UPDATE
Anna Mae is adjusting really well to her new foster home.  She's beginning to play with her new pack and showing signs of improvement again.  She will make a wonderful pet for someone with the patience and understanding to let her progress at her own pace with no pressure for success.  Watching Anna's "milestones" is a sweet experience and it's wonderful to see her take tiny, baby steps toward feeling safe and protected.  If you are interested in learning more about adopting Anna Mae into your family, please contact Brookline Lab Rescue

Week 7
Anna Mae had a really strong week.  She faced a lot of her fears and took a few more tiny steps toward feeling like a normal dog.  She really enjoys her time with the other dogs, exploring the doggie yard and taking walks and jogs with her handler.  Although her new family will have to start from square one again to earn her trust, we're hoping that this experience will help her to come around more quickly and start from a better, more positive place.   She has been one of the most popular dogs ever to pass through our doors and we're thrilled to have so many wonderful choices for her to choose from.

Week 6
Anna Mae had a few setbacks this week, but she's learning to recover more quickly than before.  The world is such a scary place for her, but you can see that she's trying.  She visited with the groomer this week and braved every doorway and stranger with grace and bravery.  She was still a little frightened by the idea of walking around with a stranger, but all in all she did extremely well.  It's important to measure Anna's successes in small increments.  Accomplishments that would be unnoticeable in other dogs are milestones for Anna Mae and we celebrate each one!

Week 5
Anna Mae had a big week.  She made a new friend in Honey and strengthened her bond with Toby, Charlotte and Akira.  She had a nice bath and seemed to thoroughly enjoy although she wasn't quite as cure about the brushing that followed.  Her handler reports that she loves to go for runs with him around the dog yard.  She is extremely tolerant of all dogs.  Her basic obedience skills are coming along nicely and if there's not much pressure on her she will show you all of them.  Her recall is improving at short distances and she's even learning to ignore people passing by.  These are huge steps for this sweet girl and we couldn't be more proud.  This week in the doggie yard, Anna caught sight of a pieces of cellophane blowing in the wind and began chasing it like a little puppy.  When it landed, she pounced on it with a wagging tail and seemed thoroughly pleased with herself!  She's really starting to make good progress and can finally start looking towards moving on with her life.  Way to go, Anna!!

Week 4
Anna Mae looks more and more comfortable with herself every week.  She has found another new friend in Honey and there have been many tail-wagging moments between the two of them this week.  Anna is a brave soul who is basically relearning how to live.  Every week we see a little more confidence and a little more spring in her step.  It's nothing out of the ordinary now to see her come into the block from a potty break outdoors and walk through people and noises without worry.  Her head is held high now and although there are many things that still frighten her, her recovery time is shortening and the new experiences that she's encountering are giving her the strength to face her fears.  She's nothing short of fabulous and is her continued (albeit guarded) faith in the promise of something better is a lesson to us all.

Week 3
Anna Mae took some solid steps forward this week.  While playing in the doggie yard, she decided that this was the week she was going to approach some strangers who were passing by.  If you've never met Anna, this might seem like a small thing to mention.  But, for those of us who have the joy of working with her, we know that this was a huge step for her.  It took a lot of bravery and a lot of trust and she did it!!  There was a lot of tail wagging this week and she has some wonderful new friends in Charlotte and Toby.  Charlotte definitely brings out her inner dog and reminds her just how much fun it is to just be a dog.  And Toby is like a kindred spirit for her.  They both have very similar backgrounds from their years in a puppy mill and can begin to face their fears together.  Anna Mae is really coming along and we're all really excited to see her continue to blossom!

Week 2
Anna Mae had another big week.  She's getting more comfortable leaving her crate in the morning, although she's definitely NOT a morning person.  She'd much rather sleep in and enjoy a late start!  She had a good time playing with Charlotte this week and her handler reports that for the first time since her arrival, he witnessed an utterly carefree moment of Anna Mae just being a dog.  They were playing out in the yard when Anna Mae began to romp around, flop in the grass, roll around and then do it some more!  She looks more and more relaxed with every passing day and the team of handlers is really enjoying working with her.   Every day, she takes a few more steps toward feeling safe.  She now accepts walks and petting from all of the members of the HOPE Program and this week, they'll be working on more interactions and widening her circle of safety.  She is such a fantastic dog and it's wonderful watching her slowly begin to heal.

Week 1
Anna Mae is just a dear, sweet soul.  You can see it all over her face every time you glance in her direction.  All she needs is patience and love and she'll be well on her way.  She faced up to a lot of her fears in her first week here.  Her handler is working slowly with her to build up her confidence around strangers.  They practice walking in and around people every day so that she can used to the idea of being around new folks.  hey also practice walking outdoors and experiencing different noises, smells, movements etc.  Anna Mae's world was so small for so long that she's just fearful of everything.  By exposing her to lots of new experiences, we hope that her confidence will continue to grow and that she will eventually find comfort in the people around her.  On a happy note, she had a wonderful week with Charlie.  Charlie must have seen a little of himself in Anna Mae and decided to take her under his tiny, little wing.  She and Charlie played together out in the yard and Anna Mae learned how to play keep-away.  In doing so, her handler saw Anna Mae's tail wag for the first time.  Such a small thing, but such a huge milestone for our girl.  Keep up the good work, Anna Mae!!

Update
Anna Mae got started in the program this week and she's beginning to settle into her new surroundings.  She is a gorgeous, five year old yellow lab who deserves to feel safe, loved and cherished for the rest of her life.  She had a very rough beginning having lived in a puppy mill for her entire life.  But, now we plan to spoil her as much as we can and help her learn that from here on, everything gets better!  Anna Mae is available through Brookline Lab Rescue.
