UPDATE - 11/1/10
Dutch has been enjoying some down time with his rescue, which turned out to
be just the ticket to finding a home of his own. This week, he met his
perfect match and we hope for the very best for him in his new home.

Week 16
Dutch has had enough of prison life for awhile so he's enjoying some "fall
camp" time back in foster care with his rescue. All of us who have met this
handsome boy, will miss seeing his smiling face and taking him on field
trips. You're a charmer, sweet Dutch, and we HOPE the right family comes
along for you very soon!

Weeks 14 & 15
Dutch is still working to keep his four paws on the floor while meeting
people. Although it still can be hard for him, he's learning. He has
mastered all of his basic commands, and "does them with no problems." One of
the things that Dutch absolutely loves is to be out and about in the great
outdoors! When HOPE volunteer Margie went to pick him up for a field trip,
Dutch was so excited to see her that she had to give him a few leash
corrections on their way out of the prison. Dutch thought that he was in
doggie heaven when they got to the park! Margie and Dutch had a great time
once again exploring the area! There was a soccer tournament going on while
they were there, and Dutch "did amazingly well with so much activity."
Dutch, actually, was "more interested in sniffing than in everything else
that was going on." Margie says that this pup loved the creek that runs
through the park. "At every opportunity, he wanted, to wade in it, cool off
and get a drink. Along the way, we practiced some sits, downs, stay and come
commands, and he did really well, even with all of the distractions." Dutch
was a very good boy walking back to the block. He walked right by Margie's
side on a nice, loose leash! Dutch is such a loving pup. We HOPE that he
finds a family to take him on the walks that he loves, and to appreciate
just what a sweet addition he will be to their home.

Weeks 12 & 13
Dutch was introduced to a new cellie since our last report, and he had a
good time getting to know him! Both of his handlers have been working with
Dutch to remember to keep his four paws on the floor when meeting and
greeting people, and he does better with the concept each day! Dutch knows
all of his basic commands, and does "very good" with them. When school
dismisses for the day, Dutch's handlers really enjoy their quiet time with
him. Everyone in the HOPE program loves this sweet boy, and will miss him
when he finds his true niche in his life. Dutch has been ready for parole
for quite some time, and we can't wait until we can tell you that he's
leaving the "big house" for his forever home!

Week 11
Dutch's handlers say that "he is doing really good with all of his
commands." In fact, Dutch has mastered his sit, stay and down lessons so
well, his handlers taught him how to roll over, give paw and give both paws
this week! Dutch's leash manners and his tendency to jump on people also
improved since his handlers' last report! This pup will do his commands for
his cellies without treats, but he "rebels" a bit when the other handlers
take him through his drills without them. "His recalls are very good, even
when the volunteers are here." As you know, Dutch is quite the "ladies' dog"
when it comes to the HOPE volunteers! His handlers report that "Dutch is
ready to be adopted." We couldn't agree with his handlers more, and HOPE
that he finds his family very soon!

Week 10
This week, Dutch continued to work on not pulling while on-leash, and
politely greeting people with four paws on the floor. He also worked on his
sits, stays and retrieve commands. Dutch still waits with anticipation to
see his HOPE volunteer friends when they pay a visit to the block! This pup
also loves to play! Dutch is very energetic, and thinks that going out into
the yard to romp with all of his pack members is the best thing since string
cheese! If you would like to give this playful pup a forever home, please
put in an application. He's a keeper!

Week
9
Dutch is doing really well with his "leave it," "watch me," and "sit/stay"
commands! His handlers are still working on his pulling and jumping up on
people, but Dutch is getting better in those areas as well. This pup loves
running in the play yard with his canine buddies. Dutch also loves when the
HOPE volunteers come to the prison! Sometimes he shows his disappointment
when he realizes that he's not the pup going on an outing, but his handlers
give him some extra TLC to make him feel better. HOPEfully, you'll find your
family soon, Dutch, and will be forever paroled!
Field Trip Alert (as told by HOPE Volunteer Margie) - I
had Dutch out a couple of times over the Labor Day weekend and we had a
great time. On Friday we went to South Middleton Park as well as to the
Boiling Springs lake where Dutch got to watch the ducks (that was really
exciting). We practiced loose leash walking and after about the first 10
minutes or so, he did very well. Dutch gets really excited when something
is new and it takes a few minutes for him to settle down, but then he's
fine. We walked thru the park, met several dogs along the way and he's just
so cute when he sees another dog coming his way. He gets down into a low
crawl and kind of waits for the other dog to approach. Then depending on
the other dog, he either tries to play or he just sniffs politely and then
moves on. We passed several people along the way either walking or
jogging. At first Dutch tried to pull and jump as we passed the person, so
I had him sit and stay when I saw the next jogger coming. As our walk
continued, Dutch got the idea - if someone was coming and he veered in the
person's direction at all, I told him "aah aah - with me" and there he was,
at my side. At the end of the walk, Dutch got a drink from the creek and
then we did some creek walking. I could tell he wasn't too sure about it at
first but then he got the hang of it and seemed to enjoy it. On the way back
to the prison, when we stopped to visit another volunteer, I thought Dutch
did really well in the store and he was especially polite when he sat to
meet her boss. Then when we got back to the prison and were walking to the
block, we continued to practice the "with me" command. Dutch stayed by my
side and did a very impressive job.
On Monday we ventured out again and this time went to City Island to the
Native American festival. When we got there I wondered if it was going to
be too much for the boy, but Dutch was amazing. There were so many people
there and Dutch got to experience so much. There were both adults and kids,
joggers, bikes, carts. There was lots of noise and we were in very close
proximity to everything going on. There was music and dancing and lots of
vendors. I kept Dutch close to me and he performed like a pro. He's really
getting the "with me" command down pat. He didn't seem to be bothered by
anything. In fact a gentleman commented on how well behaved he was. After
that performance we had to stop at Bruster's. Dutch got the usual doggie
cup and as he was happily licking away, the look on his face said it all -
what a great way to end the weekend!

Week 8
This week, Dutch's handlers continued to work on his basic commands. What
they really concentrated on was his being a talker on the block and at the
fence surrounding the yard. Dutch loves attention! His handlers have found
that putting him on-leash for a bit is the ticket! When Dutch is calm and
settles, his handlers let him have some play time. Even though his handlers
still train him each week on his sits and stays, this boy is oh, so ready
for his forever home. Would you be willing to give him one?

Program by CLICKING HERE

Week 7
Dutch is improving on his loose-leash walking. He sits on command, does his
lays and stays and he is learning the fine art of greeting people with four
paws on the ground. Other folks on the block will approach Dutch, tell him
"off" and when successful, Dutch is rewarded for his efforts. His handlers
continue to use a toy instead of treats as Dutch's incentive during his
training. He'll now even drop his treasure and "leave it" when his handlers
tell him to do so! Good boy, Dutch! This pup gets along with all of his pack
members. He and Ginger are still testing the waters, but he and Georgie have
"pretty much become best buds." Dutch also loves quiet time with his
handlers. He especially loves to watch Animal Planet on TV with them! Is
there anyone out there willing to snuggle up to this sweet soul and watch
his favorite program with him? We HOPE so!
Field Trip Alert (as told by HOPE Volunteer Margie) -
We went back to the park and again we ended up walking in the rain. I let
Dutch have the long lead and he did very well with it. If I was going one
way and he was going another, I'd just tell him "this way" and he'd turn
and come along. We only ran into one person on the trail and he had two
dogs. The trail was narrow, there was nowhere to go and I wasn't real sure
how Dutch was going to react. Of course he did the unexpected - he went
flat on the ground and stayed there until the dogs approached him and then
everyone sniffed politely and we kept going. We practiced his commands
while we were walking and then practiced some more off leash in the fenced
in area. I also tried playing hide and seek with Dutch. I'd wait until he
was off sniffing and then run and hide behind a trash can. It's a little
tough playing hide and seek with Dutch though - he barely lets you out of
his sight before he comes running over to you. When we left the park, both
of us were pretty wet. Dutch hadn't experienced Bruster's yet that I know
of, so we headed over there. The sun was finally out and he really enjoyed
his ice cream as the two of us dried out. Then it was time to work a little
bit. We crossed the road and walked up and down the Capitol City Mall
parking lot practicing the "with me " command the whole way. I had a
harness on Dutch and he did VERY well. Once we got back to the prison, the
harness came off and I told Dutch we were going to continue to practice
"with me " all the way back to the block. I used a few leash corrections,
but he did unbelievably well. In fact, an officer was watching as we walked
thru the yard. He waved and yelled "now that's a good dog". It just made
me smile. His handler should be very proud.

Week 7
Dutch "has been doing very good on his recalls, sits and downs. He still
needs some work on his stays, but he has been making progress on it." Dutch
also "is getting the hang of rolling over." Instead of treats, his handlers
are using toys as an incentive for him to do the command, "because he likes
them so much." Dutch also is really coming along with his "with me" command!
If you have been following our pups' journeys either on the website or on
our Facebook page, you know that we have three new dogs in the program.
Dutch is going with the flow while meeting his new canine buddies, and we
couldn't be more proud of him! We know that someone will love you as much as
our handlers and we do, Dutch! Keep on moving on!
Field Trip Alert (as told by HOPE Volunteer Margie) - Dutch
did pretty well today. We went over to Lower Allen Park and walked in the
rain - Dutch didn't seem to mind at all. I used a harness because he was
pulling a lot and that seemed to help quite a bit. Dutch really enjoyed
sniffing everything. There was a soccer game going on (small kids). We
walked up and down the sidelines and Dutch did react a couple of times, but
I was able to get his attention pretty quickly and we practiced some sits
and the watch command. After the park, we went over to PetSmart. We walked
up and down the aisles and again Dutch was having a ball sniffing. He was
especially interested in the squeaky toys. He met a couple of people. He
didn't jump on anyone, but he had a real hard time sitting for pets. We ran
across a small dog and Dutch wanted to play. A young girl and her mother
were with the other dog but Dutch was only interested in the dog and didn't
even seem to notice the little girl. Then we walked over to Home Depot
and walked thru the nursery area where he tried to meet everyone who passed
by him. Overall, Dutch did well. If his handlers keep working on his loose
leash walking and keeping some of his exuberance under control, he'll be a
star!
On the way back to the prison, Dutch had his 2 front paws hanging over the
back of the front seat. He leaned forward and gently licked the side of my
face as if to say "thank you".

Week 6
Dutch had a review of his basic commands this week. His handler worked on
his no-pull walking through a "crowd of people." As a result, Dutch now
knows that he can only go up to his adoring fans (and there are many) for
some pets when he's told to do so. Stays in the yard continue to be a
particular forte of Dutch's, and he also continues to enjoy his "happy crate
time!" One day, Dutch earned the title of "Canine Assistant HOPE Handler!"
He and Duke were out in the yard together. Before Duke's handler could take
off his leash, Dutch took hold of it, and he and Duke went for a walk
together around the yard! "It was pretty funny to see one dog taking another
for a walk." Another Kodak moment for the human HOPE handlers. Keep being
your cute self, Dutch!

Week 5
Dutch decided one day that his "cage" [crate] was for the birds when his
handlers went about their day. So, his handlers put it on their homework
list right away and after just a few days of "happy crate time," Dutch is
back to his old self. Dutch now knows that being in his crate
while alone is a-okay! This pup's sit command went from being "better" to
"very good" since our last report, but his stays are his biggest
achievement. One of his handlers reports that "while in the yard, I can have
him in a stay and I'll walk to the other end of the yard without him
moving." Everyone is absolutely in love with this boy. There's no need
for him to stay much longer since he's such a quick study. All he
needs a home to call his own. Way to go, Dutch!

Week 4
Dutch continued to work on his basic commands this week. His handlers report
that his "stays" are better, his "sits" are good, but his "downs are touch
and go." They'll keep working with him in that department, as well as his
no-pull walking. One of Dutch's handlers has been mixing his lessons with
his play time. "I let him play and then will call him and make him work for
about 5 minutes and then let him go play again. When Dutch and Casey are in
the yard, it's like Casey is another dog. I like it that Dutch is helping
Casey come out of his shell." Dutch got a furlough from the prison to attend
the Dog Days of Summer Adoptathon event at Country Comfort Kennels & Pet Day
Camp in Shrewsbury on Sunday. The venue also serves as the headquarters of
Diamond Dog Rescue that sponsored Dutch into the HOPE program. He had a
grand time playing with his old friends and meeting some new ones! So many
dogs, so little time! This boy is truly a handsome sweetheart of a pup, and
we know that he'll soon find the family of his dreams to call his very own!

Week 3
Dutch's handlers are happy to report that after a couple of days of working
with him, this pup got the "paw" command down pat! They also continued to
work on his "sit," "down" and "stay" skills, only this time they did it
without treats. "He did very good with them." One of Dutch's handlers was
able to put his excellent recalls to work this week. "While getting ready to
go out, Dutch thought it would be funny to run out of the cell. Another door
was open and he went through it. All I did was call him, and he came right
back to me." Dutch has no issues with any of the other dogs. "He really
likes playing with Casey, Duke and Justin." Keep listening to your handlers,
Dutch. We HOPE that you'll find your forever home soon, handsome boy!

Week 2
Dutch's handlers continued to learn about his strengths and weaknesses this
week. Dutch is a star with his recall skills! Every time his handlers call
to him, Dutch comes right to them! His sits and downs are coming along, as
well as his leash walking. Dutch hasn't quite mastered the "paw" command
yet. Sometimes, he gets a a little help from his handlers to learn the
concept, but Dutch is improving in this area as well! This past week was a
little hot for this pup's liking, so his handlers adjusted his time out in
the yard. They report that Dutch seemed grateful for the respite and they're
looking out for his comfort zone. When the temperatures cooled off, Dutch
loved playing in the yard with his best pal, Casey. "They play very well
together." We're looking forward to hearing how our newbie progresses in the
program. You're doing great, Dutch!

Week 1 The first week
for Dutch was full of new sounds and faces. He's still learning about life
in the big house, but overall, he's adapting well! He barked a bit at first
when his handlers went to work, but they assured Dutch that all was well and
he's calmer when they're away from their cell. Dutch worked on his
leash-walking, basic commands and not jumping on people this week. Dutch
didn't have any issues at all with learning that the other dogs in the
program are great playmates! He loves being out in the doggie yard with Chi
Chi, Justin, Todd and Casey. "Casey and Dutch play very well together and
it's funny watching them run around the yard. He's also very friendly to
strangers that come up to him." One of Dutch's handlers told a HOPE
volunteer that after just having him for a couple of days, "I'm already in
love." The HOPE volunteer felt the same emotion after spending time with
Dutch on her way from his rescue to his venture into the prison. Could
there be someone out there willing to fall in love with this sweet boy as
well? We HOPE so!

UPDATE - 6/17/10
Dutch is headed to the big house today. He's a big fella' with a great
personality. He's getting started on his training so he can be a
shining example for the other dogs at his rescue of what a little hard work
and effort can do. Dutch is the first dog from his rescue to go
through the program and we have high hopes for this boy. Dutch
is a one and a half year old German Shepherd mix and is available for
adoption through Diamond Dog
Rescue.
