Waiting in foster care...

buddyWeek 17
Buddy spent his last week at the prison just being Buddy.  His handler gave him gold stars for “everything,”  “He and Thunder cuddled up and took a nap together.  He was curious about Brownie (the new kid on the block), and is probably wondering if he’s a squirrel.”  Buddy attended the Tricks for Treats Adoption Day at Diamond Dog Rescue and again showed what a sweet boy he is in the company of other dogs!  This little boy loved sitting on the lap of one of the HOPE volunteers on the way to the event, but was also content to snooze in the back seat on his way back to the prison.  Buddy left SCI-Camp Hill on Sunday to live with a wonderful foster family until he finds his forever home.  His handler writes that “he will be missed tremendously by not only me, but his friends all over the whole prison who have grown to love him.  But, it’s great news that he will have a friend (HOPE parolee Bo) there who he can play with until he finds his forever home.” Keep being your sweet self, Buddy!

Week 16
Buddy’s handler reports that his pup has spent time with another handler this week while he went to work.  “He was fine with it, and acted the same way with him as he does with me.  He didn’t show any uneasiness or nervousness.”  Buddy received gold stars from his handler as a result of his behavior!  This pup got to attend the Halloween parade in Lemoyne, and also received a special furlough to attend the Hope Reunion this past week. As always, he showed his sunny disposition and good manners!  His handler says of the events, “Buddy went out again, and hopefully found a home.  If not, he’s more than welcome to stay with me.”

Week 15
Buddy enjoyed experiencing familiar adventures, as well as new ones this week!  He spent some time with Thunder with no issues.  “They’re the new odd couple.”  He also got to visit the gym again.  “He gets massive amounts of attention and exercise playing with his handball on the basketball court.  When we come back to the block, all he wants to do is sleep.”

Buddy was our HOPE Ambassador at two events this past week.  Last Sunday, he attended CPAA’s Woofstock gala on River Front Park, and his handler was very pleased to hear that “Buddy did very, very well” at the event.  This pup also attended the Mutt Mixer sponsored by Furry Friends Network [a member rescue of CPAA] on the grounds of Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday.  What a superstar!  He got along with all of the other dogs at the event ([his tail rarely stopped wagging), and, as his handler suspected, “he got all the attention he so desperately seeks.”  This pup got pets from people from all ages (including a special kiss on the top of his head from a little girl), and was just a joy during the whole event.  On the way back to the prison, Buddy curled up one of the HOPE volunteer’s lap for a well-deserved nap.  Both of the volunteers enjoyed the sounds of his gentle snores while listening to country music and chatting about this and that. We know that his handler was proud to hear the report about this pup’s very fine day!  “Hopefully, Buddy will get the forever home he deserves.  In the meantime, I look forward to keeping him a little while longer.”

Week 14
This pup’s handler is fortunate to be able to take him to the gym at the prison at times.  He gave Buddy gold stars this week for not only how well he behaved, but for the good feelings he brought to the inmates who were in his company.  “Buddy has been a therapy dog for some people around here.  During his adventures to the gym, he has given everyone joy.  Specifically, to a man who hasn’t been around a dog in nearly 40 years due to his incarceration.  They spend a few minutes together each time and they both feel better afterwards.  This man is not the only example, but he’s easily the most fulfilling.”  Keep bringing comfort to those around you, Buddy!   We HOPE your forever home is right around the corner, little boy!

buddyWeek 13
Buddy was one of the HOPE ambassadors at Dog Days in the Park event on Saturday sponsored by Animal Rescue, Inc. (a member of CPAA).   He was quite a cute fellow, and he charmed everyone with his smiles, mile-an-hour tail wag and long eyelashes!  It just so happened that his sponsoring rescue, Cocker Spaniel Adoption Center, Inc., was in the booth behind the HOPE booth.  Everyone was so happy to see him again, and to see how well he’s adjusted to life in prison!  Buddy poured on the charm as the volunteers took him for walks through the event.  He also thought that it was pretty neat when volunteer Cindy stood up from her chair…he jumped right in it for a better view of all that was going on around him!  He actually did that a couple of times, and once he lost his balance a little bit, and looked like he was going down a sliding board, but he quickly regained his composure, and wasn’t fazed a bit!  He was also very good about not begging for food when the HOPE volunteers took turns eating their lunches.  Buddy was a joy during the ride back to the prison.  He enjoyed napping on the comforter in the back seat of the van while we were going down the highway.  When an accident detoured us, and we weren’t going 55 miles an hour anymore, he crawled up on one of the HOPE volunteer’s laps to investigate.  Once we were back on the highway, he opted to go back to his comforter for another snooze.  We HOPE that you can pour on your charm in a forever home very soon, Buddy!

Week 12
Buddy’s handler focused on his reactions to different situations this week.  Although this pup hasn’t shown any of the behaviors that brought him to the program, he has some issues that his handler has been helping him through.  “He gets excited when I get “home” or when he sees someone who will give him attention.  He barks when other dogs bark, and he also barks when his silence is interrupted by someone knocking on the door.  I get his attention before all of the distractions occur, and he does well.”  We HOPE that someone will love you forever soon, Buddy…distractions and all.

Week 11
Buddy’s handler reports that he got a special treat this week!  “My bosses gave me the opportunity to bring him to work with me.  Everyone loved him as we stayed upstairs in a controlled environment allowing him to roam freely.  He loved playing racquetball, and jumped on any desk to get to it. Taking Buddy with me was a trial run that went well, and hopefully, it will continue when it’s possible to do so.  He was on his best behavior the entire time, and loved all of the attention that he received.”  Of course, this pup got gold stars on his report card for his being in a new place outside of his comfort of friends this week!  After a day at work, this pooch was a tired boy. “As soon as we came back from work, he went to sleep on our floor.”  Here’s to new experiences and floors to sleep on in your forever home, Buddy!

Week 10
Buddy adjusted to having just one handler in his life this week.  Although he misses his other cellie, this pup quickly checked out his new living arrangements, and decided that the top bunk was just the place for him!  As his handlers reported the other week, Buddy has become a master at using his cage and a cabinet to reach new heights in the cell.  “He loves lying there, watching out the door, and meeting visitors at eye level.”  This pup also enjoys playing with his new handball.  “He chases it around the cell.” You’re a cutie, little boy!

buddyWeek 9
Buddy’s handlers report that “he’s doing great, and has been since day one.  His supposed issues haven’t surfaced, and most likely won’t.”  This pup doesn’t liked to be picked up, which his handlers are working on, but other than that “he has made a lot of friends here and spends every day with them.”  Buddy had his first experience at serving as the HOPE ambassador at Ashcombe’s on Saturday, and he did his handlers proud!  He enjoyed being the center of attention with that cute little face of his, receiving pets from everyone who wanted to greet him and meeting the other dogs at the event.  Of course, he thought that sitting on the bench at a picnic table with HOPE volunteer Cindy was the best!  Here’s to a yard with a picnic table in your forever home, little Buddy!

Field Trip Alert (as told by HOPE volunteer Cindy) -On Saturday, I took Buddy to Ashcombe’s Dog Days.  When I got to the cell block and Buddy saw me, his whole back end started to wiggle (it wiggles when he wags his tail).  His loose leash walking was great.  He lay down in the van and didn’t make a peep.  We got to Ashcombe’s and walked by the stands and the other dogs.   He did very well meeting all other dogs.  We were under a pavilion with picnic tables.  Buddy likes picnic tables.  He decided the best way for people to see him would be if he was sitting on the bench of the picnic table.  It worked pretty well.  He had lots of pets and compliments.  Some people from his rescue were there.  They were very glad to see him and thought he looked great and behaved very well. As the morning went on, he lay down and tried to take a nap.  But there was so much going on, he decided just to watch everyone as they passed.  This boy is a  real sweetie.  I know he enjoyed his morning out.

Week 8
Buddy got into a tussle with one of the dogs this week (it wasn’t his fault), and he was a little worse for the wear as a result.  “He handled it very, very well.”  In fact, his handlers gave him gold stars for being able to put the experience behind him.  They also gave him praise for listening to them off-leash in the doggie yard when there are strangers around him!  Good boy!  As we reported last week, this pup continues to accept new people in his life.  “Buddy has been enjoying running around the block in the evenings.  He gets all the attention he needs while obeying commands from new people for treats.”  You’re a keeper, little boy!

Week 7
Buddy got the chance to “hang out” at the gym this week!  “He was exposed to a different environment and complete strangers.  He listened and ran through his commands.  He did excellent.”  In fact, Buddy did so well, that his handlers gave him gold stars on his report card for meeting new people!   All the work at the gym paid off, because this pup learned how to climb up on the top bunk in the cell.  “He uses his cage and a cabinet, and he hops up and down and loves every second of it.”  We know that you’re top-bunk handler loves your company too, Buddy!  Keep learning new things, little boy!

Week 6
Buddy’s handlers report that things were status quo with him this week.  “He continues to show no signs of the behavior that placed him into the program.  He is a sweet, loving dog who just wants to be around you.  He gets along with plenty of other dogs - five of seven to be exact - which we think is fantastic.  He loves the attention that everyone gives him, and playing outside chasing flat balls around that are as big as he is.  He listens and is very well behaved.  Buddy is a gold star as a whole.” HOPEfully, you’ll find your forever home soon!

Week 5
Buddy's name suits him remarkably well. He is exactly that - a buddy to everyone he meets. Buddy loves his doggie friends, especially Kelsey, Rambo and Harley. They are his very best friends and he plays and trains with them whenever he gets the chance. He's also a fantastic buddy to his human friends. His handlers love him to pieces and so do the officers and staff at the prison. Everyone who meets Buddy is taken by his sweet disposition and genlt nature. Buddy is a charmer who loves to sit in your lap and showeryou with affection. This week, he was working extra hard on paying attention to his handlers even when he was off the leash. They practiced a lot on the tier of the cell block since there are lots of distractions there. Buddy was terrific and handled everything with ease. This boy is a gem and we hope someone sees his value very, very soon.

Week 4
Buddy made new friends with Rambo and Harley this week.  “They all co-existed in the same run together without incident.  They didn’t really play together.  They more or less just minded their own business while they all received treats.  His handlers report that “Buddy does show spunk at times with certain toys.  Of all his options, he chooses flat volleyballs, basketballs and footballs.  He is scared of the big orange ball, but will approach it with caution when we put treats on top of it.  When he moves it as he takes the treats, he barks at it.  It’s funny to see.”  You’re doing great, little Buddy!

Week 3
Buddy and his handlers “did everything they could to beat the heat” this week.  They worked on this pup’s basic obedience cues in the cell, and he continues to do well with them.  “Buddy is also improving on his separation anxiety.  He continues to spend more time in his crate on his own accord.”  In fact, his handlers gave him a gold star for his ability to be on his own!  Even though it was rather warm, Buddy loved his play time outside.  “We found a toy that he likes…a flat football.  He’d run after it and shake it around before bringing it back to us”.   Keep coming around, little boy!

Week 2
Buddy is off to a phenomenal start. We were truly expecting him to have far more issues than what we're seeing and we couldn't be happier that the structure and routine of the prison program has agreed with him so well. He loves the other dogs, especially Kelsey. He likes to play with her for awhile and when he tuckers out, he likes to watch her continue on with playtime. He has also made friends with Harley, Elliott and Rambo. He is a very sweet-natured dog who loves to sit in your lap and be snuggled. This week, he wooed the HOPE trainer. In just minutes, Buddy had him sitting on the floor so he could reach his lap. He loved having his ears rubbed and his back scratched. When it comes to training, Buddy is a very smart boy. He learned all of the new skills this week without much effort at all. He was particularly adorable doing the "bow" command that he learned. Something about those big eyes looking up at you for approval just makes you melt. This week he also got a haircut from our groomer. She said he was wonderful and now he looks extra handsome. This boy is a sweetheart and definitely quite a catch!

Week 1
Buddy’s handlers only had him in their lives for a few short days before filing their first report.  “We’ve been getting to know him, as well as letting him get to know us and his new environment.   Buddy seems to have relaxed fairly quickly.”  He is a sweet and loving dog.”  Buddy had a some time to get to know his new friends while they gave him a bath. He was a perfect gentleman for bathtime and his handlers were thrilled to see him looking so handsome. We’re looking forward to hearing about week two Buddy!
