Week 17
Georgie's handlers are so proud that their little one has found his forever
home! "His new family is getting a great dog. I just hope his new family
knows that he can be very lazy at times." Okay, so he can be lazy at times.
Georgie's handlers know that he's come a long way during his time at the
prison. He has not only exceeded with his skills, but he has also learned
that new toys are fun! We'll miss you, Georgie, Peorgie! Be well in your new
home!

Week 16
Georgie's handlers not only continued to go over his basic skills this week,
they worked on his come and stay commands. "He did very well with them!"
During Georgie's time at the prison, his handlers report that they've only
seen him play with two toys...his beloved stuffed fox and his rope. "Well,
this week, I had Georgie chasing a flat football around the yard. It was
funny seeing a little dog with a big football in his mouth. While he was
running with it, he fell over another toy, got back up and barked at the toy
he fell over!" Georgies's handlers know that he'll do well in his new home.
Although he found a new toy this week, "he is not a dog that likes to run
around a lot. He's more of a lap dog than anything." Everyone is going to
miss this pup when he leaves the prison, but we're so happy that he's found
someone whose lap he can call his very own!

Week 15
Georgie is headed home in a couple of weeks so his handlers are putting him
through his paces with a refresher course so that all of his skills are in
tip-top shape when he finally heads off to his new family. Hopefully,
they'll allow him on their bed just like his handlers do. This week,
Georgie took quite a liking to sleeping on his handler's pillow. He
wasn't too keen on sharing it. After all, his handler has the rest of
the bed. But, Georgie was quick to relent and found another spot on the bed
where he could curl up with his handler and get a good night's sleep.

Week 14
Georgie worked on his sits and stays this week. His handlers report that
"his sits are good, but his stays are so-so. This is something that we work
on a lot with him." Georgie will now do all of his commands without a
treat...another area that his handlers worked hard on with him! This pup
found a new friend in Falkor to run around with him this week! "They seem to
enjoy chasing each other around the yard. Georgie has come a long way since
he's been here. He has learned how to play with other dogs and to play nice.
He's ready to be able to find a home he can call his own." We couldn't agree
with your handlers more, Georgie Peorgie!

Week 13
This week, Georgie's handlers worked with him with distractions during his
training. This pup is food-motivated, so his handlers are working with him
to do his commands without them because "if you have treats there's not an
issue with the distractions. When it comes to any treat, Georgie will be
focused on you, and only you." His handlers also have been working on his
"stay" command this week. "When we have Georgie out back of the block, we
drop the leash, and he will stay with us." Good boy! His handlers also
report that Rip Van Winkle, or Georgie, as he's known in the program, loves
to sleep on their beds at night, but he doesn't like being under the
blankets. "if he doesn't have enough room on the bed, he will take his legs
and try to push you out of his way." The HOPE program was fortunate to get a
special invitation to Sanzi's Hair Design and Day Spa's Customer
Appreciation Party last weekend. Georgie attended, and once again was a good
little ambassador! He wasn't too sure at first when a lot of people
approached him, but once he got used to his surroundings, he relished the
attention that he got...and of course his tail never stopped wagging! His
handlers say, "Georgie is ready to be adopted. He's learned a lot in his
time here." We couldn't agree more, little boy!

Week 12
Georgie got a new handler this week, and it didn't seem to bother him at
all! Georgie has been working on his commands with all of the handlers in
the program. This pup will do his commands for some of them, but not for
others. His main handlers are going to continue to work on this because they
want him to be able to succeed with everyone in the program. Georgie also
still has a tendency to go up to the fence and let folks know that he's
still up for adoption. His handlers have been putting him on-leash and
walking him up and down the fence when people are walking outside to curb
his vocal enthusiasm! "It seems to be working so far, but the real test will
be when he's not on the leash." Last week, Georgie's handlers reported that
he really likes to sleep. One day, "Georgie must have been having a dream.
His legs were moving like he was running, and he was barking all in his
sleep." Maybe Georgie was dreaming of running in the yard at his forever
home. We HOPE you find one soon, little one!

Week 11
Since Georgie has been around the block for awhile, he really has no issues,
except when the Correction Officers walk by him outside of the fence.
Georgie, those CO's are there to help you...you have nothing to fear! This
pup continues to work on his loose-leash walking, and "it's working at a
slow pace." Those of us who have walked Georgie know that his nose will take
him where he wants to go, so we understand from where his handlers speak!
Okay, so walking on-leash can still be a challenge at times, but his sits,
stays, prays and give paws and downs are sights to be seen! In addition to
his commands, Georgie learned that "strange" clothes on the tier floor are
there for a reason, and not to be feared! "Georgie sleeps a lot...man, I
never knew a dog who sleeps this much, and Georgie must be having some crazy
dreams. Just the other day, Georgie woke up out of a dead sleep and fell off
one of the bunks. He just stared at us like we were the ones that pushed him
onto the floor." After making sure that Georgie was okay, his handlers were
able to get a chuckle out of his antics (and dirty looks)! One of his
caregivers also enjoys watching Georgie go up to people he doesn't know. "I
think it's really funny how Georgie approaches people walking sideways, tail
wagging like crazy. If he doesn't know you, he'll let you pet him sideways."
As we reported before, Georgie doesn't like people towering over him, so
approaching them sideways may just be his way of letting them know his
comfort zone. No matter how he comes to strangers, to meet Georgie is to
love him. Could you be the one to put in an application and fall in love?
Georgie and his handlers HOPE so!

Weeks 9 & 10
Georgie is doing better now that he's settled in with his new handler. This
pup continues to thrive in his training! His recall has reached a distance
of 20 feet or more, and he's "very good" with his sit, down, stay and paw
commands. In fact, Georgie's handlers are so pleased with his standard
commands, that they've taught him how to touch, pray, and dance a bit!
Georgie is still treat-motivated, so his handlers have been giving him
treats only occasionally to wean him off of them. "He seems to be
comprehending the new treat system." Georgie has also been "hanging out"
with Shelby since she arrived at the prison, and he thinks that she's a
pretty nifty addition to his pack! Georgie attended Furry Friends Network's
Mutt Mixer in Lancaster last Saturday, and was an absolute doll! He is a
quiet boy, who loved laying on a blanket (or the asphalt), and soak up the
all of the loving that he received from both the HOPE volunteers and his
adoring public Georgie even happily participated in a photo-op on behalf of
PetGuardians! On Sunday, he got a special furlough to attend the HOPE dog
reunion! One of Georgie's favorite places was the doggie pool where the pups
could bob for hot dog treats and tennis balls. Georgie thought that the hot
dogs treats were the best, and he actually blew bubbles in the water to get
them! If you think that this sweetheart may be for you, you only have to
look at our
Facebook site to see the picture of him in the stamp cut-out to see
what a cutie he is. Who could resist those paws and smiling face? We HOPE
that someone can’t resist very soon, Georgie Peorgie!

Weeks 7 & 8
Georgie also got a new handler. Although he was a little hesitant of him at
first, Georgie came to realize that it was okay to have him in his circle of
friends after just a short time! This pooch has mastered his "shake paw"
command so well, that he will now give both paws to his handlers! Georgie's
stays are also improving at longer distances both with the sit/stay and
down/stay commands. His handlers say that his recall skill seems to work the
best when there is a treat to be had, especially when there are a lot of
distractions around him. Georgie has been quite the little ambassador for
the HOPE program since our last update! This pup doesn't like people
"looming" over him, so the HOPE volunteers ask his adoring public to get
down on his level before petting him. Georgie soaks up the attention he
receives from people of all ages! He is a quiet soul, who takes treats very
nicely with a loving look in his eyes. He also loves going for walks (and
sniffs every inch of the way), and just curls up for a rest in the car while
going to and from the HOPE events. Georgie is forever wagging his little
tail, and we can't wait until his little tail is wagging in his forever
home!

Week 6
Georgie learned to "shake paw" with this handlers this week! They have been
working on this command for about two weeks, but as our handlers sometimes
say, "patience is a virtue." Georgie found a toy that he particularly likes,
and he'll play with it for hours. "It's funny to watch him shake the rope
around. He loves to play tug of war with us." Although he's not quite ready
to share his toy with his pack mates, Georgie does love his outdoor time
with them! He loves chasing Dutch around the yard. Since Georgie is so much
smaller than Dutch, he can't catch him, but that doesn't deter this pup from
trying to keep up with his friend! He also loves his time in the yard with
Cody. "Dutch and Cody are his play buddies." You go, Georgie!

Week 5
Georgie continued to work on his commands without treats this week He's
doing pretty well with his sits and stays, but his downs are still a bit on
his learning curve without a yummy incentive. We know that you'll get it,
Georgie! This pup still is quite enamored with one of his handlers, so he's
been interacting with some of the other handlers while his favorite one is
out of his sight. As a result, Georgie is learning that life with more than
one person is a very good thing! Georgie still likes to greet people at the
fence for a friendly "hello," but his handlers are working on him to ease
this habit. This pup got into a little mischief this week. He found some
Jolly Ranchers that his handlers had in their cell, and thought that they
were special treats just for him! His handlers quickly taught him that they
were "people treats," and were able to take them away from him with a "leave
it" command. All was well. Actually, Georgie practices his 'leave it"
command everyday, and as told by this story, he knows it like the back of
his paw! Keep up the good work, little boy!

Week 4
Since Georgie is feeling better, his handlers got back to his homework
assignments by continuing to work on his "sits," "down," and "stay"
commands. He'll sit without a treat but, his "downs without one are still
so-so." Georgie got a bath this week, and took it very well! One of his
handlers put him in the pool and he laid down in the water. A tip to any
potential adopters...Georgie doesn't like the water if it's cold! "His ears
seem to be getting a lot better and he is becoming very playful again. He
loves to chase Dutch around the yard. It's really funny seeing him chase a
big dog around." We're glad you're back to your sweet self, Georgie!

Week 3
Georgie worked on his "sit," "down," and "stay" commands this week, and is
getting better at them! His "downs" still need some work, but he's learning.
Like Dutch, Georgie likes to go to the fence in the yard and let people know
that he's working on being adopted and would like their attention. That will
be another homework assignment for Georgie. His leash manners are very good,
and he's getting used to other people on the block, other than his main
handler, touching him. This week, Georgie got his very own blanket. "It was
funny watching him try to get it balled up just right." This pup was a
little under the weather later this week, so having a soft blanket to curl
up in while his handler gave him some special TLC was just his cup of tea.
After a trip to the vet and a few medications, he's feeling much, much
better now. His sore ears must have been just awful, but he's all
fixed up now and ready for school!

Week 2
Georgie's handler learned this week that he can be a bit protective of his
person. While in the yard, his handler was paying some attention to Dutch
and he noticed that Georgie wasn't wild about the idea. He wasn't loud about
it, he just didn't like the fact that Dutch was taking his handler's time
away from him. As a result, Georgie is now spending some time with some of
our other handlers in the yard to get him acclimated to being trained by
people other than his "cellie." Georgie also frightened of having his rear
end or back legs touched. His handler has been working with him on this
issue by petting him, moving towards his hind quarters, saying "no" and
treating him when he doesn't react. "It seems to be working very well, and
he doesn't need treats now!" Since it's only Georgie's second week in the
program, he's still getting used to meeting all of the new people in his
world. He tends to yell hello with a bark, but his handler thinks it's
because he's still learning about life at the prison. His handler has a
stranger approach Georgie, kneel down and give him a treat. After that,
Georgie lets the new person approach him without barking! Good boy! Keep
listening to your handler, Georgie. He only has your best interests and a
forever home for you in your future on his mind!

Week 1
Georgie's handler reports that when he first arrived, "the Big House was
full of new people and different noises" for him. But, this pup got right
into his training by working on his sits, down, drop it and leave it
commands. The latter two commands are what Georgie's handler is
concentrating on most right now. He's also getting help from the other
handlers to make his time at the prison safe and secure. At first, Georgie
would only exchange one of his toys for a treat, but now he's doing so
without at treat! Good boy, Georgie! His handler reports that Georgie has no
issues with any of the other dogs in the program, but he prefers his smaller
pack mates when playing in the yard. And although he doesn't mind getting
wet, he hasn't quite mastered his doggie pool techniques just yet. One of
the things that Georgie definitely knows is his favorite resting places! "He
loves to sleep on my bed and not let any room for me to lay down. When I
make him move he'll turn around and look and at me and then gets down and
lays on the floor." You're safe with your handler, Georgie, keep up the good
work!

UPDATE - 8/8/10
Georgie headed to the big house today to start his training. This
little guy is such a sweetheart and we hope his stay with us will be very
productive and very short. He's a sweet boy in need of a second
chance. Stay tuned for updates on his
progress!
