ADOPTED!!!

Week 8
Bailey headed for home this week with his new family.  He had a little setback last week so they were very patient and agreed to let his training continue for another week or so.  Boy, did that pay off!  It was just what Bailey needed to get back on track before his "parole."  Good luck, Bailey and enjoy your new life!!

Week 7
Bailey had an incident on his "test walk" with his potential new mom at Borders last Saturday [he saw some children]. With the troubling issues from his past, this was no surprise, but it still something we'd like to continue to work on.  The good news is that Bailey was adopted nonetheless, and we couldn't be happier for him! Bailey's handler, however, was very dismayed when he heard about Bailey's actions. He's working with another handler to address Bailey's issues...with good results! They'll keep working on honing Bailey's skills to make him an even more loveable pet for his new family!  Other than the kids, Bailey was as sweet as could be with everyone else he met and charmed his way into each of their hearts.  Relax, Bailey! You're going to be okay!

Week 6
Cosmo's handlers babysat Bailey for a few hours this week. Bailey went to look into Cosmo's crate, and Cosmo went in and laid down. Bailey just laid on the floor outside the crate door, and the two of them enjoyed each other's company in their different spaces! Of course, when Bailey wanted some attention, Cosmo went to his handlers to get his share! Both pups got along really well!

Bailey also got to go for an outing at Borders for the Meet and Greet! He liked having his soft ears and belly rubbed by most of the folks he met! As his handler said early on, he's not a kid-kind-of-guy, so the HOPE volunteers did their best to minimize his contact with little the ones. He really did have a good experience while he was there, however!  Here's hoping that you find your forever home soon, Bailey!

Week 5
Bailey continues to make progress! He LOVES his new crate! At first, he didn't know what to think when he had not one, but TWO doors to use! He would go in the front door and out the side door, then look around and go back through the side door and out the front! He took his toys into his new space, one-by-one, and decorated his new home!

Bailey is doing great with his commands, and he played really well with Oliver and Cosmo this week! Sometimes, Bailey got a little distracted when people came up to the fence, but he responded well to his handler. Bailey barks sometimes when people are talking loudly around him, but will stop when his handler corrects him and walks him away from the folks. Bailey also is very playful, listens well in the dayroom, and still is doing well with his crate manners! Bailey's handler thinks he's ready for his forever home. His handler doesn't know what caused his lunging issues earlier (and, perhaps no one will, considering he was living in a cage for so long). That having been said, he thinks that Bailey will do well in a loving and understanding home.  You go, Bailey!

Week 4
Bailey had another good week and showed excellent manners toward all of his new friends! He has responded to his handler's command not to bark, and has improved on his other commands. Bailey now knows "down" and "roll-over" in addition to the lessons he learned last week! Bailey also learned to wait in his crate until his handler gave him the go-ahead to come out. Bailey's handler thinks that he's very smart because of his ability to learn new commands!

Bailey loves to play fetch and tug with his rope! He's also very good with the other dogs! Bailey shows no resource guarding with his toys, rawhide bones or his food. Right now, Bailey's handler sees his downside as his wanting to test people and to see what he can get away with!

One of Bailey's favorite places is his handler's bed, but he won't go up until he's given the "go-ahead." Bailey will also get off of the bed when he is told to do so. While on the bed, however, Bailey loves to lay up against his handler for a lot of pets and belly rubs!  Keep up the good work, Bailey!

Week 3
Bailey made some big strides this week! His handler hasn't been giving him a lot of treats. He's been letting others do so to teach Bailey that food and strange people are good things! Bailey is doing great going in and out of his crate on command! When his crate door is open, Bailey will wait until his handler tells him that it's okay to come out. Bailey is a very smart dog, and he picks up new lessons quickly! His handler has been working with Bailey to learn "leave it", "stay" and "wait" because Bailey is impatient at times, and his handler thinks that these commands are important for him to learn to find his new family.

Bailey's handler was walking with one of the HOPE volunteers one day, and they chatted about Bailey's being in a cage for two years. His handler thinks that Bailey's barking issue stems from his craving attention. Bailey's handler reports progress with this issue!  Bailey is very playful, and loves to play fetch and tug! He also loves when his handler lets him up on his bed! Bailey will jump up and lay down next to his new friend so that he receives a lot of pets! Bailey's handler thinks that he is ready to venture out for some home visits soon!  Enjoy your snuggles, little one!

Week 2
Bailey showed some lunging tendencies this week, but his handler gently helped him realize that this wasn't good behavior. Bailey's handler will work with him next week to be able to go up to different people, have him sit, let him get his pets, and move on.  Other than tending to lunge this week, Bailey showed that he really is a good little dog, who craves attention! He also learned some new commands! In addition to "sit," he also knows "paws up," "stick 'em up," "leave it," and "stay." Bailey got to understand the crate routine better this week! At first, when his handler opened the door, he would try to fly out of it. Now, Bailey has learned that he has to wait until his handler says that it's okay to come out, and goes into his crate when he's told to do so!

Bailey is very playful! He loves playing fetch and tug the rope! His handler thinks that once he can minimize the lunging issue, Bailey will be a great pet! He suggests that there be no small children in the family, but he thinks that other dogs in the house won't be a problem. At first, Bailey's handler saw some resource guarding with his food and toys, but Bailey is doing much better!  You go, Bailey!

Week 1
Bailey is off to a great start.  He was very nervous for the first two days, but once the petting started there was no turning back for him.  He's been giving his furry, little belly to just about everyone hoping for a good snuggle.  He has already made several doggie friends and this week his homework will be to work on some basic commands.  Bailey is a sweet boy and once he gets comfortable with the idea that humans are here to help, we think he'll be just fine.  He's making a lot of friends already and we have very high hopes for him!

UPDATE - 1/12/09
Bailey is headed to the big house today.  Stay tuned for updates on his progress!  Bailey is available for adoption through Cocker Spaniel Adoption Center
