Week 21
Angel went to the softball field this week, and had a lot of fun! She found some goose eggs, so her handlers leashed her so she wouldn’t disturb them. “That gave us an opportunity to walk her on-leash with distractions. She wasn’t perfect, but she showed that she will focus on us even in a new environment.” In fact, Angel’s handlers gave her kudos for the way she behaved at the softball field! Her handlers are also looking forward to more nice weather so they can give Angel the exercise she needs and loves!

Week 20
Saturday, Angel went out to a park to play, and did well for the most part. When she got back to the prison, her handlers took her out to the yard to play with Hounder. “They did great for a while.” Angel attended the Pet Therapy Day at Messiah College. She loved being outdoors, exploring the campus, and getting the pets that she received!

Week 19
Angel once again excelled with her behavior on the block this week. “She seems to do better that way off-leash.” This pup also got to meet Buddy. Although they weren’t instantly enamored with each other, their handlers will work with them to co-exist in their pack.

Field Trip Alert: Angel attended the Easter Extravaganza at PetValu on Linglestown Road this past Saturday. She got to meet the Easter Bunny and seemed to really like his soft fur. This little girl can still be choosy about her canine friends, but she had a great time meeting the people, young and old, at the event!! Angel loved all of the pets she received and giving out kisses. In fact, she would look disappointed when someone walked by her without giving her attention! Angel had to be reminded to keep all four paws on the ground when greeting her fans, but as we have reported before it’s her way of saying hello (although still an area of work for her handlers) and is not at all aggressive. All in all, it was a great day for our pretty girl.

Week 18
Angel’s handlers report that “she continues to be Angel as we wait for the weather to finally break. We look forward to spending extended amounts of time outside playing. In the meantime, we work her mentally with a game where we put her ball in a milk crate. She knows it now, but it did keep her occupied and thinking.” Angel also got kudos from her handlers for her “excellent obedience” when she was off-leash on the block this week! You’re doing great, little girl!

Week 17
Angel went on a field trip this week. Her handlers learned from the HOPE volunteer reported that their pup “was full of energy and overwhelmed by the activity around her. Eventually, though, she settled and did well.” Angel also went to the gym with one of her handlers. He writes that “she was once again excellent. She was very, very well-behaved for the entire two hours she was there.” In fact, this pup got gold stars for what a good little girl she was at the gym! Her handlers are looking forward to better weather so that they can take her to the doggie yard to help her burn off some energy. In the meantime, we’re sure that Angel will have some more trips to the gym where she can play on the basketball court to her heart’s content!

Week 16
“Angel has been doing really well lately. She’s calming down slowly, but it’s a step in the right direction.” This pup enjoys joining one of her handlers on his morning runs. He reports that it can be challenging sometimes to have her along because “she wants to run in every direction but straight.” We hope you can be calm with a family you can call your own soon, Angel!

Week 15
Angel’s handlers are still working on her meeting and greeting folks with four paws on the ground. “Some days are better than others.” She and Rascal became pals this week. “They are fine together, and we hope that they’ll help each other burn off their excess energy. Other than that, nothing has changed with Angel.” The only big change we hope for you, sweet girl, is for you to find your forever home.

Week 14
“Angel is getting a little better at greeting.  We’ve been having her sit before she says hello to anyone, but we still need to work with her.”  For those of you wondering about this pup’s jumping when she says hello, it’s not aggressive. Angel just can’t help her enthusiasm to get someone new into her circle of friends.  Maybe the fact that she was abandoned by the ones she thought loved her and finding people who really care for her just makes her want acceptance by more friendly folks in her life. “Angel is a great dog.  Once you get to know her, you can’t help falling in love with her.”

Week 13
angelAngel’s handlers say that at this point, her only issue is how she meets and greets others. She tends to jump up on folks to say hello, but “after her initial excitement, she calms down significantly.” Angel had her first experience as our HOPE ambassador at the adoption event at Tractor Supply Company in Carlisle this past Saturday, and she had a wonderful time!  Since it was such a cold day, one of the HOPE volunteers appreciated having a canine heater on her lap to and from the event!  Angel also served as our navigator by laying her head on the dashboard watching carefully that Volunteer Cindy didn’t make a wrong turn. This pup was a hit with the customers!  She sought out and accepted pets from people of all ages and lived up to her nickname “wiggle butt!” Everyone commented what a pretty girl she is, and Angel basked in all of the attention!  Admittedly, she did her signature jumping up on people, but she responded pretty well to the HOPE volunteers when they gave her the “off” command.  Angel also enjoyed the treats that she received!  One customer opened a bag of them that he was buying for his pups, and shared them with her after she performed some of her commands.  Another customer bought Angel a yummy bone. She acted like she was in heaven as she put it between her paws and munched away on it!  She was an absolute joy to be with, and we HOPE that someone will soon embrace her enthusiasm and kindred spirit into a forever home.

angelWeek 12
Angel’s handlers report that “things are going really well with her.”  She’s still an excitable pup, but when her enthusiasm gets the best of her, her handlers don’t show her any attention and she calms down.  Angel has earned the nickname “wiggle butt” from the folks on the block because “she’s always happy and her tail is always wagging.”  Stay happy, little girl!

Week 11
Angel got to go see her foster family last Sunday.  “I’m sure she loved that as much as they did.”  Her skin condition is doing well with the medication and special shampoo her handlers are using. In fact, she got gold stars this week, because “baths are a non-issue for her.”  If you read the journals about all of the dogs in the program, you know that Danner is our HOPE canine volunteer when Margie takes one of our pups on a field trip.  Well, Angel decided to become a HOPE canine handler this week.  “One of the funniest things we’ve seen is when Angel walks Duke.  She just picks up his leash in her mouth and proceeds to lead him around!”  Keep showing that sweet personality, Angel!

Week 10
Angel handlers report that she’s feeling much better due to her mild medications.  “Thank you.”  They also tell us that “she remains the happy, attention–seeking dog who tries hard to meet and greet people properly.  There also have been no setbacks with having a new handler.  She obeys him, and thoroughly enjoys his company.”  Angel also got to have some fun out in the dog yard this week “in a failed attempt to tire her out [snicker].”  We’re glad that you’re back in the pink, Miss Angel!

Week 9
angelAngel was a little under the weather this week.  That didn’t deter her from embracing an additional handler into her world, however.  “She loves it because she gets more attention now. “  She also met the new kid Duke, and “they are fine together.”  We HOPE you’re feeling better in no time, Angel!

Week 8
Angel was introduced to a new food regimen this week.  Although she’s getting used to both the food and having a designated time to eat (she normally would just pick at her food throughout the day), her handler is confident that she’ll soon adjust to the routine.  This pup also enjoyed the additional snow we had.  “I worked with her off-leash obedience while we were out there, and she did very well.  Angel especially loved the snow on New Year’s Day.  She went out with Thunder, and played all afternoon.”   It’s obvious that you love the snow from the pictures on our Facebook page of you on your field trip, sweet girl!  We also have to say that you are quite the stunner in that green and red doggie coat!  You’re a keeper, Angel.  Now, we just have to find someone who wants to keep you as their own!  Paws crossed!

Week 8
Angel handler tells us that she “had an exciting week and had a lot of fun.  She went to the gym with me and got to meet some new people, as well as catch up with some old friends.  Everyone loves her, and she behaves when she’s there.  Angel listens very well and shows that she also has manners.”  Aside from hanging out with her pals, this pup loved running around and playing with her toy on the basketball court.  Right now, her favorite toy is the one she got for Christmas.  “She wants to take it everywhere.  She will back track to go get it when we go out.”  Angel spent Christmas morning playing in the snow.  “She’s like a little kid out there running around and rolling in it.”  This sweet miss also discovered that sleeping under the covers with her handler is just the ticket.  “She will walk up to me and paw at the sheets for me to let her under them then she curls up and goes to sleep.”  We HOPE that you can cuddle with your new family members very soon, Angel!

Week 7
angelAngel was introduced to a harness this week.  Although she “wasn’t thrilled with it, there was an immediate difference in how she walks and meets and greets people.” Her handler hopes that the harness will teach her to curb her enthusiasm in these endeavors, so that it’s a temporary part of her training.  This pup also got good grades on her report card for allowing her cellie to give her a “hassle free” bath!  Angel’s handler used her play time to work on her stay command this week.  “I throw her soccer ball, and she stays and waits for me to tell her to go get it.  To mix it up, I sometimes just have her fetch the ball without the cue to stay.  She knows the difference and enjoys the game/training.” Keep learning new things, Angel!

Week 6
Angel’s handler focused her training indoors because of the dismal weather we’ve been experiencing. “I’m impressed with how she handled the down week.” He ran through her commands in their cell. Since she had few distractions there, he was able to work on her known skills and add “crawl” into her repertoire this week. Angel was treated to lots of games of tug of war for her efforts!  “A funny story about her is how she reacts to shadows.  At night, when I just have the lamp on, she likes to go after them and lick the shadows cast upon the wall beside the bed.”  You’re a sweetheart, Angel!

Week 5
Angel got to spend a whole day at the gym this week!  Since she and her handler had the basketball court to themselves, they worked on her off leash walking behavior. “Her only issue with that was thinking it was a game of cat and mouse at times.  She didn’t run off, though, and she is getting better with recalls.”  Angel also worked on her walking, specifically staying by her handler’s side around distractions.  “Keeping her focus is difficult without a treat, but she’ll get it soon enough.”  As for her day at the gym, her handler reports that “Angel was excellent.  I knew she would be good, but she exceeded my expectations with how good she was.”  Here’s to more days at the gym, and more great reports from your handler, Miss Angel!

Week 4
Angel loves snow! She had a blast playing in it all morning when we had our first snowfall of the year. Angel is one of the friendliest dogs we've ever met. She is so happy and loves to meet all sorts of people. She is working very hard at keeping all four paws on the ground for greetings. She knows that's what she's supposed to do, but her excitement for making a new friend often gets the better of her. She is so sweet and her whol back end wiggles everytime she gets to greet someone -- new friend or old pal. She loves to play with Thunder. They like to wrestle and roughhouse together. Angel will often just flop down on her back while they play together. They're such good friends and they have a great time together. Everyone loves Angel and for good reason. She's easy to love and all she needs is some smoothing out around the edges. She'll be ready in no time to start making everyone on the outside of the jail as happy as she makes everyone on the inside!

Field Trip Alert (as told by HOPE volunteer Margie): So appropriately named.  Angel got out for her first field trip on Friday and what a little doll.  There was a lot of pulling leaving the prison, but of course that's pretty normal (we don't even count it).  She jumped right into the back of the car and we rode over to the college - she was the perfect passenger.  We started off with the long lead - I wasn't sure how it would go because Angel has a ton of energy.  I thought my shoulder might get relocated, but as it turned out she hardly ever even went to the end of the lead.  She loved sniffing and exploring, but she really didn't want to get too far away and checked in with me frequently.  After a while we switched to her regular lead and practiced some loose leash walking.  She did pretty well but still needs to work on that.  She catches on quickly, so I'm sure in no time she'll have it down.  As far as meeting  people - she wiggled up to everyone.  She knows she's supposed to sit when she meets, and she really tries hard, but sometimes that wiggle butt of hers gets going so fast, she just can't sit!  Everyone of course loved her and one woman (a self proclaimed "cat person") even took a picture of her.  Back at the prison, Angel continued to charm people from the officers at the front gate to a couple of personnel as we walked back to the block.  A really good first outing for Angel!!

Week 3
Angel is a vrey bright little girl. She is learning her various obedience skills quickly and she loves the attention that goes along with her training. She and her handler are working daily on building her concentration and focus. She's just a kid so her attention span isn't very long yet and she gets distratced easily. Together, they work every day to try her commands when there are other exciting things going on around her. She's getting better with each passing day and her handler is confident that with patience, consistency and lots of repetition, she'll be able to focus no matter what's happening around her. She is such a love and greets everyone she meets as if they are a long lost friend. And not just any friend. She treats everyone as if they're her long lost very best friend in the whole world! You really have to meet Angel to see just how well suited she is to her name.

Week 2
Angel worked on meeting and greeting people this week.   “She has shown the willingness to keep all paws on the ground, but she still needs a lot of work.  She just gets too excited to meet someone and can’t help herself after a while.  She is learning fast though.  Her loose leash walking improves every day.  She is very smart, and picks up on everything.”  Since Angel is so new to the program, all of the new noises she encounters distract her, so her handler’s focus is to get this pup focused.    “Eventually, she WILL get it.”  Angel has no issues with the other dogs in the program.  In fact, “she and Jackie are getting along great, believe it or not.”   She also did well on her first trip to the gym this week.  You’re really coming along in just a short time, Angel.  Keep up the good work!

Week 1
Angel arrived at the prison on the Sunday before her handler wrote his first journal.  In that short time, he already had several observations about her.  “She is energetic, loves attention, but she has no manners while seeking it.  Angel is learning that ‘nothing in life is free,’ even though she is new to the program.  The other side of that is that she gets ample rewards and treats for her good behavior.  This will continue, and if two days are a sign of things to come, she will respond excellently.”   This pup is already learning her loose-leash walking skills, and after being introduced to her “shake” command, she understands that having her paws cleaned before entering the cell isn’t such a bad thing.   So many new things to learn, little girl!  One thing she loves is being part of a pack.  “She and Thunder will be best friends.  All in all, Angel will be a very well-behaved dog very soon.  She shows some stubbornness at times, but her eagerness and willingness to learn will exceed that.”   You’re  on the road to your forever family, sweet girl!

UPDATE 11-3-12
Angel is heading to the big house tomorrow. This pretty girl needs all of the basics, plus some lessons in pack manners. Sadly, Angel was abandoned on a front porch when her family moved away. Now she's looking for a change in her luck and a home to call her own.  She is an adorable, one year old Pit Bull mix who is available for adoption through Furry Friends Network.  Stay tuned for next week's update.
