Update - 1/8/11
Cody's new year started off in a terrific way. He has found a new home
and we're hopeful that this will be just what he needs for a happy ever
after! Good luck, Cody.
Update - 9/30/10
We're sad to say that Cody didn't get the happy ending he was hoping for.
He is back with his rescue and ready and waiting for a home of his very own.
We have all of our fingers and paws crossed for him and wish him the best.
If he doesn't find a home soon, you'll likely see him making friends inside
the big house once again.

Week 7
Cody's handlers report that he's doing "great with this sit, down, stay,
wait, and down and wait commands!" He still needs some work on his four paws
on the ground technique while meeting people routines, but he's showing
progress each day in those areas as well! Cody's handlers reward him with
some fun time in the yard for being such a good student! This pup really
loves a good romp in the yard! "He is a great dog, and he will make a great
pet." Cody is officially adopted, and we want to thank his handlers for
leading him down the path to his forever home!

Week
6
Cody got a refresher course in his basic commands this week. He also made a
lot of progress with his loose-leash walking! His handlers can't say the
same about Cody's greeting people with four paws on the floor, however.
"Cody thinks that walking on two paws is the way to meet them. We will
continue to work on that." They will also continue to work on Cody's
tendency to "mouth" the folks on the block. "He has his good days and his
bad days, and we are trying to stop this behavior." If you have been
following Cody's story, you know that he has "a ton of energy." His handlers
say that he "loves to run and play. His favorite game is tug of war. Cody
loves everyone, and gets along with all of the other dogs." Now, all this
bundle of energy needs is a family to call his very own. Could that be you?

Week 5
Cody's handlers worked with him this week to master his sit, stay, down and
loose leash walking skills. Cody continues to be a high-energy dog, but his
handlers are working to keep him focused. They say that he does better at
focusing while in isolated areas without distractions from other people.
Cody also plays well with all of the other dogs, and "improves weekly!"
After just four weeks in the program, Cody was the HOPE Ambassador at CPAA's
Yappy Hour event sponsored by Doc Holliday's and Frozen Woofys this past
Tuesday! His handlers would have been very proud of him! In fact, Cody was
so good, he should get an A+ on his report card this week! Not only did he
do well with the distractions he encountered, the HOPE volunteers could tell
that he has learned his homework assignments very well! At first he wasn't
too sure about the live music, but he quickly settled into his new
environment. Cody loved meeting all of the people and dogs that were there!
He also thought that looking at himself in a window to see the "other" puppy
was pretty neat...silly boy! Cody took a long walk, and after some
re-direction, he excelled with his loose-leash walking after just a few
steps. Cody didn't bark once, even with all of the new things he
experienced. He took treats gently, and was just a sweetheart of a boy!

Week 4
Cody continued to work on his loose leash walking and his basic commands
this week. He also got to work on his four feet on the floor exercises. Cody
loves all of the attention he's getting at the prison, and is friendly to
everyone he meets! Sometimes, he "mouths" new people, but his handlers are
working on directing him another way. As a result, he's doing much better
with this issue every day. Cody thinks that playing in the yard with
his pack mates is the best! Since he's smaller than some of his other canine
friends, his handlers keep a close watch to make sure things don't get too
crazy. Cody continues to step up to the plate, and loves playing with his
bigger canine buddies. His handlers report that "Cody loves people and
loves to play. He is very smart." Keep up the good work, little boy!

Week 3
This week, Cody's handlers continued to reinforce his basic commands. He was
so eager to learn, they added "roll over" into his routine and Cody got it
down pat! He still needs some work on his "shake" and "loose leash walking,"
but Cody is still a puppy at heart so he prefers to play rather than
concentrate on his homework. Because he has so much energy, Cody's handlers
let him run and play for about 20 minutes before working with him on his
skills. They also did away with treats while working on his basic commands.
This week, Cody will continue to work on his basics, but he continues to
show improvement. He also likes to entertain his handlers by dancing on his
back legs! They report that "overall, Cody is doing great!"

Week 2
As Cody's handlers reported last week, they decided that his "shake" and
"loose leash" walking would be on their list of commands to teach him. Cody,
being the smart pup that he is, learned these skills quickly! In fact, he
did so well that his handlers decided to add Cody's "with me" command into
his training as well. Cody still showed the puppy side of his personality
with his energy and zest for life, but he has continued to progress after
just two weeks in the program. You're doing great, Cody!

Week 1
Our handlers normally report that the first week with their pup is a
"honeymoon period" for them to get acquainted with their dog and vice-versa.
After Cody's second day at the prison, he was so well-adjusted to his new
environment, that his handlers got started on his training! Cody worked on
his sit, down and stay commands, "which he took to very quickly because he
is very smart. Being a puppy, he has a ton of energy, so we let him run it
off in the yard for about 15 minutes, and then we train him for about 15
minutes." Next week, Cody's homework assignments will include his shake
command and loose-leash walking. Cody gets along with all of the other dogs
in the program, and he looks forward to his playtime in the yard with them!
Cody's handlers say that "he has come along better than we hoped for in such
a short time. He is eager to learn, and he's doing great!"

UPDATE - 7/27/10
Cody arrived at the prison on July 27, 2010. His handlers were waiting with
anticipation to meet their canine cellie! They took Cody out to the yard to
help him become familiar with them and his play/training area. Cody has
already made a friend in Justin, and he thinks that Dutch isn't such a bad
doggie companion either! Cody
is a three year old Viszla/Lab/Golden mix and is available for
adoption through Diamond Dog
Rescue.
