Week 6
Calvin has a new running regimen that involves spontaneous changes. Calvin and his handler run for about 30 minutes every morning. Calvin loves it so his handler decided to throw in a few curveballs this week. After running the same speed for awhile, he sprints. When Calvin catches on, he jumps straight up in the air and then sprints too so he can catch up. Then, he falls into step right next to him. He figured that out so well, that his handler threw in a surprise stop. Calvin jumped backward this time and ran right back to him. Calvin is coming along nicely and is very easy to train. He's improving day by day and is also doing well in reposnding to other handlers who work with him.

Week 5
Calvin is incredibly loyal. He loves to be with his people and typically prefers their company to that of the other dogs. He likes other dogs just fine, but people are definitely where his heart is. One day this week, his handler was away for a longer period of time than usual. When he came back, Calvin was so excited to have his buddy home that he ran around him in circles for a few minutes. He couldn't help himself. He just adores his people. He also loves to learn new things. He's so bright that there is just about nothing this boy can't learn. Whoever is lucky enough to adopt him will have a super fun companion with a love of learning and an eagerness to please that is simply fantastic!

Week 4
Calvin's handlers think he might be "gifted." He is really smart and picks up on new skills very quickly. He is always very attentive and focused and that definitely helps him in his studies. Calvin is also learning to communciate with his handlers without them having to use any words. His handler shows Calvin hand signals and Calvin knows exactly what to do! When they're outside together, Calvin likes to jog about 30 yards ahead of his handler and then sit and wait for him to catch up. Them he's off for another adventure before waiting for his buddy to catch up again.

Week 3
Calvin learned how to be a little more self-sufficient this week. After coming in from an exercise session with his handler, Calvin was told, as usual, to go to his crate. When he got there, the crate wasn't open. Instead of letting that stop him, Calvin put his paw up on the handle, popped the crate door open, walked in and settled in for a nap. His handler stood in the doorway with a wide grin, realizing just how smart this little boy is. Calvin had a nother fun week of playing with his doggie buddies and getting lots of attention from the inmates and staff. Everyone adores Calvin!

Field Trip Alert (as told by HOPE volunteer Claire): Calvin and I headed off to the outlets for some socialization practice. He was fantastic! He loved the ride in the car and was a first-class passenger. We did a lot of walking and visited with some of the shoppers. Calvin's leash manners were wonderful and a huge improvement. He was also very good at greetings and kept all four paws on the ground each time. There were a few noises that startled him, but he handled them very well and recovered quickly each time.

Week 2
Calvin is way ahead of the game when it comes to basic obedience skills. He knows all of his basic commands and will happily perform them for just about anyone. He's very good about going into his crate and listens very well. His recall is especially good. Just by calling out his name, his handlers can get Calvin's attention and redirect him from whatever he's into and send him running back to them. Calvin is a sweet boy who loves everyone. He gets along with all of the other dogs, too!

Week 1
Calvin is what we like to call a velcro dog. He loves his people and attaches quickly. He eagerly looks to his new handlers for instruction and likes to learn the new tricks they've been throwing his way. On his very first day, he learned how to play fetch and would happily bring his toy back ot his new friend and drop it so the game could continue. Calvin is a sweetheart and is enjoying all of the attention he's been getting at doggie school. Because he attaches so easily, his handlers have been making sure Calvin gets to spend quality time with just about everyone. This week, he'll be working on welcoming guests into his cell and improving his leash manners. Keep up the good work, Calvin!

UPDATE 10-27-12
Calvin is a wonderful boy who just needs a fresh start. He is part of our inaugural class at Roxbury Correctional Institution where we're hoping he'll get just that. He needs a refresher course in all of the basics, but that's about it.  Calvin is a sweet, lovable two year old Cocker Spaniel who is available for adoption through Cocker Spaniel Adoption Center, Inc .  Stay tuned for next week's update.
