Week 4
Checkers’ handlers report that his “training is going well, and he learns new commands quickly with a little work.”  This pup is now sitting on a regular basis, and is learning to sit at doors until his handlers tell him that it’s okay to cross the threshold.  For some reason, Checkers doesn’t like the people in uniform that he encounters each day.  So, his handlers had two guards treat him when he stopped barking at them to let him know they are going to be part of his world, and that he is safe with them.  This pup got to go outside for some R&R this week!  Although we’re sure that he got a bath after romping around in the mud, Checkers and his handlers were able to get a lot of exercise and have some fun!  “He has discovered a basketball low on air, and it has become his favorite toy.  We are letting Checkers off-leash out back, and we’re using it to help his recall skills.  He’s doing really well with it.”  Okay, so R&R also involves training!  So far, so good, Checkers!

Week 3
Checkers had a good week!  “He’s still a little hard-headed, but he’s just a puppy.”   Checkers also had no structure in his life, so the fact that he now knows his leave-it command, and goes to his crate with barely a whimper are true accomplishments.   His handlers take their pup out into the big yard for some fun.  “He was running and chasing the ball we threw to him.  Checkers slid and landed on his side, and laid there like he meant to do it.” His handlers only have good things to say about him, and report that “he is definitely a lap dog.  For those families that have the time to run him, then love him, Checkers is a great dog.”

Weeks 1 & 2
Checkers’ handlers report that during his first week “he seems to have adjusted very well and loves meeting all of the new people.  We let him explore the entire block and all around the block outside.  We let Checkers off the leash out back to run freely in the fresh snow the other Saturday.  He ran like a nut, and spent more time falling and sliding around than he did running.  Most of the time, he came when recalled.”  This week, his handlers report that Checkers is listening well, and learning fast.  He already knows his wait, and shake commands, and is working on his roll over skill.  In fact, his shake command was one of the first that he mastered.  “It was the first answer to every request we gave him.  You can tell that he thinks it’s fun to shake, and that he knows he learned something new.”  This pup has gotten better with his crate training and now goes right in it when asked.  “He no longer cries while in the crate, and often takes naps in there.”  Of course, Checkers prefers to sleep with one of his handlers. “He is hogging up most of the bunk at night and sleeping in the weirdest of positions.”  Even though he’s a bed hog, his handlers report that Checkers’ “mannerisms are great and it’s fun to just watch him play.”  What a great report, little boy!

UPDATE 1-19-12
Checkers is a lucky boy who had a run of bad luck. He was found by CPAA volunteers in the cold days of December wandering around City Island. Cold, starving and all alone, Checkers was more than happy to take advantage of the warmth and comfort of his foster home. He is one of many stray dogs found in Harrisburg this winter who needed safe haven and found it in CPAA. He is the first of the City strays to enter the HOPE Program and we know he'll pave the way for himself and many more to find their way home. Checkers is an adorable, young Pit Bull mix who is available for adoption through CPAA.  Stay tuned for next week's update.
