Week 7
Well, we learned this week that Chip is only frightened of strangers when he
is on his leash. As it turns out, he could care less that there are
strangers nearby when he is running around with his friends in the dog yard,
but the very same situation on the leash sparks a great deal of fear in him.
As a result, his homework this week is all sorts of leash work. First,
he'll be working with his three handlers, then with the other handlers in
the program, then we'll add in the officers and hopefully help Chip to feel
as safe on the leash as he does when he is off. Fingers crossed...

Week 6
Well, Chip had an excellent week! He started working with two new
handlers, in addition to the two he already has, and he was nothing but
friendly to them. We are all looking forward to helping him continue
to expand his circle of "friends." Chip has been a star at his
obedience training. His leash walking is superb, he responds to a long
list of commands and tricks and he absolutely loves to play with the other
dogs in the program. Sudden movements tend to frighten Chip a bit so
he would prefer a home without children. But, he would love a home
where he could have a few, dog savvy adults and maybe some other dogs.
He is so very loyal to his handlers and would make a great companion for
someone willing to have a little patience while he builds up his confidence.
Does that sound like you? If so, please get in touch. Chip is
such a special boy and he truly does deserve a wonderful home.

Week 5
Chip and his handlers have been working extra hard this week. We're
all learning about Chip and what triggers his insecurities. The
handlers, officers and staff have all pitched in to follow the training
protocol and it's definitely helping to bring Chip out of his shell and
develop a new comfort level. One place we don't see any shyness is
when Chip is playing with the other dogs and the handlers in the program.
He has a ball!! He loves to run and romp and fetch with the other
dogs. This is when we see Chip most relaxed. It's as if there is
no place he would rather be than running with his friends. It would be
great for Chip to have another doggie playmate to spend time with. The
playtime really helps him to release some of his pent up puppy energy.
He is a star at his obedience training and he and his handler often
communicate without any words. Just a nod or glance from his handler
and Chip knows exactly what is expected of him. What a great friend
he'll be to the right person!!

Week 4
Well, Chip had a bit of a roller coaster week. He had a great training
class, but became a bit grouchy over the weekend. The good news is, he
was back to his sweet old self by the next training class. The trainer
worked very closely with Chip and his handlers this week to help Chip find
his way back. If only every adoptive family could be as patient and
understanding as the inmate handlers. Instead of branding him a
trouble maker, they took Chip back to square
one and started rebuilding his confidence again, brick by brick. They
asked for help right away, listened to the information given by the trainer,
followed the instructions to the letter and discovered that a little
patience and understanding can go a very long way! Chip
is still very young and will need someone willing to accept his adolescent
shortcomings and help him learn and relearn life lessons. The result,
a bond between companion and canine that will withstand the test of time.
Do you have a place in your life for Chip?

Week 3
Chip is quickly becoming the star of training class. He is very
attentive to his trainer and he follows directions almost every time.
Of course, he also had a "class clown" moment this week when he felt it was
time for a break. Chip and his handlers are working hard to build up
Chip's confidence. They work together with the other inmate handlers,
as well as the staff at the prison, to help Chip succeed in situations that
would normally have made him uncomfortable. Everyone is beginning to
see the improvements and the next step will be for Chip to head out into the
big world outside of the prison and put some of his new skills to work in
normal, everyday situations. Way to go, Chip!

Week 2
Chip's handlers are having a great time with this sweet boy. He gets
along with all of the other dogs and he loves to romp and play. His
handlers are working on a step by step training method to help ease Chip's
discomfort around strangers. The staff and inmates are all helping to
encourage Chip and we're beginning to see a more relaxed boy. Of
course, it will take some time for Chip to feel completely comfortable
around new folks, the work that his handlers are doing with him is taking
him leaps and bounds from where he was just two weeks ago. Other than
that, Chip's biggest hurdle is remembering to come when he's called by is
handlers. They are working on some recall games with him this week in
order to strengthen this skill. Keep up the
great work!!!!

Week 1
Chip has had a great start to his training in the program. He made
friends quickly with Jada and they've been playing non-stop ever since.
He is a little wary of fast movements, unfamiliar noises and strangers, but
that's all a part of why he's in the HOPE Program. His handlers will
be working on helping him to feel relaxed and safe even when there are
unexpected visitors and noises. He and his handlers act like they've
known each other forever and that is sure to help ease Chip through his
training over the next few weeks. Chip is a fabulous dog and everyone
is already head over heels for him.
