves that everyone wants to
pet her.” Gina still isn’t sure of her toys, play with the other dogs, or
even receiving treats. “All this pretty girl wants is someone to love her up
and hug her.” Her handlers plan to continue to build up this pup’s
confidence, and most importantly, her trust of people during her time in the
program. “We look forward to continuing to work on Gina’s manners and
training so that she can get to a loving home that she deserves.”
