Week 7
Although Cam can still be a little skittish around new people in her world, she’s doing much better at giving her paw to them (thanks to treats!).  Her handlers continue to work on her confidence skills, and she makes progress each day!  They praised Cam this week for her ability to take toys from them nicely, her with me skills, and her stand/leaning command.  One of the things that definitely Cam knows is her recall skills.   In fact, her handlers report that “it’s great.  When she’s with the other dogs off-leash, and she can’t see us, she’ll come to us when we call her.” Cam, Joey, Rambo and Checkers had some fun in the doggie yard this week.  “The most action was Checkers and Cam wrestling and occasionally bumping into each other.  Cam easily outmaneuvers Checkers, and sends him sliding face-first into the grass!  She is relaxed and confident in the dog yard.”  Now we need to find you a forever home to where you can be relaxed and confident as well, little girl!

Week 6
“Cam and her friend Checkers spent all of their energy playing in the yard this week.  Checkers likes to chase Cam, but she’s quicker than he is, and also has more endurance.   She just dodges out of his way until he’s exhausted and gives up.  Then, Cam taunts Checkers trying to get him to chase her again.”  Of course it’s not all about having fun with the male members of her pack.   Cam also got gold stars on her report card for her behavior off-leash with not only Checkers, but Rambo and Joey as well!  She’s also becoming very disciplined with some of her stay skills.  This little wallflower is beginning to blossom, and we can’t wait to hear how she does next week!

Week 5
Cam’s handlers report that she “is still a shy dog, but she’s slowly coming out of her shell.  It’s adorable to watch as she peeks out of our room, only to run back to the back of it, and then a moment later, she’ll head forward again, further than she did before.”  Cam is entirely at ease with her handlers.  In fact, they have been able to teach her the “off” command, because one of her favorite tricks is to hop up on her hind legs and stand against them, when she’s invited to do so.  Although this pooch is still leery of all of the strangers in her world, her handlers interacting with others on the block to show her that she should not fear them.  They use treats to encourage her to be around other people, and as a result, Cam is “growing slowly more confident, and is developing a trust in a few of the other inmates.  She is learning her boundaries in the yard and she is highly sociable with the other dogs.  Cam is very intelligent and learns her commands quickly.”  Not only that, this pup is remarkably house-trained!   Keep finding your confidence, little girl!

Week 4
“Cam is beginning to warm up slowly, but surely.  She is starting to come out of the cell on her own, and actually wags her tail on the tier.” Cam really likes when her pals Checkers and/or Joey are near her…if they can do it, she can too!  She’s also more likely to take a treat from a stranger if she has the comfort of her doggie friends.  Cam is doing well with her training.  She’s keeping up with the plan that the professional handlers mapped out for her, but “the hard part is getting her to do it with the loud sounds and/or strangers nearby.  Slow exposure to others and reintegration around people is showing some success.”   Although Cam is still a bit timid [she doesn’t like people staring at her], she played with Checkers on the tier this week, and showed a little more personality and interest in her surroundings.  Her handlers report that “it was another good week for Cam!"

Week 3
Cam’s handlers report that she “has been building courage slowly but surely this week.”  This pooch is very comfortable in her cell…in fact, that’s where she is doing her training for now, but her handlers are using her big appetite for food to draw her out onto the tier.  “We put her bowl a foot outside of our cell door, and she gains courage to go out and get a mouthful at a time.  We’ve been continuing the distance further and further.”   This technique has worked so well, that Cam (in her comfort zone around her HOPE buddies on the tier) was able to play with Joey [off-leash] and Rambo [while on-leash] on the tier this week!  When there is no one but her handlers around her, Cam likes to play with her squeaky corn toy and her chew-ring.  “She is looking for attention, pouncing around, and is always trying to cuddle with us on the beds.”  Although this pup has a way to go to trust all of the humans in her world, her handlers say that it was “a good week for Cam!”

Week 2
Cam’s handlers continued to form a trusting bond with her this week, and she is responding to them well. “She is starting to show her playful, nice, kind self in the cell and in the dog runs.  Cam will do a play-bow and play with her toys at night.  It still can be difficult to lure her out of the cell, however, she’ll peek her head out and run into the unit manager’s office and back all on her own [when we are nearby or outside the cell].”  You’re becoming very brave, little one!  Cam also interacts positively with her pack mates.  She already is able to be in the dog runs off-leash with Taavi and Joey, and she and Checkers play well together while on-leash.  “They leap at each other, and Cam pounces and has fun.”  Her handlers report that after just a short time in the program, “she is showing more confidence here and there.  We think that having other dogs around her helps her a lot!”  You’re doing great, little one.

Week 1
Cam’s handlers welcomed her into their world last Sunday.   As all of the handlers do when they meet their new pups, they focused on reading about the issues that brought her into SCI-Camp Hill and forming a bond with her.  After just a short time, her handlers say that “there is an underlying, happy, joyous dog behind her uneasiness.  She’s still adapting to her new routine and environment,”   Cam doesn’t have any problems with the other dogs in her world, but for right now, she’d rather stay close to her handlers than greet the other humans on the block.  Her handlers are slowly introducing tricks (like her sits) into her routine, but, for now they are working to let her know that she’s safe with them.  One of Cam’s handlers report that “around 11:00 p.m., I noticed that she was playing with her little stuffed puppy dog.  She also jumped onto my bunk and put her head on my chest, so we do have a starting point.  She is a sweet, kind puppy!”

UPDATE 2-5-12
How could anyone leave this pretty girl behind? She was abandoned at a shelter with her two littermates who have both been adopted. Cam is still waiting for her chance at a happy ending. She is a sweet girl who needs some confidence and to learn how to trust her human friends. She already loves other dogs nad cats so we hope her time with us will be short and she'll be on her way home soon.   She is an adorable, one year old Collie mix who is available for adoption through Furry Friends Network.  Stay tuned for next week's update.
